PRESIDENTS PROSE

After a very relaxing break in Cartagena Colombia, then up the Amazon River and on to the Galapagos Islands it is time to get my head in to gear and start answering emails, phone calls and texts. Having done a few cards and sorted information for some competitors I know a few went to the 12 hour and participated in the Porsche organised Drive the Track, the Targa events already run and Targa Tasmania coming up so it is off to a flying start!.

2018 is going to be a huge year for Porsche Club Qld, a number of meetings have been held for motorsport in recent weeks, extra meetings for Porsches’ 70th Birthday event and the year is only just starting.

Motorsport rounds for PCQ have been increased to 13 for this year, 4 non speed events and 9 speed events along with some minor changes to the rules wording and the inclusion of some new categories. Our new categories include a regularity group run at each of our stand alone events. This category is great for those members who do not want to go out and push their cars but want to have the excitement of being out on the track. Select a time you think it will take you to do a lap of the track and circulate as close to that as possible is the idea. You can go as slow or as fast as you feel comfortable that your car, or yourself, are not being pushed. Of course there will be a minimum and a maximum time set so that you aren’t too much of a turtle or a hare!!. Safety is always our foremost concern for everyone.

Our second new category is a women’s and juniors category.

We would really love to see more ladies come to enjoy the track days and enjoy their cars. Porsche themselves have always stood behind women in motorsport and junior drivers. The inclusion of this category was made to encourage women and junior drivers to participate without feeling they would be in the way, be too slow, cause track rage etc and feel safer with similarly experienced drivers on the track together. I know many ladies have said they would love to come and have a go but felt a little intimidated by more experienced drivers so this is your chance to come and have some fun, no pressure, no pushing beyond your comfort zones, a group all to yourselves!!.

I know my daughter says this is truly the most fun you can ever have, legally, in your car. Emily has participated in sprints for a number of years and enjoys it so much that she has driven the PCA Organised Tasmania Targa Tour, Bathurst regularity at Easter, Rennsport held at Sydney Motorsport Park and all of the Qld tracks. As for the juniors, we had a few driving a number of years ago, our two included. It is a perfect time for them to learn how to drive in safety on the track. We are very security conscious and there is no “racing” or close driving allowed. We found it helps their response time, car control and certainly their 6

confidence with a little respect thrown in. It is time to give it a go!!!! This category will also be run at our stand alone events throughout the year and is not Porsche cars only allowed to be driven.

Other events that are being planned are days at the Mount Cotton Driver Training Centre skid pan and small vehicle manoeuvring area. I am just getting together the required paperwork and strategies we have to do to hire the venue before I try to book dates. These days are great fun; help with car control, understanding the behaviour of your car under different conditions, peripheral vision, looking forward as well as safe braking. Keep your eye out for their inclusion in our events calendar.

The Porsche 70th Birthday event is still in the process of final organisation. We have had a hiccup with Southbank who do not wish to host the event so a change of venue for the Saturday morning has already had to be done. Please keep June 9 2018 available on your calendar for this gala event as a lot of work is going in to make this one amazing evening. It will also be a night of fundraising with proceeds going to men’s health programmes Beyond Blue and Prostate Cancer.

Finally we have new merchandise.!!!!!! We changed suppliers after a firm promise of better quality, quicker turnaround, better price and more choice. Price is comparable but if product better quality and quicker turnaround we thought it was worth a go.

After 3 months we have finally got half of our order. Needless to say the turnaround isn’t all that wonderful. We have added some new items to our store along with the usual short (in 2 colours) and long sleeved polos, which we are not happy with (in black). Caps have been ordered but unsure of their progress though we do still have the light blue caps in stock.

Other new items will be added as we go along so keep an eye on the website and magazine and Greg Turnham will be only too happy to service your order!!!.

This edition of the magazine is always a hard one for the editor as the end of the year events are included in the December January issue and we haven’t quite started the events for the new year so content is always an issue. I know Peter was not happy with the production of the last magazine however I believe he does a wonderful job, often under extreme pressure to meet deadlines.

Often he has to wield a huge stick to get us all in order and get our articles in so with everything else he has to sort Peter you do a mighty fine job!!

Maybe our members could submit articles on their cars, rebuilds, anything about Porsche that might be of interest to help him out...

So with our bigger motorsport calendar, some popup events I don’t yet wish to put out there, but will be fantastic events if all the stars line up, Greg McWhinney’s usual fantastic social calendar, club nights and tech nights we are in for one amazing 2018 so I hope you find something which excites you and you get what you want from being a member.

MOTORSPORT NEWS An enormous amount of planning has gone into the 2018 Motorsport Programme. We have 13 rounds scheduled for this year. It has been more than 10 years since we had that many rounds in one year. The best part of the programme for 2018 is that there is something for everyone; we have tried to cater to the vast needs and requirements of our members. At our Rounds 2,4,7 & 10, which are our sole hire of the track events, we will be providing a host of different products such as a Novice Only Single Sprint, Ladies Only Sprint, Passenger Rides and Happy Laps. These are designed to provide a track experience without the whole daunting feeling that is often associated with any sprint or track day.

Inter Club Challenge 2018

After a very successful 2017, more clubs are joining the Inter Club Challenge competition with 13 clubs now to participate in 2018. With such a diverse range of cars and performance levels, and with some of the smaller clubs having only a few motorsport competitors, minor changes have been made to the ICC Rules to make it a closer and fairer competition. At a Club level, each club will be able to drop one round from the competition, ie if there are 9 rounds, only the points from the best 8 results will count. Drivers will be able to drop 2 rounds, ie the points from their best 7 rounds in a 9 round competition.

This will give those drivers who can’t attend every round a chance to do well in the competition.

Unchanged are the points awarded at each event. The first placed driver gets 70 points, 2nd place 69, 3rd place 68 points etc. The club results are determined by the points from the top 4 placed drivers from each club. The club which amasses the most driver points is awarded 20 points for the round, 2nd placed club 19 and 3rd placed club 18 points etc. For a club to do well in each round it is advantageous to have at least 4 drivers competing. PCQ was the only club in 2017 to have a full team of at least 4 drivers in every round, and this certainly helped PCQ to win the ICC. Apart from club and outright drivers points there are 2 other categories, road registered cars and for the older cars, a class for pre-1986 road registered cars.

As usual the calendar has a broad range of events hosted by clubs involved in the ICC. Once again the PCQ July sprint at Morgan Park will be a round as well as our March 17 sprint at QR. So far 8 ICC rounds have been locked in, and it is hoped that a host club and suitable date can be found for the Navigation Run to make 9 rounds for 2018. Six of these events are also rounds of our PCQ Motorsport Championship.

The ICC events are ideal for any Porsche model including stock standard road registered cars regardless of age and are a great starting point for any member wanting to have a go at motorsport . There will always be help available for anyone doing their first event. In 2017 there were over 200 drivers competing, many first timers, and the cars ranged from a humble and much loved Morris Minor through to Carrera Cup Porsches.

SOCIAL 2018 review The main thing is we work to provide a range of social events across the calendar year.

We’ll have two Breakfast runs this year, the first one in Brisbane, a Mystery run (Sunday Feb-25th , sadly you are too late) and one to Byron Bay Cars and Coffee (Sunday 23rd Sept.)

The 2017 Christmas party at Mooloolaba Surf Club was a lot of fun and a great success.

I’m now planning the 2018 Christmas Party, please let me know your thoughts on what style (themed or smart casual) and location. This year will be Brisbane CBD and remember, it’s your club and the committee and I need your input.

This year will see one or two social drives during the year to arrive at PCQ motorsport events so members can see the event and feel more engaged with the motorsport side of club membership.

We met at CB Mott Park car-park just off Logan road in Holland Park, we had several new club members and motorsport members who attended their first PCQ social event, which was great.

We arevlooking to have a Christmas in July again. Last year we tied it in with the Motorsport at Warwick in July with accommodation and somewhere we could all fit in to eat.

We are working on a couple of new ideas so stay tuned for more details. Last year was very popular so remember to book early when dates and venue are announced.

As a committee we have decided to add ‘Meet the newbies’ to help welcome new members to the club and these will be held a couple of time across the year at the Coffee Club, Racecourse road Ascot and Cars and Coffee dates for Brisbane – Gold Coast and Byron Bay. The main focus for the club in 2018 is the worldwide Porsche Club June-9-10 Porsche 70th celebrations, PCQ is organising 70 Porsches for display in the Brisbane CBD – followed by a Black-tie dinner at the Gold Coast and another 70 Porsches on display on the Gold Coast with details to follow.

If you have ideas where you think the club should go, or visit or experience please feel free to send them into me and we can look to add them to the calendar.

A great selection of Porsche’s, 924 – 944, with an example of a 911 from each era, 70’s – 80’s – 90’s – 2000’s and the latest 991and a lone Boxster, our 11 car convoy made for a great sight.

If you attend any social or motorsport PCQ event please feel free to provide photos and write stories on club events and you can get to see yourself published in the club magazine.

With conversations following I handed out the directions complete with road maps to our ‘mystery breakfast venue’, the Grand View Hotel at Cleveland Point.

Street and onto Grand View Hotel.

We managed to pretty much stay as a group which attracted plenty of looks from the public.

At first when we pulled up and parked across the road from the Grand View – as it turned out we were the first guest’s for the Grand View and were then able to move all the Porsches into the side lane car park.

I’d like to thank everyone who attended for the conversations, friendships and laughs that flowed around both tables.

Hopefully we’ll get to see you at the next social event.

Cars & Coffee Gold Coast

anuary 2018 has come and we have started off the new year with a resounding bang! Cars & Coffee enjoyed a fantastic showing during January with a whole host of unique and wonderful automobiles. It was such a great turn out that cars were parked outside the venue. We had hot rods, luxury, sports cars, military vehicles, classics, future classics and all in between.

The Car of the Meet went to a highly modified however absolutely tasteful Hot Rod. The Greeks certainly would have approved of the vehicle as it was resplendent in metallic blue contrasted with white. Its open engine bay reflected the beaming sun with its mirror finish.

Featuring a custom made gear lever and steering wheel which matched the metallic blue precisely, I’m certain the owner had countless hours of effort and very exacting taste.

Parked right opposite this pristine example was another hot rod which couldn’t be more polar opposite. It would classify as a “rat rod”, it was buckets of rust moulded together to form what looked like a model T, each panel was mismatched and it belched smoke to the high heavens, but I suppose opposites attract. We had another wonderful showing of Porsche’s with 4 present, a 997 Turbo S, a 996 Cab, a 944 Cab and a 928S4. Ford was another highly represented marque with plenty of its 70’s mega yachts present, 10

Joining them was a stunning Buick Riviera in pristine white leather interior and to top it all off was a Chevrolet BelAir converted UTE! Another common marque, albeit nothing common at all was Rolls Royce with a splendid Cloud III, 2 Corniche Drop Heads and a Bentley Spur. One of my favourites were Clubbies. These are essentially Lotus 7’s in its various iterations, we had 3 of them from old to new and the best part was, they all looked the same, however one must be astounded by the power to weight ratio. Speaking of power, several Nissan Skyline GTR’s led the Japanese contingent and have always been a crowd favourite.

Several BMC special’s were there in their lively colours as always like the sprightly Yellow Sprite, 2 Green Mini’s,

a Red Vauxhall Velox, a Red Morris UTE, a Yellow Vauxhall UTE, a Blue Morris UTE, a Green Stag and low and behold Lyon’s favourite Jaguar MK2 & Daimler 250. 3 Wonderful swedes rounded off the European experience with a 144, a 1800 Estate and a 122S Coupe. As always honourable mentions go to the 2 lime green Ford Focus RS’s, Citroen Traction Avant, Panther Lima, Holden Calais, Aston Martin V12, Vietnam era MUTT, Austin A40, JBA, Corvette Stingray, BRZ, Holden HRT, BMW M5, 2 Chrysler 300C’s, BMW 320 Bauer and MX5 Miata.

ebruary Many have spoken to me over the course of the event of the simply amazing array of vehicles which turn up each meet and the good thing is that virtually each month it is a different variety, after all isn’t variety the spice of life? This month was no exception. We had all sorts of makes, models, era’s, big and small, cars for the masses and cars of limited production turn up. The coveted car of the meet went to a Ferrari 488, the only one ever produced. This was

have already corrupted many a young/old mind. Once again the most represented marque was Porsche with 8 vehicles and

a 70th Anniversary Edition so it had plenty of extra goodies. It was simply gorgeous and had carbon ceramic brakes the size of any standard car wheel. Having 1 Ferrari is great, having 2 is wonderful, but having 2 limited editions – simply mind blowing.

The good folks of GCAAC organised a tantalising BBQ breakfast of Bacon and Egg Muffins. Plenty of attendees got tucked right into it and satisfied their hunger physically and metaphorically for cars at the same time. This will be an ongoing addition by the Club to raise funds for their 50th Anniversary this year.

Porsche Centre GC were once again present with a beautiful 718 Boxster in resplendent white. They were giving away Porsche posters which were very well received by all. I’m sure those posters

a magnificent showing of 928’s with 3, a 996, a 997, a 911 Targa, a 944 Cab and a Boxster. All the 928’s had their frog eyes up peering at the world. Speaking of frog eyes, 2 stunning yellow bug eye’s complemented each other well, they were a Austin Healey and a Clubman. Several other British marques were the 5 Rolls Royces, namely 2 Silver Cloud III’s, a Corniche DHC, a Silver Cloud I

and Silver Spur. The BMC specials were Vauxhall Velox Cab and Ute, Commer, Ute, Mini Ute, Austin A40, Morris Ute, Triumph Stag, Daimler 250, MG A and rounding off with several MG B’s. In the corner we had 3 generations of BMW M3’s. It was such a spectacular sight in Red, White and Blue. The contingent of Volvo’s was mighty fine with 2 1800’s, a 144 and a 242. A couple of Chevrolet Ute’s were present but had a wonderful patina about them.

One was fitted with air shocks and fully rusted out and the other was painted in a rust motif. As for the Americans, they were gloriously represented by some real stunners such as the Ford Cruiser, Ford Galaxie Convertible, Silver Corvette Convertible, White Corvette Stingray Targa and the mighty Buick Riviera. The Buick was so enjoying itself that when its owners wanted to leave it decided not to start. After several well-meaning knocks to the starter motor and my offer of calling the RACQ (sacrilege apparently), it purred to life.

As always honourable mentions go to the stunning 80’s Cadillac Seville, Citroen Traction Avant, Audi S3 RS in Darth Vader Black, VW GTI’s, Supra’s, Tesla Model S, Chrysler Valiant, Rally Spec Holden, Alfa Romeo, Ford Mustang, Beautiful Holden with a 350, and last but not least, Honda’s answer to Ferrari – the NSX. Porsche Classic supplies classic parts from a 3D printer

Innovation meets tradition: Rarely required parts created using modern manufacturing processes Stuttgart. "No longer available" – for collectors of rare classic cars, the unavailability of spare parts can quickly lead to problems. In the worst case scenario, the car may even be forced out of action. Porsche Classic, the division of Porsche dedicated to classic vehicles, has come up with a solution to this problem: namely, producing extremely rare parts that are only needed in small quantities using 3D printers. All parts that are produced using the 3D printing process meet the requirements in terms of absolute fidelity to the original specifications – both from a technical and a visual perspective.

The Porsche Classic range currently includes some 52,000 parts. If a certain spare part is no longer in stock or stock is dwindling, it is reproduced using the original tools. For larger quantities, production may require the use of new tools.

However, ensuring the supply of spare parts that are only required in very limited numbers sometimes poses a major challenge, even for the experts. Producing small batches using new tools would be largely inefficient. Before embarking on a project to produce a particular component, Porsche Classic always evaluates various manufacturing processes.

As the quality of “additive” manufacturing processes continues to improve with generally decreasing costs, this form of manufacturing presents an economic alternative for the production of small quantities. Say, for example, the release lever for the clutch on the Porsche 959 is no longer available.

This component made from grey cast iron is subject to very high quality requirements, but is in very low demand – not least because only 292 of these super sports cars were ever produced. The only manufacturing process worth considering would be selective laser melting. To manufacture the release lever, a layer of powdery tool steel less than 0.1 millimetres thick is applied to a processing plate in a computerised process. In an inert atmosphere, a high-energy light beam then melts the powder in the desired locations to create a steel layer.

Thus, the complete three-dimensional component is produced, layer by layer. Both the pressure test with a load of almost three tonnes and the subsequent tomographic examination for internal faults were passed by the printed release lever with flying colours. The practical tests with the lever installed in a test vehicle and extensive driving tests confirm the impeccable quality and function of the component.

Due to the consistently positive results received to date, Porsche is currently manufacturing eight other parts using 3D printing. The parts in question are steel and alloy parts produced using the selective laser melting process, and plastic components manufactured using an SLS printer. SLS stands for selective laser sintering, a process where the material is heated to just below melting point and the remaining energy is applied through a laser to fuse the plastic powder at a selected point. All parts are subject to the quality requirements of the original production period as a minimum, though they usually meet higher standards. Accuracy in terms of size and fit is ensured by performing tests with the part installed. Depending on the area of application, plastic parts made of various

materials as in the original must be resistant to oils, fuels, acids and light.

Porsche Classic is currently testing whether 3D printing is suitable for the production of a further 20 components. The benefits: Three-dimensional design data or a 3D scan of the component is a sufficient basis to commence production. The components can be produced on demand if needed, thereby eliminating tool and storage costs.

On our Christmas drive

12 Jan2018 Our Visit to Greg Lovett On our Christmas drive from Brisbane to Adelaide in our Porsche Cayenne S, we stopped to visit Greg and Nelda Lovett in Mansfield, country Victoria.

Greg purchased my previous 997 Turbo which I owned for 3 years.

It turned out that Greg was the original owner and just wanted the car back.

The first stop was to see my old car again, Greg had been busy modifying it (as if it wasn’t quick enough already).

Wider Rims and tyres, larger air intake, bigger intercoolers, honed out the original Turbos and fitted larger vanes and some mods to the gearbox to handle the now 600 Plus HP Mezger engine. Greg does all his own engine work in his well set up workshop.

Next a tour of his cars in garage No.1, a red 997-GT2, a white 964 RS, a Silver 993-Turbo/GT2 and a Yellow 996 Turbo.

Then we drove up to his new house with a brilliant view of the Blue Mountains.

We met Nelda and sat down to cool off with cold drinks and cake, then a short drive to garage No.2 and 3.

One area had 4 aeroplanes including a Bi-Plane, the next area with workshop and more cars.

This was his racing department, where cars are worked on ready for the next race meeting.

Cars on site include a rare genuine 993-GT2 Repsol sponsored factory Le Mans car, a white 996-GT2 and a 2001 Green 996 RS, these are all track only racing cars.

It was a great pleasure to view all these great cars and to meet the man himself.

What is Motorkhana?

“Motorkhana”: a slower and more compact event than a Khanacross. It is a low-cost form of motorsport, unique to Australia and New Zealand but similar to autotesting in the UK and Ireland and somewhat similar to autocross in the US. It involves manoeuvring a car through tight tests as quickly as possible – one car at a time – on either dirt or bitumen surfaces.

This usually requires sliding and spinning the car accurately while maintaining speed through the test course.

Each test takes from 15 to 60 seconds to complete and is defined by flags. Hitting flags or going the wrong way incur time penalties which are added to the total time. A day’s competition – an event – usually includes 8 to 12 tests. Vehicle speed rarely exceeds 60 km/h (37 mph) but the tightness of the tests ensures the driver is kept very busy.

Awards are made to the driver with the lowest total time in each class. Classes separate production cars from specials and large production cars from small production cars. There are often classes for female drivers, and for junior drivers as young as 12.

Most motorkhanas are run on bitumen or concrete while some can be, but rarely, on dirt, grass or mud.

Competition licences and entry fees are cheap and vehicle maintenance is low so motorkhana is probably the most affordable motor sport for cars in Australia.

PCQ Round 1 –25th February 2018 Sprint Lakeside Park

With no event in January, the first scheduled round for the 25 February 2018 was certainly keenly anticipated and well supported to the tune of having 4 entries on the “Stand By List”.

The weather in the South East corner of Queensland started to turn nasty on the Wednesday prior to the event and then started to ramp up. With heavy rain on Saturday morning, we were all convinced that a cancellation was imminent. The track managers, QR were not so keen to cancel and on late Saturday morning declared that “in all likelihood, the event would still proceed”.

Our participants starting trickling into the venue around 11am on Sunday, under a bright sun shine, a little cloud but no sign of rain. I made the fatal mistake of thinking we would be okay, yet it seemed like only moments after I had that thought that the clouds closed and the heavens opened.

At approximately 2pm, the event was cancelled.

PCQ Motorsport Committee and Queensland Raceways are working together to re-schedule the event to another date, probably in May. Stay tuned.

Porsche at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed

Goodwood has announced that Porsche is to be the honoured marque at the Festival of Speed, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary. The announcement coincides with the sports car manufacturer celebrating the 70th anniversary of the creation of its very first sports car – the 356.

“Porsche has been one of our most loyal and enthusiastic partners, supporting the Festival of Speed since 1995, and the Revival since 2010,” said The Duke of Richmond and Gordon.

“This year Porsche will become the first manufacturer to create the central display at the Festival for the third time, underlining the huge contribution from this iconic manufacturer of worldbeating racing cars and road cars."

History repeating Some of the most iconic photographs of Porsche cars have been of a 356 up a snowy Alp, with skis strapped to the roof. Sixty years on, the 911 Turbo S wanted some of the limelight.

356, 911 Turbo S, l-r, Alps, 2018, Porsche AG There is something so very right about the image of a Porsche with skis on the roof. Even in the earliest years of the company, people strapped their wooden skis to their 356 or 911 and headed up into the Alps. Cameras captured these moments for posterity – pictures that have almost come to symbolise the jet-set years of the 1950s and ‘60s.

It was this that was at the forefront of fasion photographer Marcus Hoffmann’s mind when he planned a ski-wear shoot in the Swiss Alps. An image from the Porsche Museum’s archive that had appeared on the Porsche Drivetribe feed had caught his eye, and he wanted to see if he could re-capture its glamour today with a 911 Turbo S. The Turbo S: a distance-devouring crosser of countries

Oblivious to the occasional vehicle abandoned at the side of the road, the Turbo S’s computers and differentials shuffled traction and steering inputs between all four wheels, slip being dealt with before it even developed. And the Crayon-coloured sportscar had reinvented itself yet again, this time into a faithful friend in truly nasty winter conditions.

The perfect day to get to work The following morning dawned bright and sunny on the stunning mountain scenery – the perfect day for Marcus and model Giulia Carla Beskid to get to work. The oiled bamboo surface of the skis looked for all the world like a carving version of the wooden skis of old while the Turbo S turned heads as it drove across the piste and, at one point, backed up the reverse of a ski jump in front of a restaurant full of surprised holidaymakers.

With dozens of outfits captured, and hundreds of shots in the bag, the final task was to try to recreate the image from the archive. Sixty years on, a Porsche with skis on the roof still looks so very right.

The trip down to Switzerland started somewhat less glamorously in the reality of a Stuttgart rush hour, but the 911 was comfortably up to the task. The traffic crawled along and the Turbo S crawled along with it, no less tractable nor trickier to place than the family hatchbacks surrounding it. Heated seats and steering wheel kept its occupants warm. Apple CarPlay kept them entertained. And then the traffic cleared.

The Turbo S effortlessly transformed itself into a distance-devouring crosser of countries. Even though it was shod in speed-limited winter tyres, it made safe and rapid progress down everquieter autobahns.

Porsche, Michelin announce unprecedented junior driver support in 2018 Porsche Cars Australia and Michelin Australia have joined forces to launch one of Australian motorsport’s most extensive driver development programmes, providing total benefits of up to $300,000.

The new Porsche Michelin Junior Programme Australia will support seven young drivers across Australia’s two Porsche one-make series – Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia and Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia – providing all Michelin Juniors financial support by way of entry fee support and an allocation of Michelin race tyres, along with access to training, mentorship and education throughout the racing season.

The Porsche Michelin Junior Programme Australia will consist of two teams – the GT3 Cup Challenge Junior Team, consisting of three drivers, and the four-driver Carrera Cup Junior Team.

The three Michelin Juniors drivers who will be part of the GT3 Cup Challenge Junior Team will be selected through a panel of judges – with nominations open on Monday February 12, 2018. While the Carrera Cup Junior Team will consist of the four eligible drivers already entered in the championship.

The pinnacle of the Junior Programme will see the highest ranked Michelin Junior in Carrera Cup at the time of nomination for the Porsche Motorsport Junior Programme Shootout receive the Jamey Blaikie Scholarship and be the Carrera Cup Australia nominee for the Shootout, with flights, accommodation and the Shootout opportunity itself covered by Porsche.

The Junior Programme offers a proven pathway from an entry into national level motor racing through to the opportunity of launching an international professional racing career.

“It’s exciting to offer this expanded driver development programme across our two Porsche one-make series,” said Porsche Cars Australia Motorsport Manager, Troy Bundy.

“In the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid we have a genuine pathway to help young Australian based drivers become racing professionals, from GT3 Cup Challenge, Carrera Cup and ultimately an opportunity to launch an international career in the Porsche Motorsport Junior Programme Shootout which, if successful, provides the opportunity to race in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. We have seen the proof of the programme’s success both locally in Matt Campbell and internationally with dual Le Mans winner Earl Bamber.

“It’s fantastic to have Michelin on board as the title partner of the Junior Programme. Porsche and Michelin understand the

importance of such a programme in providing an opportunity for young local drivers. Michelin has been a long-time Carrera Cup tyre partner, so it’s tremendous to now not only confirm the brand as the GT3 Cup Challenge title partner but also to partner the brand in this great initiative.”

Vale Dan Gurney Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG mourns the death of Daniel Sexton Gurney. The racing driver and Formula 1 pilot died on January 14, 2018 at the age of 86. Porsche owes its only success as a vehicle manufacturer in the Formula 1 World Championship to Gurney, who won the 1962 French Grand Prix in Rouen in an eight cylinder Porsche 804. Just a week later Gurney led from start to finish to triumph at the Solitude racetrack near Stuttgart; his teammate Joakim Bonnier took second place to secure a one-two for the air-cooled Porsche Type 804 in front of its home crowd.

Driving appearances for the Swabian sports car manufacturer in 1961 and 1962 would leave lasting memories; as Gurney once reflected, "It was with Porsche that I really learned how to drive because they gave me cars that didn't constantly break down and I could lay down the kilometres faster than ever before."

Gurney was considered to be an all-round talent in the field of motorsport: The American enjoyed plenty of success throughout his career and was the first driver to win races in Formula 1, NASCAR and the IndyCar Series, as well as sports car races, including with his own team. With the invention of the "Gurney flap", he improved aerodynamic efficiency by adding a spoiler to the rear wing. He was also the first driver to spray champagne on the podium, inadvertently starting a tradition that is now imitated all around the world.

Porsche also helped him to find lifelong happiness in his private life in the 1960s when he married his wife Evi, the former German motor sports journalist and secretary to the Porsche Racing Manager Huschke von Hanstein.

Complex issues simply displayed

Augmented and virtual reality have opened up completely new perspectives for sales at Porsche – both for customers and the after sales area. While customers have the opportunity to explore the world of Porsche in even more depth and, most importantly, interactively, these futuristic technologies are helping service staff in Porsche’s workshops to get to grips with complex technical issues more easily.

The “Mission E Augmented Reality”, created during a collaboration with Google, is particularly exciting for customers.

This connection between the physical and digital worlds allows enthusiasts to get a sneak peek at the future of Porsche. The Mission E, Zuffenhausen’s first purely electric sports car, will be launched at the end of 2019. At brand pop-up stores or trade fairs, fans can already view interior and exterior details – either of the Mission E concept study itself or a scaled model – using an app and augmented reality. The intelligent application of augmented reality also makes it possible to display not only the animation of aerodynamics in X-ray mode, but also the complex drive and battery technologies. A further development step will enable the augmented reality experience to be accessed anywhere and at any time.

VR can up-skill employees in the After Sales department Meanwhile, Porsche is utilising the many possibilities offered by virtual reality (VR) to up-skill employees in the After Sales department. Complex technologies can be clearly demonstrated through the use of VR glasses. When wearing the glasses, the employee is immersed in a virtual workshop, where there are, for instance, several examples of the current Panamera 4 E-Hybrid.

With these vehicles, employees learn how to interact with the virtual models, explore the essential components of the highvoltage system and are taken through the precise repair sequence for a high-voltage battery, for example. A drone accompanies the employee in the virtual workshop. It takes on the role of trainer and gives advice on what actions to perform. Virtual learning provides practically limitless opportunities to gain knowledge about vehicle systems and functions. The VR glasses can, for example, provide a view of the electrical lines, which are hidden on the real vehicle. A further advantage is that employees can also learn delicate maintenance procedures virtually, without any risk. While VR training should never replace additional training on reallife vehicles, it can provide an ideal foundation to build upon.

An eye for mistakes

Porsche develops artificial neural networks for Production 4.0.

Porsche has developed a new solution for preventive maintenance: Artificial intelligence recognises noises and vibrations and uses deviations from normal behaviour to interpret machine errors.

In collaboration with the start-up iNDTact, the Porsche Digital Lab in Berlin has developed a system that recognises problems based on anomalies in vibrations and reports them accordingly.

This innovative solution utilises the vibrations that are generated by every moving system and every machine. They are as unique as a human fingerprint, which is why artificial intelligence can detect even the smallest anomalies.

Predictive maintenance is a core component of Industry 4.0. It involves servicing machines and systems proactively in order to minimise downtime. Unlike preventive maintenance, service intervals are not defined in advance but are determined and optimised using technology. Predictive maintenance therefore has many advantages over preventive or reactive approaches to maintenance. Total system failures can be reduced by continuously monitoring a machine’s current status.

The Porsche Tech Laboratory has identified various different applications for artificial intelligence, including the status of a connector during production, quality analysis of supplied parts and predictive maintenance.

Dynamic Bastion of Stability The 911 is not simply a sports car. It is the base from which the entire company operates.

There’s an oft-repeated anecdote from 1990: the setting is a technical seminar in Berlin for engineers in the automotive industry. During a break, two participants are talking about the Porsche 911. One of them, a leading engineer for a major carmaker from southern Germany, says: “If I had to improve that car, I wouldn’t have the foggiest idea. I think it would be incredibly difficult.” The other, a leading engineer at Porsche, regards his counterpart with incredulity—and says nothing.

It still elicits a chuckle from August Achleitner today when he thinks of his befuddlement back then in Berlin. Further developing the Porsche 911 has been his job for almost twenty years. Achleitner is the director of the 911 model line and is thus something like the keeper of the Porsche grail. “The heart of the company,” he calls the 911. If one were to strip down everything that bears a Porsche logo, that exemplifies and drives the company, to reveal the core of the brand, it would look like a 911. With its unmistakable flyline—the typical roof line— the 911’s style-defining basic form retains its freshness and trailblazing spirit even today.

It’s all about that sporty note The next 911, generation 992, will carry on that proud tradition.

“We know where we’re from and where we want to go,” says Achleitner. “The decisive factor is that the 911 generates a driving feeling that no other car can impart.” That’s not meant in an arrogant way, it’s really just the nature of things: the specific seat position, the flat-six engine in the rear, its inimitable sound, the astonishing amount of space, the perfect feedback from the brakes, steering, and pedal system together with the striking suspension, the powerfully dynamic but always easily controllable burst of power, and the one-of-a-kind design that ties it all together, making this car the epitome of what it has meant to be a sports car—for fifty-five years.

The riveting question is how the 911 needs to develop in the future to continue to define the brand as the gravitational core of Porsche. Automotive industry megatrends—including digitalization, electrification, and connectivity—will play a role, as well as the question of how these trends should be evaluated.

“With each innovation, the decisive factor for me is whether it suits the character of the 911,” explains Achleitner.

“We don’t necessarily have to be the first in this regard with the 911. What’s crucial, rather, is that every innovation be offered in a typical Porsche manifestation.” Here, it’s the designers, above all, who are called on to work their magic, according to the 911 chief. The 996, for example, was the first to feature a navigation system. When Achleitner looks at this model today, he still finds it beautiful and elegant, although he has to admit that some elements strike him as a bit outdated now. It pains him, “because the car suffers for it.” It’s therefore important, he feels, to design digital interfaces between people and machines that are as timeless as possible. “Anything but contrived,” is Achleitner’s creed.

He’s convinced: “Even where the public might be expecting a bigger ‘wow factor,’ in the long run a certain aesthetic reserve pays dividends.”

The joy of driving always has to be in the foreground But the visual packaging of new technologies is just one aspect.

The other aspects involve the capabilities that they enable.

“Even when it comes to the individual assistance systems, they have to fit with the 911,” underscores Achleitner. After all, no one buys a sports car because it offers adaptive cruise control or a lane-keeping assist function. “Those are convenient and useful things. But the customer has to make the choice to use them and, above all, be able to switch them off when they’re not desired.”

One thing is especially important to him: the joy of driving always has to be in the foreground. “That’s why a 911 will always have a steering wheel.” And if autonomously driving cars break through more quickly than expected? “Then the 911 will be one of the last cars to drive autonomously.”

In all discussions of autonomous driving, Achleitner hews to his line: Porsche and the 911 are a bastion of stability amid the hype, which heretofore has primarily consisted of mere announcements and statements. The 911 will not change radically—and yet it does evolve. It was 1997 when the era of air-cooled engines came to an end and the age of water-cooled flat-six engines began. It was 2015 when the last naturally aspirated engine in the rear of the Carrera was completely replaced by a turbo engine. “Some fans rushed the barricades; it was all gloom and doom for many,” recalls Achleitner. “And then the same thing happened as always: nothing.” The new models have always received even more rave reviews than their predecessors. “That encourages us to think about fundamental innovations in the future as well.”

Electric drive technology? Why not?

Electric drive technology is a good example. “Two years ago I’d have said no way. Today I wouldn’t categorically rule it out,” concedes the head of the model line. Just to preclude any misunderstandings: the Porsche 911, Type 992 is not an electric sports car. But it could be an option somewhere down the line.

Achleitner describes his ongoing change of heart: “I drove the prototype of our coming electric sports car, the Mission E, and it was a very compelling experience. And the performance of the Porsche LMP race cars with hybrid drive systems is quite simply sensational.” Achleitner is certain that no car with a combustion engine alone could beat them around the corner.

Although he admittedly clings to the flat-six engine, he can, nowadays, imagine an electric motor in the 911. So there will be a next step in terms of drive technology—if it fits Porsche and the specific character of the 911.

The secret of the Porsche 911 could perhaps be described as follows: it’s the sportiest and most dynamic car in the company’s line-up, but also its bastion of stability. A point of orientation for which Achleitner has found a very simple development principle—which may have something to do with that short talk back in Berlin in 1990. In contrast to his counterpart that day, he does have an idea: “The new 911, too, will be the best 911 of all time.”

Porsche introduces blockchain to cars

In collaboration with the Berlin-based start-up XAIN, Porsche is currently testing blockchain applications directly in vehicles.

This makes the Zuffenhausen-based company the first automobile manufacturer to implement and successfully test blockchain in a car.

Panamera, 2018, Porsche AG Transactions based on this technology are both secure and can be processed far more quickly than anything that has come before. The applications tested include locking and unlocking the vehicle via an app, temporary access authorisations and new business models based on encrypted data logging. This could be developed further, for example, to improve autonomous driving functions.

Blockchain is a decentralised protocol for data transactions between business partners. It also forms the basis of the wellknown cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ethereum. Every change is recorded in chronologically arranged data blocks, making it transparent and tamper-proof. This could hold enormous potential, according to Oliver Döring, Financial Strategist at Porsche: “We can use blockchain to transfer data more quickly and securely, giving our customers more peace of mind in the future, whether they are charging, parking or need to give a third party, such as a parcel delivery agent, temporary access to the vehicle. We translate the innovative technology into direct benefits for the customer.”

The services are fast and secure The services developed on the foundation of blockchain are fast and very secure. The car becomes part of the blockchain, making a direct offline connection possible – that is, without diversion through a server. Taking 1.6 seconds, the process of opening and closing the car via an app is up to six times faster than before.

In addition, efficient cryptographic encryption takes place.

This process ensures that all activities are documented in the blockchain in a way that prevents them from being modified, and can be viewed using an app. For example, access authorisations can be distributed digitally and securely and can be monitored by the vehicle owner at any time. Access also works remotely.

Moreover, the technology makes it possible to assign temporary access authorisations for the vehicle – in a secure and efficient manner. A protected connection to vehicle data and

functionalities can be established using blockchain. At the same time, it protects all communication between participants. Thirdparty providers can be integrated without the need for additional hardware, simply by using “smart contracts”. Smart contracts are automated contracts that trigger transactions upon the occurrence of previously defined conditions. This means that compliance with the contract is ensured through technology.

New business models based on blockchain Porsche is also working on new business models based on blockchain: Through auditable data logging, the data to be processed is encrypted locally in a distributed blockchain. The user is in control of the data, deciding how to use it depending on the situation. All activities are documented in the blockchain, making deletions transparent. With this basis, the future of autonomous driving will see improved functions on offer: Local data can be used to obtain regional learning effects, which can be shared securely with other vehicles. The customer can make use of swarm data, which is protected at the same time.

About XAIN The start-up XAIN won the first “Porsche Innovation Contest” on the subject of blockchain in the summer of last year, beating over 100 other applicants in the process. Following the contest, interdisciplinary teams from across Porsche worked in collaboration with XAIN over the course of three months to develop and test applications. Blockchain was introduced into the Porsche Panamera using an energy-efficient mining process from XAIN. In addition, Porsche is currently working on further applications for the technology, including in the areas of charging and parking.

XAIN offers various blockchain and artificial intelligence solutions, with a particular focus on intelligent industrial applications. The founders Leif-Nissen Lundbæk and Felix Hahmann are particularly active in the automotive industry, where the two started out their careers. Together with researchers from the University of Oxford and Imperial College London, XAIN has developed a blockchain system in recent years, which significantly reduces the energy consumption of mining.

This means that the solution XAIN can offer is also suitable for mobile devices and vehicles.

PORSCHE 996 GT3 CUP CAR 2003

First entered in Carrera Cup in 2003 by VIP Pet Foods.

My CAMS log book duly signed and stamped shows the full history of the car and its track record since new. I am the fourth owner/ driver of the car after Sherrin Motorsport as the log book indicates.

I bought the car from Wayne Hennig in August 2008 in excellent condition and enjoyed several years of club sprints with PCQ and a magic long weekend at Bathurst organised by Trackcorp.

The car underwent a complete engine rebuild by Cragsted Performance Engines in 2010 and has spent less than 15 hours on the track since mainly due to health reasons.

The car is now silver in colour. Photos and much more information is available on request by those genuinely interested.

The car has never had a collision since I’ve owned it as senior PCQ members would know and the log book indicates very little damage earlier.

Included are 3 sets of wheels, 2 with slicks and 1 with wets, gauges, high pressure hose and lance for the air jacks and jack stands and tie down wheel rings.

1978 911 SC Tarmac Rally Car

This car ticks a number of boxes. Having been built as a tarmac rally car to tackle the likes of the Classic Adelaide Rally etc, it would make a potent road car or basis for a back date build, such as a 1973 RS replica.

The vehicle was imported into Australia from Japan in 2002 and subsequently converted to right hand drive using mostly new original panels. Motor and gearbox are original matching numbers.

1981 Porsche 928S

My 928 is in above average condition for its age, as the pictures no doubt show.

It has been my garaged baby for a few years now, however between ongoing family and work commitments, it's not getting any use and I hate seeing it sit there.

Car runs well and has low ks (106,553 Kms).

The only non-standard parts are the X-Force Exhaust, Koni Shocks and Stereo (with Sat-Nav). I also have a Momo wheel installed, however I still have the original which will be included with the sale.

No doubt a few things that a fastidious new owner might want to tidy up, but the car is ready to go without any work being required. I'm negotiable regarding Safety Certificate and Registration and will consider offers over $20k.

OK to flash in Victoria POLICE in Victoria say they are happy for drivers to flash their lights to warn other motorists about speed cameras.

Traffic Superintendent Dean McWhirter today said he was happy for motorists to flash their lights to warn other motorists they were approaching a speed camera.

"If that occurs I am comfortable with that because it means actually people are getting the message," Supt McWhirter said today.

Supt McWhirter also defended rule changes, revealed in the Herald Sun, which allow the hiding of speed cameras behind bushes and road signs.

"It was done to make sure that there was some protection in relation to the mobile speed camera operators," he said.

"To make sure the risk to them is mitigated.

"Unfortunately, what we know is that there have been a number of incidents where mobile speed camera vehicles have been swerved at.

In the last 12 months there have been 247 incidents of threats in relation to mobile speed camera operators.

"That's a commonsense approach," he said.

Police have changed laws that means mobile speed cameras can be hidden.

The force policy used to say that "under no circumstances" were cameras to be concealed by any covert means.

"And of those 247 incidents, 110 of those have been swerving at mobile speed cameras."

Supt McWhirter confirmed there would be occasions that operators would be concealed by bushes or signs to protect them.
