1 - Tell us more about yourself?

I

am a Zimbabwean acoustic soul singer – I grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe, and music was always a big part of our family. All of us played something, and often made music together. My mum taught me guitar and trumpet, and we had a piano in the house that I learnt on. I studied music at University in the USA ad then moved to Cape Town, South Africa to start recording and performing, whilst flying to Zimbabwe and London often for shows and festivals.

2 - What drives you and keep you motivated to write your music? Music itself drives me I think – I have a deep seeded love for it, and it comes naturally to me – it feels like home to be o stage, and it feels like breathing to write.

3 - How long have you been in the music industry? Full time I have been in the industry for about 3 years. I was 12

involved whilst studying too – performing at festivals such as HIFA and Miombo Magic, but the last 3 years I have been working on my music, recording and performing full time – I have loved every second of it.

4 - What are the challenges you face daily as a distinguished female musician? I think an underestimation of female musicians still exists – however – I don’t underestimate myself, which means I can hopefully just prove them wrong. We are our biggest challenge – what we believe we can do, and how we go about achieving this… I think if you have a strong sense of direction and are willing to work hard, outside challenges are a lot easier to face.

5 - Who has always been your inspiration in this music industry and why? I’ve had a few – Baba Tuku was a big influence for me. He is incredibly humble, works hard and is a prolific writer. To be able to write as much music as he has, and all of it unique to him and

™ROYAL • ROUGE | LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

beautiful is a wonder to watch and experience. I have had the privilege of performing with him twice – and he is so at ease on stage, behind his guitar – a true musician. Amy Winehouse was also a big influence musically for me – her voice and musical style were revolutionary and I connected with her music instantly – its timeless.

6 - One Artist you would love to do collaboration with, who can it be?

T

uku – for all the reasons I stated above, and Ammara Brown – she is a strong, fierce female artist taking the industry by storm, and I have so much respect for her.

7 – What do you do on your spare time beside music? I dance – I love dancing, and have done it since I was young. I also paint, my mum is an artist and she taught me so much. I also loooove travelling.

The Basics of Makeup

N

ow that we’ve covered when you should hire a makeup artist (i.e., always except when taking still shots of men, and even then consider it), let’s move on to the basics of makeup. The goal here is not to teach makeup application – for that, you would need books or a personal lesson in makeup. Instead, it’s to give you a grasp of the terminology and tools of makeup so that you can effectively collaborate with your makeup artist on set.

Base

A makeup artist will start by applying base (foundation, 16

primer, concealer, and powder). The purpose of base is to smooth out the complexion, reduce redness and shine, and conceal under-eye darkness, wrinkles, and scars. A good base is especially important in video, where blemished skin is a nightmare to correct retroactively. Tools like Digital Anarchy’s Beauty Box can help, but it’s not a replacement for makeup done right in the first place. When applying base, a makeup artist will often start by putting on primer, a clear gel that fills in pores and enables makeup application to go on more smoothly. Then, foundation is used to even out skin tone

™ROYAL • ROUGE | LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

and create a clear canvas for makeup. I’ve found that on older subjects, powder foundation can settle into pores and accentuate fine lines. I prefer to mix liquid foundation with water (to make it more sheer), and then apply concealer where needed to cover spots and blemishes. Many makeup artists will use a separate concealer for the under-eye area and a drier, more concentrated one to cover spots and blemishes. One of my favorite tricks is to use a highlighting pen on top of concealer to add radiance to the skin. This can do wonders for brightening aging skin:

BEAUTY • BLOG

When a makeup artist is done with the base, he will set the concealer with powder. This prevents the powder blushes and shadows from grabbing onto creamy spots on the skin.

Cheeks

I like to apply a neutral bronzer along the temples on both women and men to define the bone structure and to give the illusion of more defined cheekbones. A highlighting powder can also be swept right on top of the cheekbones to create more dimension. On women, blush is blended over the bronzer to create a soft, natural flush.

here. With stills, it’s not too difficult to do it in Photoshop on a single image, but getting it to look consistent between different shots may be tricky. And, again, don’t underestimate the confidence that can come from feeling beautiful with makeup on. Eye makeup is often especially striking on women with light eyes and features. Here, purple shadows and liner are used to define the model’s green eyes: I often think of applying eyeshadow as a way of faceting a gem (the eye) for maximum brilliance. Here, too, shadow is used to contour the subject’s eyes and reveal depth: As a part of the overall eye look, a makeup artist will often define the brows. I like to use a pencil to lightly color in strokes, and then use a powder to soften the look.

change on set, so if you want to take several shots with different wardrobe, lighting, or set, having your makeup artist change the lip color can be a quick way to complement the new setting. You may be surprised at how changing from a neutral to a bold lip color can instantly alter the mood of the makeup.

“The glamour look when you go out on a date” remeber you don’t wanna look too much, you wanna keep it simply, the products that i use for this look are: Kryoln foundation it has concealer it help to cover the spots in your face. A Blackopel brown eyelin to darken my eyebrows A mac concealer to shape my eyebrows, then i use my foundation to cover the concealer

Eyes

Using shadow, eyeliner, and mascara, a skilled makeup artist can really bring out the color and accentuate the shape of your subject’s eyes. Unlike evening out skin tone, applying eyeshadow in when post-processing video is extremely difficult if not impossible, so hiring a makeup artist can make a big difference

Lips

Lips can be defined using lipstick, lip pencil, gloss, or all three. Depending on the look that you are going for, the lip color can be the center of attention or tie in a monochromatic look. Lip color is also the easiest aspect of makeup to

Types Of Men Every Woman Wants”

There are some men who seem to be natural magnets for the opposite sex, attracting women like light does moths. Then there are those other men who have a knack for making females flee, repelling them like maggots do, well, women. And while some suggest that the difference between these two camps comes down to minor personality nuances, those who do so usually fall into the latter category - and they’re wrong.

What women want?

Are you confused about what women are looking for? Well, iVillage.com unravels some of that mystery for you by revealing the types of men women are looking to date. Read through the five categories of men and see if you are one of the eligible bachelors she’s looking for.

Dating around

So, you want a boyfriend. You’re sick of the singles scene and ready to move right past “Go” and settle down with someone who will carry you straight into your happily ever after. Well, hold it right there, Miss Antsy-Pants! Before you go tango into the sunset with Mr. Right, you have to take a few spins around the dating dance floor with a few Mr. Right Knows. Dating different personality types is the most effective way to find out your likes, dislikes and deal breakers. In fact, spending time with the wrong guys — namely these five — can actually make you a better package when Mr. Fabulous comes along.

TIPS • FOR HIM

1. Mr. Nice Romantic Guy

He’ll show up with flowers, leave cards around your apartment and quote Keats on a whim. Think old-fashioned courtship where you’re being wooed instead of sitting by the phone wondering if he’ll call. Celebrity counterparts: Cary Grant, Johnny Depp as Don Juan DeMarco What he’ll teach you: This affectionate man will show you a softer side of our male counterparts (what a relief to have someone fawn over you for a change!), all the while raising your expectations of how you wish to be treated. After realizing that there are guys out there who understand the importance of a random note or kiss in the moonlight, you’ll be less likely to stay with someone who degrades or ignores you in the future. The catch: Most of the time, these guys are in love with the idea of love. This means they will come on strong but lose momentum in the long haul as the reality of a relationship sets in (i.e. disagreements, uneventful days), but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t date him and enjoy the

experience. Just keep a level head while he floats around you.

2. Mr. Big Shot

He dresses sharp, talks slick and has the perfectly coiffed looks of a man straight out of a lad mag. One look at him in his tailored suit and you’re toast — which is exactly why he wears it. Celebrity counterparts: Chris Noth as Mr. Big, any Bond What he’ll teach you: From sending your nether regions to Brazil (Mr. Big Shot doesn’t do granny panties) to the proper way to age a Cabernet, you’re in for a crash course in the finer way of life. Dinners will be fourstar and the conversation will be witty. You’ll walk away from this relationship more sophisticated and well aware of your own inner vixen. Channel your inner Antonio Banderas or Frank Sinatra… The catch: As the 007 of romance, he’s going in for the kill. He knows exactly what he’s doing and the effect it’s having on you — and every other girl around him. The odds of this guy slipping out of

his suit and into a comfy relationship are low, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy the smooth ride around the town while it lasts.

3. Mr. Sexy Older Guy

He’s old enough to have settled into his skin and has been involved with enough women to know that you require much more than dinner and a few martinis to get into the mood. Best of all, he never makes you late for dinner because he’s playing Xbox. Celebrity counterparts: Sean Connery, Antonio Banderas What he’ll teach you: He has a lifetime of experience to share (in and out of the bedroom), which will likely keep you on your toes (and curling them, too!). Plus, he’ll show you how to see life in a different way. No matter how long it lasts or how it ends, you’ll walk away worldlier — and will never settle for a measly five minutes of foreplay again.

™ROYAL • ROUGE | LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

21

The catch: Despite what Demi and Ashton might say, age is more than a number. If you are just starting to get comfortable in your skin and he’s shed his several times, there is a good chance you’ll have issues with long-term compatibility. Sure, he’s hot now, but how will you feel in 10 years? Give one another a thrill, then move onto someone you both can relate to.

4. Mr. Man’s Man

He carries your bags, will defend your honor and would rather swallow glass than shave his chest or take hot wax to his eyebrows. Celebrity counterparts: Frank Sinatra, Russell Crowe What he’ll teach you: This rough rogue will have you relishing in your femininity like no other. Why? There is something about raw masculinity that brings out the damsel in all of us. Dating this bruiser will show you how fun it can be when he shows you who the man is (think Rhett Butler when he scooped Scarlett up those stairs). Dating 22

him will do one of two things: make you squeal with delight or appreciate your ability and right to wear the pants sometimes. Regardless, be sure to play Scarlett at least once — trust us. The catch: You’re dying to be wined and dined, but he’s already made plans to meet you down at the pub. This is the guy who gets inspired by Braveheart and cries only “out of frustration.” He’s also prone to affairs… with his favorite sports teams. Oh, and forget about asking him to hold your purse while you do anything — he wouldn’t dare. 5. Mr. Fun Social Guy Whether he’s out with friends or meeting the family for brunch, one thing’s for certain: He’s going to be the life of the party. Celebrity counterparts: Will Farrell, Vince Vaughn What he’ll teach you: There is something very attractive about a man who’s always ready to have a good time. You’ll laugh a lot and learn how to go with the flow and let things slide. These types are often quite

™ROYAL • ROUGE | LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

spontaneous, which means you should be ready for anything from a quickie to a quick dash to Vegas. The catch: Most people are social because they like the company of others, but Fun Social Guys are social because they love to be the center of attention — and they love the excitement of something new. This poses an issue for long-term loves because: A) Who wants to be an audience member 24/7, and B) Let’s face it: Relationships can get dull at times — what will he do then? Enjoy the roller-coaster ride, but don’t be afraid to walk away to more stable ground. You’ve taken the personality test and read up on the type of guy you want to be; now find out about the 8 Types Of Guys Women Avoid. KITCHEN CORNER • EAT SMART

OOST B YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM Now comes the fun part. You get to shop for and create your own juice combinations. Do you want to begin juicing for detox? Juicing for mental clarity? Or do you simply want to add more juices to your diet to achieve balance? The produce you choose to juice will really depend on your personal needs as well as what’s in season and available where

you are.

Here are some popular and ultra effective juicing ingredients: Green Leaf Lettuces

Leafy green lettuces are an excellent addition to your juices. They are abundant in vitamins, minerals, and protein -- and are not offensive to the taste buds. The darker the green, the higher the mineral content, and the more intense the flavor of its juice. If you want to reap the benefits of lettuce in your juice, but are skeptical of the taste, try juicing a combo of darker and lighter greens to balance out the flavor. You can also use lettuce, like romaine to help balance out sharper tasting juices like ginger, fennel, garlic, and cilantro.

38

™ROYAL • ROUGE | LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

Ginger

Ginger is a spicy root vegetable that can help add zest to your green juices. Sometimes adding ginger can flavor a juice well enough to eliminate to temptations to add sweeter fruits. Of course, anything that you can do to reduce your sugar intake will help promote optimum health.

KITCHEN CORNER • EAT SMART

Juice it All!

Ginger relaxes the intestinal tract so it is very good for reducing nausea, gas and bloating. Studies have even shown that ginger’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties have helped reduce symptoms in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. (Murray, 155-156)

Garlic

Garlic is one of those tastes that you may have to work up to when it comes to adding it to your juice. But again, since juice is so readily available to your cells, you never really need to drink too much of it at once. Garlic has been known to have antibacterial and anti-microbial affects, enhance your immune system, eliminate heavy metals, and help balance cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and candida. Buy fresh plump garlic for juicing. To juice it, simply peel the white papery skin and run a clove or two through your favorite juicer. (Murray 152)

Fennel

Whenever possible, juice your entire fruit or vegetable including seeds, skins, stems and rinds. The seeds and skins of produce often hold most of their nutritional power. This also makes it more beneficial to buy organic produce.

Fennel, like ginger, adds a certain spicy quality to your juice and can be a good addition if you wish to keep your juices more vegetable-based. Fennel tastes like black licorice and has been known to have many medicinal properties. Besides being a digestive aid and useful in the reduction of gas, just like ginger – fennel also contains phytoestrogens which is especially useful to women during menopause. When juicing fennel, use both the stem and the bulb. It does have a very intense flavor. If you’ve never had fennel or fennel juice before, do a taste test to determine how much of it you want to drink or if you need to add it to other juices. (Murray, 150)

Mint

Mint is very cooling and refreshing. You can add it to your juice to enhance the flavor and make your greens more palatable. Juicing mint is much like cilantro and grasses. You want to use a very high quality juicer like the Twin Gear to get the most out of your juice. But, you can also just blend it and add it directly to your juices, or blend and strain it before adding it to other juices.

Lemon and Limes

Lemons and Limes are a great way to sweeten your juice without raising blood sugar or feeding infections (yes, infections will feed on all of the sugars in your foods, even natural sugars). Lemons and limes are very high in vitamin C and are great for assisting circulation and enhancing the skin. (Crocker, 100) You can juice the entire ™ROYAL • ROUGE | LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

AUDITION TIPS Hi guys, here are 15 audition tips that will help you get any acting gig

1. Confidence: it sounds simple but it takes practice. Walk in the door with your held head high. Be wary of shuffling feet. You don’t get sympathy points if you’re nervous, not feeling well, or having a ad day, leave it outside the door. 2. Personality: let it shine through. Don’t give one word answers when having a conversation with the casting director. Ask questions! The industry is looking for smart curious actors. 3.

Connection: make

one with the reader. Memorize the material or be familiar enough with it to maintain eye contact. Knowing the dialogue is important, but making a connection with the reader is what will make the scene natural and believable. 4. Character: know the character. Read the entire script beforehand to pick-up as many clues as possible. We know about a character by the following, what he/she says 46

about himself/herself. What other characters say about him/ her. What the playwright or screenwriter says about him/her. 5. Objective: go underneath the dialogue. what does he/she want from the other character’s purpose in the scene/story? 6. Obstacle: what’s in the way of the character getting what he/she wants? Acting is what happens to you as you try to get your objective met, in spite of the obstacle. 7. Opposites: yelling isn’t the only way to show hatred or anger. Sometimes being quiet as you make your point is a powerful display off emotion. Playing opposites is a much more interesting choice than the obvious. 8. Love: find the love in the scene. Even nasty characters should be likeable on some level find a moment in the scene where the love can show through. 9. Act: acting means to do, not to talk. Find your actions and play them! A wonderful resource is the book ‘actions: the actor’s thesaurus’ by Marina Caldarone and Maggie Lloyd –

™ROYAL • ROUGE | LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

Williames. 10. Variety: feel the levels and dynamic in the scene. Don’t play one emotion. If the character is angry or tough, when might he/she show some vulnerability? 11. Interesting, memorable auditions will start to happen for you when you dig into scripts with these thoughts in the mind before and during your auditions. Master your craft! Empower yourself! Enjoy the journey.. 12. Remember that auditioning/casting/hiring is not a science it is an art. 13. Not every actor can do ever role- know what you can and can’t do and what you want to do! 14. Jobs are won or lost in the audition! Audition classes must be taught by working professionals as the rules change every year! 15. Audition fears must be conquered and considered a “positive way to spend time”. Auditions should be the best part of your day someone sits and watches you act! @auditionsalert

WINTER

TRENDS

HI Stylish people. Winter is the most amazing season because dressing up is so much fun and layering clothing is awesome and shows off your fashion sense and style a lot more than what it would in any other season. Even though we all love summer, I think winter is the time we slay the most. Just because its cold doesn’t mean we can’t dress up and play around with styles.

What’s trending at the moment?

•V

Well where do I start? There is so much trending at the moment but I’ll highlight the ones that I love and think you guys should be following.

ibrant colours Get away from wearing black all the time and try to wear colours that pop such as Red, Yellow,Blue,Green. It makes a hell of a difference when you wear a popping colour in winter because you immediately stand out in a crowd.

• Beanies

Yes it’s still a thing and probably will always be. It’s something that will never go out of fashion and is so easy to style.

• Baby Bags We bringing back a lot of the 90’s trends and I’m lovin’ it. The baby bags are so cute and hella stylish. It completes any outfit.

Remember not everyone has the same style and trends change all the time but just because we like trends, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we are stylish. Being stylish and trendy is in fact different however compliments one another. Being stylish means you know how to pair items together and you’re not afraid to try something new and be creative, Trends basically just compliment all of that.

My favourite quote from a very wellknown fashion icon says the following “Fashion has to reflect who you are, what you feel at the moment, and where you’re going. It doesn’t have to be bright, doesn’t have to be loud, it just has to be you.” Pharrell Williams clearly has the fashion scene on lockdown and with his inspiring words we can all be fashionable people. Style is laid back and I am not afraid to play around with my styles. I’m always down to try new things regarding fashion and set new trends not just for people to follow but for people to feel comfortable in knowing that each of us have our own unique style and we shouldn’t be afraid to express ourselves.

Casual with a touch of class or simply just casual with a twist.

Depending on your style and mood, It’s easy to compliment outfits and to keep it very simple as well. I like to work with what I have and what I can use to pair up items. So here is what works well evidently. I absolutely love this outfit because it’s so simple yet classy and trust me it’s not hard to style this. Tapered pants are in right now, whether you style it with heels or sneakers it looks stylish either way.
