Also known as ‘LoL’, League of Legends is a computer game that was launched in 2012. It went on to become the most played game in the world, providing its developer, Riot Games, with a grappling hold over the online gaming scene for more than half a decade.
A complicated game with a steep learning curve, League of Legends is classed as a MOBA, which is short for ‘multiplayer online battle arena’. The game overlaps several different genres, but it is primarily a real-time strategy game that involves two teams of five players competing against each
other. Like many other MOBAs, League of Legends relies more on strategy and dexterity than lightning-fast finger reactions.
One of the most successful PC games on the planet, League of Legends spawned the Worlds Championship. In 2022, the Worlds Championship set a new record for League of Legends eSports, attracting 5.1 million concurrent viewers.
To date, Riot Games’ mobile portfolio has surpassed $828 million, according to data from Sensor Tower, with League of Legends: Wild Rift attracting more than $500 million in global player spending across Google Play and the App Store.
