Its AGM time and thank you to the Management Committee members standing down and those re-standing once again.

The Management Committee has a number of important issues on the table at any one time as you would expect but at the top of the list again is the club addressing the future of our PCQ track days. Before I start I have considered how deep I go explaining this divisive issue but I have a lot of time for our members capacity to digest, comprehend the facts and when all is said and done unite as one for the common good of the club.

Background: For those not aware of the situation – let me give you the elevator version. We have for many years held a vibrant and at times controversial motorsport championship that has been supported by a significant number of our members. Myself included. Approx. 35 to 45 regular entries per round at a cost to members of around $200 each entrant per round. This was the case from around the year 2000 to around 2010. Now for a number of reasons our track day numbers have fallen to just 25 to 30 entries per round with our entry price still unchanged at around $200 per entry however over this 10 year period the track day costs have near on doubled. We have had significant resistance from club entrants to increasing prices in line with the actual cost of each entry. Porsche Club of Queensland Ill point out is the only car club in Queensland that hires a full race track for its exclusive use.

A privilege for our PCQ members who enjoy track days. This has over the years turned from being randomly subsidized round to round – sometimes even turning a small profit - into what I see as a never ending loss making ‘club entitlement’. Regardless of the ongoing clubs losses or the time donated by other members to bring the events together. Not everyone who participates obviously has that view but the participants who appreciate the track days know who they are and I am sure the participants who expect us to put on track days regardless of losses.

At the start of 2015 the Management Committee capped the motorsport loses for the full 12 months ahead at $15,000 as a show of our full and final support to turn the numbers around. This was requested by the Motorsport Director who has since resigned. As of July 2015 with many club rounds still ahead unfunded we were knocking on that $15,000 door. YTD that has meant on average we have subsidized each track day entry by approx $85.00 each. That is clearly unsustainable. As Morgan Park Round 7 was facing more loses as a 2 day event ( in spite of the un-bankable ‹expressions of interests›) and in light of the conflict with Leyburn and Inter-Club Challenge on at the same time we took the hard decision to cancel Morgan park and regroup.

The Future: Following our upcoming August AGM we expect to have a new Motorsport Director. FYI we will be holding a Motorsport catch up of interested parties where the Motorsport Director will be discussing how we can rebuild track day numbers. A lot of misinformation is circulating and sadly as President it is not hard to get the message track days and a competition in our club is interpreted as a basic right. It has been recommended that we cut our PCQ magazine from full colour back to black and white so we can put more money into subsidizing PCQ track days.

In addition, many members have donated time so our annual competition can flourish but alas throwing money at it along with members time for free has not proven enough. So we have put up the flag, put our PCQ Chq book away and await a revised plan from our ​new ​Motorsport Director.

We have had Porsche classing issues, Porsche weight issues, dyno HP issues to name a few – all part of a vibrant and certainly entertaining track day but the reality remains we need to get behind our motorsport as one unified voice for it to have a future. One unified group. Past members and new members alike. We can rebuild track day numbers by inviting other car

clubs such FERRARI, BMW, HSV and AMG who are getting into track days. Whatever it is - DO IT. We all love our motorsport but it is not for just 25 subsidized club members. Nor is it up to one Motorsport Director alone.

Alternatively we can reduce our PCQ magazine from 6 issues to 4, we can heavily reduce our annual PCQ Xmas party expenses and awards night costs. Alternatively we could raise our annual membership fees – or charge 2 alternative membership fees. One fee for members who enjoys our track days and another for those who do not reflecting the true cost of PCQ membership. Or we just get 35 to 40 entries per viable round. Something has to give.

I will not be recommending to the Management Committee we charge different membership fees for PCQ motorsport members, nor will we be reducing the bar tab at our PCQ Xmas party, nor will be reducing our club magazine content, colour pages or number of issues per year.

We will simply unite, focus on the issue and rebuild. But I reiterate at the risk of repeating the message – we are at a pivotal point.

A lot of great things are going on in the club including the planning of our 40’s themed Xmas Party planned at the TIVOLI opposite the old Museum at Bowen Hills so keep an eye out for the invitation which may make this issue and an eye out for a costume. We also have near on 70 attendees at each and every monthly club night and record memberships so we have a lot going right. Just need to get behind our Motorsport.

We certainly are a passionate lot going by the emails and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

From Mountain to Mountain in the Cayenne S On Sunday the 29th of March, the club had a social drive from Mt Gravatt to Mt Tamborine which we were lucky enough to go on with a loan car from Porsche Centre Brisbane. It was a really good family outing and a different experience doing it in a family car. The last time we were part of a social drive as a family was when the kids were small and we could fit them in the backseats of Derek’s 1969 911S. It was a different experience to the one with the teenagers in the back of the Cayenne.

Club and everyone could quickly get an early morning coffee before the drive started. We were a good group of cars that went on the drive and it’s always nice to be part of the Porsche group when on the road. The road Greg chose for us was worth the drive and we enjoyed taking the Cayenne up the mountain.

The amazing thing about the Cayenne is that although it is a family car, you can still feel that you are in a sports car. It doesn’t feel heavy and kept up well with the other Porsches.

When we arrived at Mt Tamborine, we had a nice lunch and it was great to catch up with everyone. The food was delicious and the lunch had a very relaxing atmosphere. It was

so good to see so many club members on the social drive. If you haven’t been on a social drive, make sure you put that on the to-do list.

It is worth it!

The drive back to Brisbane in the Cayenne was peaceful. The kids were happy in the back of the car and we were happy taking turns to drive.

This is my first article on Motorsport. You may or may not be aware that Ian Gall resigned from the role of Motorsport Director on the 13th July.

Ian’s resignation prior to the AGM has left a gap in the running of the motorsport activities until we elect a new Motorsport Director. I will try and provide some news on the previous motorsport activities and the future events.

Before I do, I would like to highlight my view on motorsport in the Club and I think my view reinforces the President’s Prose.

In my three years on the committee, motorsport has dominated the discussion at just about every meeting. It is in need of some reflection on why we do motorsport and for me it should be about the ‘Spirit of Competition’: Our motorsport events are intended to give members the opportunity to use their vehicles in competition with each other. Our core values include the encouragement of novice and less experienced drivers, friendly competition, and

respect for other competitors, their cars, and everyone present at an event.

I feel we have lost the spirit and this should be our focus going forward to make it the success again it once was. It also needs to recognise that some members enjoy the social side of the club, the club meetings, the concourse, the friendships, the magazine and we need overall balance to satisfy the needs of all our members. I wish our new Motorsport Director well in the role and I will support whoever that is to ensure we have the Spirit back and balance in the club again. OK, that’s enough, now the motorsport activities:

Club Championship - Previous Motorsport Rounds. I understand the results of the previous round will be issued shortly. I have no other news on this. The cancellation of the Morgan Park weekend was necessary and unfortunate. With Ian’s resignation and the ongoing losses incurred by motorsport coupled

with the Interclub Challenge and Leyburn occurring on the same weekend, it was going to stretch the organisers and the participation and threaten further losses that the club cannot afford. I hope to see you all at the next round on 23rd October at Lakeside either as a participant or spectator.

Interclub Challenge – We have competed well so far and the next round is at Lakeside Skidpan on the 16th August and by the time you read this, hopefully we have moved from second overall to first overall.

Leyburn Sprints – A number of our members are participating in the Leyburn sprints on the 15th and 16th August and I wish all competitors well and hopefully they represent the marque well.

This will be my last report of Membership Secretary after 9 years, as I can no longer commit the time to the position, which it requires, so I am handing over the reins to Michael Paine.

Hi everyone it’s great to see even with much cooler nights that members are still attending our club nights in great numbers.

Since my last letter we’re had a couple of great social events with more to come later in the year.

Some of us have combined the Inter-Car-Club Challenge and made it a social event.

Back in May some of us participated in the Inter-Car-Club Regularity event run by the BMW Club at Lakeside where the charity was ‘Beyond Blue” and $7,000 was raised on the day and a cheque presented to a representative of Beyond Blue at the end of a great days ‘nonracing’ the beauty of Regularity is you set your own pace & have fun at your speed.

This week (Friday 17th July) we had three teams enter the Inter-Car-Club Challenge hosted by the MG Car Club (Team Cayenne – 911-GT-3 – Renault Meganne RS) who set up a Night Navigation run around the streets of Mt. Gravatt – Cannon Hill – Murarrie – Lytton – Manly, it was challenging & fun even if it was a very cold night – with details on how the event went are in a separate article.

Don’t forget motorsport events can also be a great social event – even if you just come along to watch how one works.

The Picnic run over Mt Glorious to Somerset Dam was great fun – details are in a separate article.

Other events for later this year are an afternoon tea drive – picnic in Toowoomba - Family Fun day at the Games Centre at Helensvale where you can go-kart family and friends – rockwall climb or see who’s the best at driving simulators.

Don’t forget to start planning your outfit for the 1940’s themed Christmas Party – with jazz / swing band this will be a great night out – details to follow in the next magazine –also keep an eye on the club social & Facebook page.

Member Profile We joined Porsche Club as we love to drive.

We’ve done quite a few driving holidays and we enjoy the open road. We’ve been on some fabulous drive days finishing up in some lovely towns for lunch.

We had wanted a Porsche since our first drive of one. Years ago my girlfriend worked for Porsche Gold Coast. The ‘Drive the Range’ was coming to town. She knew we would be smitten and booked us a place. We drove all the cars and ended up lunching at Albert River Winery. She sold us a Porsche that day. It just took a few years for us to find ours.

We’ve had many memorable social days over the years. Simple ones such as beach cricket and a sausage sizzle at Manly Beach are fun and relaxed. A good opportunity for a catchup over a game and a snag. The concourse at Omiston House is another day like that. Boys fuss over their cars and us ladies do chicken and champagne breakfast on the lawn. A few years ago we had a ball in town for our

Christmas party. I love to frock up and have an excuse to have my hair done. Normally its a mess at social events from driving with the roof down!

We have a Boxster S in yellow we bought from Brisbane centre. I love the yellow. But the daily drive is a Jeep. The boxster doesn’t tow so good.

Our family consists of Craig, me, our dog, 2 horses, a black cockatoo, fish, 2 chooks, and 3 parrots. I work from home thankfully so I can tend to our zoo. Which is probably why one of my dream cars would be one of those huge F trucks. Or a James Dean 356 roadster.

I come to club nights to keep my husband company but I also enjoy catching up with the ladies there too. I’ve made some good friends over the years. More ladies should attend so they can have some input into events. Its hard to get girly things on the calendar when we are outnumbered!

The lure of the ring - Part 2

If you have read part 1 you are now probably wondering how much it costs to visit the Nurburgring and how I came to find it and race there. First of all there are the flights, you can easily justify this as a holiday to the better half, after all to experience the Nurburgring you can do it in a day, depending on how that goes it may become an obsession which is what happened to me. Later in the article I will give a brief run-down of the costs, first I have to explain some more about this epic place and how I found it.

I found out about this mysterious place about 10 years ago, a racing friend sent me a video of a guy called Hans-Joachim Stuck, a legend of the Nurburgring and Le mans winner. The video was a lap of the track, he suggested on my upcoming trip that I check out the track and I decided I would. I took my 2 year old son and then wife there, got lost getting there, hired a Porsche 997 Carrera S and did 3 laps without a clue of what I was doing on a tourist day.

but because the agreement was in German I trusted my track driving skills and the Porsche driver I was following. Let’s just say it worked out ok and I don’t recommend this!

After 3 laps I had the buzz that you only get from something extraordinary, something that makes you feel alive and knowing you are mortal, the people that know how to drive this track are the locals, some of them are crazy and talented. From that day forward I knew I had to come back and race the track.

I would guess that I am driving the track still about 95% of what I would on any other track, that is simple common sense and a lack of track time. But when I say lack of track time it doesn’t really make sense until you drive the track and that each lap is over 22km’s.

Over the 10 years I estimate I have done about 550 laps as a driver and about 200 as a passenger giving tuition. That’s over 100 hours on track, the most I have spent on any track including Bathurst. Sabine Schmitz has

done well over 30,000 laps. She’s a pretty good driver and very obliging (ask Jason Herman from Porsche Centre Brisbane, he’s still proud she slapped him on the butt before posing for a selfie). When I first met her it was a blur, not from the speed but the schnapps and beer we consumed 2 days before 1st practice. It was my first 24 hour race and I was telling her I was well prepared with 100 laps, she promptly laughed and jokingly warned me I might still die. Not to be phased I am still glad the crap car we had that 1’st year crashed without me in it, it was the first time I was scared to drive a race car.

This place takes a lifetime to learn. The best way to be competent is to use the services of a company that knows the place, for me that is RSR Nurburg. Owned and operated by Ron Simons and his experienced team you can hire a well sorted and track prepared car from a Renault Twingo to a McLaren or GT3 RS.

1 lap in a Clio will cost just 99 Euro, 4 laps in a Cayman S is 1099 Euro and the GT3 Porsche is 2499 Euro. It can sound expensive but as a

race car driver it’s great value, these cars are subject to track driving and to ensure safety they are well maintained. It’s a lot cheaper than taking your own car over.

There are lots of other packages, local road tours, First timer packages, tuition, track days, the list goes on. There’s also the added attraction of Spa Francorchamps being only an hour or so away, one of my top 3 circuits in the world.

Ron Simons is a great friend and he pointed me in the right direction to race there, not only have I enjoyed racing there but I have many friends that work there and race there from all over the world, it is like a brotherhood. It’s also a beautiful part of Europe so when we are not on track there is a lot of fine culture to soak up with the octane smell lingering. The local driver pubs, authentic German food and wine is abundant, it’s now like a second home for me.

lover and especially Porsche lovers. A bespoke trip experiencing the culture, myth and cars around Nurburgring and Spa will be organised for a strictly limited few. It’s still in the concept stage but I can confirm that the experience will include the Cayman S, GTS, GT4, 991 GT3 and GT3 RS at both Spa and Nurbrurgring, hot laps and racing. Porsche News will feature the event as soon as it’s finalised in the coming months, put September 2016 in the diary with a big happy face, this is one experience that you won’t want to miss out on.

I hope with these articles I have Lured you to experience the Nurburgring or if you have been there before you have reflected the same as I do each time the place pops up in my Facebook news feed, jealous of my friends that are there while I am here working for the next escape from reality.

It’s not a place, it’s really a place for therapy, that’s my justification and I am sticking to it!

I’m In Love With My Car…Gotta Feel For My Automobile…

There is a window of time in a woman’s life – post kids at school and pre grandchildren – when you can drive a sports car. Perhaps I’ll clarify that a little more – I mean ALL the time.

That is - other than the obvious – with no kids at all. Before my babes, I drove a couple of very nice, very fast sports cars and ever since my kids entered my life I drove the standard, boring, modest ride for transporting the tribe and their mates to and fro from school; and my paintings to and fro from galleries. I knew I had to have this standard kind of car due to its practicality – but geez I hated it as I’m not your standard chick. However, since my husband owned about 8 different cars in the time I owned my Lexus 4WD (12 years), I figured it was well and truly my turn.

I looked at a number of options to replace my car but nothing really appealed to me for quite some time. And I’d been dreaming of driving a Cayman for a few years and I looked at a number of first and second hand cars. I even designed my own with a bright yellow paint job, black trim and a few sexy extras inside too. (Steve Tibaldi was such a patient man!)

But I shoved the whole idea aside mid last

year, when I figured the expense was all a bit much for little ol’ me and I suddenly felt, er, undeserving of owning such a magnificent thing.

But then in about early October 2014, Sparksy visited PCB about something to do with his racing car and bugger me – a brand new aphrodisiac red Cayman S with black rims and red belts, glistened on the showroom floor and smacked her lips at him.

He took a few snaps of her and sent them to me right away, and I boomeranged back to him stating my firm interest.

To cut a long story short – I drove my lovely set of wheels right out of the showroom door a couple of weeks later, but not before Mark Webber signed under my bonnet. In fact, being an artist – I directed him on how he should hold my fat black texta for his signature, apparently much to a small crowd’s astonishment.

At Christmas time, I met and played golf with former Red Bull driver and Webber team mate, Christian Klein at Twin Waters with a couple of other nice blokes and I begged him to come back to mine to sign under my

bonnet. So he did. (Hey what a line…)

And since I’ve befriended Porsche Carrera Cup Driver, Warren Luff – he signed under my bonnet just a few months ago too.

So now I store my fat black texta in the glove box just in case, and I’ll be replacing it annually to ensure fresh ink.

Yet still my aphrodisiac red Cayman S was not quite flash enough and following Targa Tassie 2015 where I met up with another very nice young man who drive his red GT3 (same aphrodisiac red colour), accompanied with Martini Racing Stripes, I complimented him on his weapon highlighted with a splash of colour indicating “GO!”. It didn’t take too long for a creative soul like me to figure that the Martini Racing Stripes not only looked good on the body of a white or silver Porsche 911, but a red slinkymalinky body shape like my Cayman S as well.

So about 2 months ago, I asked my other buddy – Tim Best from Signright at Bulimba – to add my stripes along the sides, over the bonnet, roof and rear; then I headed to downtown Tint-A-Car at Auchenflower to blacken my windows as dark as possible without being penalized.

Although I’ve shopped out my number plates for these images to hide my identity for this publication – I guess I’m the only woman (indeed person) in Australia getting around town in the sexiest car on the planet – the one and only Martini Racing-striped red Cayman S. I hope you like my ride and if you’re remotely famous with Porsche and motorsport, you too can sign under my bonnet…

Sunday Drive - Somerset Dam On our drive down from Elimbah to Jindalee we were met with changing weather conditions on Sunday morning, on our way to catch up with other PCQ members.

On arriving at Coffee Club – DFO quite a few several members took advantage to arrive early to catch up with friends/make new friends over a coffee and for some a hearty breakfast.

We got underway and regrouped at the National Park info centre at the Gap – to ensure everyone had the opportunity to travel as a group.

The weather then followed our group across Mt Glorious for the social drive onto Somerset Dam, making for an interesting drive which included some light showers, fog patches, cloud cover and after about 20 minutes at the Dam fine sunny skies all making for a great days drive.

I see this as a family day, I brought a Frisbee and

soft mini Cricket bat and soft cricket ball so little kids and big kids alike could have some – Hamish brought kids and we soon had a Frisbee comp happening which was a lot of fun, and later Phil Hart decided to use the soft cricket ball as a soccer ball and was kicking and heading the ball around the picnic ground.

Picnic blankets were laid out – others brought their own picnic chairs and others used the picnic ground facilities, everyone mixed in and conversations were quickly flowing.

We had several new members attend some having only recently moved to QLD from interstate, along with Life Members Phil & Gail Hart who shared social event stories for the last 22 + years.

It was great to see and everyone shared stories of the drive out and how the changing weather conditions made it such fun – some shared stories

of recent travel adventures around Australia and overseas.

In all 21 cars – with nearly one of every model represented the only models missing – 356 – 928 and Cayenne.

The photos show only some of the great cars that convoyed across Mt. Nebo and Mt. Glorious and onto The-Spit picnic grounds at Somerset Lake/ Dam, Our convoy included early 911’s, 964, 933, 966, 997, a turbo, GT-3’s, GTS, Boxster, Cayman, 924, 944, 968, & Macan S. By about 2.30pm most had decided to pick a direction and head on home it was a fun day out with Porsches and friends.

Wander around the pits at any big historic meeting and you’re bound to meet some real characters. One of them is Stan Adler, a race regular with his very desirable 1975 Porsche Carrera 2.7 “I started racing an FJ Holden in the late sixties, a sports sedan, and had a lot of fun with that. Never ever thought I’d have a Porsche. I remember Alan Hamilton lapping me in an old Porsche 911 at the old Hume Weir circuit.”

That may have planted the seed, but it was direct experience that tipped him over the edge. “A friend of mine brought one back from England, took me around the block and that was it.” That was in 1977. “In 1983 I bought my first Porsche – a three litre Carrera – and did some club motorsport and then the bug bit.

“In the interim I decided I didn’t want to race the Porsche, so I bought an Escort rotary sports sedan from Queensland, and then I bought John Burke’s EH, then Harry Bargwanna’s XU-1 Torana – which was Alan Grice’s car – and then I wanted to race the Porsche.

“So in 1992 I built a car for the old Porsche Cup series. Eventually the cup was taken over by Porsche Motor Cars Australia. Historic motorsport came on the scene, so in 2007 I built this car.

“It’s an English car, so we built it from scratch.

It debuted at Winton in 2007 and in 2008 at Sandown it was on the podium – second outing. I was very pleased with the result.

“It’s a continual development, chasing someone in front of you. It’s a lot of fun. I race it also in production sports cars in Queensland against Nissan GTRs and GT3 Cup cars. I put

some slicks on it and at Lakeside I can get on the podium if I’m lucky, but at Queensland Raceway they have too much grunt.

own, sometimes with a little bit of support. If you prepare the car properly in the workshop, there’s very little maintenance at the track.

“About 20 cars of similar shape race in Group S, but this is the gun car. The engine is based on the famous 2.7 RS. Some of the clues include the mechanical injection, the throttle bodies and the injection pump. These engines developed 210 horsepower when they were built. We’re allowed to modify them and increase them by 60 thou or 1.5mm, camshafts, high compression, so we can get a lot more horsepower out of them.

What are your tips for buying an historic race Porsche? “You buy one with pedigree and test it. If the person says it does 1:47 at Eastern Creek, you need to go out and drive it and make sure it does something like that.

“The other cars you see on the track look identical – they’re three-litre Carreras. Because they’re three-litre you’d think they’d be better. They were 200 horsepower originally.

However they have a K-jetronic system, it’s very difficult to get horsepower. There have been a couple of guys who have managed to get pretty good power, but they’ll never ever beat a 2.7.

“What they do have, because they’re a later model car, is they use a 50 series tyre but we have to use a 60 series. That’s probably worth a second a lap, so things balance themselves out.”

What’s good about racing a Porsche? “The character. They just have so much charisma. I actually bought Ray Lintoff’s GT3 Club Sport, but I’m quicker in this. I didn’t like the power steering – I guess I’m too old – lots of people tell me I drive it like an FJ Holden! I just love the car and what you can do with. So I keep developing it.

Does it live up to the brand’s reputation for being very robust? “I usually come on my

Is there a trick to looking after them? “Getting a very good mechanic to maintain it – and maintain it regularly. Whilst they’re very reliable, you still need to keep an eye on things: do the tappets, check the clutch – a lot of people don’t check the clutch and they burn out. They’re a great car but, like anything, they need to be looked after.

“I’m 68 – I don’t know how many more years I have on the track. I used to look at Brock – he was a bit older – and Jimmy Richards – he’s a bit younger – and use them as a benchmark.

If he keeps going I can keep going. I’m semiretired but need the business to support the motor racing.

“It’s been a love story. I actually have a business called Performance 9, so I’m lucky to make a business out of a passion.

“The business is in Queensland at present, I started in Sydney and moved to Melbourne for 12 years and then I moved up there to be close to the grandkids – up at Yatala near the Stone brothers and Erebus and all that sort of thing.

“These days I just specialise in performance parts for Porsches – mainly 1965 to 1989, so I sell what I race.”

The Bucket List Tour of Europe Part Two

- Drive Porsches through the Alps and Dolomites, Munich and Merano - See the Porsche and Mercedes-Benz Museums, Stuttgart - See and drive over the Millau Viaduct, Millau - Spend Bohemian Time with nephew in Toulouse Continuing my Bucket List adventure and now on a real high after catching up with friends in the UK, travelling the EuroTunnel, in a Porsche no less, being at Le Mans Classic and then driving across France to see the Schlumpf Collection, I was now really ready for my prime Bucket List item – The Porsche Travel Club Tour of the Dolomites.

I arrived in Munich the evening before the tour and checked into the Prinzregent Hotel in Messe which was the assembly point for the tour (nice digs by the way). Next morning our group of 19 guests from Hong Kong, Switzerland, Germany, USA, Singapore, Malaysia and yours truly from Australia were met by our Porsche Tour leaders Stephen Rudloff and Johanna Lang, and logistics co-ordinator Christian Markmann.

After completing the paperwork formalities, we were each assigned a near-new 991 Carrera 4S. Mine was a black cabriolet which I found ironic as there are two things I don’t particularly like in cars and that is the colour black and soft-tops. However, the irony was forgotten the minute I hopped in and turned the key.

We were divided in two groups of five Carreras each led by a Macan Turbo and headed out of Munich towards Austria and our touring base in Meran, Italy.

It became evident very quickly why we were all each allocated a Carrera 4S even though I had asked for a Cayman S. With winding and potentially wet roads the selection of all-wheel drive with PASM was a smart move as this provided a level of safety control that would be manageable by most levels of driving skill. We were actually instructed not to turn off PASM nor activate the Sports Plus mode (which provided aggressive handling and performance) as either of these actions would void our insurance in the case of an accident. At first I thought this may dull the driving experience but I was pleased to find it actually enhanced it as we were able to drive the cars faster and harder than otherwise would have been possible on the road conditions we encountered. I was able to actually experience PASM in action firsthand in one of the initial winding and wet set of curves. While accelerating through a curve I could feel the rear of the car momentarily let go but within a microsecond it corrected itself and all I had to do was continue steering it in the right direction. Very impressive! This gave me very quick confidence in what was still an unfamiliar car.

We all soon discovered the other just “Sport” button which we were allowed to use. This not only sharpened the throttle response and the gearchange points of the already fabulous PDK gearbox but also opened up flaps in the exhaust system to provide a free-flowing symphonic note to occur at all revs, which made you wonder why Porsche bother fitting expensive sound systems to their cars as there are only two audio channels worth listening to and they are ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’. In ‘Normal’ mode the exhaust would remain as a moderato growl but change to a melodic howl when the engine got past about 3,000 rpm. These were even more enhanced when one retracted the softtop. Travelling through the myriad of tunnels within the Alps was sheer orchestral bliss in either Normal or Sport mode particularly when one would be slowing from high speed and having the PDK gearbox blipping the throttle while changing down gears. This was my first experience at driving with PDK and I am hooked. The car was in the correct gear all the time and the gear changes were so smooth the only way of knowing you changed gear was the engine note.

Moving onto other delights, for those of you who have been on Porsche Tours you know that it’s not just about the driving. It is also about the places you visit and the food and wine that is pre-arranged for the journey. Well, we soon discovered that this tour was no different.

First Day, Lunch: Schlossanger Alp Restaurant, Pfronten: - Menu: Die Tomatenkremsuppe mit Brotcroutons + Die Maishähnchenbrust und Markgemüse + Die Panna Cotta von der Buttermilch mit Erdbeersalat und Erdbeersorbet Driving through the Tyrol region was like driving through a postcard.

The scenery was so spectacular that we didn’t mind being held up occasionally by slower cars so we could admire the views. The further south we got and into the Alps, the scenery and the roads just got better and better. The first day’s 350 kilometres from Munich to Meran (Merano to the locals) was just a taste of what was to follow over the next few days. We arrived at our base at the Hotel Therme , Meran (famous for its thermal spring spa) and I was immediately captivated by the town from my hotel room window.

The history of Meran is that it was originally part of Austria but following the wars the borders changed and it is now part of Italy. It becomes readily obvious that it retains the best of both cultures and even the language seems Austro-Italian. The day didn’t finish there as we were again treated to another culinary treat for dinner at; First Night’s Dinner - Hotel Therme, Meran Menu Caponata siciliana mit Stracciatella di Burrata und Speckröllchen + Garnelenspießchen auf Peperoni-Polenta und mediterranen Aromen + Steak vom Angus-Rind mit Sommertrüffel auf Blattspinat mit Rotweinsauce und RacletteKartoffeln + Vanille-Soufflé mit Beerenallerlei und Sorbet von der Bitterschokolade I woke next morning thinking I had died and gone to heaven as I looked out my window at the beauty of Meran and that the previous day’s wet weather had cleared, and to see a fleet of Porsches ready to take us on our second day’s journey through some 250 kilometres of the world’s most spectacular scenery along some of the most famous mountainpass roads in Europe, in particular, the Stelvio Pass.

Leaving the hotel soon after breakfast, we followed our group’s leader Johanna through the morning traffic of Meran which contained its mix of exuberant Italians and more sedate Austrians. We soon cleared the traffic and with enthusiastic anticipation we headed towards Prad am Stifserjoch for the approach to the Stelvio Pass.

It soon became apparent that either Johanna was a very competent driver and/or the Macan Turbo was a very fast car equal in performance and handling to the Carreras. Basically we in the Carreras were no match for Johanna in the Macan. Boy but was it fun trying to keep up! The more I drove the 4S the more amazed I was at what a competent car it is.

It invited me to take risks such as overtaking while approaching hairpin bends, and at no time did it feel that it was not going to achieve the risky moves I had started. Risky moves were necessary if you wanted to get onto clear road and enjoy your surroundings.

This was so apparent on our climb up the 48 bends of the South Tyrol approach to Stelvio and also for the 34 bends going down the other side. Stelvio is referred to the “Queen of Passes” and is the second highest paved road in Europe. Being mid-week we had a reasonably clear run up and over Stelvio with only having to take a few risks. The narrow winding road is barely wide enough for two cars let alone trucks and tourist buses coming the other way. The other challenge is the myriad of masochistic pushbike riders struggling in pain to get up to the top or the equally mad ones coming down at break-neck speeds and taking up the whole road to get around the numerous hairpins.

Fortunately, one wasn’t compelled to take unreasonable risks and on occasions I certainly enjoyed just sitting behind slower vehicles and admiring the spectacular views. I can’t recall a more exhilarating experience than getting to the top and then looking back down the valley at the fine ribbon of road we had just mastered without crashing or killing any cyclists. I was that excited that I didn’t even feel the cold despite the fact that there was still plenty of snow around.

Then we were off down the other side with more spectacular views to Ponte di Legno where we stopped for another delicious lunch: Second Day Lunch Menu - Salad of river’s prawn tails and cherry tomatoes + -Smoked salmon with salad of fennel and oranges + Warm salad of octopus with potatoes and Taggiasca olives + Beef tartar with vinaigrette dressing + -“Bresaola” with mushrooms in oil and -Melon + Grilled vegetables + Panzanella + Pasta arrabbiata + Chocolate and peers cake.

Then after lunch we continued back to Meran via Fraviano, Fondo and Tesimo through more wonderful driving roads and scenery. That evening we wandered through the streets of Meran to another exquisite dinner: Second Evening Dinner - Restaurant Sissi: Menu: Flüssige Pizza (Es sieht zwar aus wie ein Eigelb, sind aber “Peperoni in Bagna-Caoda”) + Der roh marinierte Lachs mit Lachskaviar Die hausgemachten “Maltagliati” mit Geflügelragout und Haselnüssen + Die geschmorten Kalbswangen in Lagreinsauce + Moderne Apfelstrufdel + Passiofruchtkaviar mit Mangoeis und Mandelnmilch.

Day Three dawned as another beautiful day with us all anticipating the roads and views of the actual Dolomites which up until now we had only glimpsed.

Words just fail me to describe the magnificence of this region and the following photos may give you some idea.

More wonderful winding roads and I never tired of the wonderful way in which the PDK gearbox selected the right gear every time and the aural delights of the engine on the up and down shifts. I even experimented with manually changing gear with the paddle-shifts but soon discovered I couldn’t improve on what the gearbox did automatically.

I even discovered that it was quicker through the uphill winding sections with ‘Sport’ mode switched off as the car maintained better corner speed by not changing down mid-corner and only when I accelerated out of the apexes. The next series of photos I believe sums up how much I was enjoying myself.

And of course there was another magnificent lunch in Cortina d’Ampezo: Third Day Lunch - Hotel Ancora: - Menu: Warm Quiche with Belgian Endive, “Montasio” Cheese and Bacon served with Parmesan Sauce + Green “Spaetzle” (Typical small Spinach Dumplings) with smoked Ham + smoked “Ricotta” Cheese and Poppy Seeds in Ampezzo Style + Spit-roasted Shank flavoured with Spices and “Sauvignon” Wine Roasted Potatoes with Leeks + Warm Puff-Pastry stuffed with Apples and served with Vanilla Sauce.

After lunch we continued our enthusiastic meanderings back to our base and final night in Meran. Dinner on this evening was even more exceptional than the previous meals with it being held at Castel (Hotel) Fragsburg.

This hotel was situated high on a hill overlooking Meran and on the beautiful clear summer evening gave us a fantastic vista of Meran and the surrounding countryside. It was also an ideal opportunity for a group photo and another evening of fine dining.

Third Night Dinner - Castel Fragsburg: Menu: - Glas Prosecco und Häppchen + Angebratenes Carpaccio vom Laugenrind an Feldsalat, + 8 Monate gereifter Bergkäse und Tomatendressing + Tortelli mit Gartenbasilikum gefüllt auf Ofenpaprika, Burrata aus Apulien und Schüttelbrotkrümel + Geangelter Wolfsbarsch an sautiertem Senfkohl, Kräuterkartoffeln und Oliven-Hollandaise + Bananenschnitte mit Eiscreme von der Erdnuss und marinierten Brombeeren.

Day Four arrived with more beautiful Merano weather, however, a sort of melancholy had set in as this was now our last day of Porsche driving bliss. Nonetheless, I was excited as I had negotiated with our group leader Johanna that we swap cars and I get an opportunity to test out the new Macan Turbo all the way from Meran back to Munich.

Well I soon discovered why Johanna was so hard to keep up with on the previous days. Despite being and feeling slightly bigger than the Carrera it offered the same amount of poise, feel, and possibly slightly more performance.

I was impressed by the smooth (no turbo lag) and abundant power and the imperceptible gear changes from the PDK transmission. With smooth power delivery in every gear I often had to look at the dash indicator to see which gear I was in. The electricassisted steering was precise and had good feel, however, not quite the same level of tactile feeling as the Carrera. The brakes were also excellent but a bit ‘grabby’ rather than the smooth progressive feel of the Carrera. Also, the Macan did not offer the same aural rewards as the Carrera, that is the exhaust note was more subdued. However, I understand this will be rectified when a Sports Exhaust option will become available next year. Definitely an option to tick.

I was assigned to the tail of the group but I had no problem keeping up with the Carreras in all conditions including the 200+ km/h spurts along the autobahn.

For those PCNSW members who have ordered one I believe you will have a very enjoyable and practical car as it feels every bit a Porsche.

Our last lunch/meal together was yet another wonderful fare at the “Marktrestaurant “ in Mittenwald; Fourth Day Lunch Menu: Berbauernravoli/ Röstzwiebelsud/ Bergkäse + Filet vom Weide Ox/ Schmorrkartoffelpüree/ Shi-Takepilze/ Olivenjus + Pistazienbiskuit/ weißes Mousse/ Alpenkaramelleis.

We finally and sadly arrived back in Munich and reluctantly handed back our keys to Johanna, Stephan and Christian and bid farewell to our new found friends from the Tour.

Conclusion: The Porsche Travel Club Tour of the Dolomites is a must-do for anyone who loves driving Porsches along challenging roads through beautiful scenery and a bit of fine dining on the side. I finished of my day in Munich by catching the train into the centre of Munich and just enjoying the ambience of a beautiful German summer evening and see the local ‘bikie gang’ assemble in Marienplatz.

I woke next morning still excited by my Porsche experience but somewhat deflated knowing I now had to return to my rental Volvo V40 (which by the way was cheaper to leave parked in Munich for four days instead of stopping and starting a new rental – go figure?). I set off for Stuttgart to see the Porsche Museum and pleased to find the autobahn quite empty as trucks are not allowed on the roads on Sundays – what a great idea!

I arrive at the Museum to be pleasantly surprised to find my ‘dream’ Speed Yellow Cayman S at the front door. Inside among the many great exhibits I found out where David Withers got the idea for the colour scheme for his gorgeous 2.7l RS Replica but disappointed to find the styling of future Porsche racing cars leaving a lot to be desired. Another reason why I prefer Classic car racing to modern categories of motor racing.

I I also had time to visit the Mercedes-Benz Musuem in Stuttgart that same day and then spend the evening with my friend Sanyi and his girlfriend watching Germany win the World Cup Soccer. I just love seeing people get excited.

I then took two days to drive from Stuttgart to Toulouse stopping overnight at the cute little town of Limonest, just outside Lyon, before venturing onto my seventh Bucket List item which was to see and drive over the Millau Viaduct. The French certainly know how to build stylish bridges.

I then completed my Bucket List goals by driving onto Toulouse and spending the last four days as ‘bohemian’ time with my nephew Marton and his girlfriend Sylvia. This was a magical finish to a very successful plan to tick off a number of important items on my Bucket List, all of which I can recommend and would happily do again.

New Black Edition 911 and Boxster Models

Australia. Porsche Cars Australia (PCA) heads into the 2016 Model Year with two new sports car variants in the 911 Black Edition and Boxster Black Edition.

The new Black Editions bring additional standard specification over the base cars in the respective ranges and, as the names suggest, are available exclusively with black exterior.

The Black Editions are a perfect complement to the very successful 911 and Boxster GTS models introduced in the 2015 Model Year.

Lighter, more economical, faster: the new 911 GT3 R

Australia. Porsche has unveiled its latest 911 customer race car, the 911 GT3 R, to be used in GT3 championships around the world. Based on the 911 GT3 RS production sports car, the new GT3 specification race car has more than 368 kW (500 hp) with special attention paid to its lightweight design, better aerodynamic efficiency, reducing consumption, improved handling, further optimised safety as well as lowering service and spare parts costs.

Adopted from its production sibling, the 911 GT3 R features the distinctive double-bubble roof, and the wheelbase which had been lengthened by 8.3 centimetres compared to the previous generation. This ensures a more balanced weight distribution and more predictable handling particularly in fast corners in comparison to the previous GT3 R. By applying systematic lightweight solutions for the body, add-on parts, and suspension, the engineers significantly optimised the centre of gravity position of the GT3 R compared to the predecessor model. The lightweight body design of the 911 GT3 RS production sports car featuring intelligent aluminium-steel composite construction has proven to be the ideal basis for

the race car. The roof, front cover and fairing, wheel arches, doors, side and tail sections as well as the rear cover are made of particularly light carbon-fibre composite material (CFRP).

All windows – and for the first time even the windscreen – consist of polycarbonate.

Powering the new 911 GT3 R is a cutting-edge four-litre flat-six unit which is largely identical to the high-performance production engine of the road-legal 911 GT3 RS. Direct petrol injection, which operates at pressures up to 200 bar, as well as variable valve timing technology ensure a particularly efficient use of fuel.

Moreover, the normally-aspirated engine offers significantly better driveability and a broader usable rev range. Power from the rear engine is transferred to the 310 mm rear wheels via a Porsche sequential six-speed constant-mesh gearbox. As in the GT road-going models of the 911, the driver changes gears via shift paddles positioned on the steering wheel.

The aerodynamics of the 911 GT3 R also follows the example of the road car. The distinctive wheel arch air vents on the front fairings increase downforce at the front axle. Measuring

two metres in width by 40-centimetres in depth, the rear wing lends aerodynamic balance.

From its 911 RSR big brother, the GT3 R has adopted the concept of the centrally-positioned radiator. By eliminating the side radiators, the position of the centre of gravity was improved, the radiator is better protected against collision damage, and the venting of hot air through louvers in the front cover was enhanced.

The brake system of the 911 GT3 R also underwent further modifications and, thanks to increased stiffness and more precise control of the ABS, is even better suited to long distance racing. At the front axle, six-piston aluminium monobloc racing brake callipers combined with ventilated and grooved steel brake discs with a diameter of 380 millimetres ensure outstanding braking performances.

Fitted at the rear axle are four-piston callipers and discs measuring 372 millimetres.

Another development focus was on the safety features of the GT3 R. The capacity of the further-reinforced FT3 safety fuel cell was increased by twelve litres to now hold 120 litres, with the tank now featuring

a fuel cut-off safety valve. The doors and the side windows can be removed, and the escape hatch in the roof is now larger. In the event of an accident, the new racing bucket seat offers pilots even better protection.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 R can be ordered immediately for 429,000 Euro plus country-specific VAT and will be delivered from December 2015.

The new 911 GT3 R will be eligible for GT3 racing in Australia, which includes the Bathurst 12 Hour endurance race and the Australian GT Championship. Eligibility for Australian events will be determined by each event’s or category’s vehicle model year eligibility.

Sunday Drive Strathpine – Eumundi - Noosa Hill Climb

We had a beautiful sunny Sunday’s drive ahead of us.

Upon arriving at the Coffee Club at Strathpine we met up with new members Arthur and Trish in their dark green Boxster.

First order of business after introductions – Coffee – and soon after a whole lot of other club members starting arriving, ordering coffee – hot chocolate – some even fitted in a quick breakfast.

It still amazes me when you park a bunch of Porsches together, the public swam around admire & photograph.

In all we had 17 cars, including 924 – 944 – Cayman, early 911 through to latest 991, 930 & 997 Turbo, 996 GT- 3 – 997 GTS & several Boxsters.

Also included in our travelling band were a couple of ‘Family’ cars, BMW – M series, a Mercedes & a quick Red Golf.

After instructions handed out we ‘hit’ the road, over to Dayboro and had a great run up over Mt. Mee with stunning views across to the coast & west over the ranges.

cross Park, it was explained to me that one or two Porsches and one of the ‘family cars’ had to make a quick stop just before Woodford as Mother Nature insisted on several occupations a ‘pit-stop’ was required.

In having such a great run to Mary Cain-Cross Park – many came to me during our short stop, saying that even though they had driven some of the roads in the area, not all the one’s I had picked out which made for a great morning drive so far.

After most had swapped stories on the drive so far and ‘nature-breaks’ had been attended too we then travelled on over to Montville – through Mapleton – down the ‘hill’ into Nambour, onto the Bruce Highway and headed north to Eumundi to have lunch at the Imperial - Lionheart Hotel.

Unfortunately for some it appears they made a contribution to the “Police-man’s Ball” – where speed signs where not obvious & Highway patrol were very enthusiastic.

But once arriving at our lunch stop – staff directed us to the up-stairs balcony where five tables were set up for us, to enjoy time together.

Soon after with drinks in hand and lunch ordered all agreed that the drive and in the company of Porsche friends, how else would you like to spend a lovely Sunday out.

As lunch drew to close most headed back to Brisbane, some of us headed over to the Noosa Hill Climb.

We got to see some action before there was a delay in proceedings as a 600 + HP Cobra had an argument with the hill & lost.

I did see the all-conquering Datsun 120Y that our illustrious President raced against last year – again had beaten all comers in his class and was being packed up for the next meeting.

Having waited to see the Cobra come back and soon after another car argued with the ‘Hill” & another stop to ‘fun & games’ so we decided to head on home.
