Treasurer’s report A look into the future

G’day members. You can observe from the numbers below that the Club is in a financially strong position. As is typical, at this time of the year, the Club has a high level of cash, due mainly to revenue generated from membership dues, and the coming advertising. This balance will dwindle as the expenses of running our Club become due and payable, throughout the year.

Social events and the Sports Series are running almost cash neutral across the year, with the Club’s marquee (no pun intended) events, being Concours and Christmas Party, being subsidised through the Club’s revenue.

Whilst I have provided a snap shot of our bank balance, income and expenses since the last magazine publication, they really have to be taken into context of the full year. I know this type of information can be somewhat dry, and really of interest to very few in the Club. But should anyone wish to discuss any details of the accounts, please do not hesitate to contact me directly, to arrange to do so.

Porsche’s surprise unveiling of the Mission E Cross Turismo at the Geneva International Motor Show generated huge interest from the international media. Whether or not the study will go into production remains undecided. An overview.

In addition to the 911 GT3 RS, Porsche presented the concept study of an electrically powered Cross Utility Vehicle (CUV) at the Geneva International Motor Show. The four-door Mission E Cross Turismo is characterised by its emotional design language and striking offroad elements as well as the new display and operating concept with touch screen and gaze control.

Porsche chief designer Michael Mauer already revealed at the presentation in Geneva that he would like to turn the study into a series production model: “It goes without saying that I would like to see that happen with this vehicle: our team has put its heart and soul into the Cross Turismo over the last two years. Perhaps that means I’m not very objective. What is important now is for us to see how the public responds to the vehicle and then we can draw the right conclusions.”

An initial survey on Twitter shows that the majority of the public agrees with him. Of nearly 13,000 participants, 74 per cent voted for the Cross Turismo to go into production.

HERE WE GO FOR 2018…

History is like looking in the rear vision mirror – it just gives a sense of where you have come from.

Last year was big for PCWA as we had the largest number of members ever, we held the first mass Club travelling event with 37 PCWA members driving their cars around Tasmania and we finished the year with a healthy bank balance thanks to some refinement on how we do social and sporting events.

As our Club continues to grow and evolve, your committee continues to focus on not just creating the “fun and joy” we are all looking for when enjoying our cars and sharing our passion but also building a better Club for our existing and new members.

We have started the year with a full sporting series and some new members joining the field.

It is always so good to have new drivers in the field to add that freshness to each series.

If you have never driven on the track before you simply must. Porsches are built to go on a track and our “gentleman” like racing makes for a safer and wonderful way to start. We can set you up in a slower group to begin with as you get your feet and even give you some

Vice President’s report at a new and improved location through the efforts of Dave Blainey. A Christmas function was held, as well as several race events and weekend drives. A new venue has also been sourced for the monthly meetings, as a change from Seaview, this through the efforts of Kathy and Andy Stack. A slight amendment to the Constitution was agreed on, at the AGM in December 2017, to assure us of our concessional rights.

The committee is constantly reviewing the needs and wants of the members to the extent of reviewing past events and functions, with their attendance, and then trying to improve on things so that members get the most out these functions and events.

It’s been a very busy time for the committee, with the Tasmania tour via Adelaide and Melbourne which had 19 cars and 39 participants, the story of which you will read in this magazine. The Concours event was held

Membership report We are off to a flying start as we ended the 2017 year on a high as we had reached 300 memberships and the lucky 300th member was Porsche Race car driver Josh Hunt. Coincidently, Josh’s wife saw Porsche Club invitations at their local coffee shop and thought it would be a good gift for Josh. Josh has already attended the Porsche club “Come and Try Day” at Wanneroo raceway and was busy jumping from Porsche to Porsche giving tips and hints to owners wanting to drive their Porsches more spiritedly on the track. Josh is a great ambassador for the Club. Welcome Josh and all new members.

MEMBERSHIP PAYMENTS So far this year we have had a good response with over 66% of members paying their fees early and so being able to receive their membership name tags early. [Remember the later you pay, the later you receive your name tags] FEE INCREASE FOR CLUB MEMBERSHIP FOR 2018 News for members for the start of the year but a much needed increase in fees was due because of increased costs for running the Porsche Club in 2017-2018. There were legislation changes, registrations, auditing, software, accounting requirements, social media growth, fewer sponsors, increased catering/drinks costs, increased insurance cost, subscription costs, CPI, etc. which made it necessary to put forward the fee increases.

The fee increase was put to the members at the September meeting in 2017 as we have had NO fee increase for some 5 years i.e. 2012 was the last increase in fees.

It was also noted that PCNSW is $170. Victoria is $200 Queensland is $175 and WA currently is $140.

The committee have a responsibility to the Club to remain operationally financial. So it was proposed to the members that single membership would increase to $140 and family membership would increase to $170.

This was unanimously accepted without any opposition.

Members also proposed [member Ian Rowson] a CPI increase of say up to 5% increase per year at the discretion of the committee e.g. without a members vote. The proposal was again carried unanimously by the members and changes will be drafted into the constitution in due course.

NEW PORSCHE CLUB ROOMS FOR 2018 2018 starts with new club rooms for the Club. Please note the new venue. Unfortunately, our previous venue is no longer a viable option for us to hold regular meetings. So we have moved closer to the beach, sunsets and million dollar views for the members. We will be having German sausage sizzle barbeques during the summer months. This venue has taken some negotiating to secure it for the Club but it will be a fantastic venue with less expensive drinks available from the bar and better facilities. We are looking forward to seeing all members and again IF you are a new member to the club please make yourself known to Kathy and Andy Stack

Secretary’s report

Firstly, I’d like to say a big thankyou to everyone who has assisted our PCWA in functioning as a well-oiled, vibrant and enthusiastic motoring club throughout 2017. It was another year to remember for all the right reasons, be it social, sporting, media, technical or just plain comradery. We received plenty of feedback from members regarding things that were great and things that could be improved. To all those members that we missed over the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holiday period, I truly hope everyone had a great “time out” with family, friends, holidays or just chilling out from a busy year at work and home! We are well into 2018 now and the schedule of unique PCWA events is growing fast.

It’s been a bit of an eye-opener having served for several months on the PCWA committee as secretary, versus just being a silent “member”.

There is nothing more rewarding than participating and contributing to the Club that we as members are all a part of. It’s important for the fresh and positive support to keep flowing up the chain of command to ensure we operate in a way so that all members are getting the bond, confidence and the enthusiasm needed to participate. It’s also been quite a revelation as to how many motoring enthusiasts are out there in Perth and the passion they share with us. It’s really up to all of us to ensure that PCWA remains the benchmark motoring club in WA. One notable talking point all year has been the classic car market – it seems to have gone a bit crazy over the past few years and we all have our stories to tell (mostly using the words “in hindsight”). This passion seems quite infectious, as even my wife Andrea (who has historically had absolutely zero interest in

anything automotive) is starting to join the fold of classic car appreciation. Even at a recent “Classic Cars and Coffee” event, there were well over 500 different vehicles on display and Andrea fell in love with many of these beautiful cars!! i.e. Cadillacs, Renaults, Chevrolets etc – so there is still some work required in guiding our people to the correct manufacturer – i.e.

Porsche!! (P.S. she does love our 914, much more than me).

Another observation that I thought worthy of mention is the number of members who have “project” cars at home. The PCWA has been instrumental in getting these projects to completion. How? It seems all we have to do is post a suitable event on the PCWA Website and the “date” is used as a project completion milestone. For example, I know of a few members who had their cars readied/rebuilt purely so they could participate in the “Tour of Tasmania” event last September, others for Targa South West and even myself (under strict instruction from wife Andrea) who maintained that our bright yellow Porsche 914 that had been “in a thousand pieces” for the past several years would have to be road ready and driven to Concours 2017. It happened, we did it!!! - and we were absolutely thrilled. We took pride of place on the very, very outer perimeter corner of the Concours, under parking direction from some of the more “purist” Porsche 911 owners, (one even suggested parking it over the road – very funny…) but nonetheless, we made it and the car attracted plenty of interest (young and old)! Did anyone take a picture of this car at Perry Lakes? I’d love to get a copy, as I was too busy manning the incredibly popular “members bar” that seemed even more populated that great day!

We’d all love to have 2018 remembered as yet another great year, with even more member enthusiasm and hands on participation. I’m looking forward to catching up with you all throughout the year ahead.

Sporting Director’s report The 2017 Sport Series was completed on 12 November 2017 at Collie. A special thanks to all the officials who volunteered their time in 2017 to organise and run the sporting series. Thanks also to those that took photos at the events – without them our Porsche West magazine would be a lot duller.

A review of the Sport Series Rules was carried out in late 2017/early 2018. A number of proposed changes were put forward. A survey was sent out to all PCWA members to vote on whether the changes should be implemented or not. Results from this survey confirmed that the majority of members who voted agree with the changes. See the new 2018 Rules and the changes from previous Rules on the PCWA website.

Porsche 911 Carrera T Porsche is reviving the totally pure concept behind the heralded 911 T of 1968 with the new 911 Carrera T. In Porsche parlance the ‘T’ stands for Touring and in this case it is mostly about less weight, a manual gearbox with shorter ratios, rear wheel drive and a mechanical differential lock for enhanced performance as well as more intense driving fun.

The unique appearance of the new generation 911 Carrera T is based on the 911 Carrera and has extra features as standard, including: PASM chassis now with a 20 mm lower ride height, optimised Sport Chrono Package, a shortened shift throw with red shift pattern and Sport-Tex seat centres.

All new aspects of the 911 Carrera T are designed to optimise sportiness and reduce weight: The rear window and rear side windows are made from lightweight glass and the door trims feature opening pull loops instead of handles. Noise suppression materials are largely reduced, rear seats have been removed and deleting the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) is also possible. The result: At an unladen weight of 1,425 kilograms 911 Carrera T is 20 kgs lighter than a 911 Carrera with comparable equipment.

The three-litre, six-cylinder flat engine with twin turbocharging generates 272 kW of power and 450 Nm of torque, the latter delivered at a constant peak between 1,750 rpm and 5,000 rpm. Thanks to the

manual transmission with shorter gear ratios and mechanical differential lock, the 911 Carrera T sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds – 0.1 seconds faster than the 911 Carrera Coupe – on its way to 200 km/h in just 15.1 seconds. Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) is available as an option and brings the 100 km/h sprint in 4.2 seconds, and 200 km/h in 14.5 seconds. Both transmission variants allow a 290 km/h top speed.

Exterior colour choices are Black, Lava Orange, Guards Red, Racing Yellow, White and Miami Blue, as well as metallic colours Carrara White, Jet Black and GT Silver.

2017 Porsche Centre Perth PCWA Concours d’Elegance 2017 was a first for our flagship event, the Porsche Centre Perth PCWA Concours d’Elegance. It was held at the Perry Lakes Reserve Areas 5 and 6 off Underwood Avenue (near corner of Perry Lakes Drive). The Committee – mainly David Blainey – tried all year to find a suitable location for the event.

The South Perth foreshore has been such a success, it was hard to imagine the Concours being held anywhere else.

After considering alternative locations – including a different, less desirable spot on the South Perth foreshore and an open area at Elizabeth Quay in the city, the Perry Lakes Reserve was chosen as the best option. I can’t remember how excited (or not) the Committee was about the new location. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

The trees made for some well needed shade.

The gentle slope gave visitors a unique view of the cars. Especially, when it was decided (by some brave Committee members who got up at the crack of dawn to set up the tent) to locate the tent at the lowest point so that

members could not only enjoy a delicious lunch under the trees but also have a unique view of all the cars.

The day went so well, that the Committee is looking at returning to Perry Lakes Reserve this year.

We hope to see even more visitors (both members and non-members) – and hopefully more cars entered into the Concours in 2018.

There’s nothing like a bit of competition.

Of course, our flagship event could not have been so successful without the support, help and attendance of many.

On behalf of the Club, its members and everyone who attended, I’d like to thank the Porsche Centre Perth for their support of the Concours d’Elegance year after year and always bringing a few of their latest cars to gawk over.

A special thanks goes to this year’s Concours judges Andy Stack, Richard James and Graham Evans.

I would also like to thank all the members who attended another fantastic Porsche Centre Perth Concours d’Elegance. It’s your attendance and your cars that make all the difference. Without you all, there would be no Club. Thanks again for being the heart and soul of the Porsche Club of WA. Thank you to the Committee members who got out of bed early to help setup well before the cars and members started driving in – and those who helped pack up at the end of the day.

2017 Porsche Centre Perth PCWA Concours d’Elegance – Winners Circle

The weather gods were with us once again this year and the new location at Perry Lakes proved that this will be a popular site for future events.

Whilst most members were having a nice breakfast, a few committee members and volunteers were hastily assembling marquees and setting up the large volume of tables, chairs and drinks for this year’s event.

• Full Concours Best of Show - Andrew Raffaele’s lapis blue 2003 996 turbo (126 points out of 130 points) Followed by:

• First place Air-Cooled - John Webb’s 1964 356 SC (110 points) • First place Water-Cooled - Dean Pike’s 1982 944 (104 points)

Special thanks to committee member David Blainey for the huge amount of logistics he put into making this a great day for the members and special thanks to judges Richard James and Graham Evans who flies in from his home in Queensland just for this event.

These talented judges have been doing this for decades now and are experts when it comes to judging these cars.

This year’s winning Porsche was Andrew Raffaele’s 2003 Lapis blue 996 turbo.

We were also lucky enough to see the beautiful replica Porsche 917 long tail grace us with its presence.

It is a long drive down from Geraldton with a trailer for the event but with the number of members looking at the race car it was worth it.

CONCOURS RESULTS Although the number of competing Concoursentered cars were down this year, the quality of care and preparation put into the event by members is truly impressive.

This special car is a true deserved winner.

When I caught up with Andrew after the event for a debrief I was stunned to hear about the work and preparation that he had put into preparing the car for the event.

With over three solid months’ work [+450 hours], Andrew transformed this car into a truly magical piece of engineering.

He removed the entire engine and drive train including the transmission and front and rear suspensions, braking systems and steering and proceeded to dismantle these components and had every piece of dirt and grime removed. He then meticulously reassembled everything back into the car again.

All of this work of removing engine and suspensions was done not in a workshop BUT

with jacks and blocks of wood and in a carport at Andrew’s home.

I know there is no way I would have taken on this challenge and Andrew could not have picked a tougher environment.

And to top all this off, Andrew has then decided to take his Porsche on the drive to Tasmania with the Porsche club.

If only Andrew knew of the extensive roadworks and gravel roads he would encounter he possibly would have changed his mind about taking this car. Andrew said at one stage he had encountered freshly sprayed tar with a coating of blue metal being applied to the road and with no way of avoiding this, the pitter and patter of sticky stones adhering to the underside of the car meant more work when it arrived back in Perth.

Upon returning the Porsche to Perth he then only had two and a bit weeks to remove all the under panels and wheel arch linings and clean off all the stray bitumen and gravel that had stuck to the underside of the car. And carry out final preparations for Concours.

This is why, Andrew was a much-deserved winner of this prize.

We urge all Porsche owners to think about preparing their Porsche for Concours. You may think you don’t have a hope in winning but sometimes the judging is extremely close and it can sometimes be just the category that the car is entered into that makes the difference.

PCWA Christmas Party & Awards Night 2017 The annual Porsche Club Christmas Party and Awards Night 2017 was held at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club on 2 December 2017.

Set right on the shore at Peppermint Grove, guests arrived for drinks and canapes at the Athol Hobbs Room, welcomed by panoramic views of the Swan River at sunset. It was a wonderful place to spend the evening, revel in motoring-related tales and savour the company of great friends and guests.

The Awards Night is always a great opportunity in the year where members and guests get together to celebrate the festive season in style while also taking the time to recognise and award members who have poured their hearts and souls into the Club’s Sporting Series during the year. Additionally, it is perhaps the perfect time for members

who race to publicly acknowledge and thank their partners for their support and patience throughout the year!

As guests turned up dressed in their festive best, Steve Silk the Magician kick-started the evening’s program with his illusions and quirky sense of humour.

The feature entertainment act of the evening was Divalicious - delightful soprano duos Penny Smith and Fiona Smyth. Guests may know them from their various performances on national television and also at prolific events such as the Hopman Cup and the Ashes. With true Divalicious panache and style, Penny and Fiona entertained with their beautiful voices but also kept guests laughing away with their fantastic comic timing.

As for the Awards, PCWA members Tim Wolfe, David Blainey, Dean Pike, Daniel Bathe, Sam Wolfe, Gary Cutler and Peter Ogden took home the top awards in their respective race classes.

Cath Foster won the Women’s Plate Award.

Racing spirits must have been high in the Foster household last year, as Jeff Foster won the Rookie Award of the year. Dean Pike won the Club Champion Award while the Outright Champion of 2017 was awarded to Tim Wolfe.

There was lots of time for dancing and decadent desserts thereafter to round off the evening’s festivities. As always, a big thank you for all your support and positive feedback for the event. Thanks also to all the PCWA Committee members who helped in putting the event together and the lovely cheer that went with the effort!

2017 PCWA AGM Another big thank-you to Porsche Centre Perth (PCP) for allowing the Porsche Club to utilise their premises for the PCWA 2017 AGM and Members’ Meeting. This was our end of year meeting and as usual a great turn out of members attended for the meeting and election of new committee members.

With 65 members registering and almost 85 turning up for the night we knew we were in for a fantastic night. Food was supplied for the meeting by specialist gourmet provider the Black Truffle from North Fremantle. Thank you Black Truffle.

This year we achieved our 300th membership and were honoured that our 300th membership just happened to be the membership of Josh Hunt. As fate would have it, Josh’s wife was visiting the Black Truffle where she found a Porsche Club magazine and a pile of the “come and join the club” membership forms on the counter.

If you were lucky to come along to the “come and try day” in January at Wanneroo Raceway, Josh, who coincidently happens to be a Porsche Carrera Cup racing driver, spent much of his time jumping from Porsche to Porsche and giving vital driving tips to many of the club

members attending on the day. Thank you Josh - you have become a true ambassador to the club.

During the AGM proceedings, committee members were presented with an official Porsche Community Management (Germany) boxed trophy for volunteering to be part of the PCWA committee through 2017. Deryck presented the awards to the PCWA committee members. All committee members then relinquished their current positions and nominations were called for new committee members for 2018.

Now we have stepped into 2018 head first and with more and more of the girls joining up and participating in the driving and racing events it can only get better. It will be more competitive and we encourage more of the girls to come and join in the fun as we know that the girls have the ability to look, listen, learn and become better drivers than the boys.

Air Cooled Porsche Run Thank you for all of the participants who ventured out on our first air cooled run. Our initial plan was to meet at the Caltex in Byford and ultimately end up at the Serpentine Airfield for their annual light aeroplane extravaganza.

However, on the day, the weather was so abysmal, the first casualty was the air show.

Not to be deterred however, 8 cars & 16 enthusiasts arrived at Byford, coffee for the participants and petrol for the German

machines, and off through the Wongong Regional Park to Jarrahdale’s renowned General Store for extra coffees and treats.

Leaving Jarrahdale we were distracted by a Police Radar patrol who were enthusiastically waving (whilst pointing the radar), causing us to miss the planned turnoff and add extra unplanned kilometres to our drive.

We then proceeded to the Bodhinyana Buddhist Monastery, set in pristine gardens, continuing

on to Karnet Nature Reserve, before heading to Chez Deux Amis Restaurant in Karnup Road, Serpentine.

Food and service at Chez was delightful and home we headed, in the rain.

In spite of the challenging conditions we did manage to enjoy a spirited drive through some of the loveliest winding roads in the foothills of Perth and Serpentine.

The Inaugural PCWA Amazing Race

Well, they are racing for a Million dollars…. Monique hustles at AQWA for the next clue “Welcome to the Inaugural PCWA Amazing Race and thank you for entering. You are all now in a race for a Million dollars…..”

This is how the teams were introduced to the Amazing Race social run. After going through some of the rules, members were given their race packs containing a welcome letter and instructions, their first coloured clue envelope and the “Mercy Rule” green envelope.

To avoid a conga line of Porsches driving across the city and to stop teams simply following each other, the clue envelopes were split into three colours, namely yellow, red and blue. This effectively “shuffled” the first three locations and put teams on one of three different courses to the final pitstop for lunch and potential glory.

They were allowed to open their first clue and get on their way – the race was on. It was a nervous organiser initially though, as everyone sat in their cars deciphering their first clue and not moving!! Gradually, one by one they headed off, as we in turn, made our way straight to the final Pit Stop location to wait for the winners to turn up. Who would we see first?

Correctly deciphered, it would lead members to the DNA Tower in Kings Park (shown opposite with Alba descending), where they found fellow club member Drew at the top, waiting to give them their next clue. Despite a three minute stop for anyone who wasn’t comfortable climbing to the top, all the members climbed the tower and received their next clue.

One member stated that she had “never done anything like that in her life”, so I tip my hat to you for seizing the moment.

Park, the teams received Clue Four – “Where Stuttgart & Maranello meet every year with no fireworks”. Apologies to those teams that hadn’t been on the Club’s combined Australia Day run with the Ferrari Club, and were not aware of the meeting place in Karrinyup.

Despite this though, all teams worked it out, some by looking at previous Club magazines on the Club website! Smart thinking…

By now, the teams were out of the central city and making their way towards the Swan Valley, although they were still unaware of the final pitstop. All except one team that is, who resorted to opening the green “Mercy Rule” envelope and receiving the location and directions to the final Pit Stop.

The other teams were finding the “Largest Fish Tank in Perth” to receive their next clue.

The next clue envelope sent teams to the last location before the final Pit Stop - Yagan Memorial Park in the Swan Valley. This was chosen as it was only a short drive from the Final Pit Stop location. However, two teams headed to Yagan Park in Rossmoyne and ran themselves out of the race. They made it back to the Valley in time for lunch. As they say, there is always next year…

The final Pit Stop location for lunch was The Mallard Duck in the Swan Valley, so the clue locations were designed to ensure members were heading from the start in Burswood towards the restaurant. A three-course lunch awaited them, with sharing platters on the table, followed by a main course choice of steak, chicken or fish and a dessert (or two for some!) to finish. The staff were friendly and efficient at The Mallard Duck and Alain and his team were great to deal with from day one.

It is a great location and we had the grassed parking area and the marquee to ourselves.

The first Million dollar prize was for the team that was “First Past the Post” and arrived at

the final Pit Stop first. This was Allan & Alba in their 997 GT3, pipping Gary & Mo in their 964 Carrera 2. Finishing on the podium in a credible third was Team Rukshen in their 50 Year Anniversary 911. Well done to all of you.

All teams that completed the race were eligible for the second Million dollar prize and the winner was drawn out of a hat. The winner of this prize was Jurg & Leon in their early 911. Congratulations to them both and to all the teams that solved the clues and completed the race. I hope you all had a great time.

Finally, the Amazing Race cannot be run without a lot of helpers. A very big Thank You to all those who manned a location and provided photos, including Mum and Dad Clarke, Colin & Cherie, Drew & Maree, Chloe, Jayden, Seamus & Cheryl and of course my long suffering wife Lorraine.

In mid-October 2017, 19 Porsche cars of various types, models and ages with 37 participants embarked on a touring trip via South Australia, Melbourne and Tasmania. It was epic, excellent accommodation prebooked, with laughter, good food and wine, camaraderie, beautiful routes very well mapped out, extraordinary scenery and support for one another.

It all started in Adelaide where the cars had been delivered by trucks and train. Everyone convened at the Novotel in Rowland Flat, approximately one hour north of Adelaide where we socialised and got to know one another. Trips were organised and a visit made to the Whispering Wall where on one side you could whisper and on the other side of this concave reservoir wall putting your ear to the wall you could hear the voice of the whisperer.

During a long and exquisite lunch, members of the Porsche Club South Australia joined with us for a brief get together.

Following on from the Barossa, we travelled to Penola for a one-night stop, the route chosen was scenic and had little traffic apart from 19 Porsches out to enjoy themselves. Then on to the Great Ocean Road via Mount Gambier, with magnificent scenery of the Bay of Islands, Port Campbell and the 12 Apostles (which we were advised are no longer the 12 Apostles). The weather was so kind to us and made the visit, scenery and visibility all the more magnificent.

From there we had lunch on the beachside at a beautiful coastal town of Lorne then on to Warrnambool for a night’s stay. Melbourne was our next port of call and all arrived safely with some opting to take their own routes.

The hotel was exquisite, parking had been arranged for the cars and they were expecting us and so arriving was easy.

The next day we were on our way to Tasmania via the “Spirit of Tasmania” ferry. We all met at the ferry terminal in good order and timing to be surrounded by 400 Rebel bikies of Australia, yes 400 Rebel bikies. They were on their way to celebrate the founding of the Tasmanian chapter of the Rebels Australia.

When we finally got on board, parked up and found our beds for the night we were all looking forward to food and a little drink.

Noticeably we were all surrounded by Rebel bikies but it has to be said, as it was elsewhere in Tasmania, they were a polite nice bunch of guys?????

At 5.00am we were woken by the loud speaker noting that we would be disembarking at 5.45am. So, we made our way down to the cars then to see the 400 bikies, with full leather regalia, assemble themselves and their bikes. One of the Rebels came over and wished us good morning, as they do politely, and let us know, looking at our beautiful cars, that a reception must have been arranged specially for us when we disembarked, by the police. There was laughter and a few nods and we went on our way to see the bikies all pulled over for licence, rego, RBT and drug tests. We were not stopped at all.

On we went in convoy arriving safely at the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm for a well needed breakfast and coffee. We caught our breath and were on our way to Launceston arriving at the Country Club Villas. Dinner was

had at the casino restaurant. The next day a tour of the Boags brewery had been arranged which was well attended and enjoyed.

collectively or in discreet packs who had to test the ability of their cars in these trying conditions. We won’t mention names.

The next stop was Hobart at the Lenna hotel but on the way, we visited the “Devils Corner” for the great views. Some went further on to Wineglass Bay where there were more stunning views but before this, one could join Andy for a visit to Zep’s Café 11km outside Campbell Town for some famous pies. We took Andy’s word for that. Leena hotel was a good hotel choice in the heart of Hobart with character and views of the water, harbour and mountains. It was certainly colder in Hobart and we were grateful for our Porsche WA woollen jackets.

Finally, we were on our way back to Davenport and Melbourne. On the way to Davenport some stopped for coffee at Sheffield, where there was another gang of bikies but these were more casual with trendy bikes and gear and some with no leathers. On to Davenport and the compulsory car wash although it must be said that earlier whist at Cradle Mountain and with Davenport being only say 1.5 hours away one of our team had decided to make the journey to keep his car clean – what dedication. We found a bar in Davenport to pass the time before our departure.

Whilst in Hobart we wined and dined together and there were opportunities to go off and do one’s own thing. Some went on an organised boat trip to the Mona Art Museum with drinks and canapes provided, which was apparently wonderful. Others drove up to the top of Wellington Mountain to experience the view and some went up in the dark to try and see the Southern Lights (the Southern Aurora Borealis). During our stay in Hobart, again in convoy, we joined with the Porsche Club of Tasmania for a lunch at Pooley Wines Pty Ltd near Richmond for a wonderful meal and wine tasting. Before this we pulled up at Richmond to see its beautiful Georgian Village with coffee shops, picturesque bridges and river.

From Pooley Wines some went in different directions, others visited the Port Arthur region and enjoyed more views and good driving roads.

We all collected and were on the ferry but without the Rebels. We sang a few songs had dinner and drinks and tucked up for the night. The Grand Hyatt Melbourne welcomed us again with service and luxury. Over the next couple of days, we dined together, drank together and some participated in a drive with Porsche Melbourne and/or visited speciality car showrooms. Of course, there were others who wanted to go shopping!

Our stay at Hobart had come to an end and we were now on our way to Cradle Mountain via Queenstown, Strahan and Tullah. It was a journey of approximately 450 km but the scenery was fantastic and the roads perfect for Porsches, although at times we had road improvements to contend with which slowed the convoy right down contrary to our needs and wants. Along the way we visited Russell Falls and “The Wall” a magnificent piece of continuous carved wooden art between 25 and 30 metres long and some 2-3 metres high. We crossed the Derwent Bridge and pulled up at Queenstown for lunch.

Some drove on to picturesque Strahan through Tullah to Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village where we stayed for one night where once again the accommodation, reception and food was excellent. It was also an opportunity for some of us to wash our cars back to their pristine looks.

The next day after breakfast we were just off up the road to the Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge, again stunning, with good food, wine and company. From here we embarked on a bus tour from the Visitor Centre to Cradle Mountain where there were many different walking trails and as usual views. The weather was kind to us with blue skies and vivid colours in the countryside. Some elected to walk around the lake and a brave threesome decided the next day to go for the summit, alas the summit had ice and so could not be enjoyed but they were within a whisker of the top - what an effort. They were applauded.

During our stay at Cradle Mountain there were opportunities to rest or visit the countryside

On the final night we caught up on a competition where, in the Barossa, at the start, we were asked to set our odometers to zero so that at the end of the trip we could find who had travelled the farthest. It was 4,400km by none other than the Green 911 who had in fact driven to Davenport for the car wash.

In summary it was wonderful, the scenery was magnificent, the tour route excellent, the ferry crossing memorable, accommodation hospitable and comfortable. The roads in Tasmania, it was agreed, were made for Porsches, winding roads with hills, dips and turns and the scenery superlative.

When asked who would return all 37 hands went up. Some put both hands up. We look forward to the next trip.

We couldn’t have had a more gorgeous day weather-wise for that morning – sunny and dry; and with a pleasant diurnal temperature in the mid-20s. As with many of the previous runs, both the PCWA and FCA club members were scheduled to meet in the Midland Car Park for the usual pre-run briefing at 0945 for a 1030 departure.

A few of the Porsche guys were already there when Tony and I arrived [in a Mazda 6 station wagon!] about 0900; and the rest of the participants started to filter in soon after. There was the usual socializing (of course) before the Presidents of both Clubs – Frank Ferrari (FCA) and Deryck Graham (PCWA) – handed out the briefing prior to departure. Meanwhile, yours truly left a few minutes earlier to re-check the route for any last-minute diversions. (I’m glad to say that there weren’t any!)

The route was planned in two parts: the first involved skills in handling the car on twisty country back roads, followed by a “pit-stop”; while the second part was billed as the fastest part of course to the eatery.

The first part of the course took the drivers from Campersic Road and along an inclined route through the hills, negotiating several small chicanes and followed by the thrilling “roller coaster” to O’Brien Road. More twisty sections now awaited our drivers as they passed the Peter Brock Memorial further on before entering [the less-twisty] Berry Road back on to Toodyay Road.

But this was soon short-lived; for, on the other side of Bindoon, our intrepid drivers soon went back for more twisty country sections (Chittering Road) and on to Stringybark Winery and Restaurant where a delicious lunch awaited us. There were about 80 people who came along for the run; but only 66 actually stopped for lunch – the others, sadly, had to leave because of prior arrangements.

Just outside Toodyay, the route took our drivers through another section of back road, bypassing the town to the car park where a welcoming pit stop awaited them for a chance to stretch their legs and grab a quick drink!

On arrival at the restaurant, of course, just about everyone had worked up a healthy appetite and the quality of the food didn’t disappoint! Stringybark did a fantastic job and lunch was dished out with very little time in between courses. Both the FCA and PCWA took over the entire restaurant that afternoon!

15-20 minutes later, our intrepid participants were on their way again, to the quickest part of the course, by first travelling along the Bindi-Bindi Road towards Bolgart for a relatively short distance. A left turn and over a level crossing into Dewars Pool Road marked the start of the fast and almost deserted open road for almost 34 kms before doubling back to Bindoon and the slowest section of the course.

And that brought a very exciting morning’s drive to a welcomed conclusion.

Sports Series Round 8 – Collie Motorplex 12th November 2017

Round 8, the final round of the 2017 Sports Series was a daytime Super Sprint on Sunday 12 November at the Collie Motorplex. The event was organised and run by the HSV Owner’s Club of WA with the Porsche Club and Triumph Sports Owners Association invited to attend to make up numbers.

Sunday was a warm 34 degree day with blue skies. A violent rain storm fell over the track overnight. However, the track dried out prior to commencing the event.

Of the 53 cars that entered the event, there were 19 PCWA members with the remainder of the field varied and ranging from Triumphs, WRX’s to HSV and FPV vehicles. Ron Norder and Gary Cutler both drove up from Albany for the event.

The Women’s Plate was still being hotly contested with Cath Foster, Robin Garbutt and Dallas Copley all competing.

The event ran smoothly thanks to the HSV Club. Fastest car on the day was Blaise Paris in his 911 964 RSR Replica followed by Tim Wolfe in his GT3.

The first track day for 2018 was a PCWA and CAMS subsidised Come ‘N Try twilight event at Barbagallo Raceway on 27 January 2018. The event is not timed, there are no awards or prizes given and no results published.

During your breaks there’s people to chat to, food, drink or a chance to just watch the action. A few minutes might not seem like a long time out on track, but it is!

The Come ‘N Try days are put on to try and encourage Porsche owners to participate in the PCWA Sporting Series. The PCWA Sporting Series includes 8 events during the year. Details are on the PCWA website.

Thanks to the officials: Brett Read (Clerk of Course), David Blainey (Steward - under assessment by Bill Richards) and Colin Strickland (Scrutineer).

The evening was balmy with a cool wind blowing up after sunset. There were 27 entrants driving 23 Porsches, a Subaru WRX and a Holden HSV. Eight of the starters were new to driving a Porsche at speed around a track. CAMS one-day licences were arranged for the newcomers.

Special thanks to Josh Hunt who gave up his evening to give the new drivers a briefing and one-on-one driver training to anyone who asked for assistance. Josh stated as part of his briefing that for those who haven’t driven on the track before that their lives will be changed once they have experienced the thrill. The grins on the newbies faces at the end of the event confirmed this.

The format of the event is essentially the same as the Sport Series events.

Every driver is sorted into between four or six “run groups” based on the driver’s ability and car, so you’re out on track with similarlyfast vehicles. The fastest car in each group goes out first with the slowest at the rear. The cars go out with about 100-200 metres between each car. Each group goes out in turn, for around eight to

Round 1 of the 2018 Sports Series was a twilight super sprint on Friday 2 February 2018 on the long track at Barbagallo Raceway, Neerabup. The event was organised and run by the Holden Special Vehicle Owners Club of WA (HSVOCWA) with PCWA being invited to attend to make up numbers.

Of the 41 cars that entered the event, 19 were Porsches and the remaining cars HSVOCWA and Associates cars. The weather was warm and dry. The event ran smoothly thanks to the HSVOCWA volunteers.

Fastest car on the day was Barry Baltinas in his GT3RS, David Watkin (PCWA member) in his Nissan GTR R35 was 2nd quickest and Gary Jacobs 3rd in his Cayman GT4.

My First Porsche - 911SC 1982

Many late nights to get it to look like this Beware! Owning Porsches can be very addictive!!

so we arranged to meet up at his house.

It started many years ago in the early 90s, having had a succession of Austins including a Cooper S, Rover P5 3 Ltr and SD1 3.5 Ltr SE, several Fords, BMWs including a 525E and a 6 series. Over the years I always (since the late 70s) hankered for a 911. Don’t ask my why, I fell in love with the shape and vowed to get one eventually!

Someone once said to me that if you want it bad enough and you sacrifice then you can have whatever you want. With that being the case, eventually I had enough money put together (by including the sale of my 6 series BMW) to look for a modest car. How difficult could that be? I had joined the Porsche Club GB a year earlier and there were, before the days of eBay and on line car sales, plenty of adverts in the Porsche Club magazine to look through for 911’s. So the search began.

My budget was around £10K UKP (approx.

A$30K) and for that price one could get a not so perfect 911SC which is what I ended up looking for. I am a mechanical engineer by trade so I had bought and sold many cars over the years and rebuilt/restored some of them as well, so I knew my way round a car and what to look for. The question of looking at 911s was not my forte so I got in touch with the then technical director at the Porsche Club GB for advice. He returned my call but suggested it was easier if there was a car available to go round and point out the necessary checks and pitfalls. He lived in Bristol some 150 miles away from me but being a Southern UK sales manager I could be anywhere any day and he had his own Porsche Garage business at his house 48

I arrived at his house to find a number of 911s on the driveway and he had a fully equipped garage on the side of his house and we spent a few hours walking round various cars discussing what I needed to look for when buying a 911. Well worth the trip.

So the hunt began, not as easy as I thought, looking at some 85 cars over a period of some months with a lot of bad cars cited as pristine condition, and some good cars but out of my reach financially. A new mag came out, I rang a seller and there was a reply but sorry the car has been sold but leave your name and number, you never know. Disappointed the search went on finding nothing worth the risk but after 3 weeks a phone call changed my life forever as the guy rang me back and asked if I was still interested in his car as I was the next on the list (there were several after me).

I said I could not get there until the weekend but he said that was OK so long as I turned up. The weekend arrived and off I set pulling up outside his house to be met by an MGB in bits in his garage with the 911 next to it.

He was restoring the MGB which explained why it was in bits and wanted to sell the 911SC so he could buy a dismantled 964. Why dismantled you may ask? Well it transpires the Andy was a Detective Constable in the car theft division of the Chelmsford Police and had negotiated a deal to buy the car from the police which had been stolen some time ago. One piece leading to another until they had all the parts of the car in a container at the pound and it could be put back together.

The 911 was jacked up for me to inspect and he left me to it. After an hour he came over slid under the car with me

and explained the clutch had just been replaced, the front seats had been redone in leather, 7” and 6” X 16” diameter Fuchs alloys were added and a whale tail.

I changed the Fuchs to 8” & 7” later, plus a 3.2 Carrera front lower panel.

The car generally was in good condition with service history although there was a very small amount of bubbling on the front wings below the headlights and some other minor marks and dimples but appeared to be an honest car so a test drive ensued with Andy driving as I had no insurance. We were on the ring road doing some 100mph when a roundabout came up quickly but it stopped well, oil pressure was 4 bar and all seemed good! The car had to be mine. It was not perfect but as we say had good bones to start with. So after an hour of negotiating I had a car at £10,150 with MOT and a service being done plus delivery to my house. The car arrived a week later looking clean and tidy. A Pacific Blue 1982 204BHP 911SC it had taken every penny I had but I had got it!

However, I had a massive surprise when I went to insure it as they said the car did not exist at all and was probably stolen!!! A call to Andy uncovered the reason. As he worked undercover for the stolen vehicle recovery squad all their personal cars were taken off the UK register so no threats could be made against them or family. Therefore I could not drive it for 24hrs, after which the car magically appeared back on the DOT register and I could get insurance.

I spent many hours cleaning the car underneath, inside and outside and for 6 months enjoyed it with the regions in the Club including attending the Club’s main

and, at last, I won! I had probably spent over another £10KP on it, the labour being free.

That autumn it came off the road from October to April so that I could work on it as the sight of the very good cars started my Concours efforts. Firstly, I got the front wings repaired (plated) and managed to get a reasonable

respray done to hide the rest of the faults for £1050! (A$2,500). It made the car look better and I attended my first Regional Concours with the car looking as good as I could get it, with a mention but nothing else as reward. I had my score sheet and Tony went through it with me suggesting for little cost I could move up so the journey began.

After over 10 years the car was restored, the gearbox rebuilt, proper respray detailing and much midnight oil spent and money, and I was on first name terms at my local Porsche Dealership so got some good discounts. Over this period, I entered our Regional Concours getting best new entrant and 4th, 3rd, 2nd,

Concours event at Thruxston Race track. I met Tony (Bunn to his friends, - don’t ask) at his and my first Club night and he actually lived only 4 miles from me and we struck up an instant friendship will still lasts today.

He has a 1974 911 Carrera Targa with the 2.7 RS engine all of which he spent 13 years restoring to original condition himself. It was Tony who set me on the road to Concours.

Famous 4 Cam

550 Spyder. Arguably the most iconic sports car Porsche ever made was powered by a type 547 motor.

The historical racing success of Porsche can be pinpointed back to one event. The design, development, production, and evolution of the Fuhrmann motor. It was an air cooled, four cylinder, twin plug motor with four bevel gear driven overhead camshafts. The motor is known by many names, but all refer to the same piece of engineering masterpiece that created the brand’s reputation as a giant killer.

It was, and still is known as the Fuhrmann motor, the 4 cam, the Spyder motor, Carrera motor, and in house at Porsche the Drawer Motor. This final name, due to the design being kept from prying eyes in the office, during its design, it was kept in a drawer, and able to be closed when required.

The motor was seen as necessary if Porsche were to be serious about winning international level races. The company had some taste of success in various classes, with the pushrod motor, but felt there was a market for weekend racers, willing to invest in competitive factory built race cars. They also believed that developing a reputation for being able to supply reliable, consistently fast cars, would be great for their reputation as a credible car maker, in what was fast becoming a crowded market segment.

The task to design this new motor was placed 50

with Ernst Fuhrmann, in 1952. Fuhrmann had been with Porsche as an engineer since 1947, initially as a camshaft expert. One can only speculate on the level of trust, both financial, and reputational, the Porsche family was placing in him. The motor went from design to prototype remarkably quick, in the days before computer fluid dynamics, and 3D printers, at only six months from drawings to start up on the dyno, on 2nd April 1953.

Fuhrmann was born in Vienna in 1918, and graduated from Vienna Technical University with a thesis on the subject of “Cam drive for the control of high speed combustion motors”. If this alone did not qualify him for the task at hand, I am not sure what would.

The specification requirements were ambitious at the time. The key aims being 100hp per litre of displacement, and 24 hour reliability for endurance racing, the most prestigious form of motor sport in the era.

Fuhrmann believed the path to this outcome lay in a higher revving engine, some 7000rpm, almost unheard of at the time, with more efficient combustion. The keys to achieving this, in his mind, were overhead cams for valve actuation, along with a roller bearing crank.

It was actually the connecting rod bearings

that contained roller bearings, not the main crankshaft bearings. Each connecting rod was supported either side on the crankshaft by a main bearing. The second part of the equation was twin spark plugs per combustion chamber, enabling a more efficient detonation of the compressed air/fuel mixture. Having worked for Porsche for as long as he had, and seen the benefits of small capacity, lightweight air cooled engines, he figured he would evolve the same air cooled boxer configuration, that had evolved from the original VW drawings created by Porsche back in the 30’s, rather than come up with a completely new design.

A lot of the engineering and calculations had been done for the existing production pushrod motors in this configuration.

Valve actuation was driven centrally from the crankshaft, out to each cylinder bank, by a long shaft, which through bevel gears, drove the exhaust cam shaft, which in turn drove the intake camshaft, through a vertical drive, again through a bevel gear. With the limitations of metallurgy in the day, this was deemed to be the most efficient, if alarmingly complex, way to drive the camshafts. Porsche already had some experience in this form of valve actuation with the design of the Cisitalia GP car several years earlier, and benefitted from the calculations, and time put into this. A very similar valve

904 GTS Carrera. Besides being powered by the pinnacle of 4 Cam evolution, at almost 200hp from the type 587 motor, it is consistently recognised as the most beautiful sports car Porsche ever made, by motoring journalists around the world. It was also the final road car for racing. The race car models following this, were race specific. actuation concept was used on the famous Auto Union GP cars, designed by Professor Porsche back in the 20’s. The Cisitalia design is a great story in its own right for another time, which unconsciously created the Porsche motor cars we love today. Lubrication was to be through dry sump technique, to reduce the overall height of the engine.

The reliability of the 4 Cam motors was notoriously poor if the gear lash was not adjusted correctly. Adjusting the valve clearances on a Carrera motor, typically takes 20-22 hours by an experienced mechanic! As you can imagine, with a total production of about 1500 motors, the number of experienced mechanics, are few and far between today, should you be the fortunate owner of one of these beauties. The actual process itself, of adjusting the gear lash, and valve clearance, makes for astonishing reading, involving carbon copy paper, to see the contact points on the bevel gears. This does not include the 100+ hours the initial motor assembly took, by the experienced factory technicians, which was about 50 times longer than a pushrod motor assembly, at the factory.

The 4 Cam motor evolved over its life, starting in 1953, at 1100cc with the early 550 Spyders, through to 1965 ending in its most powerful guise, out at 2000cc in the 904 GTS Carrera. Interestingly, throughout its life it consistently ran very close to its 100hp per litre of displacement design requirement, and when well maintained, was incredibly reliable in endurance racing.

The very first 4 Cam motors were referred to as Type 547. As with all Porsche engineering projects, they were referred to by the number they were by in house project number. There

were some minor design flaws that were quickly becoming apparent. The distributors were driven by each bank of intake valve cam shafts, and the vibrations caused at certain revs, affected the timing. This was overcome with the advent of the 547/2 motor design, which moved the distributor drive to the crankshaft, initially in a 30 degree V-Drive, then later to a 90 degree drive in the 547/3 series of motors. I say series, as there were minor changes that went from 547/3A, and B, differences being fan placement for F1 and experimental fuel injection. There were less than 5 of these motors manufactured, in each type. The 547 series ended with the 547/6 which was reduced in displacement to comply with F1 regulations of the time. In total 774 547 series motors were manufactured.

Some of the cars this motor type powered was the 550 Spyder, the 550A, 718 (proper one) RSK, RS60, RS61. Also Formula 1 and Formula 2 Elva-Porsche Bergspyder. Pretty prolific power plant to say the least!

The 692 series motors totalled 312 units.

The 547 series motors were followed by the 692 series motors. These had several refinements towards reliability. First and foremost being the introduction of plain journal rod bearings. Secondly, the aforementioned crank driven distributor drive, with the twin distributors set at 90 degrees, to each other.

The 692/1 motors introduced an oil cooler(s), which was lacking from the previous 547 series motors, along with a larger oil pump.

These were situated in various positions around the vehicle depending on the vehicle the motor was fitted to. The later 692/3 series motors also received more aggressive camshaft profiles, and larger main bearings on the crankshaft, enabling higher rpms. These motors were primarily used in the famous 356B Carrera GTL Abarth cars, which were nigh

As well as the production 4 cam series motors mentioned above, there were another series, Type 719, which were development prototype motors used as test stand or racing units.

There were many experimental aspects tried on the 719 motors, to test viability, reliability and durability. From early mechanical fuel injection, to desmodromic valve actuation, very little was untried in the search for reliable horsepower. Overall, by the end of the type 719 development, sadly very little of the work that went into them, made it to the production series of motors mentioned earlier. Solid records of actual numbers of this series are vague, and conflicting from different sources.

The final production series motors were the big dogs. Type 587. This motor was taken out to 2 litres in displacement, which was as far as Ernst Fuhrmann initially envisioned the motor to go out to, in its future, when originally designed.

The increase in displacement was following the established principle that “Displacement = torque”. This was to make the motor more competitive against its rivals on the race track, through better tractability, and more usable low end power. The engine case was significantly reinforced, to increase structural reliability.

Both compression and engine speed were also reduced to improve overall reliability, but due to the increased displacement, these were the most powerful series of 4 cam engines.

Some 610 motors were built in total and used in both the Carrera 2 series (GS and GT) of road going 356’s, the 904 GTS Carreras, and Elva-Porsche open wheeler race cars.

it was in establishing Porsche as a world class sports car manufacturer. The race wins over the years following the 4 cam’s introduction in the 550 Spyder, through to the 904 GTS Carrera, were comprehensive across many classes, and many overall wins in some of the world’s most important and famous events.

Targa Florio, Le Mans, Mille Miglia, Nurburgring 12 hour, Sebring 12 hour, Buenos Aires 6 hour, and naturally, the Carrera Panamericana, to name only a few. There are still plenty of the cars being campaigned in both Europe and North America. Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca every few years seems to bring a lot of them out of the woodwork, and plenty of 4 cam video action is available on YouTube, with a little digging, should you want to hear and see Ernst Fuhrmann’s finest in action.

There were several 4 cam motor specced cars delivered new to Australia. A few speedsters, a few spyders, several 356 coupes, and a couple of 904s. Most have now left our shores, due to the alarming values of these cars.

Sadly it means that most also don’t get driven anymore. Due to their $1.5m+ values there is only one Carrera Speedster that has remained, that the Australian 356 Register has a record of. Conveniently owned by a Queenslander who also has a 4 Cam coupe. I imagine his annual servicing invoices are stratospheric, only superseded by his family’s forthcoming inheritance, some time in the future.

Porsche Cars Australia actually bought a locally delivered car a few years ago, a 356A coupe, with GT spec body. It is the only classic that Porsche Cars Australia actually own. Speaking to PCA recently, they find the car a little temperamental, mainly because it is rarely driven.

There are many modern Porsche enthusiasts who are unaware of the historical significance of these 4 cam motors, and hopefully this little article will help them understand the importance of those little motors that struck fear into the hearts of anyone having to race against them in the 50’s and 60’s.

Personally, I have been fortunate enough to experience two 4 cam powered vehicles as a passenger, and as you can imagine, through my passion for these motors, I was overwhelmed with the experience. The intake noise was only overtaken by the cackle of the exhaust over 7000rpm. The acceleration is unbelievable for the era, which naturally is helped by the light weight cars these were in. The 718 RSK that I was fortunate enough to be driven in, was so raw, and exciting, it would be hard to experience something more pure as a race car. It is hard to believe they were designed as a road car! The other 4 cam powered car was a Carrera 2 GS. It was basically a luxury grand tourer, in comparison to the RSK, and seemed to have an unending rev range. It just kept getting faster and faster. In its day, it is hard to imagine a car that would surpass it, for both overall performance and comfort. It is easy to see how both of these cars have become so valuable in the world market. Not just for their rarity, obvious beauty, and high performance, they both actually provide a visceral experience that is unforgettable.

“The Hated”

Not exactly a barn find but she’s almost in original condition with a bit of character I recently joined the Porsche Club of WA with my recent purchase of a Porsche 996 911 Carrera 1999 model for the very reasonable price of $24,000. I’ve owned one of this model Porsche Carrera before along with a Boxster and the original Cayenne V8 and a beautifully simple VW microbus 1968 model made the same year I was.

I’ve always loved the quality and engineering of Porsche and before purchasing my most recent 911 Carrera convertible, I travelled to Germany and my wife and I enjoyed a factory tour watching the process at Stuttgart of how these wonderful machines of passion and luxury are made.

It was only when I returned to Perth and looked around for an affordable Porsche that I discovered the first water cooled Porsches were dubbed “the hated Porsche” by some of the purists out there.

It’s funny to think that a Porsche owner could hate an evolution of what is an amazing design both in the visual and engineering form, more so the fact that they didn’t go back to air cooled engines didn’t mean that they were wrong in the engineering department.

I love what Porsche and the Volkswagen group do and have so much to learn, share and enjoy because of what these people do, so that’s my intro and story. I’m basically a semi-retired person having my business in Indonesia. As my business partners are now running day to day business, I can now spend more time in Perth.

I have driven Ferrari and Maserati before owning my Porsche 911 Carrera S. This was a pre-owned car when I bought it. I truly enjoy this car very much. It is good for day to day drive and does not attract too much attention like other super cars.

My wife Joyce and I have two sons aged 40 and 37 years. The younger one is married with two children.

My passion, besides cars, is Golf and Photography.

Every year in March I go to Melbourne to watch the Formula 1. I have a group that has been going together to the Melbourne F1 Grand Prix for the past 8 years, and sometimes we also get together at the Singapore F1 Grand Prix.

I have been to Porsche events at the Barbagallo race track twice - one time to just watch cars and the other time with a group of photographers to take a lesson on car racing photography.

Growing up in the UK, I had little need for a car until my early twenties, relying on foot and pedal power as well as public transport. That is not to say I didn’t drive my parents’ cars (that I was allowed to), including a Vauxhall Victor estate, Ford Fiesta and Ford Cortina.

They retired to the Isle of Arran off the west coast of Scotland when I went to University and when I visited them during my semester breaks I developed a taste for driving around the island on the virtually deserted winding and mountainous B roads with little risk of police intervention (there was only one on the island). It was a bit like having a private rally course! There were several hazards but not of the legal variety. I variously ran over two sheep in two different cars and rolled one vehicle down onto a pebble beach, coming away in all cases unscathed physically, though my parents were unimpressed.

immediately excited by the low slung ride and the whirring sound of the flat 6 engine just behind me. He found a suitable spot to hand over to me and after gingerly engaging first gear I let out the clutch to move off.

That first test drive of the Cayman was, I have to say, nothing short of a revelation! It was a cinch to drive, once you had the feel for the clutch. The balance and poise of the car was sensational (and this has only impressed me more over time). The lightness of the steering and the free revving engine, which really takes off above 4000 rpm is a delight. In short, I was completely smitten.

I had two dubious forays into second hand car ownership, firstly obtaining a MG Midget, the sills of which it turned out were so badly corroded that the doors didn’t close properly. The exhaust manifold also had a habit of dropping off on longer runs.

My mechanical skills were pretty nonexistent in those days (fine with computers etc) and I passed the vehicle on. I had more luck with an Alpha Romeo Sprint for a year or so that I really enjoyed.

When I got my first proper job, I decided I needed a hot hatch like all twenty-somethings in that era. Whilst the VW Golf ruled the waves in that regard, I opted for the Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI. A car I still remember very fondly. It was a hoot to drive and seemed like it was on rails.

I was living near the New Forest in Hampshire at the time, again the area offering fabulous driving opportunities. From this, I graduated to the Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI, and though it was gruntier than the 1.6, it was not as sweet an engine as the smaller bore version.

A few years on and I joined a company offering a company car, so I sold the Peugeot and went through a number of unmemorable driving years in a Vauxhall Vectra! However, it was during those years that I met my future wife, Margaret, who is from Perth, and was nursing at Kingston-upon-Thames in West London where I had recently moved. After a number of visits to Australia to visit her family we married and over a period of subsequent years around became a family with the arrival of Michael, then Anna and later Charlie. We were bequeathed a SAAB 900 Turbo from my brother in law around this time, which I still consider to be one of the most comfortable

In 2007, we made the decision to move to Perth. My parents were no longer around by this time, Margaret had a large family here, and it seemed a great opportunity.

So come we did and have enjoyed the warmth and hospitality of WA ever since!

Aiming to get into the outback spirit we immediately purchased a Toyota Prado and we have since made a number of memorable camping trips to the Pilbarra where my fatherin-law had been raised at Bamboo Springs, a now defunct sheep station just south of Marble Bar. Our city runabout was a Mazda SP23 which wasn’t a bad car if you just need something to get from A to B reasonably briskly, but was pretty boring. However, when I read the reviews of the new BMW 135i that was to be launched in time for my 50th birthday, I decided that this was the car for me. This represented new performance territory for me and was a fantastic drive, with a twin turbo 3.0L straight six. A lot of fun!

However,vas the family grew bigger, I decided I needed a bigger sedan and swapped this for a new BMW 328i F30 (4 cylinder turbo).

Boy, I quickly missed the meatier and sweeter straight 6. I didn’t take long to revert and when the revised 2 series BMW arrived in the form of the M235i I went for it. It was in many ways similar the 135i but a much more refined car with a significantly better ride.

When does Porsche make an appearance you must be wondering? Well in 2016 the new M2 was launched and my mouth was watering.

I test drove it and was getting the ‘change over’ bug which I’m sure many readers of this magazine know all too well. However, my dear wife advised me that this was not an option while we had more important financial commitments such as school fees, mortgages etc. (yawn). So having caught the bug, I realized I needed to come up with a cunning plan and I started to cast around for a potentially acceptable alternative.

Purely on a whim, I took a look around one of the local used car dealerships, and came across a silver manual 2008 Cayman 987 2.7l. I had always loved the design of the Cayman and accepted the offer of a test drive on the spot. I was a little apprehensive, bearing in mind I hadn’t driven a manual car for some years, and also this was a Porsche!

The dealer was non-too convincing trying to find reverse gear to get the car out, but we headed down the freeway, and I was

I decided to do a bit more research and in a short time found an identical spec Cayman in black with only 39,000k’s on the clock at another local dealership. This ticked all the boxes and following a pre-purchase inspection I went ahead and, with a fair trade in for my existing car, bought it (with somewhat measured approval of Margaret).

This Cayman, who I have named Kim after my daughter remarked on its big beautiful curved rump, has been my pleasure to drive ever since. She attracts many compliments, particularly from Charlie’s schoolmates when I pick him up. We have taken Kim on several trips, mainly down south, and whilst the freedom I remember driving at speed in the UK simply does not exist here, for many generally good reasons, I’m always left smiling at the exquisite power delivery, handling and design touches. I’m also definitely a fan of manuals again, as well as the pleasure of having to work a naturally aspirated engine!

Will I go back to BMW in the future? Maybe, but probably only for an M-car. We have long-standing family membership of both the BMW Club WA (who kindly tolerate my move to the dark side) and more recently the Porsche Club WA, and have made many new friends as a result. All I do know is that trying different marques is great fun and to be recommended! The Cayman is beautifully designed, inside and out and thrilling yet easy to drive - a proper racing design, not a Sedan turned into a racer. There is no doubt that while it may not be the quickest, it is certainly the most focused and best handling sports car I have owned. I can only imagine what an up to date model would be like, and that, once the kids leave home (ha-ha!), could be a very mouthwatering prospect. On the other hand, it would be great to have a foot in the camps of both German rivals.

Porsche Stripes A 4 Wheel Journey of Life

Ageless Profile Growing up in rural New Zealand at the end of the Otago peninsula (next to the Royal Albatross Colony), I was surrounded on three sides with cliffs and water, a great environment with plenty of adventures with a tinge of danger for any young man.

The early 70’s was a period when kids thought for themselves and made up their own fun and games. You had breakfast with Mum and Dad then saw them again for dinner.

PlayStation/X-Box, even TV wasn’t an option.

My introduction to moving on 4 wheels came with a self-built trolley, using a length of 4x2, some old motor mower wheels, a wooden box for a seat and a length of rope to help with steering.

The only access to and from the heads was a narrow-sealed road which made up half of the track, the other half was a gravel access down to the local beach. This gave me my initial appreciation of the size and speed of oncoming vehicles and combining the difference of the handling requirements needed to maintain downward momentum transitioning from the chip seal to the unsealed gravel section down to the beach car-park.

This was the era when British Leyland ruled the colonies and my father got in on the action owning some classics (classics now in some people’s eyes) of his own starting with an Austin A40, Austin Maxi 1750 (used more oil than petrol), Hillman Avenger (best heater of any car), Holden Sunbird (upper-class version of the Torana) and later a Datsun Bluebird 2.0ZXE. A move into the big smoke of Dunedin and 56

tertiary education opened up whole new possibilities of adventures coupled with the ability to drive motorised vehicles.

My first vehicle was a Honda CT 90, yes the type the postie’s use nowadays to deliver the mail to your front door. Hours of fun was had in the surrounding hill tracks and a number of time trials through the flat via the front door down the hallway through the lounge and out of the kitchen then back to the front door. Surprising to also note how many people you can fit on a CT 90 and still move, 6 was my record.

First taster into a motorised 4 wheeled vehicle was a 1966 2 tone Hillman Super Minx purchased for a princely sum of $90NZ plus a ‘swappa’ crate (a dozen 750mm bottles of beer in a wooden crate) from the wizard of Dunedin, this was in partnership with 3 others mates.

The ‘minx’ provided a year of entertainment especially as a trampoline outside of local establishments and rallying in the surrounding hill suburbs during the small numbers of snow days. It also gave us a welcome break from the library and lectures.

Being a mid-sixties vehicle is stood up well to the occasional off’s into adjacent banks and poorly located lamp poles.

University years also meant occasional trips to the countryside in a couple of Morris Minors, 1955 split windscreen 850cc side valve and a late 60’s 1000cc. This was followed by the end of year Christmas excursion around the South Island in an early seventies Hemi two-barrel Valiant Coupe.

Life couldn’t get any better could it?

After tertiary education the overseas bug hit and it was off to ‘Old Blighty’ where another bug hit, ‘The Alfa Bug’. It started with a 1985 Alfa 33 followed by a 1988 Alfa 75 2.0L Twin spark, the two vehicles saw me through life in a number of counties including Surrey, Cornwall, Hampshire and Cornwall again. During my stay I did manage to dip my toe in the ‘Porsche’ water with test drives of a couple of early 70’s 911’s, both however would have required a number of pounds to restore and at that stage in my life I wasn’t going to be the person to do it Back to Christchurch, New Zealand with my 3 years’ stash of ‘911 and Porsche World’ mags saw a brief search for a 911 before the Alfa Bug continued, with a 1988 Alfa 33 and a 1974 Alfa 105 2000 GTV (which I imported last year to WA). Ten years of living in Christchurch and the introduction of earthquakes prompted a rather quick move to Perth in 2011.

Which finally brings me to the earning of my ‘Porsche Stripes’.

Four years ago with a bit of prompting from my mate Richard, and after a quick search of the Classic car market in WA, initially looking for an early 70’s coupe I landed upon an Australian delivered 1983 911 3.0 SC Cabriolet. A quick once over from a Porsche garage in the NE and a small sum of cash (compared to today’s market) the deal was done.

The time had finally come, after 45 years, I had reached the pinnacle, I was now the proud owner of a Porsche.

Once K-tec sorted out the fuel system, new

leads and distributor, replacement of the front right suspension unit (thanks for the once over mate, yes you know who you are) and a minor tune up, it was like a brand new car, ready for action. I’m currently trying to keep the car as original as possible so am in the market to replace the 17in Simons wheels with some real or replica 17in or 16in Fuchs. Apart from that there are no

major projects on the horizon, just finding the time to get out and about and enjoy.

I have since been enjoying driving around Perth, especially the treelined roads in the hills and yes there is still plenty of life in the old girl.

Since joining the Porsche Club late last year, and attending some of the unofficial outings, I am now looking forward to meeting some like-minded ‘air cooled’ people, use more of the earth’s resources, sit back and appreciate. Thank you ‘Ferdinand’.

The substantive owner of the 911, Etsue aka chauffeur’s wife The phrase “We are Porsche Club but not Posh Club” a member said in the Club’s web-site encouraged us to decide to join the Club when we were holding back a flinch.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation for the Club’s warm and welcoming atmosphere. The friendly members and various activities are making our life in Perth richer.

Now, let’s focus on the main subject i.e. our self-introduction.

The name of my boss (aka my wife) is Etsue.

Don’t worry about the pronunciation. It took me years to properly pronounce her name… On the other hand, Etsue usually calls me “chauffeur” because Etsue has been proudly a learner’s permit holder for the last 7 years across NSW to WA and still counting. We are going to apply for a Guinness World Record or UNESCO World Heritage!

(Etsue called “Devil”) whispered to me “If you don’t drive a 911, you may repent before you die”. It goes without saying that I headed straight to a dealer the following day and was fascinated with the 997 (Etsue said “I sold my soul to buy the 997”).

Oh, I almost forgot. We have a four-yearsold daughter Lily. She has a phonetic equivalent Japanese name which is similarly pronounced. Lily loves cars and hates princesses. Etsue is blaming me, of course.

She may be the youngest Porsche-head-girl in WA (from a doting parent’s perspective).

As Lily tends to be into her shell, and so are her parents, we hope she will be socialised if only a little through Club activities as well as her parents. Please always feel free to approach and speak to us.

Love At First Sight

It all started in August last year when my good friend and business partner Leonna one day showed up in her shiny new Mercedes Benz. She was very enthusiastic about the car that she had bought from a wholesale car dealership with all the extras at a very attractive price.

this was the car that I always wanted that I saw standing there in the second row behind all these Mercedes and BMWs. Why hadn’t I seen it before? It was a meteor-grey 2010 Porsche Boxster S 987 3.4L PDK convertible and it was in excellent condition. The odometer read 20,808km with perfect service history.

So, one Saturday morning in late August with nothing else to do I decided to visit the car dealership to look for a Mercedes SLK. I had a Mercedes sports car before and it was one of the most reliable cars I ever had. After half an hour looking at several models, a black SLK 55 AMG convertible caught my eye and I asked a member of the sales team for a test drive.

I went for a test drive that lasted considerably longer than the first one and I was absolutely thrilled. What a fantastic car, so graceful and elegant and so fast (especially in Sports Plus mode). It was love at first sight but – being the ever so prudent accountant always thinking very carefully what I spend my money on – I simply couldn’t say yes to the purchase there and then.

When we got back I wasn’t really convinced that this was ‘the’ car for me. After all, I had bought a new car just six months earlier that was perfectly fine for taking me from A to B. Walking back to the office of the sales rep past car after car my eyes fell on a Porsche and my heart skipped a beat. I knew in an instant that

I went home and promised myself that if the car was still there on Monday morning then it was to be. I took delivery the following Saturday. On the first sunny weekend in September I took my Porsche on a drive first to Araluen Golf Club for a coffee and then to

the Botanical Gardens. Roof down, sun in my face, wind in my hair and the lovely scent of a million wildflowers in the air, I couldn’t have been happier and thought how wonderful it must be to share the experience with other like-minded people. Later that afternoon I searched the Internet and came across the Porsche Club of WA. I became a member in October 2017 and have since attended several Club meetings and events including the Come and Try Day at Barbagallo race course.

So far, it has been a fantastic experience.

I greatly appreciate the company and camaraderie of the people that I have met in the Club. They are all very supportive and I have received a lot of help and good advice over the past few months. For me a Porsche represents the perfect marriage of art and technology, form and function and I enjoy every moment driving my Boxster.

Jen and our 2008 997 4S Hello fellow Porsche enthusiasts. To begin with we have to admit we have a point to ponder! How do we start writing a personal introduction about ourselves to strangers we have not yet met? Hopefully soon you’ll be new friends with at least one common interest. Consulted with Daniel and his advice was stick with the KISS principle.

So here we go… how did we cross paths with Porsche in the first place?

Since moving back south Mark had been contemplating an older Porsche for a retirement project (not that he needs a retirement project). Little did we both realise just how the value of these babies had escalated!

Mark was an active member of the VW Club of WA in the 70s/80s, somewhat competitively in State Rally, more so in club events and Directorship roles of State Rounds.

Some people may recall the Jim Bright 500! In that context, Mark endured an invigorating experience in the left hand seat of a rally blown 911…sideways, opposite lock, probably around the old ton…

In the forest…retrospectively regarded as a challenge to his longevity. A 1970s introduction to Porsche!

Fast forward, albeit not sideways, to about 2014, the two of us finally got together after a few years of doing the long-distance relationship gig (about 3500km).

Mark moved back south and we both knew a rural lifestyle was the only option for sane living.

Our first bush block together was initially secured over a handshake in the Beadon Bay hotel in Onslow - sight unseen to Mark though Jen had a glimpse of the mess! Just as we were about to embark on owner building late 2016, a dream home just 1km away came on the market and we didn’t muck around.

Ticked all the boxes and a bonus is that we’re so close to some wonderful drives, in the bush, on the beach and some great back black road hoots.

After a 40-year career, about 30 of those living and working “up north” (mainly Kimberley and NT), Mark dropped out of the work scene in 2016 and is now the unofficial, unpaid, full time ‘manager’ of our bush retreat.

Onward from here we look forward to getting to a few events and drives this year and meeting many of you folks!

Mmmm….It was seeming as though a reasonable 911 was perhaps out of our reach…Until a very tidy 996.2 cab was spotted in Barbagallo’s having just arrived that same day. Had to grab it before it went!

And now after 18 months of total driving bliss Mark was bitten again by that pesky bug - not the VW or beetle type, but the bigger ‘cousin-brother’ Porsche bug. We have just taken delivery of a very clean and tidy 2008 997 4S from the Eastern

Adelaide Motorsport Festival

I recently competed in the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, with an Adelaide mate, Greg Blackall, in my 1965 Porsche 356 SC Coupe. This event features a whopping 30 special stages across 3 consecutive days of closed Adelaide Hills roads.

Park in the footsteps of the great Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost & Nigel Mansell etc.

DAY 1 consisted of 10 events, including technical closed-circuit sprints of approximately 2.5 to 3 kms through some exhilarating mountain and wine regions, including Paracombe, Gorge Road, Willbrook, Kangaroo Creek and Old Norton Summit Road.

Points were deducted if you were a second over or a second under this designated time.

Of special interest to me, having spent my childhood and early adult years in Adelaide, was to compete at the Collingrove Hillclimb, situated in the Barossa wine region near Tanunda.

I vividly remember watching fabulous historic cars sprinting up this technical track, with its tricky left hander at the top of the hill, followed by a hard right, and then a technical chicane prior to the exit.

DAY 2 we headed to Mallala Motorsport Park, to compete in a tight motorkhana circuit with a garage finish and then two fast laps of the full track.

We then completed awesome hill circuits including, Anstey’s Hill, Chain of Ponds and the tricky Corkscrew, (configured as the name suggests).

DAY 3 took in the McLaren Hill wine region, including Willunga Hill, Uraidla, Norton Summit and Basket Range, culminating at Victoria Park, where we raced a section of the original Formula One track at Victoria

Because the “bathtub” has no roll bar, I entered in the regularity section, which had a defined completion time for every event.

Of the 13 cars in our category, there were two 911’s, a McLaren 570 and an M5 BMW. After day one, trying to maintain a designated time, we were placed 6th out of 13 cars and at one point, even with a 30 second gap between each car, I nearly rear ended the M5, going excessively slow, to clock the designated time.

From day 2 onwards, I decided to ignore the regularity component of each event and compete at a spirited pace, which was still very competitive, considering the calibre of the field, as my Porsche only weighs 847 kgs, and closed circuit, tight technical roads, are its forte.

At the end of the three-day event, fans were treated to a final day celebration of rallying yesteryear, with a spirited demonstration of historic cars at Victoria Park.

Featured in the event were other Perth competitors, including Joe Ricciardo, father of Formula 1 driver Daniel, in his 1974 Porsche 911. Also featured was Marc Percat, whose son Nick is a Supercars Bathurst and Adelaide 500 champion.

Guest appearances included Craig Lowndes, driving a Ferrari FXX, and cycling legend Stuart O’Grady.

For next year’s event the new Tailem Bend super circuit, “The Bend” will be included.

In all, the Adelaide event featured 260 entered cars, across 13 categories, ranging from the entry level Prima Tour to parades of rare and exotic marques, including Ferrari, BMW, Audi, Aston Martin, Mercedes and Porsche.

I loved the event so much, the Porsche “flying bathtub” will be competing again, this year, in December 2018.
