HONORS AND INDUCTION LUNCHEON

Congratulations

2025 OKU National Chapter of the of the Year

Omicron Kappa Upsilon had its inception with the class of 1914 at Northwestern University Dental School. A committee from a group of students submitted a petition to the faculty of the school and Dean G.V. Black which stated they were “desirous of organizing and funding a national honorary fraternity similar to other honorary fraternities now existing in the leading universities…but which shall consist of dental students exclusively; admission and membership to which shall be based upon scholarship and character as manifested by election by the faculty".

SOTERIA is Greek for conservation and illustrated in the Society's Key by the letter Sigma. ODOUS for teeth as represented by the letter Omicron (O), Kappa (K) being the initial letter of the Greek word for kai- meaning "and". Upsilon (Y) is the Greek letter which under certain conditions indicates the sound of the English letter ‘h" as in the Greek word HYGEIA for health. Using this information, the organizers selected that the name for the new Dental Honor Society be OMICRON KAPPA UPSILON.

A chapter of OKU is found in almost every dental school in the U.S.

The Pi Pi chapter was chartered at Howard University College of Dentistry May 15, 1948. The Charter Members were:

“If you awaken from this illusion and understand that black implies white, self implies other, life implies death or shall I say, death implies life you can conceive of yourself Not conceive, but feel yourself; not as a stranger in the world, not as someone here on sufferance or probation Not as something that has arrived here by fluke, but you can begin to feel your own existence as absolutely fundamental. What you are, basically, deep, deep down, far, far in, is simply the fabric and structure of existence itself ” - Alan Watts

"If I can help somebody, then my living will not be in vain." – Kenneth Dunham

At a young age, my late grandfather, Kenneth, instilled in me the importance of serving others. His words helped shape my perspective and allowed me to realize that my purpose on this Earth is to make a difference in the lives of those who need it the most. I strive to lead a life of service, ensuring that both my actions and my presence uplift those around me.
