Dear Friends: People in our hardest hit communities need intensive support to access the jobs and opportunities that will enable them to move out of poverty. They need positive alternatives to incarceration so they can be there to provide for their families. Rubicon is that alternative, and I am honored to share our 2012 accomplishments with you. Placed Nearly 500 People in Jobs. Rubicon placed more people in jobs last year than at any point in our 40 year history. Our training teaches clients the best ways to connect with employers during the application process. Local businesses trust us to provide them with a diverse set of motivated candidates to fill job openings. Our approach works - Rubicon clients increased their combined annual earnings by more than $12 million last year. Nationwide Recognition. Rubicon is one of just five organizations nationwide to be awarded a special federal grant to make sure that fathers coming out of the criminal justice system can provide financial and emotional support for their children and stay on the right side of the law. This funding enables us to open a new site in Antioch and to serve an additional 150 families in West and East Contra Costa County. Integrated Mental Health and Wellness Care. Rubicon manages care for the whole person and therapy is only one piece of that care. Safe shelter, healthcare, income, money management, and connection to community is all part of the plan for those we serve with serious mental illness. Research tells us that adults with serious mental illness die 25 years earlier than their peers; and while they are alive, their quality of life is poor. We are taking steps to change that. Work with Fathers and Families. We partner with our clients to reverse the negative impact of their incarceration and help the next generation break the cycle of criminality. Upon their release from jail, we provide re-entering fathers with the support they need to reconnect with their families, and to establish themselves as positive role models and providers for their children. I am inspired by the words of a new client, “My little girl told me this morning, Daddy you are my hero, because you are going to school.” - a single father, East Bay resident On behalf of the more than 3,400 people who received support from Rubicon last year, thank you for joining us on the journey of change,

Jane Fischberg President and Executive Director

Our social purpose business, Rubicon Landscapes, beautifies commercial and public grounds – generating critical revenue for our programs. Rubicon Landscape maintains some of the Bay Area’s largest properties including Treasure Island, Yerba Buena Island, and the Coast Guard site that recently welcomed First Lady Michelle Obama.

The individuals that move me are the ones who come in open to change. Desperate for change.  They know they have exhausted all possibility of making their current lifestyle work for them and their families. That is where people are when they come to Rubicon ready to change and ready to reinvent themselves.  Rhody McCoy, Contra Costa County Director of Economic Empowerment

JOB PLACEMENT

AMANDA

“I have gotten a lot of help from Rubicon. When I am down and out, I know they can help.”

Amanda started using meth when she was 18 years old and continued to use until she was 23. She was convicted for possession and served two years in prison -- her sentence was shortened because she agreed to go into treatment. Amanda had a hard time getting a job when she came out of treatment, and she came to Rubicon for help. We helped Amanda with job readiness training, polishing her

resume, and connected her to East Bay employers. Amanda spent almost every day at Rubicon using the computer lab and meeting with her Career Coach – determined to find work. She was hired by two local businesses. Amanda still comes to Rubicon to meet with her Financial Coach. Her goals are to save money and find a better place to live.

HOUSING If it weren’t for Rubicon, Sophia says she’d be homeless. “Each day I stay clean is better than my best day using.” Now, she spends more time with her mother, two sons, and six year old grandson.
