sta décimo tercera edición de la RUTA DEL ARTE representa de nuevo una invitación a los amantes de las artes para visitar los estudios de artistas en Ibiza y Formentera, así como una guía por la escena artística.

Además, en este número damos cierta prioridad a las esculturas y los escultores que las crearon. Por eso un artículo encabeza la sección de artistas que se adentra en los esfuerzos humanos por crear obras de arte en 3 dimensiones, desplegando tanto una perspectiva histórica como el ancho de técnicas y estilos desde la Edad de Piedra hasta la impresora 3D.

The focus of this year’s edition is on sculptures and the sculptors who created them. Hence the artists’ section is headed by a feature that looks into man’s efforts to create 3-dimensional artworks, offering both an historical perspective and the width of sculptural techniques and styles, from stone age to 3D print.

Otro artículo enfoca sobre el certamen ESCULTORES EN VIVO del que se espera una nueva edición este año. Dos veces ya se logró escenificar este concurso amigable en la que escultores de todo tipo de procedencia y con una variedad de técnicas crean, en el exterior y a la vista de todos, una escultura de principio a fin. Los participantes mismos determinan quien será el ganador. Esperamos que se logre celebrar en septiembre otra edición de este acontecimiento tan instructivo como divertido que pone en relieve el proceso de creación de obras 3D de manera única.

Another feature focuses on the event ESCULTORES EN VIVO (sculptors live) of which a new edition may be expected in the course of the season. Two times already this amicable competition has been staged successfully in Ibiza town where sculptors of all kinds created a sculpture, outdoors and in public, from beginning to end, using a variety of techniques. The winner is elected by the very participants. We hope for this instructive and sportful event that in a unique way highlights the process of creation of a 3-dimensional piece to succeed in getting staged again this September.

Otro prometedor acontecimiento de la temporada artística en Ibiza será la feria ART IBIZA prevista a primeros de septiembre. La última vez que el recinto ferial alojó una feria de arte fue en 2000. – Se esperan galerías internacionales de arte contemporáneo así como presentaciones individuales de artistas emergentes. Además de pintura y escultura tendrán un lugar la fotografía, el diseño, la arquitectura y las editoriales de arte. Una sección se dedicará a las galerías jóvenes. De la escena artística local se espera también que juegue un papel importante. Le deseamos una atmósfera creativa en la que artistas, galeristas, comisarios de arte y coleccionistas se reúnan esos 4 días en Ibiza.

Another promising event of this art season on Ibiza is the fair ART IBIZA ‘15 announced for beginning of September. The last time Ibiza’s Fair & Convention Centre hosted an art fair was in 2000. We may look forward to an array of international galleries of contemporary art as well as solo shows of emerging artists. Besides painting and sculpture, photography, design, architecture and art publishers will be focused on. A section is dedicated to young galleries. And, of course, the local art scene is expected to play an important part as well. We hope for a creative atmosphere where artists, gallery owners, curators and collectors will get together on Ibiza for 4 days.

Por último rendimos homenaje a la artista, amiga y primera presidenta del Art Club, SOLA, un personaje carismático y un verdadero motor de la escena artística de la isla que ha marcado esencialmente el desarrollo del Art Club. Su fallecimiento prematuro al comienzo del año llegó como un shock para la mayoría de nosotros que aún sigue conmocionándonos. his thirteenth issue of the RUTA DEL ARTE is once again an invitation to art lovers to visit the studios of the participating artists in Ibiza and Formentera and a guide to the island’s art scene.

The last feature pays tribute to the artist, friend and the Art Club’s first president, SOLA, a charismatic personality and important motor of Ibiza’s art scene who had great part in shaping the development of the Art Club. Her unexpected demise came as a shock for most of us which still lingers on. The feature tries to follow up on her extraordinary career and special talents that we will miss for a long time to come.

he Convention Centre of Ibiza is incorporated into a unique building inspired by traditional Ibicencan architecture and surrounded by nature at its best. It offers installations and equipment of high standards, in keeping with the category of events it hosts. The events taking place in it, however, are not limited to conventions only but extend to cultural activities and productions of great prestige and professionalism. Highlights have been so far, for instance, the Moscow Ballet, the Art Club’s annual exhibition “Ruta del Arte”, the annual exhibition of the Association of Visual Artists of Eivissa (AMAE) and various operas staged by Armin Heinemann.

lub Diario was started in April 1993. People have come to use it as a platform of dialogue. An open and pluralistic club which has never stopped growing. At present, the Club organizes more than a hundred events per year and attracts more than 11.000 visitors each season. It has become an essential reference point for social and cultural life. Initially more centered in offering conferences and debates, the Club recently diversified considerably its activities. Thus, the platform iniciated by the newspaper hosts movies, concerts, theatre plays, dance events and art exhibitions, converting it into a dynamic element within the social and cultural life of the island. Sa Punta des Molí Sant Antoni de Portmany Carrer de s'Embarcador

l espacio cultural de Sa Punta des Molí consta de una sala de exposiciones, una almazara y un molino museizados, un auditorio y un jardín botánico. Se encuentra en un punto de gran valor etnológico y natural desde donde se domina la bahía de Portmany. El espacio conforma un lugar único y es el referente cultural del Poniente de la isla. A lo largo del año acoge todo tipo de instalaciones creativas y acontecimientos culturales: exposiciones, conciertos, festivales de cine, talleres, presentaciones de libros, espectáculos, teatro…

Far de ses Coves Blanques Sant Antoni de Portmany Carrer Alemanya, 2

l Far de ses Coves Blanques es el antiguo faro, ya en desuso, de Portmany, construido en 1887. Tras una restauración y adecuación, actualmente está dedicado a usos culturales. Es la sede del Centre d’Interpretació de la Mar, que tiene como fin el estudio, la investigación, la exposición y la promoción de temas marinos. Cada verano acoge la Universidad Internacional del Mar.

he Far ses Coves Blanques was formerly Portmany’s lighthouse, built in 1887 but out of order for years. After restauration and shaping up, it is now dedicated to cultural uses. It is the seat of the Centre for the interpretation of the Sea, whose task is the studying, putting on display and promoting marine matters. Each summer, it hosts the International University of the Sea.

LUNA LLENA DE ARTE E

Una feria de arte al aire libre

n 2003 el Art Club, y en particular Sola, iniciaba una exhibición mensual en la que los artistas visuales podían exponer sus obras de manera informal. Escultores, pintores y fotógrafos montan una muestra al aire libre que supone una panorámica artística de la isla. Al comienzo tenía lugar exclusivamente en los jardines de Las Dalias bajo el nombre Noche del Arte. A partir de 2008 se celebra en lugares alternos bajo el título Domingo del Arte. Santa Eulària y sus varios municipios fueron su primer anfitrión, desde entonces el acontecimiento se ha celebrado también en Sant Josep, Eivissa y Sant Antoni. En 2013 cambió de nombre otra vez y se llama ahora Luna llena de Arte lo que indica una sincronía con la luna en vez de los domingos como día fijo. Pero la modificación insinúa además que cambia quien organiza el evento. Ahora se encarga Aida Miró de la muestra, y la marca con un estilo propio aunque sin alterar el concepto. Mientras la Ruta del Arte invita a conocer la obra de artistas individuales en su propio entorno, la Luna llena de Arte ofrece una impresión panorámica de la creatividad en la isla en diferentes entornos. Ocasionalmente la presentación está acompañada por actuaciones en vivo, desfiles, videos e instalaciones. Pero como suelen surgir espontáneamente, no podemos anunciarles aún.

n 2003, the Art Club, and in particular Sola, initiated a monthly forum for artists to display their work for an evening in an informal way. Painters, sculptors, photographers put on an outdoor show that makes for a rich cross section of what’s being created on the island. At the beginning it used to be called Noche del Arte and took place exclusively at Las Dalias. Since 2008 its location is different every month during the season. It first ventured out to Santa Eulària and its various villages, and then it spread to Sant Josep, caught on in Eivissa, and two years ago included Sant Antoni. In 2013 the name changed another time to Luna llena de Arte which indicates a synchronization with the moon phases instead of the link to Sundays. But moreover, the modification hints at a relay of who organizes the event. Now Aida Miró, painter, dancer, performance artist, is in charge and marks the show with her own style even though she claims not to alter the concept. While the Ruta del Arte invites you to come and see the work of resident artists in their own surroundings, the Domingo del Arte offers a panoramic view of the island’s art scene. Occasionally highlights like performances, video projections and installations are staged. However, as these events are spontaneous we cannot announce them yet.

a Ruta del Arte se inició hace trece años como iniciativa de una libre asociación de artistas. Su propósito es dar a conocer unos cuantos de la extraordinaria multitud de creadores –muchas veces desconocidos– y presentarles al público en toda su diversidad. En el proyecto sin jurado, compuesto por colegas sin prejuicios, se mezclan artistas renombrados internacionalmente con estudiantes avanzados y aficionados empedernidos. La selección se basa esencialmente en la iniciativa de los participantes sin representar la totalidad. Además resulta que la participación varía de un año a otro, así que se incorporan nuevos talentos cada vez. La Ruta del Arte sale a fin de invitar a un público interesado en las artes –tanto a los expertos y coleccionistas como a los aficionados– a explorar la isla por caminos diferentes a los habituales y visitar a los artistas de los que quieran conocer su obra y el lugar en que trabajan. Así que póngase en marcha y empiece la verdadera RUTA DEL ARTE descubriendo algunos de los artistas siguientes.

he Art Route was started thirteen years ago as an initiative of a few artists who informally founded an association. Its purpose is to highlight some of the multitude of creative minds on the islands, often thriving in the shadows, and present them to a wider public, in all their diversity. Compiled by colleagues, without a jury, the project admits internationally renowned artists as well as committed newcomers and keen amateurs. The selection is based essentially on the initiative of the participants and does not claim to be complete. Moreover, participation fluctuates from one year to the next, and thus new talents are continually being incorporated. Ruta del Arte invites a public interested in the arts – experts, collectors and art lovers alike – to explore Ibiza off the beaten track, and meet the artists they choose at their place of work. So take the opportunity and start out along the real RUTA DEL ARTE by visiting some of the following artists and their work while touring the island.

LA ESCULTURA – HASTA EL ARTE 3D

n volumen se despliega en las tres dimensiones. La escultura es una creación artística en el espacio que puede ser de cualquier material, desde el oro al barro. Pasando por la roca, el mármol, el bronce, el cemento y el acero. También se ha utilizado la madera de olivo, castaño, roble y en nuestro entorno: la excelente sabina. Podemos imaginar a unos niños en la prehistoria jugando en el lodo. Estampando las huellas de sus pies, haciendo bolas de barro. Tras incalculables milenios de sorpresas, risas y miedos vendrían a nacer las primeras máscaras, los primeros totems, los primeros dioses, las primeras "esculturas". Es para mi un misterio el por qué al retroceder en el tiempo no nos encontramos con obras mas toscas, mas infantiles o mas imperfectas. Esto sería lo de esperar. Sin embargo las esculturas prehistóricas son de una calidad, de una maestría y de una madurez plástica que sorprenden. Elaboradas con técnicas refinadas y con un gran conocimiento del tratamiento del volumen. Dominan la síntesis de la forma, la expresión del movimiento y conocen la estilización. Combinan los colores con un sentido estético exquisito. Se teoriza sobre la utilidad mágica de algunas de estas creaciones. Es posible que su propia existencia fuera mágica, en una época cuando no había la super-abundancia de objetos que nos invaden hoy. Con la evolución del hombre nuevos materiales se fueron sumando a los naturales. Estos materiales han dado nombre a las diferentes eras o edades de la humanidad. La Edad de Piedra, la Edad del Bronce, Edad de Hierro. Los egipcios trabajaron hermosas piedras duras (Granito rosa de Asuán y basalto entre otras) utilizando herramientas de piedra, cobre y bronce. Realizaron también pequeñas figuras de madera: conífera del Líbano, sicomoro y ébano del Sudan. Las esculturas de piedra caliza estaban pintadas. Los hombres de ocre y las mujeres de ocre amarillo. Los ojos se resaltaban fijando con yeso una piedra blanca y otra negra. El escultor egipcio o mesopotámico trabaja sus estatuas aplicando unos conocimientos de geometría y una sabiduría cuyos orígenes podrían estar en la mítica Atlántida. son muestras de lo que fueron capaces de realizar a un tamaño monumental y son múltiples las esculturas que han sobrevivido al paso del tiempo y los elementos. En Grecia la escultura tuvo un papel preponderante. Su momento de mayor esplendor se sitúa entre los siglos VII a.C. hasta el s. II a.C. El cuerpo humano fue inmortalizado en multitud de actitudes reflejando el ideal atlético de la época. Los gimnastas, atletas y guerreros sirvieron de modelos para la creación de los dioses, ¡Creados a nuestra imagen y semejanza! Fidias, principal maestro de obras del Partenón en el siglo V a.C, demostró tener un gran talento, claridad en la composición y equilibrio en las formas. Lo mejor de la escultura helenística esta representado por el mausoleo de Halicarnaso También por el gran altar de Pérgamo, un friso inmenso que da vida, expresión y movimiento al combate entre dioses y gigantes. En Roma a partir del siglo I a. C. se desató un gran interés por la escultura clásica griega. Los romanos diversificaron los temas, aportaron los retratos y el realismo psicológico. El retrato se afianzó con la invención del busto que es una estatua que está formada por la cabeza y la parte superior del torso. Se cuenta que en la Roma antigua las estatuas eran tan numerosas como los ciudadanos! Siglo XV: En el Renacimiento italiano Leonardo da Vinci escribió muchas páginas argumentando acerca de la superioridad de la Pintura sobre las Escultura. Vale la pena recordar una cita que nos ilustra sobre los prejuicios de un genio: "La escultura no es ciencia, sino arte muy mecánica porque por ella su artífice suda y se fatiga, y bástale a tal artista conocer las simples medidas de los miembros (...) mostrando al ojo el objeto tal cual es, de lo que en nada se admira, pues, el contemplador; no así la pintura, que en una superficie plana muestra, a fuerza de ciencia, grandísimas campiñas con lejanos horizontes." Miguel Angel consideraba en ese mismo tiempo la pintura al óleo “una cosa de mujeres y holgazanes”. Fue Miguel Ángel un gigante, el modelo del artista del renacimiento y se ganó el tratamiento de "divino" por sus contemporáneos. Su "David" surgido de un enorme bloque de marmol de

Carrara y terminado en 1504 consagró a Miguel Ängel como el escultor mas grande de Italia. A finales del s. XVIII surgió en Francia e Inglaterra un rebrote del arte clásico que se propagó por toda Europa hasta muy avanzado el siglo XIX. Después de varios siglos de una estética religiosa de mártires e imágenes atormentadas surge este deseo de retomar las raíces grecoromanas de nuestra civilización. No copiando el estilo de los antiguos sino recuperando una estética ideal en lo que se dió en llamar Neoclasicismo. El tema de los hombres ilustres se pone otra vez de moda en la estatuaria neoclásica. El gran retrato cívico aparece adornando plazas y jardines. Los escultores del siglo XIX reaccionan contra el neoclasicismo y buscan nuevas formas de expresión. Auguste Rodin realiza un retrato monumental de Balzac que es considerado el punto de partida de la escultura moderna. Se produce una renovación del estilo en los artistas inspirados en el ideal romántico. Sensualidad en el desnudo femenino en bronce o mármol. Algunos pintores también sienten el atractivo de la creación en el espacio. Renoir, Degas, Gauguin, crean formas interesantes relacionadas con sus pinturas. En el comienzo del siglo XX la escultura está íntimamente relacionada con los movimientos pictóricos del momento. Cubismo, Futurismo y Surrealismo. Sin embargo no se limita a ser una traducción de la pintura al volumen, sino que se presta también a la experimentación. Matisse y Picasso crearon piezas escultóricas investigando las posibilidades del cubismo. Picasso hizo de su "Cabeza de Mujer" – la primera obra cubista en tres dimensiones. A Amadeo Modigliani fue la pobreza la que lo llevó a la pintura. Su verdadera ambición era la escultura. Realizó algunas obras en bloques de piedra recogidos en obras en construcción en París. Sus bustos estilizados reflejan la influencia de la escultura africana. De los futuristas fue Umberto Boccioni el que logró hacer sugerir movimiento y tiempo a la materia mediante la superposición de planos. Alberto Giacometti (que era escultor y pintor al mismo tiempo) supo dar a esas figuras alargadas, caminando, presentes y ausentes, un sitio propio en la historia del Arte. Naum Gabo publicó en 1920 un manifiesto

volume extends into three dimensions. The sculpture is an artistic creation in space and may be of any material, from gold to earth, by way of stone, marble, bronze, cement and steel. Woods such as olive, chestnut, oak have been used as well, and in our spheres the excellent sabina. We can imagine some prehistoric children playing in the mud, stamping their footprints and making balls from mud. After innumerable surprises, laughters and frights, the first masks turned out, as did the first totems, the first goddesses, the first ‘sculptures’ . For me, it is a mystery why in going back in time we do not find cruder, more infantile or less perfect pieces. That is what one would expect. However, the prehistoric sculptures are of outstanding quality, of extraordinary mastery and of surprising maturity. Manufactured with refined techniques, they show great knowledge of how to go about volumes. They dominated the synthesis of form, the expression of movement and knew about stylization. They combined colours with an exquisite sense of aesthetics. There are theories about magic ends of some of these creations. It is possible that their very existence was magical, in an era when there was no super-abundance of objects invading us like today. In the course of evolution, man added new materials to the natural ones. These materials have given name to the different ages of humanity. The stone age, the bronze age, the iron age. The Egyptians worked beautiful hard stones (pink granite from Assuan and basalt, a. o.) using stone, copper and bronze tools. They also produced small wooden figures: Lebanon conifers, sycamore and ebony from Sudan. The limestone sculptures were painted. Men in ochre and women in yellow. They emphasized the eyes by fixing a white stone with plaster inlaying a black one. The Egyptian or Mesopotamian sculptors worked their statues applying knowledge in geometry and a wisdom the origins of which may have been in mythical Atlantis. The Great Sphinx and the colossi at Abu Simbel are examples what they were capable of on a monumental scale. Many great pieces survived through the course of time and the

onslaught of the elements. In Greece, sculpture played an outstanding role. Its moment of greatest splendour ranges from the 7th to the 2nd century BC. The human body was immortalised in a multitude of attitudes that reflect the athletic ideal of the epoch. The gymnasts, athletes and warriors served as models for the creation of gods – created according to our image and our likeness! Phidias, the master builder of the Parthenon in the 5th century BC, showed great talent, clarity in the composition and balance in respect to form. The best in Hellenistic sculpture is represented by the Mausoleum of Halikarnassus and the great Pergamon Altar, an immense frieze that brings to life and gives expression and movement to the combat between gods and giants. In Rome, from the first century BC, a great interest in the classical Greek sculpture arose. The Romans diversified the subjects, added the portraits and the psychological realism. The portrait was reinforced by the invention of the bust, a statue that consists of the head and the upper torso. It is estimated that in ancient Rome the statues were as numerous as the citizens! In the Renaissance in Italy in the XVth century, Leonardo da Vinci wrote many pages arguing in favour of the superiority of painting over sculpture. It may be worth to recollect a quote that illustrates the prejudice of the genius: “The Sculpture is not a science but a very mechanical art because the craftsman sweats at work and gets tired, and it is enough for such an artist to know the simple measurements of the limbs (…) presenting the object to the eye as it is which is not admirable at all for the onlooker; on the contrary, painting presents on a plain surface by way of science vast landscapes with distant horizons.” Michelangelo, at about the same time, considered oil painting as “something for women and lazybones”. Michelangelo was a giant, the model of the renaissance artist and earned himself the attribute ‘divine’ from his contemporaries. His ‘David’, carved from a single block of marble from Carrara and finished in 1504, won Michelangelo

the reputation of Italy’s greatest sculptor. It was at the end of the 18th Century that a new branch of Classic Art flourished in France and Britain, the influences of which were imbue the whole of Europe till late in the XIXth century. After various centuries of religious aesthetics focusing on martyrs and tormented images surges this desire to take up the Greco-Roman roots of our civilization – not copying the style of the ancients but recuperating an aesthetic ideal which has been called Neoclassicism. The subject of famous men became fashionable again in neoclassic sculpture. The grand civic portrait appears adorning public spaces and gardens. Sculptors in the XIXth century reacted against Neoclassicism and looked for new forms of expression. Auguste Rodin created a monumental portrait of Balzac which is considered to be the starting point of modern sculpture. A renewal of style takes place through artists inspired by the romanticist ideal. Nudes in bronze or marble display female sensuality. Some painters, too, feel the attraction to create in space: Renoir, Degas, Gauguin accomplish interesting forms related to their paintings. At the beginning of the XXth century, sculpture is intimately related with the movements in painting of the time: Cubism, Futurism and Surrealism. Nonetheless, it does not limit itself to a translation of painting in 3 dimensions but pursues experiments of its own. Matisse and Picasso created pieces in which they investigated the possibilities of Cubism. Picasso made his ‘Female Head’ into the first Cubist sculpture. Amadeo Modigliani was led by poverty to painting. His real ambition, however, was sculpture. He did some pieces in stone blocks collected on building sites in Paris. His stylized busts indicate influences from African sculpture. Among the futurists, Umberto Boccioni succeeded in making his material suggest movement and time through the superposition of planes. Alberto Giacometti (who was both sculptor and painter) managed to give his elongated figures – walking, standing and absent – their own place in art history.

en el que decía que: "la realización de nuestras percepciones del mundo en las formas de espacio y tiempo es la única finalidad de nuestro arte plástico y pictórico". Fue probablemente el primer escultor en usar el material plástico en la realización de esculturas. En 1928 Picasso realiza en colaboración con el herrero y escultor Julio González las primeras esculturas de hierro soldado con acetileno. Jean Arp tuvo una trayectoria artística entre el surrealismo y el mundo de la Abstraction-Creation. Creó obras con un fuerte componente dadaísta, con formas determinadas por el azar. Fue uno de los escultores mas originales de su época. Henry Moore se inspiró en las formas primitivas para la creación de sus obras entre lo figurativo y lo abstracto. La escultura azteca lo influenció en la creación de sus figuras reclinadas que serian el tema preponderante en su carrera. Alexander Calder fue el primer norteamericano que alcanzó una reputación internacional con la creación de sus famosos móviles. Esculturas colgantes de cables y metal que son animadas por el viento. Esta forma de escultura abierta es la vanguardia en los años '30 del siglo XX. Eduardo Chillida en España continuó la tradición de Julio González realizando esculturas metálicas forjadas y soldadas, pero evitando todo elemento figurativo. Durante los años '60 cuando el Pop Art dominaba en la pintura, los artistas Gilbert y George afirmaron que no existía frontera alguna entre el arte y la vida, y que todas las actividades cotidianas podían ser "esculturas". En 1969 crearon "Bajo los Arcos" una "escultura cantarina" formada por los dos artistas vestidos con traje y con el rostro y las manos pintadas de color dorado, subidos sobre una mesa y moviéndose como marionetas al ritmo de la música. El escultor minimalista, Donald Judd, plantea su opinión: "El espacio real es intrínsecamente mas poderoso y específico que la pintura sobre una superficie plana". Esto es exactamente lo contrario de lo que opinaba hace cinco siglos Leonardo da Vinci. El Earth Art es básicamente una idea minimalista expresada a escala gigantesca. Robert Smithson realizó una espiral de barro y roca de 457 metros de largo por 4,6 metros de ancho en el Gran Lago Salado, Utah. Su intención no es otra que la de eliminar la distinción entre naturaleza y arte. El arte conceptual es un "diseño intelectual" que el artista espera crear en la mente del observador. siglo XX incorpora el movimiento ya sea por fuerza motriz o mecánica también por la acción del viento u otras fuerzas exteriores. El objeto Pop. Claus Oldemburg crea en 1962 su "Hamburguesa gigante" de lienzo pintado y relleno de espuma y declara: "Yo estoy a favor de un arte que se entremezcla con la porquería del día a día y aun así sale boyante". Christo ( Hristo Vladimirov Javacheff, 1935-2009) empezó en los años '60 a empaquetar edificios y a intervenir en el paisaje. El Body Art fue la vanguardia de los años 70. e incluye tatuajes, piercings, cicatrización, marcación, implantes subcutáneos, body painting y últimamente también la simbiosis del cuerpo con las nuevas tecnologías. Una siniestra especie de performance que algunos como el grupo vienés Acción Directa o Marina Abramovic llevaron al extremo de la automutilación en sus esfuerzos de romper tabúes sociales y atraer la atención mediática. En los '90 resurge el body art con la artista Francesa Orlan, cuya forma de escultura se expresa reconstruyendo su propio cuerpo mediante la cirugía plástica, para adaptarlo a los ideales estéticos que se encuentran en las obras maestras del pasado. Jeff Koons, superstar del mundo del arte, creó gigantescas esculturas reproduciendo con todo lujo de detalles los actos sexuales. Sus obras son una mezcla de modernidad, kitsch y sexo para revelar la belleza a través de la provocación. Instalaciones atemporales, objetos híbridos, esculturas de silicona, materiales sintéticos, esculturas eléctricas o hechas de luz, inmateriales, conceptuales, efímeras e inolvidables. No hay límites para la escultura. Todos los tamaños, materiales, colores y formas son posibles. Las esculturas se apoderan de un espacio y despliegan su poder y su presencia. Esta es, a grandes rasgos, la historia de nuestra escultura occidental y europea. Hay también otras esculturas, otros estilos y otras historias. Las obras de China, India, Japón, las culturas africanas y mas. También éstas se han desarrollado en su propio entorno y muchas veces han influenciado a occidente. La creatividad del hombre ha dado vida a obras de múltiples estilos y no hay material en la tierra con el que no se hayan creado formas fruto del ensueño y la imaginación. Habría que ser muy ingenuo para intentar imaginar la escultura del futuro. Como en todas las manifestaciones artísticas,

en la escultura lo que mas importa en nuestros días es la creatividad. El amante del arte quiere ver: ¡algo que no haya visto nunca antes! Algo que le provoque esa fascinación que hace posible convivir con una obra sin cansarse nunca de su presencia y encontrando siempre algo interesante e indefinible: La experiencia artística. La comunión del espectador con la obra, ¡el contacto del alma con el alma, que es lo que busca el artista!

TÉCNICAS ESCULTÓRICAS Una idea se envuelve en materia Tradicionalmente la escultura se ha dividido por la forma de trabajarla en: • La que se lleva a cabo quitando materia. Lo que hace el escultor que va desbastando un bloque de mármol para sacar de sus entrañas la figura imaginada. O en el caso de un tronco, tallando una forma, quitando madera con un cuchillo. • La otra forma es añadiendo materia, sea esta arcilla, cera, pasta de cartón, yeso, madera o cualquier otro. Es lo que se hace, por ejemplo, cuando se construye un esqueleto de madera que luego se recubre de arcilla, yeso u otro material. También cuando un escultor va soldando piezas metálicas de diferentes formas para crear la obra acabada. • Otro método muy utilizado es el moldeado. Se crea una figura previa en arcilla, cera u otro material maleable y se saca de ella un molde. Este servirá para realizar la pieza final fundida en bronce u otro elemento sólido perdurable en el tiempo. Un molde permite la realización de mas de una copia y la edición de obras escultóricas múltiples, numeradas y firmadas por el artista. • Una forma de expresión intermedia entre la pintura y la escultura son los relieves. En estos las figuras sobresalen del plano de la imagen lo suficiente para que se separen del fondo. Las luces y sombras resaltan el dibujo y la sensación de volumen. • Hoy en día las impresoras 3D son capaces de dar forma volumétrica a diseños 3D hechos con el ordenador. Un escaner 3D analiza un objeto, reúne datos de su forma, incluso de su color y con esa información se pueden construir objetos digitales tridimensionales. Los resultados son extraordinarios y nos anuncian el camino que recorrerá la escultura en los próximos años. Pritam, 2015.

Naum Gabo published a manifest in 1920 in which he said: “The execution of our perception of the world in space and time is the only goal of our plastic and pictorial art”. He probably was the first sculptor to use plastic material for executing sculptures. In 1928, Picasso in collaboration with the blacksmith and sculptor Julio González, made the first sculptures of iron welded with acetylene. Jean Arp had an artistic career between Surrealism and the world of AbstractionCreation. He created works with a strong touch of Dadaism, with forms determined by chance. He was one of the most original sculptors of his time. Henry Moore was inspired by primitive forms to create his works between the figurative and the abstract. Aztec sculpture affected the creation of his reclined figures which were the principal subject of his career. Alexander Calder was the first North American who reached an international reputation with his famous mobiles, hanging sculptures from cables and metal which were put in motion by the wind. This kind of sculpture with an open form was the vanguard of the 30s of the last century. Eduardo Chillida in Spain followed in the tradition of Julio González and made forged and welded metal sculptures but avoided any figurative element. During the 60s when Pop Art dominated painting the artists Gilbert and George affirmed that there was no boundary between art and life and that every daily activity could potentially be a ‘sculpture’. In 1969 they created ‘Under the Arches’, a tinkling sculpture made up by the two artists clad in suits and their faces and hands painted gold standing on a table and moving like puppets to the music. The minimalist sculptor, Donald Judd, set out his opinion: “Real space is intrinsically more powerful and specific than painting on a flat surface.” This supposes exactly the opposite to what Leonardo da Vinci stated five centuries earlier. Earth Art is basically a minimalist idea expressed on a gigantic scale. Robert Smithson made a spiral of mud and stones 457 metres long by 4,6 metres wide in the Great Salt Lake, Utah. His intention was no less than to eliminate the distinction between nature and art. Conceptual art is an ‘intellectual design’ that the artist aims at creating in the mind of the observer.

Kinetic sculpture arose in the 60s of last century and incorporates movement be it by a moving or mechanical force or by wind action or other external forces.

The Pop object – Claus Oldenburg came up in 1962 with his ‘Giant Hamburger’ of painted canvas filled with foam and declared: “I’m for an art that mixes with daily junk and still comes over buoyant”. Christo (Hristo Vladimirov Yavachev, 1935-2009) started in the 60s to wrap up buildings and plan his interventions in the landscape. Body Art was the vanguard of the 70s and includes tattoos, body piercings, scarification, branding, sub-dermal implants, body painting and lately also the body in symbiosis with the new technologies. A kind of sinister performance art, the Vienna Action Group or Marina Abramovic went as far as self-mutilation in their effort to break social taboos and win the attention of the media. In the 90s Body Art is back with the artist Francesa Orlan who reforms her own body by way of plastic surgery to become a sculpture adapted to the aesthetic ideals of the masterpieces from the past. Jeff Koons, known for his reproductions of banal objects – such as balloon animals produced in stainless steel with mirror-finish surfaces or a 13 m steel-puppy covered in live flowers, aims at revealing beauty through provocation. Timeless installations, hybrid objects, silicon sculpture, synthetic materials, electric sculptures, light sculptures, conceptual ones - ephemeral and unforgettable. There are no limits of what may be turned into sculpture – more and more seems to be possible referring to materials, dimensions, colours and forms. Sculpture is taking the stage and displays its power and presence. This is, in broad terms, the history of sculpture referring to our occidental and European culture. Moreover, there are other cultures, other styles and other histories. The works of China, India, Japan, the African cultures, among others. They developed in their own environment and many times influenced the West. Creativity of man has given life to artworks of innumerable styles, and there is no material on earth that hasn’t been made into forms dreamed up by imagination. One has to be naive trying to imagine the future of sculpture. As in all artistic manifestations, what counts most in sculpture nowadays is inventiveness. The art lover wants to see

something that he has never seen before. Something that stimulates this special fascination that allows for living with a piece without getting tired of its presence, always finding something interesting and indefinable: the artistic experience. What the artist hopes for is the communion of the onlooker with the piece of art, the contact from soul to soul!

SCULPTURAL TECHNIQUES An Idea gets materialised Traditionally, sculpture has been subdivided according to the way of working on it. • One is to take off material as does a sculptor hewing a block of marble in order to carve out of its entrails the figure he had in mind. Or in the case of a tree trunk when he carves out the form by shaving off wood with a knife. • Another way is to add material, be it clay, wax, papier-mache, plaster or whatever. For instance when a wooden skeleton is subsequently covered with clay, plaster and other material. Also when a sculptor welds together pieces of metal to form his design. • A third way is using a mould. First a figure is formed from clay, wax or any other mouldable material. Then a mould is made from it which serves to make the final piece from molten bronze or any other fusible material that gets solid enough to stand up to the course of time. A mould allows for more than one copy and an edition of multiple sculptural works, numbered and signed by the artist. • A form in between sculpture and 2-dimensional representations are reliefs. In these the figures protrude sufficiently from the plain of the image to separate from the background. Light and shade emphasise the design and the sensation of volume. • Today, the 3D printers are capable of building up shape by adding to it according to 3D designs made on a computer. A 3D scanner analyses an object, collects data about any detail of its form, its texture and even its colour, and based on this information, the 3-dimensional design can be 'printed'. The results are extraordinary and hint at a future way to execute sculptures.

Este “jardin de rocas” se encuentra en un lugar legendario, donde la diosa Tanit (Astarte en entornos semita-fenicios o Ishtar en Mesopotamia) tuvo un papel importante en tiempos de las guerras púnicas, unos 200 años a.C. “La Riada” esta dedicada a esta diosa. La obra revitaliza esta punta árida en el norte de Formentera. Está sujeto a cambios contínuos a causa del mar y de la intemperie. rma comenzó a pintar en 1989. Tras ejercer como locutora de la radio Holandesa Cable One, decidió dar un giro a su carrera profesional y dedicarse al arte a partir de ese momento. Sus pinturas figurativas fueron reseñadas por varias revistas holandesas. Su primera exposición en solitario se realizó en Rotterdam en 1990. Después de mudarse a Ibiza, el lienzo fue reemplazado por madera encontrada en el campo de la isla. La madera, tocada por el tiempo y el clima, fue una fuente de inspiración. Irma revivió las maderas con color. Sus piezas se pueden leer como un cuento vivaz. A partir de los años 90 sus obras de arte han sido expuestas en varias galerías de España, Países Bajos y Nueva York.

rma started painting in 1989. After being a radio host at Holland’s "Cable One", she decided to dedicate all her time to art. Her figurative paintings got noticed by some of the Dutch magazines. Her first solo show took place in Rotterdam in 1990. After her move to Ibiza, canvas was replaced by pieces of wood she found in the island’s countryside. The wood, touched by time and weather, formed a great source of inspiration. Irma reanimated it with colour. Her pieces read like a vivid story. Since 1991 her objects found their way into several Spanish and Dutch galleries and were also shown in New York.

A cada Orixá le corresponden puntos diferentes dentro de las fuerzas de la naturaleza, y los arquetipos están relacionados con la manifestación de esas fuerzas. Cada uno tiene su personalidad y un comportamiento individual, cada uno tiene su sistema simbólico particular, como su color, comidas, cánticos, rezos, ambientes, espácios físicos y hasta horarios. Como resultado del sincretismo que se dió durante el período de la esclavitud en Brasil, cada Orixá fue asociado a un santo católico, debido a las imposiciones de la Iglesia Católica. Los Orixás pueden ser divididos entre los 4 elementos naturales agua-tierrafuego-aire. Dentro del Candomblé hay 16 Orixás de gran culto.

he Orixas are deities created by a sole God Olorun. Each Orixá corresponds to different aspects of nature’s forces, and the archetypes are related to the manifestation of these forces. Each Orixá has its personality and an individual behaviour. Each Orixá has its own symbolical system as to colour, dishes, songs, prayers, environments, physical places and even hours. As an outcome of the syncretism that prevailed in times of slavery in Brasil, each Orixá was associated with a Catholic saint due to the restrictions of the church. The Orixás can be assigned to the 4 elements water, earth, fire, air. In Candomblé there are 16 Orixás of great veneration.

rtista conceptual multidisciplinar nacida en Ibiza el 1991. Desde bien pequeña ha estado interesada en el mundo del Arte. A los 16 años, comenzó sus estudios artísticos en la Escuela de Artes de Ibiza, donde se dio cuenta de que el Arte tenía que formar parte de su día a día. Al acabar bachillerato artístico, continuó estudiando en Badalona, en el IES Pau Gargallo, cursando el primer año del Grado Superior de Artes Aplicadas a la Escultura. Pero al ver que el grado superior de dos años se le podía quedar corto, decidió trasladarse a la Universidad de Barcelona para realizar la carrera de Bellas Artes. Trabaja dentro del ámbito de la escultura aunque también le gusta experimentar con la pintura, la fotografía, el vídeo, el grabado y el collage. Suele centrar su obra en exponer problemáticas actuales tales como las injusticias sociales, la normalización de los cuerpos o el biopoder.

Aged 16, she started her art studies at Ibiza's Art School and soon realised that Art had to be part of her daily life. After graduating, she continued her studies in Badalona doing sculpture in the first year of the superior grade in Applied Arts. But realising that the aspired grade might fall short of what she wanted, she decided to go for Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona. She works in sculpture but likes to experiment with painting, photography, video, engraving and collage. In her work, she usually focuses on setting out problematic issues like social injustice, the normalisation of the body or bio power.

arece que en septiembre de este año podía darse una nueva edición de ESCULTORES EN VIVO.El espectacular evento pone en relieve no solo la escultura sino también el trabajo del escultor. Se trata de un encuentro abierto para escultores de todo tipo y procedencia, organizado por un grupo de escultores alrededor de Pedro Hormigo. Los participantes se reúnen durante una semana para crear en el exterior, a la vista de todos, una escultura de principio a fin. Esto ofrece la oportunidad de ver como trabajan los distintos artistas y que técnicas utilizan para realizar sus obras. Dando así al espectador una imagen mas global del trabajo que supone la realización de una escultura. El escultor, que normalmente crea en la intimidad de su taller, hace el esfuerzo de trasladar el material y las herramientas necesarias para el trabajo de calle. Esto a veces es complicado porque algunas técnicas requieren de muchos elementos difíciles de transportar. Por supuesto que para el artista también supone un cambio de perspectiva, ya que puede observar los distintos puntos de vista de la gente en distintos momentos de la fabricación. También es divertido trabajar en conjunto, viendo como los demás hacen sus esculturas y en muchos casos aprendiendo cosas nuevas. Algunos funden bronce, otros esculpen madera, retuercen alambres y crean moldes para mortero. Esculpen la piedra, creando un paisaje un tanto pintoresco, que a veces nos traslada en el tiempo. Es cuando los paseantes pueden curiosear y preguntar alguna cosa que les llama la atención, o entablar conversación con alguno de los artistas, que amablemente los atenderá. Al principio, nadie parece saber que hacen los demás, pero pronto, todo va tomando forma. Y esa forma se va transformando, hasta el acabado final.

Al finalizar todos las esculturas, estas son llevadas a la sala facilitada por el ayuntamiento, para su exposición al publico. Pero no son éstos los que deciden quien gana este encuentro, sino los mismos escultores, que han visto como todos han ido creando su pieza. Y son ellos los que votando, determinan quien será el ganador del evento, hasta la fecha, acreditado por un premio en metálico.

Pasando la obra ganadora a pertenecer al ayuntamiento, que dispondrá de ella según convenga. Así es el espíritu de Escultores en vivo, un encuentro creado para romper las distancias entre el observador y el creador, para comprender con mas profundidad la habilidad que supone el hecho de crear con éxito una escultura de principio a fin, y para que la gente sepa realmente, como se hace una escultura. Roland Kocherhans Al cierre de edición aún no se podía confirmar donde y cuándo se celebrará el certamen ESCULTORES EN VIVO en 2015. Esta sería la tercera edición de este encuentro. La fecha idónea sería a finales de septiembre, ya que el tiempo aún sería agradable y menos caluroso que en verano. Pero todavía esta por confirmar que sea en la ciudad Ibiza como las anteriores ediciones. El ART CLUB IBIZA ha apoyado el proyecto desde el principio y desde aquí en la redacción de la RUTA DE ARTE animamos y confiamos que el proyecto siga adelante. Un proyecto que según Pedro Hormigo, padrino del primer encuentro, podría ser mas ambicioso para próximas ediciones e intentar incluso realizar alguna obra pública o posiblemente celebrarlo fuera de la isla. t seems that this year in September, a new edition of ESCULTORES EN VIVO (Sculptors live) might be staged, the spectacular event that highlights not only sculpture but the work of the sculptor in particular. This is an open event for sculptors from all backgrounds, organised by a group around Pedro Hormigo. The participants gather for a week in order to create outdoors on public ground and in view of all, a sculpture from beginning to end. This offers the opportunity to see how the individual artists work and which techniques they use to carry out their respective project. Thus giving the viewer a more comprehensive picture of the work involved in creating a sculpture. The sculptor, who normally works reclusively in his studio, has to move the equipment and tools needed to his work place on the street. This may be difficult as some techniques require a fair number of tools that are not easily transported.

Of course, this means also a change of perspective for the artist, since he receives comments and gets to know different viewpoints of people at different stages of manufacture. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also fun to work together, watching others make their sculptures and often learning new things. Some melt bronze, others carve wood, twist wires, weld metal or create moulds for mortar. Some chisel stone, creating a somewhat picturesque landscape that sometimes feels like travelling in time. Passers-by may ask curious questions about anything that catches their attention, or engage in conversation with some of the artists who will kindly explain. At first, nobody has an idea what the others are intending to do, but soon things are taking shape. But the shape is constantly being transformed until the process finally comes to an end.

When all the sculptures have been finished, they are brought to the showroom provided by the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cultural department, for exhibition to the public. Nonetheless, the officials are not the ones who decide who wins this contest, but the very sculptors, who watched the process of creating all the pieces in detail. By voting they determine the winner of the competition who is awarded a cash prize. The transaction also passes the winning sculpture into possession of the Cultural Department which will dispose of it as it pleases. This is the spirit of Escultores en vivo, an event created to break the distance between the observer and the creator, to deeper understand the skills involved in creating successfully a piece from beginning to end, and for people to really get to know the various processes to execute sculptures. At going to press, it is not yet confirmed where and when the Escultores en vivo event will be held in 2015. The ideal date would be at the end of September as the weather would still be fair but not as hot as in summer. But it remains to be confirmed if it will take place in Ibiza town again as in the past. The ART CLUB IBIZA has supported the event from its beginnings, and the editorial staff of the RUTA DEL ARTE hopes and trusts that the project will take place again. According to Pedro Hormigo, godfather of the first edition, future editions might get even more ambitious and try to create a public monument, even beyond Ibiza. acida en Nancy (Francia), creció en Ibiza, lugar donde ha vuelto a instalarse recientemente tras haber vivido 15 años en Granada, Londres y Bruselas. Su especialidad : el collage. Esta técnica gráfica, originaria del movimiento dadaísta de principios del siglo XX, consiste en asociar elementos heterogéneos recuperados para componer una nueva obra unitaria. Las obras de Lila experimentan la intimidad heterogénea que pueden evocar los famósos collages de Max Ernst, John Heartfield o Jacques Prévert, donde la destreza gráfica se asocia a ideas desenfrenadas, poéticas, absurdas e incluso políticas. Sus composiciones imitan a las de los surrealistas, oscilando entre la sensibilidad y el humor corrosivo, constituyendo la técnica del collage el aliado perfecto de este proceso artístico, fundado en el desvío de las imáges emanantes del excedente de nuestra sociedad iconográfica. e inició muy joven en el mundo de la fotografía. A los 13 años, se compró una cámara SLR y tomó un poco de experiencia con la luz y el contraste. Tras su formación en el campo de la ingeniería eléctrica, dejó la cámara de lado y se dedicó al estudio de la informática. En 2005 descubrió Ibiza y asimismo su amor por la fotografía. Casi olvidada la experiencia

de la fotografía analógica, la convierte en una forma moderna y digital ahora por mantener el atractivo de las cámaras de película. Tras unos experimentos iniciales en procesamiento de imágenes digitales, ahora se centra en el desarrollo de imágenes por ordenador donde simula las antiguas técnicas de amplificación analógica del laboratorio.

After his training in the area of Electric Engineering he lay his camera aside and dedicated himself to computer science. In 2005 he discovered Ibiza for himself and likewise rekindled his long forgotten interest in

photography. Transposing his experience in analogous photography into modern digital techniques, he manages to capture the charm of analogous photography. After initial experiments in image processing, he now focuses on the development of images on his computer simulating old techniques of analogous magnification in a lab.

Currently she complements painting with photography and imparts workshops to share her knowledge in both fields. Her recent work in painting is the abstract “Constellations” series, inspired by the universe, astronomy, and the mystery that’s around all and nothing at the same time.

Se siente como en casa en todo el mundo y a la vez en ninguna parte, se enamora de Ibiza en 1997 – del mar infinito. Sintió que aquí se cumpliría su sueño de volverse ‘un ser de luz, un angel del sueño, una estrella entre las estrellas’ como escribió Djelal ed din Rumi. En 2003 una amiga – la reconocida pintora Traute Nierth basado en la isla de Sylt– la instigó a experimentar con la pintura bajo el lema ‘del color a la forma’. Y resultó que esa frase le iba a significar el mundo: pidió movimiento, baile, energía elemental y color a gritos. Desde entonces, pintar en Ibiza significa para ella sumergirse en la vida y la infinidad del mar.

El gran hombre de letras, médico y monje Shaolin Shi De Qian se prestó de maestro y se volvió su ‘abuelo buddhista’. También enseñó en el conservatorio superior de música del territorio del Sarre. A partir de los años 90 se dedicó a escribir libros, entre otros ‘Eine Frau reist allein durch die Welt’ (Una mujer viaja sola por el mundo), ‘Gesichter der Liebe’ (Caras del amor), ‘Endstation Alzheimer’ (Estación terminal Alzheimer). At home everywhere and nowhere in the world, in 1997 she falls in love with Ibiza - with the infinite sea. She felt her dream of becoming ‘a light being, an angel of dream, a star among the stars’ as Djelal ed din Rumi described it, might come true here. In 2003, a friend of hers, the renowned painter Traute Nierth based on the Isle of Sylt, inspired her to experiment with colour according to the motto ‘From colour to form’. To her this phrase became meaningful. It cried out for movement, dance, elemental energy, for colour and power. Ever since then, painting on Ibiza means immersing herself in life and the infinite sea.

uan Vallet Martínez, más conocido como Bejas, es un artista multidisciplinario. Hace pintura, diseños de piel (zapatos, bolsos, etc.) y videoarte. uan Vallet Martínez, better known as Bejas, is a multidisciplinary artist. He paints, designs in leather (shoes, bags, etc.) and video art. His paintings are very expressive and he uses a lot of different techniques and materials. “Being self-taught gives me the privilege to understand art as a search without limits, with a passion that knocks down all taboos”. His designs – all single pieces – are works of art that -as he says- “want to fill a gap in daily life where stereotypes have cancelled out imagination”. Last year he had a solo exhibition at Ibiza’s Hotel Pachá titled Mar d’amor (Sea of love).

gradezco mucho el hecho de que hace 10 años fui invitado a participar en la Ruta del Arte y conocer la gente que forman parte de ella. Me recuerda a la canción de Pink Floyd Tiempo (Dark Side of the Moon) por Roger Waters de la que cito algunas lineas en la versión inglesa. Ya que no pude acudir a la conmemoración de Sola y participar en construir la pirámide frente a Es Vedrá, esta pintura intenta recordarla y a la vez honrar a los constructores. Se trata de la primera pintura que hice a solas después de estudiar pintura al óleo con Antonio Taulé.

And since I could not take part in building the pyramid for Sola at her commemoration at Es Vedrá, this painting is meant to remember her and at the same time honour the builders. It is the first piece on my own after studying oil painting with Antonio Taulé.

Obtuve mi Licenciatura en Bellas Artes en la Universidade de Vigo en la rama de Grabado, Pintura y Fotografía aunque en lo que más me he desarrollado siempre ha sido en la pintura. En mis pinturas el fondo y la figura siempre se funden por medio de formas orgánicas y dinámicas que lo convierten en un todo. Mis obras pueden ser sencillamente formas o incluir alguna figura que casi siempre es femenina, evocando mujeres que pertenecen a mitologías ya olvidadas.

am a Galician artist who settled on the island eight years ago. I obtained my graduation in Fine Arts from the University of Vigo in Engraving, Painting and Photography though I always developed painting in the first place. In my paintings, the background always melts with the figure by way of dynamic and organic forms that convert the different elements into a whole. Sus obras son, en la mayor parte, tondos de madera al óleo. Abarcando desde animales hasta grupos de "actrices" delante de un espejo. "Me siento bien en la figuración emotiva, imaginativa, poética y en el simbolismo con ironía".

His work, in great part, is done in oil on wood and favours animals as subjects as well as groups of ‘actresses’ in front of a mirror. “I feel most at home in figurative painting with an emotional, imaginative, poetic twist and an ironic symbolism.”

imothy trabaja en una gran variedad de técnicas. Dibuja en tinta con punto extremadamente fino, pinta con tinta india, acuarela y óleo. Explora cada técnica hasta su límite, descubriendo diferentes maneras de ver nuestro mundo. "Me interesan las vistas cotidianas. Curiosidad y simplemente observando nuestro alrededor me dan la inspiración de hacerlas más y de presentarlas así como yo las veo". Sus motivos varían entre retratos, escenas de playa, paisajes y animales. Realismo y luz dominan sus obras. imothy uses many different techniques. From drawings done with fine pointed inkpens to india ink to watercolour to oils. In each technique Timothy pushes the limits to explore different ways of seeing our world. “I am fascinated by everyday sights. Curiosity and simply looking at our surroundings inspires me to make it my own, to possess it and show it as I see it. “ Timothy uses subjects ranging from portraits to beach scenes, landscapes and animals. Realism and light dominate most of his work. Looking at the world through the eyes of Timothy Cairns shows us a unique vision, a surprising way of seeing.

a noticia que Sola había fallecido al comienzo del año nos llegó de imprevisto, un shock para la mayoría; ya que ella no consintió que su estado de salud fuera tema de conversación y desvió preventivamente cualquier indicación visible de su estado de salud. Así que todos menos unos pocos iniciados fueron consternados por la noticia. Creció en Múnich y llegó a las Pitiusas en 1984. Inicialmente eligió Formentera, la isla más pequeña y más remota, a su escondite; ya que vió Ibiza como un centro del turismo del cual quería mantener cierta distancia. Sólo en 1988 se rompió el hielo cuando un amigo le mostró Sa Penya. Desde entonces ella fue literalmente conquistada por Ibiza, la isla se volvió su lugar en el mundo que ningún otro podía igualar. En los primeros años se fundó en los éxitos como escenógrafa en Munich, donde había trabajado en el club de moda P1, y así contribuyó al ambiente en Pachá y Amnesia. Michael von Strachwitz la introdujo a la pintura y la equipó con habilidades fotorrealistas. De 1990 hasta su muerte en 1994, Estéban Sánz fue su mentor que la familiarizó con el realismo mágico y le transmitió su afinidad por contenidos espirituales. A continuación, Sola se volvió una de las fuerzas impulsoras de las legendarias fiestas rave al aire libre a finales de los años 90 que tenian lugar en sitios tan espectaculares como inaccesibles. Después del período de fiestas autoorganizadas en la isla, se limitaba a eventos independientes, tales como Namaste en Las Dalias. Pero mas allá de la isla la contrataron para grandes festivales de música en Alemania (Timewarp), Portugal (Boom), Brasil (Universo Paralello). Tuvo su primer exposición de pintura en 1998 en la Galería 'El Pintor', la plataforma de la que surgió el Art Club en 2003 en el que tenía parte desde el principio. Su contribución en particular fue la muestra mensual al aire libre Noche del Arte que continúa hasta al día bajo el nombre 'Luna llena de Arte'. Además, en 2007 daba inicio al desfile anual de arte para vestir Arte en la pasarela, que hasta 2012 vió seis ediciones – un evento multimedia presentando creaciones locas de materiales reciclados en un desfile por una pasarela improvisada. En la pintura, enfocó con preferencia y convicción a las mujeres. Tanit fue el símbolo que plasmó reiteradas veces y que expresa tanto su fascinación por la diosa ambivalente

como destacaba artísticamente su contínua contribución a la identidad de la isla. Absorbía influencias e inspiración de artistas como Abdul Mati Klarwein, Alex Gray, Robert Venosa respecto a la pintura, y de Jonathan Yeo respecto a la técnica del collage que ella desarrolló desde 2006 y que hizo su medio predilecto: ensamblaba fragmentos de fotos – muchos de sus propias obras y las de otros artistas – a formar collages figurativos de gran escala y con una diferenciación sorprendente en los que los fragmentos llevan visiblemente su propio mensaje. No obstante su procedencia heterogenea se funden a formar un complejo conjunto nuevo. Cuando el Art Club se registró como asociación en 2010, Sola fue la opción evidente para su primer presidenta. Además de arte y escenografía cultivó otro tren de creatividad – diseño de moda. Hace años que su marca 'Piratas de Ibiza' forma parte del mercado artesanal en 'Las Dalias' cada sábado durante la temporada. Caracterizado por una tremenda energía y el carisma para conmover los demás, Sola era una mujer de acción contínua y defensora de alternativos modos de vida. Liberal y anárquica, independiente en el sentido de una autonomía que la instó a explorar senderos experimentales, no solo respecto al arte sino también respecto a su forma de vida. Ningún reto a que no respondiera, e incluso de grandes complicaciones sabía sacar algo positivo. Un haz de energía, no sólo con respecto a sus propios esfuerzos, sino capaz de motivar gente para acciones conjuntas, condujo a todos a sobresalir. Se pasaron noches enteras trabajando para terminar algo a tiempo ... como si su vida se hubiese configurado para acabar antes de tiempo. Ella deja un gran vacío en un sentido concreto: Echaremos de menos a su talento para escenificar, para motivar en los esfuerzos colectivos, para plantearse grandes metas sin ser disuadido por los costes. Ella formó un vínculo entre los establecidos y la subcultura, entre viejos y jóvenes – un punto focal para los recién llegados y una plataforma para la escena creativa. Hasta el final, su actitud fue positiva – por fin tengo tiempo para pintar, reflexionó cuando ya le costaba salir de casa ... y tenía una obra empezada en su estudio cuando falleció. La conmemoración en Es Vedrá estuvo a la altura de su modo de vida – fuera de las convenciones comunes, al aire libre, en un día soleado contra el fondo emblematico que ya en la antigüedad fue un lugar predilecto de entierros, una ceremonia espontáneamente inventada sin largos discursos, en cambio, la congregación unida en la actividad de construir un montículo rodeado por un mandala que quien quisiera podía ampliar si tenía una idea y materiales naturales a mano. La gente llegaba y se iba hasta que cayó la noche – una verdadera fiesta de despedida…

he fact that Sola crossed the great divide at the turn of the year, came as a surprise, even shock to most of us; for she had refused to make her health a subject of conversation and would preventively divert from any visible indication of her condition. So everybody apart from a few close friends was consternated when they got the message. Grown up in Munich, Sola came to the Pityusas in 1984 and initially chose Formentera, the smaller and more remote island, as her base. She saw Ibiza as a stronghold of tourism which prompted her to to keep a distance. In1988, she was finally convinced by a friend to explore Sa Penya. Ever since then – she was literally taken by Ibiza – it became her place in the world that could not be matched. During her first years, she followed up her success as a stage decorator in her home town, Munich, where she worked on trendy club P1, and thus in Ibiza helped shaping the ambience in Pacha and Amnesia. Michael von Strachwitz introduced her to painting and provided her with photorealistic skills. From 1990 until his death in 1994, Esteban Sánz became her mentor familiarizing her with his version of Magic Realism and imparting her with the affinity for spiritual content. In the late 90s, Sola made herself a name as one of the driving forces of the legendary open air rave parties on the island, taking place in both spectacular and inaccessible places. After the period of self-organized local festivals came to an end on the island, she focused on independent events, such as Namaste in Las Dalias, and likewise was engaged for major music festivals in Germany (TimeWarp), Portugal (boom), Brazil (Universo Paralello) . Her first individual exhibition as a painter she had in 1998 at the Galería El Pintor, the platform the ArtClub emerged from in 2003 which she was connected to from the very beginning. Her particular contribution was the monthly open air exhibition Noche del Arte, which continues to date as 'Luna llena de Arte' . In addition, she founded the annual wearable art show Art on the Catwalk in 2007, which saw six editions up to 2012 – a multi-media event displaying stunning creations from recycled materials on an improvised runway. In her art, women were her preferred subject, emphasized with persuasion. Tanit became an important symbol that expressed her

fascination with the ambivalent female cult figure and artistically highlights Tanit's persisting contribution to the island's identity. She absorbed influences and was inspired by painters such as Abdul Mati Klarwein, Alex Gray, Robert Venosa, and Jonathan Yeo regarding the collage technique she developed from 2006 and which became her preferred medium: snippets of photos – often taken from reproductions of her own works and those of other artists – she arranged large-scale figurative collages of amazing differentiation in which the bits visibly carry their own message. But despite their heterogeneity they literally fuse into a multi-layered new whole. When the Art Club became a registered association in 2010, Sola was the natural choice for its first president. In addition to art and stage design, she had been busy developing another train of her creativity – fashion design. For years, her label 'Piratas de Ibiza' has been part of the weekly crafts market in Las Dalias during the season. Characterized by tremendous energy and the charisma to motivate others, she seemed a powerhouse of ingenuity and alternative ways of living. Liberal-minded, independent and autonomous, she pursued experimental ways both in the arts and in her private life. Whatever the challenge, even though fraught with numerous complications, she always managed to find something positive in it. A bundle of energy, not only with regard to her own efforts, but also to her ability to motivate joint actions, she drove all parties to peak performance. She would work through several nights in a row in order to achieve her goal ... as if her life was configured to finish sooner. She leaves a big gap in a very concrete sense: we will miss her talent to stage events, to motivate collective efforts, to tackle sizeable tasks without being deterred by the cost. She formed a link between old and young, renown artists and the subculture, a focal point for newcomers and young, and a platform of the creative scene. Until the end, her attitude was positive – finally she had time to paint, she mused... there was a piece in progress when she passed away. The commemoration at Es Vedrá certainly matched her ways – outside common conventions, outdoors, on a sunny day against the backdrop that in ancient times had been a favoured burial place, and a spontaneously invented ceremony without long speeches. The congregation was united, instead, by building a cairn and a surrounding Mandala. which everyone was invited to extend provided he had an idea and natural materials at hand. People kept coming and going till the evening – A genuine farewell party…
