Take a self-guided walk in the park on Thursday, October 19-Sunday, October 22 while reading pages from the children’s book “We All Play”, by Julie Flett. A Storywalk is an innovative and delightful way for children and adults to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Laminated pages from a children’s book will be installed along the path around the pond at Central Park. As you stroll down the trail, you’re directed to the next page in the story. This Storywalk is about ¾ of a mile and stroller friendly.
Animals and kids love to play! This wonderful book celebrates playtime and the connection between children and the natural world. Beautiful illustrations show: birds who chase and chirp, bears who wiggle and wobble, whales who swim and squirt, owls who peek and peep, and a diverse group of kids who love to do the same, shouting “We play too”!

This trip will take us to the Old Log Theatre in Excelsior for a great meal and a great show! We will start with lunch in the Old Log Dining Room, which will include a choice of 1) bone-out short rib with mashed potatoes, green beans and au jus, 2) chicken breast with roasted red potatoes, green beans and a sherry cream sauce, 3) vegetarian pasta made with house marinara and fresh vegetables. All meals include rolls, coffee,
tea, and dessert. After lunch we will move into the theater for a performance of “Million Dollar Quartet”. This Tony Award winning musical captures the memorable day when four Rock ‘n’ Roll greats made music history. On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought together Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley at Sun Records’ storefront studio in Memphis, TN. The man who made it happen was the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, Sam Phillips, who discovered them all. This was the only occasion the four legends-to-be played together, and it has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.

Head north to celebrate the holiday season! After a comfort stop on the way, our first destination will be Blackwoods Restaurant in Duluth for lunch. Locally owned and family-operated since the early 90s, everything on the menu is fresh and made from scratch. You will have a choice of 1) chicken pot pie served with side of cranberry chutney, or 2) homestyle meatloaf served with mashed potatoes. Both options come with fresh baked cornbread, a petite dessert and a beverage. After lunch, we will head to the famed Glensheen Mansion. The small rooms of the estate will be
decorated for the holiday season. Stories of the Congdon family and others who lived and worked at Glensheen bring this magnificent mansion to life. Our final stop will be at Bayfront Festival Park to experience “Bentleyville Tour of Lights.” Walk through the remarkable display with millions of lights, Christmas trees, music and see Santa’s helpers strolling about. Throughout the 20-acre area, there is complimentary hot cocoa, coffee, popcorn, cookies and marshmallows that you can roast over the fires. We will top off the day with a quick stop for a snack (on own) at Tobies in Hinckley.
Are you ready to explore the world again? I know we are!

Background: In partnership with the Rosemount Area Historical Society (RAHS), RAAC is producing a unique theatrical project. The Minnesota Historical Society has designated that a movie called Free Air was the first movie filmed in Minnesota. It was a silent film based on the book of the same title, written by Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize-winning Minnesota author, Sinclair Lewis. The movie was made in 1921 and was partially filmed in Rosemount. It was one of the first films with a strong female character, the first travelogue story showing the country, and one of the first films shot on-site rather than at a studio in Hollywood. As has happened to the vast majority of silent films, the movie and all copies of it have been lost. But the daughter of one of the producers kept a library of still photographs from the production. She connected with the RAHS and donated the collection to them. John Loch has re-created the story for the stage with live-action, photographs projected on a large screen, and accompaniment by live piano music and narration.
Story: The play opens with Claire Boltwood, a young socialite, enjoying dinner with her father, workaholic boyfriend Jeff, and others, at a trendy hotel in New York. When her father’s doctor, another dinner guest, recommends that he needs a vacation and fresh air, Claire decides a cross-country road trip is just the answer, and she’ll drive. Their car is shipped to Minneapolis where their adventures begin. After a flat tire, they meet Milt, the owner of the local garage in “Schoenstrom,” MN. The movie scenes for this small, rural town were filmed in Rosemount. Milt is immediately smitten with Claire and makes the life-changing decision to follow her west in his homemade jalopy. He keeps “accidentally” encountering them en route and comes to their rescue on many occasions. A budding romance begins that culminates in a dramatic scene at a train station in Glacier National Park.

The Splash Pad is located at Central Park at 2875 145th Street West. You will find it is a great way to cool off in the summer’s heat! There is no charge to visit the splash pad and it offers a variety of age appropriate water spray features that will keep kids of all ages smiling while staying cool. There is plenty of shade near the pad under the sun shelter and the indoor restrooms are available at the Central Park shelter.
Tennis courts can be found in Erickson Park at 14115 Brazil Avenue. The City of Rosemount built 4 new courts with the help of a grant from the United States Tennis Association (USTA). The courts are equipped with lights for night time play. Courts can also be found at Bloomfield, Charlies and Claret parks.
Ga Ga Pits are located at Camfield and Greystone Parks. Gaga ball is a game somewhat like dodgeball but played with a foam ball, and in an octagonal court or gaga pit. The game combines dodging, striking, running, and jumping, with the object of being the last person standing. Players hit the ball at each other with their hands and are eliminated if the ball strikes them on or below the knee. The game can be played by a group of individual players or with teams, as well as in one-on-one matches. Give it a try this summer!
Zip lines can be found at Ailesbury and Schwarz Pond Parks.
Hammock Use in City Parks – Hammocks are okay to use in City parks and the City actually encourages people to find a spot to hang out. Often our City parks have mature trees that can be used to attach your “mock” to or you can also use the poles of a small sun shelter or playground to tie up to.
Natural playgrounds help children to develop other beneficial behaviors in addition to physical skills. These behaviors include social skills, cooperation, and the ability to solve problems. In addition, natural playgrounds stimulate a child’s imagination and creativity.
