I was “

either going to end up with a life sentence or in the grave. Now that I found Rubicon, I see there is an opportunity.

Dear Friends: I am honored to share our 2013 accomplishments with you. Last year, thanks to you – • Rubicon served nearly 3,400 people • Of the 883 people seeking employment, we placed 657 into jobs • The people we placed into jobs collectively earned more than $17 million • We moved 300+ families into housing • We expanded services to Antioch We achieved these accomplishments despite – The local economy has been radically and structurally impacted by the Great Recession. The East Bay suffered disproportionately high employment losses in the past five years. Unemployment levels here have not rebounded as in other areas, and in fact are higher now than in 2007 (Special Report on the East Bay Workforce, East Bay EDA & BW Research Partners, 2013). That is why your support is so important – The government contracts Rubicon receives lay a good foundation for the work we do but only cover a portion of our costs. Your donations build brighter futures for our clients – who are committed to change when they walk through Rubicon’s doors. Would it surprise you to learn that – • Rubicon supports the healthy, safe, upbringing of 2,000+ children. • Nearly 80% of people Rubicon helps with mental health services are able to reduce their use of high cost emergency psychiatric services. • Rubicon wins over 85% of the legal cases we take on, on behalf of lowincome families and individuals who rely on us to advocate for them.

We are committed to moving ever-growing numbers of homeless people off the streets and into jobs and housing. Rubicon continues to offer new services (industry-specific job training, parenthood coaching, and more) to ensure the positive transformation of local residents returning home after incarceration. In line with national trends, we have begun to integrate health services into our programs to improve clients’ overall physical well-being.

Jane Fischberg President and Executive Director

Our employees come from all walks of life and diverse professional backgrounds. They use their skill, talent, and passion in daily service to Rubicon clients. To train people. Place them in jobs. Find them better housing. Support them through tough times. Help keep them from returning to jail. Teach them how to manage their money. Coach them towards long-term stability for their families.

We find legal solutions that preserve our clients’ basic security and address their most critical needs. This allows them to focus their energy on their health, family and work, instead of wondering where the next dollar for a meal or rent will come from. It’s work that has soul in it.

—Kelly Dunn, General Counsel and Director of Legal Services

Although change can often be anxiety provoking and challenging, without change we wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience new thoughts, ideas and methods of treatment. I have experienced the positive changes at Rubicon and I look forward to making a more positive impact in our clients’ lives. —Megan McKeon, Wellness, Recovery Continuum West Team Leader

We are all here to be a part of the solution. I tell clients, ‘even though our doors are open from 8:30am-5:00pm we are always working for you.’ It’s so nice to see people grow and see all that they accomplish, whether it is completing their GED, getting professional clothes, or having successful interviews- the entire process inspires me.

—Zarifa Rasool, Re-entry Case Coordinator
