Do you love our cover this month? We present the wonderful artwork of the Children who participated in the Kid’s Art Workshops and Exhibition. It averaged out to around 15 children attending the workshops and we had a great role up of parents, grandparents and members of the public attend the exhibition. The children were presented with a certificate of attendance and were able to take their painting home. There are a number of certificates and paintings to be collected; they are available for collection from the RTC. Congratulations to the Children involved and to the organisers of this wonderful event. A special shout out to the Mums and Dads, G-Parents too - your assistance getting the Children here has not gone under the radar – thank you.

Still on the Art Theme – The Carboot Sale and Art Exhibition are going ahead unless the rules change in the mean time. The opening of the Exhibition is on at 6.30pm on Friday 11 September. Cannot make it Friday? The Exhibition will be open all weekend. Bag yourself a bargain at the Carboot Sale on Saturday morning, then have a look (and purchase) artwork from local artists. 15 artists are displaying their work.

And still on the Art Theme – A@RT are hosting an Adult Art Workshop called Bubbles and Brushes. BYO bubbles and a share plate – try your hand at painting with the assistance of our local artists for guidance. From all accounts it will be a good social night.

Waterobics will soon be returning for the summer. Look for Babz’s article in this Rag. A big reminder that the Association’s AGM is being held on 17 September 7.30pm at the Community Hall. Nomination Forms are in the Rolly Rag again this month. If you wish to take up a position please have the form filled in by 2 members of the Association and have it in to the RTC two weeks prior to the AGM. To be able to attend the AGM you need to be a financial member of the Association. Membership fees can be receipted at the RTC as well.

The Seniors Plant display is being held on 5 September – come along and vote for the flower display and the potted plant most to your liking. Gold Coin entry.

My Aged Care – did you know you can register for My Aged Care from the age of 65. See the poster on page 9. See Chris or Mark if you want to register for My Aged Care but are a bit hesitant.

We can sit with you during the phone call or online application. To register before you are in dire need of the services helps when the time comes. All the base work and assessments have been completed which means it will not take as long to get the services in place.

Medical line-up for this month is sparse, thank goodness: John Holliday had major surgery and is now at home recuperating.

Things are going well, so lots of good wishes go out to him for a speedy recovery. Linda Birse has been admitted into hospital for serious treatment and we wish her the best of good luck and a positive recovery. Also heard that John Bewert has had a fall and broken his femur! Buggar, hey John, hope to hear you’re up and at ‘em soon.

And congratulations to Andrew Stallman on his appointment as Principal of our local State Primary School.

So, it’s been pretty quiet at the Community Centre with several projects on the go and all activities chugging along happily (well, we hope so – no complaints, presently). Lots of visitors to keep the place looked lived in and the RTC providing its usual convenient and valuable services.

The AGM is set down for Thursday, Septr. 17th @ 7.30pm. Be good to see a few people turn up.

Sadly, once again not many attended the Vietnam Vets’ Day Service down at the beach- front cenotaph. But it was a glorious day, lovely setting and a great little ceremony honouring those who sacrificed so much for the rest of us.

And the VERY best news: we were successful in our funding application to the GCBF for money to replace our air-cons in the big Hall and upgrade our security system. So grateful, humbled and thrilled to receive such a substantial amount for such important and necessary infrastructure.

Spring is firmly established with new life emerging all around us. Birds are raising young, sitting on eggs or are still in courtship mode. Male Tooth-billed Bower-birds can be heard in the forest surrounding Paluma, performing an amazing repertoire of calls as they invite a female to admire the newlylaid carpet of overturned leaves. They are clever ventriloquists: the calls seeming to come from everywhere and it is difficult to locate the source. In several Paluma gardens, Satin Bower-birds have constructed their arched bowers of sticks with the surrounding ground decorated with blue objects.

Throughout the year; Paluma is blessed with colourful plants Photos of which are regularly posted on the website but food gardens seldom get attention. Growing fruit and vegetables in Paluma is a real challenge. The climate can be unkind at times but the wild-life presents the major obstacles to successful food gardening. Bush rats and White-tailed rats eat stone fruits, such as plums and peaches long before the fruit is ripe. Cockatoos savage citrus crops and at night wallabies emerge from the forest and feast on any new green leaf within reach; citrus, gardenia, rose and hibiscus are favourites along with potted herbs. I imagine Wallabies are a nuisance in Balgal and Rollingstone gardens too. But the worst predator here is the Brush Turkey. Two or three of these can, in only a few minutes, lay waste to an entire bed of vegetables: nothing is spared, pots are up-ended and their contents eaten and they rival rats in their plunder of pumpkin and choko vines.

So, it is with awe and admiration that I see several Paluma residents have persevered against adversity and have produced food crops that would make a professional market gardener envious. These gardens are virtually pestproof; sometimes in raised beds, usually mesh-enclosed, with designs that keep pests out but allow the gardener access for weeding and harvesting.

Other kitchen gardens are in purpose-built boxes suspended from veranda rails – excellent for restricted spaces. The secret of success in producing strong, healthy plants, apart from having green thumbs, is ascribed to fertilising appropriately. Some choose commercial fertiliser but many prefer to use cow or goat manure while others have worm farms and use the liquid and casts from these. At the Paluma Environmental Education Centre, hydroponic gardens have been established with healthy crops of lettuce varieties, tomatoes, beans, radish and a variety of herbs. A conventional vegetable garden has also been established at the school, with the plots protected by bird-mesh arches. So far turkeys have not discovered the hydroponic plants but a young turkey was quick to take advantage of a net being accidentally left up on the other garden.

We are still unable to re-open the History Display due to social distancing restrictions. However, there are some activities ahead. G’day All, We had our first BBQ night since Covid 19 spoilt life for many people. It was great to meet up with many good friends again.

We had a good roll up for our A.G.M. Our former President Faye has had to step down due to health reasons; we thank her for the years of great work and time she has given to our Club. We need a new President so hoping someone will step up for the position. Our new Committee is: Vice President: Michele Dorrington, Secretary: Kerrie Cochrane, Treasurer: Linda Cleaver, Committee Members: Cheryl Pearson, Bernice Ivett, Faye Thompson, Patron: Ken Turner.

We played Quoits after the AGM. It was a lot of fun as usual.

TEAM TWO were the winners. Photos attached. Congratulations you all did well. Don Pearson won the Lucky Member draw and Tom Ruddick won the Lounds Voucher.

September 13th will be our Fathers Day Celebration at Ken Turners place; 52 Acheron Dr, Balgal. It will be a great night as always. LOOK FOR THE BROLGA AT THE ENTRANCE. To say it was a big month is an understatement. Huge and Enormous comes to mind. Plenty of visitors having a hit on our course and enjoying the fun in the sun.

We started the month with August Monthly Medal with some really hot, hot scores. Pam McCarthy showed she still has it winning the ladies and Chris Farlow and Reg Geritz show the way for the men.

Keith McGuinness Memorial Day was well supported even with some of our men representing Mystic Sands in the Ayr Open. Ken Dickenson and Wayne McCarthy won on a count back from new Members Blake Couch and Bruce Ferrett.

Big congratulations to Tony Cochrane for his outstanding result in Winning C Grade Gross Winner after 72 holes at the Ayr Open. Really showed the others the way and represented Mystic Sands with pride. Mick McMahon also had a day out on the Sunday winning Nett C Grade winner….Good job mate!

Golf world Challenge saw a big field and Scott Gillespie presented prizes to Rhonda Gurd and Darren Beavis Nett 69, Runners up were Reg Geritz, John Gurd and Greg Ryding.

Thank you to everyone in our lovely Community for all their donation for our Breast Cancer Fundraiser Day. Some people delivered their money boxes, brought raffles tickets, donated prizes and lots of cash donations. All Golf Competition fees, cart hire and prizes were donated by Mick and Lisa McMahon. Thank you…even the caravan visitors gave donations. Upon writing, total amount raised is well over $1700 all going to cancer research. Most of us know someone touched by this disease, personally; I have had first hand experience in the last few months and donations like this go a long way to advancing the treatment for many of us to be survivors. Thank you. Some golf was played on the day as well. Winners being; Tony Griffith, John Gurd and Rhonda Gurd. Runners up; Reg Geritz, Mick McMahon and Greg Ryding.

ROLLINGSTONE & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB INC. Hello Rollingstone, Well we were able to conduct our 1st. meeting since the pandemic started. It looked a bit strange with people sitting 1.5mts apart. This meeting was the Clubs AGM and Award night. It was great to see our Members enjoying themselves and stil being able to interact with one another.

The extension to the Lions Den is now complete. This will enable our Members direct access to stores and property for future activities.

We have installed 2 x dart boards in this area and we are planning to have a competition darts night, inviting members of the Community to get involved. Our first Darts Night being on Saturday 5th September, commencing at 6pm. A free sausage sizzle and nibblies will be provided and we are hoping for a good response. There will be prizes and Raffles on the night.

We conducted our 1st Bunings Sausage Sizzle at North Shore under new guidelines set out by Bunnings.

A few of us were at the Rolly School last week providing a beautiful, healthy breakfast for the Students and Teachers. The Junior Leos prepared the food under Lion John Muller’s guidance. This is a great event and is appreciated by the kids and Staff alike.

As usual, some of us have been out in the Community providing assistance where we can.

Lion David Hall is manufacturing Planter Boxes for sale at a reasonable price. These will be on sale at the Car Boot Sale on Saturday 12th September—Thanks David.

We are also supporting the Art Show on the same day by running the bar and as always Lions will provie a Sausage Sizzle on the day. Our best wishes go out to those who are recovering from recent surgeries and ill health.

ROLLINGSTONE RSL Vietnam Veterans Day was Commemorated on 18 August at the Balgal Beach Cenotaph.

Due to COVID 19, Defence Personnel are not able to provide Ceremonial support at Services. Members of the Vietnam Veteran and Veterans Motorcycle Clubs attended the service and assisted with flag orderly duties. The RSL as well as the attendees at the service very much appreciated their efforts and attendance.

On 5 September commencing at 11am the RSL will be holding its Auxiliary AGM followed by a Members Meeting at 12noon.

Lunch will be served at 1pm.

Rollingstone RSL was established in 2000 so we will be reaching its twentieth anniversary this year. To celebrate, the RSL invites Members and their guests to attend a dinner on Saturday 10 October commencing at 5..30pm at Mystic Sands Gold Resort. The cost will be $30 per person which includes a three course meal, some drinks and live music.

FISHERMAN'S LANDING FISHING & SOCIAL CLUB Monthly BBQ: The first BBQ since the virus hit was held on 31st July and was well attended. We have on good authority that no sheep duffing had occurred. But this cannot be confirmed.

Tale of Woe: Our current fishing events co-ordinator, Dan on his first trip out since about 1948 had trouble finding his way back into Rollingstone Creek due to technical issues with his GPS. That's Dan’s story anyway.

Our sympathies go to the President and his family on the passing of his mother-in-law; Joan. She will be sadly missed and due to COVID 19, unfortunately they cannot be present for the funeral. We are thinking of them at this time.

Dickies Fishing Report: G’day Folks. Another couple of months gone by so quickly. I feel my drinking, golfing and fishing time has been passing too quickly in what remains of my life. Anyway in past info letters I have been talking about our wonderful Whales visiting our area in their thousands and reiterating on how your boating skills around these mammals should be updated to the laws of the sea or don't go boating at night as you cannot see them. Townsville Bulletin on Tuesday 18th August had an article on a nightime incident with a whale or whales around the Palm Islands. It is understood that a boat spun around off course which disabled the vessel. One person, at the back was thrown overboard and broke his arm and suffered some internal bleeding after a collision with a whale or whales. So it can and will happen please be careful. Luckily the vessel did not sink. I have been told on numerous occasions that the best bilge pump is a frightened man with a bucket.

To more fishing news. Taylors Beach, Cattle Creek and Crystal Creeks are all producing great Barra and Grunter. Crabs both muddies and blue swimmers being taken in reasonable quantities at Olera, Scrubbie and Rollingstone creeks.

The inner shoals in-front of Balgal, Mystic and right down to Paluma Shoals producing good Doggie and Spanish Mackerel also Sweetlip, Cod and Grunter. Best baits being live bait or floating Pilchards and Gar. Lots of bait in the creeks with Rollingstone alive with prawns, herring and mullet at times when the tide is on the way in. If you know of an area where you can pump yabbies', the winter whiting are here at Balgal all along the beach. Hopefully, the reasonably calm conditions overnight and early morning until 10 to 11 am will continue until summer arrives which won't be long. Well, that's all for this month. Safe boating and tight lines until next time. Don't forget to put in a trip sheet with either Ingham or Townsville Coast Guards or at least tell somebody where you are going and what time you will be back, You can leave your out of date flares and EPIRBS at the landing for safe disposal…….Regards Dickie.

When my office was approached by the Association about their application, I was more than happy to offer my support as a referee. The Association is an integral part of the Rollingstone Community, with the centre often a meeting point for several local groups in the area, including the grand opening of the Artists at Rollingstone Exhibition on September 11. I have no doubt the upgrades will only enhance the Centre and I would like to congratulate the Association on their funding win.

On another note, the Member for Hinchinbrook Inter Club Fishing Challenge will wrap up on Sunday, September 13.

I love seeing the friendly competition between the Toomulla Fishing Club and Fisherman's Landing Fishing and Social Club.

Fishing is one of those pastimes that brings together anglers young and old and the level of support the event enjoys every year is a testament to the passion shown by members of both clubs. I’m sure there’ll be some big catches, or tall tales of the ones that got away.

Boxes a light in dark times At Crystal Creek, 70 kilometres from Townsville, the Fehrenbacher family scrambled to set up online sales of their fruit and vegetables when city farmers' markets closed in April.

Despite dabbling in online sales through their Facebook page in 2016, Matthias Fehrenbacher said customised veggie boxes were worth the effort in setting up the digital platform.

"I think it was three weeks on the computer, pretty much every day," he said.

"It's a lot more work than we thought it would be, but I think we've got lots of new customers through the website that we didn't have before. A lot of regulars changed over as well."

Many unexpected overhead costs factored into the move online, with the diverse farm growing 80 different crops of herbs, fruits and vegetables that can be custom-added to orders.

Fresh vegetables picked and ready to be boxed and sent off to the farms food box subscribers.

"You need a lot more space to pack the actual boxes. We had to build a new coldroom, do some shelving and that kind of stuff," he said.

"The labour cost is a bit higher. You've got the shipping and the boxes and a lot more consumables in there too."

But despite the challenges, the benefits have made it worthwhile.

"We're going to keep the website going. Everyone seems to be pretty happy with the quality and freshness of everything."

Dear Rolly Rag Readers, The COVID Rollercoaster of 2020 continues. Melbourne Authorities are extending the lock down just as things seem to be getting under control, but it seems like there are problems popping up in Sydney daily. Do not become complacent because you live in North Queensland. This virus does and will spread in hot humid climates so continue to practice your social distancing. If you are ill, get checked, then isolate yourself and wear a mask until your results come back. If going into a licensed premises, restaurant or other businesses, look for the tracing register and sign in, its only used for contact tracing when there is a problem. Police are required to check that people are signing in but I can assure you we are NOT using that information in any way. These simple steps will reduce the capacity of this thing to replicate.

Good to see local people in the district are reducing the fuel for fires in upcoming warmer months. A little smoke in the air now is a much preferable to a lot later. Remember, contact your neighbours, comply with the restrictions on your fire permits, listen to the advice of your fire warden and most of all be sensible. If the conditions are not right, don’t strike that match.

Its sad to see the amount of visitors still coming into the area and not playing safe. Just last weekend we located 3 drink drivers, 1x person not wearing a helmet on a quad bike, another wanting to overtake on a bend with double white lines, someone wanting to smoke drugs at the waterhole, others parking in places that stop farmers from moving machinery. If you see people doing the wrong thing and you know its not safe report to Police Link – 131444. Sometimes people like these, just need a little bit of encouragement to do the right thing, we are more than happy to provide it.

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL

Hi Community, Improving Reading, Writing and Numeracy; That’s our goal at Rolly!

Lol, sound familiar? For those of us who grew up with the 3 R’s, (reading, riting and rithmetic) in many ways these are still the fundamentals of schools today. Of course, the mighty blackboard and chalk has retired and rulers are no longer allowed to be rapped across knuckles.

Presently, we have 60 students at Rolly who have been working very hard and deserve the great results they achieved last semester. We now have an iPad for every student in two classes. These are not used for games, but for essential learning such as reading, writing and numeracy; skills that we once did on slate boards, blackboards and books.

Yet even today, most class time is still spent using pencils, paper, blocks and materials to support our problem solving. Daily times tables and sound practice still happens but supporting some of the old proven strategies is today’s modern technology gizmos. For instance, in English at the moment, the students are researching and making brochures.

Something that we have all done at school at some point in time. The difference is that students have access to books, multiple internet sites, video clips and pictures for research. They create electronic brochures and mock websites with hyperlinks, videos and sounds.

However, there is a lot more to school and with CoviD restrictions easing a little, school is back in full swing with those fun activities.

Students have been out bowling and batting in readiness for the T20 Big Bash Tournament in a couple of weeks in Townsville. The Bluestone Cup is approaching fast and Chappy has had his whistle singing to ready the team for their touch football clash. Mrs B has singing in full swing across the whole school and yes, believe it or not, the 4/5/6 class actually elected to learn RECORDER. Oh, such elegant squeaky sounds! My daughter, who is such a magical musician with this mighty instrument, has now been banished to the duck pen for practice. We now have a strong student council who have organised crazy hair and dress up days for all students and a huge thank you to the Lions and Leo’s for such a wonderful breakfast the other day.

So while our One and Only Amazing Mr Bruce is off on long service and touring around the northern country side and yes we are extremely jealous, here at Rolly school we are as busy as can be and having loads of fun learning. Thanks to Mr Bruce, we now have some pen pals from Thallon State School.

SALISBURY STEAK MEATBALLS MEATBALLS 680gr mince 1/4 cup mustard (coarse grain) 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp. seasoning salt 1 tsp. onion powder

1/2 cup panko crumbs 1/4 cup tomato sauce 1 egg 1/2 tsp. pepper 2 tbsp. olive oil

GRAVY 2 tbsp. butter, unsalted 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 cup beef or chicken broth 1 tbsp. tomato sauce

1 large onion chopped 2 tbsp. cornstarch 1/2 tsp. seasoning salt parsley for garnish

Add all Meatball ingredients (except olive oil) to bowl and mix well. Shape into 1 inch balls should be about 40 balls.

Put olive oil into frypan, heat over medium heat and add meatballs. Cook on all sides until cooked. Add more olive oil if needed. Remove and set aside.

Add butter and onion and cook until soft and translucent.

In a bowl, whisk together cornstarch and stock. Add broth mixture and remaining gravy ingredients to pan and cook for about 3-5 minutes, sauce should thicken. If the sauce is too thick, add more broth. Taste for seasoning and adjust as necessary. When the gravy is done, add the meatballs and toss until covered. Garnish with parsley.

MASHED POTATOES 5 large potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1 inch cubes 4 tbsp. butter, unsalted 1/4 cup cream cheese 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper 1/4 cup skim milk, add more if needed

Boil chopped potatoes until tender, drain and put in a bowl. Add milk, butter, cream cheese and salt and pepper.

Mash the potatoes until desire consistency. Add additional milk if necessary. Serve Meatballs over mashed potatoes and a side of vegetables if you want..
