Digital Design - Module 01 Semester 1, 2018 Roujin Wu

Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
Signs are divided into icon, symbol and index. An icon is a sign which itself expresses the qualities of its dynamic object such as a pencil; an index is a sign which illustrates the influence of its dynamic object such as smoke-fire; a symbol is a sign which refers to its dynamic object through a formal representation such as play button on video player. However. diagrams are opposed to signs, symbols, index or icons, they don’t play a representational role for their dynamic object, performence depends on how they deployed.

The main tool this model using is booleandifference in Rhino. The shape of the Radix is a square cut by 2 spheres and 1 ellipsoid. Related learning reference - Rhino Tutorial 7 Booleans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djh7ZSxuYYQv

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
The pavilion Aires Mateus Radix is a sculpture installed nearby the docks of the Arsenale which represents the spirit of cultural recombination. Besides of acting as a sculpture, the radix is also a space for people to stand in the shadow to take a rest and children would like to move across. The Radix stands in three corners, with one point pendent above the water, people can get inside and look at the reflection, according to David Basulto (2012) the sculture is to illustrate ‘researching and proposing are acts of cultural recombination, which allow dialogue and reflection to meet‘, instead of building the sculpture into a representative shape, the radix more likely to involve people inside the sculpture and let themselves to feel the spirit. Isometric
Aires Mateus - Radix Circulation refers to the pathway people used to move through or around the building, Threshold refers to a zone of passage or pause between two spaces. Inside the Radix itself, the space is divided by three arch holes in th middle; on the other hand, the Radix was built by the water, water is also included in the design process, that the water reflection creates another mirrored space, the threshold between the reality and the reflection is the water level itself. People can walk through the arch holes in the middle, including a lower one which is passable only for small children.
