Datos curiosos:

Tips Para Hacer Interesante Tu Curr Culum Vitae

Is the reality in our world constantly changing or is it just an illusion?

Essay by Diego Hernández 602

Philosophy has been debating for centuries on whether our reality is constantly changing or not. The Eleatic School defines the world to be an object of unity and complete order, meaning that any change that we humans may perceive is nonexistent, and in turn, a mere illusion. One philosopher who believed that reality is always changing was Heraclitus.

He argued that everything is in a state of constant flux, and that nothing stays the same. Heraclitus famously stated that "you cannot step into the same river twice," meaning that even a river, which appears to be a constant, is actually always changing. For Heraclitus, change was the fundamental nature of the universe, and there was nothing that could be considered permanent or unchanging. Parmenides, a prominent Eleatic philosopher, argued that change was impossible, because for something to change, it must first come into being and then cease to be. However, if something has come into being, it must have come from nothing, which is impossible. Therefore, according to Parmenides, change is an illusion and reality is unchanging.

Despite the contrasting views of Heraclitus and the Eleatics, both schools of thought have influenced the development of philosophy and science throughout history. In modern physics, the concept of change is central to the theory of relativity, which argues that time and space are not fixed, but rather are relative and subject to change. However, the idea of an unchanging reality has also been influential, particularly in the development of metaphysics and theology.

I would side with Heraclitus on this one, since I believe that the world is in a constant change, and there is currently not an occasion were it is the same, nor will there be in the future. My reasoning for this is quite similar to the argument provided by Heraclitus. Sure, one might have a daily routine that can be condemned as repetitive, but, even as repetitive as it might be, your days will never be the same. Sure, you might do the same things over and over again, but are you doing them exactly as you did them the day before? Or did you do the things as you did them 2 days ago? In fact, have you ever done things exactly the same on two separate occasions?

Another example would be my walk home. For starters, I do not even take the same route every time I go home. And on the days I do, it is still different; I do not see the same people, and even if I do, its rarely I see them in the same place I saw them the day before, or two weeks ago. But if for some reason I take the same exact route, I see the exact same people at the exact place I saw them the day before, I listened to the same music as the day before in the exact same order with the same volume, things would not be the same. Why? Because, a) I would not step in the same dirt particles as I stepped in the day before (among other miniscule things that make the instances differ), b) my reality is not an objective one (even though I might do everything in my power to make things exactly the same, other people might do something they didn’t do the day before, therefore it is a different instance), and c) I already have consciousness from the previous instance so it automatically demonstrates change and things are automatically different when compared to another situation. So that is my argument as to why I believe our world and reality are constantly changing.
