Rosewood presents over 400 classes annually for youth and adults, as well as gallery exhibitions, theatre performances, artist studios and special events. A division of the City of Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, Rosewood is supported and programmed by the City of Kettering, with additional support provided by the Ohio Arts Council. RO S E WO O D G A L L E RY EXHIBITIONS AUGUST 16 – OCTOBER 22 15th Annual HWD Juried Sculpture Exhibition

The 15th annual HWD, a juried exhibition for sculpture artists in Ohio and surrounding states will be on exhibition August 16 through October 22, 2021. HWD (Height x Width x Depth) is the area's only gallery exhibition devoted exclusively to sculpture. The exhibition will be viewable in-person at Rosewood and virtually at www. playkettering.org/rosewood-gallery-home/. This year’s juror, Matt Distel, is the Exhibitions Director for The Carnegie in Covington, KY. Prior to joining The Carnegie, Distel was an Adjunct Curator of Contemporary Art for the Cincinnati Art Museum, Executive Director of Visionaries + Voices and the co-founder and director of Country Club, a commercial gallery based in Cincinnati and Los Angeles. A Cincinnati native, Distel has been organizing exhibitions since 1994 with a particular focus on artists from the region. Distel will select award winners including The Virginia Krause Hess Award for Excellence in Sculptural Art. The People’s Choice Award, made possible through the Joan W. McCoy Art Fund, will be announced at the close of the exhibition.

NOVEMBER 25 – DECEMBER 27 Art Ed: An Art Educator’s Exhibition Art Ed: An Art Educators’ Exhibition began in 2011 to celebrate current or retired art educators in Dayton and the surrounding areas. The exhibition runs from November 25 through December 27, 2021. The public is invited to vote for their favorite artwork for the People’s Choice Award supported by the Joan W. McCoy Memorial Art Fund and Rosewood Arts Centre. Awards will be announced at the end of the exhibition. The exhibition is viewable in person at Rosewood and virtually at www.playkettering. org/rosewood-gallery-home/ and is free and open to the public. This is a pottery class for teens that focuses on developing skills with the potter’s wheel. Beginners learn basic centering and formbuilding. Teen Sewing Night Ages: 12 – 18

Teens have the opportunity to troubleshoot sewing projects with a pro. Tracy McElfresh will be on site to answer sewing questions and help with problem solving. Participants must know the basics of the sewing machine and can work semi-independently. Participants bring their own projects and all necessary materials. YOUTH LANGUAGE Japanese through Creative Drama

Ages: 6 – 11

This course offers an introduction to Japanese language and culture by exploring a well-known Japanese children’s story Momotaro (The Boy Born from a Peach). The students are recommended to purchase a storybook with a CD and encouraged to become familiar with the story outside the class. In the class, the students will participate in dramatic games and activities and create the scenes from the story in Japanese with English support. The students will be introduced to cultural topics, such as “Samurai” and Japanese cooking. As students participate in these and related language and cultural activities, they will develop basic conversational skills, strengthen their vocabulary, learn common phrases, and become familiar with Japanese etiquette. $25 for class textbook due to instructor at first class session. 04-40943-A Fee: Location: Instructor:

YOUTH THEATRE The Masked Actor Ages: 10 – 15

Learn to utilize the non-verbal side of acting. Students explore how gestures and body language can help effectively communicate a character to an audience. Masks, comfortable clothing and gym shoes are required to participate in this socially distanced class.

Coffee and Tea

Hand Built Pottery

In this class students focus on the production of both coffee and tea sets, including coffee pots, coffee mugs, tea pots, and tea cups, as well as serving trays. Students primarily throw on the wheel, with some handbuilding methods used. Surface decoration techniques and proper glazing is covered. Previous wheel throwing experience is necessary for this class.

Enjoy creating interesting functional and non-functional pieces using a variety of clay hand building methods. Various decorative surface techniques will also be explored and incorporated into the projects. Both clay beginners and students of all skill levels are welcome.

Intermediate Wheel Pottery

Raku Firing Event

Class will focus on creating larger pots, refining shapes and challenging students to become better potters. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace while exploring more advanced pottery techniques. Class fee provides each student 25 pounds of clay, glazes and related firings. Clay tool kit required and may be purchased at Rosewood front office. Prerequisite: Students must have completed either Introduction to Wheel Pottery or Wheel Pottery: Beginning and Beyond before taking this class.

Come participate in an exciting alternative firing technique! Bring 2-4 bisqued pieces and use provided glazes to create lustrous finishes and achieve unusual results. Participants will be working around open flame, so wearing long sleeves, natural fiber based clothing and closed-toe shoes is recommended. All pieces must be made using raku clay.

ADULT / TEEN LANGUAGE Conversational Japanese Ages: 13+

This course offers an introduction to Japanese language and culture by exploring Japan’s rich history, society, arts, beliefs, etc. Students are introduced to cultural topics, such as Japanese hospitality known as “Omotenashi”, the art of calligraphy, and even Japanese home cooking. Intro to Italian Culture

This is a beginning class for students with little to no hand building experience. Instruction is given for making tiles, vessels and sculptural forms using clay slabs and coils. Surface enrichment and glaze application is also covered. Students work with their own ideas at their own pace. Class fee provides each student 25 pounds of clay, glazes and related firings.

Students learn about Italian culture to better blend-in while traveling. The focus of this class is cuisine, shopping, dress code, arts, local culture (i.e. sagre and festivals) and how to behave in different scenarios while traveling. Class is taught in English. Handouts are provided.

Reduction Firing Get unique and beautiful glaze results using our reduction kiln and cone 10 specific glazes. Patrons may use up to 3 cubic feet of space per firing included in the cost of class or open studio use. Cost of additional space needed in a single firing is $20 per cubic ft. Firings are scheduled when enough work is generated to fill the kiln (generally once a month). Anyone interested in firing work in the reduction kiln may sign up for an individual orientation in the Rosewood office.

Are you feeling creative and want to take an art class but don’t know where to start? Art for the Extreme Beginner is a crash course in a small sampling of different art media. Try your hand at painting, clay, printmaking and more. A different material will be introduced each week. Absolutely no art experience required! MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS Kelley Booze is a painter from Springfield Ohio. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design and recently completed a Chateau d’Orquevaux International Artist Residency in France. Kelley also teaches art classes at the Springfield Museum of Art. Cynthia Bornhorst-Winslow is a ceramics artist. She also serves as a faculty member and ceramics production assistant at Sinclair Community College.

Annica Damico received her BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design. She has taught art and art therapy classes in health care facilities in the Dayton region.

Nancy Boss is a multitalented and longtime instructor, teaching a variety of youth and adult dance classes. She has been teaching various dance styles for decades, and began teaching at Rosewood Arts Centre in 1985. She has studied dance with Jorg Fastings from the Columbus Ballet Company and at Ballet Arts in New York City.

Alison Fawcett received her BFA in ceramics from Ohio University. She currently teaches at Stivers School for the Arts and Rosewood Arts Centre.

David Brand and Sandra Picciano-Brand are a husband/wife team of Dayton-based jewelry artists. They exhibit at national-level juried art shows and have won numerous first place and best-of-show awards for their jewelry and sculpture.

Brooke Griffin received her BFA in printmaking from Wright State University. She has taught at Stivers School for the Arts and the Springfield Museum of Art and is a tattoo apprentice at Peach Tree Tattoo in Dayton.

Shelly Burden began working with clay at Riverbend Art Center 1989. Her experience includes teaching classes at Greene County Career Center for 16 years. Teresa Connair is a professional actress with credits in stage, television, movies and voiceovers. Since earning her B.F.A. in Acting from Wright State University she has acted in and directed over 150 productions. She is the founder and director of her own theatre company, Undercroft Players in Dayton Ohio, and also teaches acting at the Oakwood Community Center.

Sammie Sue Edmondson has taught both youth and adult dance classes for the City of Kettering for more than 30 years. She studied dance with the New York City Ballet, at Sinclair Community College and with renowned dance instructor, Jorg Fasting, of the Columbus Ballet.

Shannon Fent has been Kettering Children’s Theatre’s director for the since 2007. She has Associate’s degree from Sinclair Community College in Theatre Production.

H. David Kirchner has a degree in art from Cedarville College. He also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. David operates the H. David Studio/Gallery in downtown Dayton. He has worked in clay since 1984. Donna Kuszpa has studied wirewrapping with John Kleber in Columbus. She has taught wirewrapping since 1993 at Riverbend Arts Centre. April Lemaster has been studying ceramics for more than a decade. She has attended numerous workshops and conferences for ceramic techniques around the country. She has exhibited her ceramic work and received awards in the greater Dayton region.


Brandon Lowery holds a BFA from the University of Dayton and an MFA from Miami University in ceramics. Lowery teaches ceramics classes at Xavior University and is currently serving as the Ceramics Studios Coordinator at Rosewood. Tracy McElfresh is the owner of Tracy’s Sewing Studio, a small independent business specializing in clothing alterations, custom creations, clothing replicas, costumes and group lessons for the beginner to the advanced. Since 2004 she has been making custom dresses and teaching the art of sewing. Tracy wrote a monthly fashion column for the Dayton Daily News as well as her own sewing blog, which received the 2018 Best Sewing Bloggers on the planet award. Mary Patterson has worked for more than 40 years as a master goldsmith and artist. She received her BFA specializing in Crafts, from Bowling Green State University. She did graduate work at Wright State University, Miami University and Sinclair. Mary was an instructor at Riverbend for decades, taught classes at Rita Caz Jewelry Studio and continues to teach privately and to lecture on jewelry making across the state. Her goal as an instructor is to give back as much as she has been given by her past teachers and students. Nicoletta Serenata and Giacomo Flora own the company When I Am in Rome, focused on preparing Americans for doing business in Italy. Serenata received her MA in Italian from Ohio State University, and has lectured throughout the United States at universities and businesses. She is a volunteer for the Sons and Daughters of Italy in addition to many other nonprofit organizations.

Hiroko Matsumori Schierman taught Japanese to high school students for more than 20 years and has a background in the performing arts. Nicki Strouss grew up on a horse farm in Lexington, KY and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Columbus College of Art and Design, and is a certified yoga instructor. She has taught at Stivers School for the Arts and was previously the 2020 Artist in Residence at Rosewood Arts Centre. She has an interest in fibers, the outdoors and traveling both to learn and teach. Amanda Wheatley works in both ceramics and textiles. She has studied fine arts with a focus in ceramics at Sinclair Community College. Amanda currently serves as Assistant Facility Coordinator at Rosewood. Leonard Williams is best known for his vibrant watercolor scenes. His paintings have been recognized in numerous juried shows, both locally and nationally, featured in private and corporate collections across the country. His work can be seen in The New Creative Artist by well-known artist/author Nita Leland and he is a featured artist in her newest book Confident Color. In addition, his drawings appear in a series of learning and activity books for children in grades one through five produced by Children’s Historical Publishing.

VISITOR POLICY: All participants and observers must pay open

studio fees to stay longer than 30 minutes. Children under 5 years old are not permitted in open studio. Those under 16 must be supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older (no more than two children per adult). All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, must sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-in-progress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended.

STUDENT POLICY: Adult students currently enrolled in studio classes will receive a student pass card for four sessions of studio time. Students staying over 30 minutes after the end of class must sign in and use this pass card.

Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded or considered a donation to Rosewood.

Rosewood Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel any class and to substitute faculty when necessary. Classes will be canceled three working days prior to the starting date when there is insufficient enrollment.

Artist Studios

Artist studios are available at Rosewood Arts Centre for artists with an active practice and a commitment to sharing their work with the Kettering community. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed as studio spaces become available. Studio spaces start at $85/month for Kettering residents. POTTERY STUDIO: Clay fee of $20 includes 25 pounds of clay

and related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home. You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Attendance at a free pottery studio orientation is required of all first-time participants.

DARKROOM: Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment.

GLASS STUDIO: The glass studio is available to students who wish

to finish class work, have attended a class previously or have prior experience in cold or warm glass. Participants must be at least 16 years old and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Fees for kiln or torch usage are $5 respectively for up to 3 hours.

RESIDENT STATUS

To receive resident rates when attending drop-in and/or daily admission activities or registering for a program, Kettering residents or a person working in Kettering must produce identification. The following sources of I.D. are accepted as proof of residency.

Living in Kettering: • A valid Ohio driver’s license with Kettering address.

• Current utility bill with Kettering address, accompanied by a valid photo I.D.

Working in Kettering:

• Pay stub that includes City of Kettering income tax withholding.

Youth (defined as persons 17 or younger):

• School I.D.s are accepted for youth 17 and under. The Resident Card has been designed to identify resident/non-resident users. The Resident Card will provide quick identification at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts facilities or programs and identify them to be entitled to the Kettering resident fee. The free Resident Card can be obtained at any information desk.

PAYMENT METHODS

The City will accept cash, personal checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) and money orders for the payment of fees. The City can only accept debit cards that can be processed as credit cards (non-pin). The City will charge a $25 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Checks should be made payable to: City of Kettering.

CONFIRMATION

For Mail-in and Drop-off Registrations Once your registration is processed, a confirmation will be emailed to you including your class enrollment status. If we were unable to place you in a class, your payment will be returned to you.

LATE REGISTRATION

Late registrations will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. After the second class meeting, no registrations will be accepted. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee.

REFUND POLICY

Our commitment is to make your experience successful. If you would like a refund, please contact us to discuss your experience. Refund requests must be made within two weeks of a registered program’s end date. For a full refund, requests must be made at least three days prior to the start of the program; otherwise a prorated refund of up to 75% will be offered. Special consideration may be given for life-altering situations and one-day experiences. If payment method was cash, check or household credit, a refund will be via City check. There will be no cash refunds. If payment method was credit or debit card, a refund will be issued on the card used for payment. This policy does not apply to facility rentals or pass purchases.

Participants must recognize that all classes/activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is dedicated to providing safe facilities and equipment for all participants, as well as qualified staff. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first-class recreational activities, facilities and parks. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the City of Kettering to: • Contact the Kettering Fire Department Paramedics to perform first aid and, when necessary, recommend transport of the victim to a hospital; and • Reach the parent/guardian as soon as the situation allows.
