PORSCHE, 1N MO T OR.RACING: On the local scehe Alan Hamilton this year came out of retirement to come back into motor racing. Driving the exditing Carrera RSR sponsered by JAG in his first race at Hume Weir Alan showed that he has not lost any of his old skill and ability by taking out first place.

The car was entered in the first round of the Australian Sports Car Championship at Oran Park but owing to a gear box failure in the 5th lap, Alan was left with one gear only that being 11th He finished the remaining 15 laps with the car jammed in 1Ith gear but still managed to take 1Ith place behind Pete Geoghegan who won the race in his Mexico Blue Carrera.

Onthe Cross Country Rally sbene we have Dean Rainsford of Adelaide driving the exotic Melbourne built 27 Carrera rally car [sporting 6" 'bicycle wheels' under its large flaresi.

Dean is 么urrently leading the Aust卤'alian Rally CMmpionship.

On the International scene. Porsche Racing Team Manager Manfred Jantke late last year hired two top drivers namely Jacky Ickx of Belgium and Jochen Mass of Germany to drive the newly developed Turbo Porsche 936. Porsche this year have entered in the World Manufacturers' Championship. The Porsche works team are now leading the Championship after a great victory in the Imola 5001cm race in Italy. They lead with 60 points to24 points for Lola.

Around the World in 30 days driving a Porsche 924. Two Austrians Rudi Lins and Gerhard Plattner set out to drive round the world - start and finish is Innsbruck - in a Porsche 924. The route takes in 15 different countries and covers a total of 10,000 km., The two drivers will fly with their car from Pakistan to Australia, Australia to the USA and from the USA back to Europe (about 10,000 km).

These two drivers have already passed through Melbourne on their attempted world record drive.

THE FIRST PORSCHE. Dr. Porsche designed a sports car based on his Volkswagon in the late 1930's but at first the shortage of time and then the Second World War prevented development of this vehicle. It was his son Perry Porsche who, whilst living in Austria in 1947 decided that the moment was right to commence the project of type umber '356 1 .

The car took the shape of an open two-seater rather like the 'Speedster' as the popular roof-less model was to become known.

The frame supported an 1130 c.c. Volkswagon motor, at first with the standard carburetta and later with modified manifolds to take twin carburettas. It sat in front of the rear axle.

FrOnt and rear springing, brakes, gearbox and steering were all original VW parts. The left-hand drive prototype had a two piece flat windscreen joined by a narrow metal strip.

Luggage room was negligable as the boot was completely taken up by the petrol tank.

May 1948 saw the car ready for testing and the mountain roads of Austria proved an ideal trial area. Ferry Porsche and his colleagues were pleased with the lively performance of the light little car and its motor which was developing 40 BlIP. Testing was only just finished in September of the same year when a Swiss. offered to purchase the vehicle. The designers knew that without any money, production could not commence in the difficult times of the immediate post-war years, and so it was sold. Quite a gamble because nobody was sure of a supply of materials and components to even begin the next car.

In the months to come, the swift little machine caused quite an interest whilst being driven around Zurich and on two occasions was tested by racing drivers on a Grand Prix ciruit.

Their comments about the car's adaptability and road holding were widely reported in Motor Magazines which resulted in a demand from all over Europe.

Porsche No. 1 changed hands several times in Switzerland and then in 195 was purchased by a young driver to be used as a hiliclimb car. For this purpose he replaced the original motor with a current 1500 c.c. 'Super' engine and had considerable success.

With luck, the Porsche factory bought the car back in 1958 and it is the proudest exhibit of their small museum.

1000TH TURBO. After nearly 11/2 years of producing Turbo cars the company recently completed the 1000 th unit of this range and, in a little ceremony handed the car over to its new owner the Princess zu Furstenberg. It is not by chance that the Princess loves sports cars, for it was her father to receive the Porsche 356 Cabrio with the serial number '1' in 1950.

In that year he participated in the first 'Midnight-Sufl-RallYe' in Sweden.

One interesting point for the statistical records, out of the total of 1000 turbo cars 43% were sold on the domestic market. Although this model has been marketed in the US only since late summer 1975, American buyers already account for 36% of the sales.

HAVE YOU "BLOWN" THE AIR CLEANER OFF YOUR FUEL INJECTED PORSCHE YET?

Cross fire or induction leakage will occur whenever ignition cables are grouped closely together and run in parallel for some distance. This causes engine roughness, and can result in damaging preignition or detonation.

Cross fire is not caused by defective cable insulation. Rather, it is traceable to the magnetic field which surrounds any high tension conductor. Thus, the lead which is carrying high voltage at any given instant tends to induce voltage into an adjacent lead. Troublesome cross fire is most likely to occur between consecutive firing cylinders when these cylinders are located closely together in the engine block.

THE REMEDY 1.

Do not allow the plug leads to run parallel to each other for any great distance (as do the leads of cylinders 4, 5, 6 run over the Fan Housing on 911 vehicles)

2.

Replace plug leads with metal shielded cable and ensure that the shield is earthed to the engine frame at one end of the shield only.
