Rosewood Arts Center is dedicated to enriching the quality of life for the residents of Kettering and the greater Dayton area by providing creative experiences through the arts. Rosewood presents over 400 classes annually for youth and adults, as well as gallery exhibitions, theatre performances, artist studios and special events. A division of the City of Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, Rosewood is supported and programmed by the City of Kettering, with additional support provided by the Ohio Arts Council.

RO S E WO O D G A L L E RY EXHIBITIONS JANUARY 24 – FEBRUARY 25 32ND ANNUAL WORKS ON PAPER EXHIBITION The beloved annual Works on Paper Juried Exhibition returns for its 32nd year, featuring artists living within a 40- mile radius of Dayton, Ohio. This year’s exhibition was juried by artist and educator Willis Bing Davis, renown for his paintings, sculptures, drawings, and his work as an arts advocate and educator. The exhibition is viewable in person at Rosewood and virtually. The exhibition is free and open to all ages.

MARCH 14 – APRIL 22 SOLO EXHIBITIONS Rosewood Gallery features the work of emerging and established artists from across the United States in a series of solo exhibitions. The announcement of the 2022 solo artist exhibitions is available on the gallery website.

This is a pottery class for teens that focuses on developing skills with the potter’s wheel. Beginners learn basic centering and form-building. Youth Sewing Night Ages: 10 – 18

Kids have the opportunity to troubleshoot sewing projects with a pro. Tracy McElfresh will be on site to answer sewing questions and help with problem solving. Dance classes are conducted in the Rosewood Arts Center dance studio. Street shoes are not allowed on the dance studio floor. YOUTH THEATRE Kettering Children’s Theatre

Ages: 9 – 15 The Kettering Children’s Theatre production is a youth theatre program for elementary through junior high students. The theatre program produces two plays per year. Prerequisites are the Basic Theatre Instruction and/or Advanced Theatre Instruction classes at Rosewood Arts Center or by permission of the instructor. If you have previous theatre experience but have not taken either class at Rosewood you may perform a monologue at auditions. The monologue must be memorized. Monologues will be available in the Rosewood Arts Center front office. All potential participants are encouraged to take at least one acting class or a summer camp. Students are required to make a commitment to three rehearsal sessions per week. Parent participation is strongly encouraged. A mandatory parent meeting is scheduled for January 11, from 5 to 6 p.m. Registration deadline for the fall production is January 11, 2022. Basic Theatre Instruction

Ages: 9 – 15 This class provides instruction in the basic theatre skills of pantomime, movement, voice and diction, improvisation, script work, audition techniques and performing a monologue. Advanced Theatre Instruction

Ages: 9 – 15 This course builds on the skills gained in Basic Theatre Instruction. We will focus on proper breathing techniques, voice projection, speech and diction exercises, audition techniques (Including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces), developing a character, and performing a short play. The final play will be performed before an audience. Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for the depth of work required. Prerequisite: Basic Theatre Instruction. YOUTH LANGUAGE Intro to Japanese Language and Culture: Part I

Ages: 13 – 17 This course provides an introduction to Japanese and is geared toward the student with little to no knowledge or command of the language. Students learn word pronunciations, basic grammatical rules, simple sentence structures, and vocabulary taught at the novice level. Students are also introduced to hiragana, the most basic form of writing in Japanese. The student will develop basic conversational and reading comprehension skills by engaging in culturally authentic learning material and meaningful activities. This is a beginning class for students with little to no hand building experience. Instruction is given for making tiles, vessels and sculptural forms using clay slabs and coils. Intermediate Wheel Pottery Class will focus on creating larger pots, refining shapes and challenging students to become better potters. Get unique and beautiful glaze results using our reduction kiln and cone 10 specific glazes. Patrons may use up to 3 cubic feet of space per firing included in the cost of class or open studio use. Cost of additional space needed in a single firing is $20 per cubic ft. Firings are scheduled when enough work is generated to fill the kiln (generally once a month). Anyone interested in firing work in the reduction kiln may sign up for an individual orientation in the Rosewood office.

Beginning Watercolor

Intro Oil Painting is the place to start for those who are curious but have very little or no experience with the medium. Students learn enough of the basics to get started.

Adult Machine Basics

Are you feeling creative and want to take an art class but don't know where to start? Art for the Extreme Beginner is a crash course in a small sampling of different art media. Try your hand at painting, clay, printmaking and more. A different material will be introduced each week. Absolutely no art experience required! Learn to use your sewing machine or borrow one of Rosewood's in a fun setting. Students review threading, stitches, tension, bobbins, bobbin winding, parts of the machine, accessories and trouble shooting. Pattern Reading, Layout & Drafting Ages: 16+

Pattern reading and layout is Tracy’s favorite. Students learn the history of pattern sizing, how to take measurements, how to read a sewing pattern, popular symbols, tips on buying patterns and much more. As a special bonus there is an extra hour for this class to draft a simple A-line skirt pattern. Class focuses on painting landscapes with demonstrations and handson experience. Beginners will gain experience, learning in the basics about brushes, paints and other materials to use. Enjoy a creative alternative to standard jewelry. This class requires minimal tools, no soldering and is completely portable. Basic Jewelry Construction

Students push their watercolor skills beyond the basics in this course. This class is for students who have experience in watercolor and wish to continue to hone their skills while learning new methods and techniques. Previous watercolor experience required.

This class is an introduction to the basics of jewelry construction. Students will explore a project from start to finish and gain knowledge of sawing, filing, soldering and polishing. Brass and copper for one project is included and tools will be provided.

This class guides students step-by-step through the process of joining two pieces of metal. Students begin by working on brass and copper, to learn the soldering techniques of butt soldering, standing seams, sweat soldering and more. After a little practice, students then have the opportunity to complete a beautiful sterling silver ring, with a cabochon bezel setting. This course offers an introduction to Japanese language and culture by exploring Japan’s rich history, society, arts, beliefs, etc. Students are introduced to cultural topics, such as Japanese hospitality known as “Omotenashi”, the art of calligraphy, and even Japanese home cooking. This course is a continuation of the Conversational Japanese class. FACILITY INFORMATION OPEN STUDIO Rosewood Arts Center Open Studios Ready to bring your work to the next level? Take advantage of affordable and professionally equipped spaces. Call 937-296-0294 for available hours and required orientations or prerequisites.

VISITOR POLICY: All participants and observers must pay open

studio fees to use open studios.. Children under 5 years old are not permitted in open studio. Those under 16 must be supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older (no more than two children per adult). All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, must sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-in-progress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended.

STUDENT POLICY: Adult students currently enrolled in studio

classes will receive a student pass card for four sessions of studio time. Students staying over 30 minutes after the end of class must sign in and use this pass card. Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded or considered a donation to Rosewood.

Rosewood Arts Center Canceled Classes

Rosewood Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any class and to substitute faculty when necessary. Classes will be canceled three working days prior to the starting date when there is insufficient enrollment.

Artist Studios

Artist studios are available at Rosewood Arts Center for artists with an active practice and a commitment to sharing their work with the Kettering community. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed as studio spaces become available. Studio spaces start at $85/month for Kettering residents. POTTERY STUDIO: Clay fee of $20 includes 25 pounds of clay and

related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home. You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to one (1) cubic foot every two weeks of kiln use. Attendance at a free pottery studio orientation is required of all first-time participants.

DARKROOM: Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate

previous experience in black and white darkroom processes and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment. Please note that due to renovations, facility rentals and glass open studio are temporarily unavailable.

RESIDENT STATUS

To receive resident rates when attending drop-in and/or daily admission activities or registering for a program, Kettering residents or a person working in Kettering must produce identification. The following sources of I.D. are accepted as proof of residency.

Living in Kettering: • A valid Ohio driver’s license with Kettering address.

• Current utility bill with Kettering address, accompanied by a valid photo I.D.

Working in Kettering:

• Pay stub that includes City of Kettering income tax withholding.

Youth (defined as persons 17 or younger):

• School I.D.s are accepted for youth 17 and under. The Resident Card has been designed to identify resident/non-resident users. The Resident Card will provide quick identification at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts facilities or programs and identify them to be entitled to the Kettering resident fee. The free Resident Card can be obtained at any information desk.

PAYMENT METHODS

The City will accept cash, personal checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) and money orders for the payment of fees. The City can only accept debit cards that can be processed as credit cards (non-pin). The City will charge a $25 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Checks should be made payable to: City of Kettering.

CONFIRMATION

For Mail-in and Drop-off Registrations

Once your registration is processed, a confirmation will be emailed to you including your class enrollment status. If we were unable to place you in a class, your payment will be returned to you.

LATE REGISTRATION

Late registrations will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. After the second class meeting, no registrations will be accepted. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee.

REFUND POLICY

Our commitment is to make your experience successful. If you would like a refund, please contact us to discuss your experience. Refund requests must be made within two weeks of a registered program’s end date. For a full refund, requests must be made at least three days prior to the start of the program; otherwise a prorated refund of up to 75% will be offered. Special consideration may be given for life-altering situations and one-day experiences. If payment method was cash, check or household credit, a refund will be via City check. There will be no cash refunds. If payment method was credit or debit card, a refund will be issued on the card used for payment. This policy does not apply to facility rentals or pass purchases.

NOTICE TO PARTICIPANTS

Participants must recognize that all classes/activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is dedicated to providing safe facilities and equipment for all participants, as well as qualified staff. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first-class recreational activities, facilities and parks. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the City of Kettering to: • Contact the Kettering Fire Department Paramedics to perform first aid and, when necessary, recommend transport of the victim to a hospital; and • Reach the parent/guardian as soon as the situation allows.
