NEWS

So, Gwen Cahill has moved to town. Gwen was a very active Senior who contributed lots in that area. With much expertise, she arranged many of our holidays and trips away. Another one MIA and we’re the poorer for it. Also, Bob & Chris Richardson have moved to Ayr to be closer family. Another couple who did lots and lots of • good stuff during their time here and they’ll be sorely missed. We wish all these folk the very best in their new lives. And Trevor Geritz and Natalie Cardwell have sold their home and are off in their caravan. Sorry to lose them as well but hope they keep well and have fun. We welcome back into our midst, Nina Rattazzo. Nina is a Life Member of the Community Association who worked hard for many years some time ago. Well, she’s back! It’ll be great to have her knowledge and expertise working • for our Organisation again. Ruth Brooker has been better. We hope to see her buzzing around again soon with that cheery smile standing out. Jeanette Webster is not keeping well and we send all good wishes her way. WOW, what a super-special time our Country Music arvo turned out to be!! The GOTTANI SISTERS were just soooooo good and had everyone rockin’; the McMahon Sisters were loved and enjoyed – such lovely voices; and the Country Music Club were thoroughly wonderful; but we did miss the Smith Girls. Judyana would have just had the best time – we so miss her and Bobby Holt driving our music scene. However, we had a painting (portrait) of her on display so we’d know she really was there with us. This was done by local lady, Ann Martin, and is absolutely beautiful. We’ll be putting it up in the Big Hall. Yep, it was a really terrific time and yes, we’ll do it all again. We’ve got some work to do on it – to streamline it and make it a tad more professional for 2023. In the meantime, our sincerest thanks go to the Lions and the Wanderers’ Travellers who supplied and served the tucker and drinks; and to John Muller and the Country Music folk for helping Bob and Deb close up. A big job and left to so few, so we offer our sincerest thanks to those who helped so well and so willingly. Things are always better than good when everyone is enjoying good music and there’re no hatchets being brandished. Makes for lotsa happiness and kindness. Thanks, you-all…………. •

community with an interesting and entertaining line-up of activities and functions. Several triedand-true events by request and quite a few innovations. We’ll unveil them monthly during the year – once they’re all in place. We have much to do administratively before Christmas, so we’re winding down our activities and working hard. As a matter of fact, October sort of saw the end of all of our special functions otherwise there’re only the usual daily and weekly activities in place. However, as usual, at this time of the year there’ll be 40,000 parties happening, so there’ll be lots of social activity going on which means plenty to do. The Lions are doing “CAROLS” and it looks like being a goodie, so please consider bringing the kids along and making it all worthwhile again. We’re doing a stall at “Carols” which we hope will be made up of edible Christmas Treats and novelty stuff, if all our plans go as we hope they will. Looking forward to having some interesting and appealing items for sale. Our trip to see “Menopause the Musical” was a success. Much laughter and innuendo forthcoming to make for a very happy night out. And the trip to the Markets, Queens Gardens, and Project Plants followed by a counter lunch at the Kirwan Sports Club was much the same and also an enjoyable way to round out the year.

Rainy day baking trial: APPLE TURNOVERS made with puff pastry sheets cut into 4 squares, apple pie filling dusted with brown sugar and cinnamon. Fold over to form triangles and bake till golden. Rollingstone & District Lions Club Inc. Hi Everybody, Have you caught the Christmas spirit yet? You are just coming along normally, conscious of getting Christmas cards out, planning lunch and searching for that extra gift online, but doing it all remotely, not really in the Christmas spirit. Then suddenly it hits, something triggers it and you’re sprinked with star dust and ‘WOW’ you’ve got the Christmas Spirit. At our Lions Club we have it already and we want to pass it on to each one of you. On 9th of December we have a new program for Twilight Carols, and we promise heaps of star dust. We have a group of Market Stalls with a 4.00pm set up, all with a Christmas flavour, Santa’s reply to letters sent and other surprises.

Saturday nights also have priorities around Christmas time. Our Santa run with lollies and lions Christmas cakes is on Saturday the 17th of December, again with some improvement. We are starting at the Tasman Caravan Park. Hen Camp Creek Road at 8.30 am and calling in at Bushy Parker Park before we do the tour around the streets. We will put a map up on facebook showing approximate times, but if we go past your place without the Fire Truck sirens on don’t worry we will not miss you, it just means we are rotating around to get ready to see you. Last year we held Christmas Lunch at the Lions Den for those who are alone on Christmas Day and we all had a ball. Please ring me if you wish to attend or volunteer on the day. John Holliday has promised to improve his dad jokes or there will be no Christmas pudding for him.

This year it’s on a Friday night as part of our refresh program to I promise you all heaps of star dust encourage a stronger involvement before school holidays. We are conscious that a Friday night may not suit everybody, but Michelle Club - President Ph. 0490 338 668

Are you ready for the upcoming Storm Season? Are you new to our beautiful area and uncertain where to obtain information about how to prepare yourself and your home for severe weather? Or are you not sure what you should do during an event? What should you do with your pets? Am I in a storm surge area? Will I need to evacuate? Where will I go? How do I turn off the electricity/gas/ water? There is a huge amount of information available on the Townsville City Council website:

https://www.townsville.qld.gov.au Click on DISASTER DASHBOARD Follow the headings to read about the answers to your questions and watch the videos to further educate yourself. Please utilise the above tools to get together your supplies and “toolkit”. We all need to prepare our personal matters and homes in case we do have a major weather event. The Rollingstone SES has an Open Day on Saturday 29th October, Pace Park, 9-2 — meet your local SES crew, ask questions. Townsville City Council has a Get Ready for Disaster Day on 6th November 2022 at Jezzine Barracks, which is another good source of information.

Because they’re afraid of the net Take care , Irene Dickie’s Fishing Report Well giday folks, another year nearly over. We have had some long periods of South Easterly winds making boating to the reef and islands very difficult and for short periods only between high pressure systems going through and ridging up the coast. The Whale migration is finshed for the year so approx 35 thousand of them will be heading South and feeding on the shrimps of Antartica instead of our local bait fish schools. Remember the Fin Fish closure dates for 2022 are 22 to 26 October and 21 to 25 November and the Barra closure is 1 November to 31 January. And the new closures for Spanish Mackeral 22 October to 12 November and 21 November to 12 December 2022. Because of the consistent mango winds persisting up until now most of the fishing has been limited to our creeks. Taylors Beach estuary is producing good catches of Mangrove Jack, Grunter and the odd Barra, with Cattle, Crystal and Ollera fishing reasonably well with some good catches of crabs being taken. Rollingstone Creek has produced excellent catches of Mangrove Jack, Grunter and winter Bream still hanging around. This recent rain should liven up the crabs and the fish. The mouths and front sandbars are best with best baits being livies then plastic lures and Gold Bombers . All the creek entrances have silted up and Rollingstone needs two metres of tide with Scrubby needing two point five metres which does not give you a lot of fishing time, so be aware of the depth requirements for your vessel. The inner shoals have produced the odd Coral Trout and Sweetlip with the normal large schools of Nannygai, all around 38 centimetres. Thats all for this month safe boating and tight lines and remember you can leave your out of date flares and EPIRBS at the Landing for safe disposal. Regards Dickie

Rollingstone RSL October has been another wonderful and successful month for our local RSL, and November into Christmas is going to be busy as well as there are great events planned. A Christmas Party is planned for the end of November so, for current members and friends, please keep an eye on your emails and on the Rollingstone RSL Facebook page for future announcements! The Committee is planning on a fun event!! The Meat Tray Raffles are still very popular and now an added Spirits Raffle has proved popular as well. Congratulations to all those who were the lucky winners for October! Finally, this month, the Goose Club Jackpot of $600 was won!! Congratulations to Tony Griffith on winning the top prize!! Not a bad game win for the price of $3!!

If you haven’t been up to the RSL night at the Golf Club yet, please join us! There is so much to offer all our Community in these nights of fun and meeting up with old mates! Happy Hour drinks, at $5 per drink, starts at 5pm and concludes at 6 pm. On a sad note, our local RSL is losing our Padre. Padre Bob and Chris are moving to Ayr to help support their daughter who is returning to the workforce and in her final year of R.N. Nursing Studies. They will be busy grandparents again, as well as getting involved with their new local RSL and Church, and in their spare time visiting family and friends around Australia. Bob and Chris have been active members of our local community for the last 7 years and shall be greatly missed. We wish them all the best in their new endeavours! They have promised to visit us again in the future, which we look forward to.

Local winners, Keith and June Padre Bob and his wife Chris will be sadly missed.

Office of Nick Dametto MP Member for Hinchinbrook Visit: 86-92 Herbert Street, Ingham QLD 4850 P: 07 4765 4700 | F: 07 4765 4709 |E: hinchinbrook@parliament.qld.gov.au Hello readers As I venture through the electorate of Hinchinbrook, I often think how lucky we are to call this place home; alongside the amazing natural amenity of North Queensland, the people who live in our region are second to none. Throughout the electorate we have some truly amazing community groups, associations, clubs and individuals who all, in their own way, contribute to the social fabric of this wonderful electorate we call home. Last month I was delighted to be invited down to the Fisherman’s Landing Fishing and Social Club’s presentation for the 2022 Member for Hinchinbrook Challenge, which I was a proud sponsor of. I was glad to hear that competition was fierce between the Fisherman’s Landing and Toomulla clubs, with entries up on last year and good numbers and species of fish caught. It was terrific to catch up with the members, trade some tall stories and of course congratulate the winners of this year’s event. While we’re on the topic of fishing, I would also like to thank everyone who completed Maritime Safety Queensland’s Boating facilities upgrade survey last month. With more than 10,000 additional recreational boats registered in Queensland in the last two years alone, it is evident the need for modern maritime facilities and access is higher than ever.

Feedback that was provided will play a big part assisting in identifying where future funding will be allocated for recreational boating infrastructure such as boat ramps and pontoons. I will be advocating to ensure that our facilities in the Hinchinbrook electorate feature in these upgrades in years to come. Nick Dametto MP Member for Hinchinbrook

Rollingstone State School The wheels on the bus go round and round; all the way to the Billabong Sanctuary. Term 4 has been an awesome start for our younger grades. Well, we can’t let the older students have all the fun with their sporting days and school camps! The rangers were eager and ready for the group upon arrival. For some students, this was their first visit and opportunity to learn about Australian wildlife up close and personal. Some student comments: Holding the spotted python was really cool. He was actually cool and smooth to touch and you could feel the muscles of the snake tense around your arm. He was a smaller python who only grows to a metre in length and hangs out inside caves to eat bats. - Connor The crocodiles were humongous! Jupiter was so big and fat that he couldn’t jump for the food the ranger was holding on the stick. They caught him between the Strand and the Ville Casino in Townsville. If he wanted to, I think it could swallow the entire class. - Lataya I think the Whistler ducks liked me as they kept following us everywhere. - Kane My favourite part was feeding the ducklings, kangaroos and the turtles. The koalas were so cute. - Ezekiel The baby Pademelon was so cute. It was as small as your hand. - Alysia Prep to Year 4 also got the chance to sneak out of class to visit Berra Farming and the packing shed crew at Hen Camp to learn about pineapple and vegetable production. Wow! What a setup! The automation at the shed was amazing and we were lucky enough to see the machines in action. Damien was talking in millions such as 1.2 million pineapples planted each year and picking approximately 2.4 million pineapples per year. There were a few maths lessons afterwards with the younger students about adding some zeros onto numbers to reach the millions. Prep/One still had difficultly grasping the concept but could all agree that there were plenty of pineapples in the paddocks and in the packing shed. We tasted a few different varieties of delicious pineapples straight from the farm and shed. The Jubilee was super sweet. A big thank you to the Berra family for sharing their backyard.

Toomulla News AED (Defibrillator) available at little library in Herald Street

The Annual General Meeting of the Toomulla Community Association was held in October. The meeting was well attended and drew some lively discussion. It was good to see our retiring Secretary/Treasurer Margie Gallagher, in attendance.

Councillor and to hear progress on several items that she is working on with Council and other bodies. The Community Association Committee has been looking for some feedback on ideas for this year’s Children’s Christmas Party. Despite publicity in the Rolly Rag last month, the feedback has been zero. AED (Defibrillator) available at Paluma Community Hall for public use (near the main entrance door to the hall up the ramp)

The markets on Sunday 2nd October were exceedingly successful. We had 11 stallholders and in addition the Paluma Rural Fire Brigade ran a bookstall which was successful in raising funds for the Brigade. For just the second time we had a Community cake stall, ably operated by Charlie Allen, which sold out and provided a worthwhile boost to the PDCA funds. Naturally the sausage sizzle was well patronised and the super sausages (with pineapple and coleslaw) proved very popular. It was a coolish day and it was noticed that a good many family groups were availing of the children’s playground. This is the last market for this year and the next one will be on Easter Sunday in 2023. Our next community activity will be the “Monsters & Mayhem” on Saturday November 12th. It will be the usual “bring a plate to share” arrangement. Those that wish to dress up are welcome but so are those who do not wish to do so. It tends to be a great fun night and the bar will be open with quite a selection of drinks available at reasonable prices. On October 20th the PRFB (Paluma Rural Fire Brigade) conducted a survey of places other than the village hydrants from which the Brigade can assess water in the event of a fire outside the village. The areas most at risk are the five acre blocks - some 2 km west of Paluma. The Brigade has also planned a gathering of Rural firefighters from Paluma, Waterfall Creek [Hidden Valley] and Mt Fox at Hidden Valley on November 5th so that we can share our similar problems and be able to call on each other in times of need in any one area and become familiar with each others vehicle unit. Michele reports that she has had a number of recent visitors - brown tree snakes - they are not dangerous but her recent post to <paluma.com> makes interesting reading.

There’s no doubt that my place is a haven for tree snakes – especially brown tree snakes. I see them regularly in the garden, on the house roof, on the veranda (mostly dangling from the rafters), in the garage and occasionally they make forays into the laundry.

Well, now it seems that my place is such an attractive habitat for brown tree snakes that they are breeding. This rather cute, but not so cuddly, baby brown tree snake was discovered amongst the bromeliads when I was tidying the garden on Saturday (8 October). The very distinctive reddish-brown bands on the body and those enormous eyes means that the identification of this wee baby is indisputable. It was hard to estimate the length of this specimen, but it was perhaps 30 cm to 40 cm in size. Brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis) reproduce by laying clutches of 4 to 6 eggs. Perhaps I can expect to see more of these beautiful babies basking in my garden as the weather warms up. The main prey for juvenile brown tree snakes is recorded as small lizards, skinks and frogs.

Hello Rag Readers, As per normal, all Emergency Services are seeing a massive rise in calls for service for a variety of issues as the weather warms up. Burglaries, people experiencing mental health issues, domestic violence, traffic accidents, domestic accidents, snake bites, increased illicit drug use and more. Calls for service always increase over the summer months. If you, or someone you know is experiencing difficulties due to homelessness, unemployment or general anxiety for whatever reason please turn to the right places for assistance. Its my experience that alcohol, drugs and abuse of medications can make matters worse in the long run. Organisations such as the North Queensland Domestic Violence Service, Life Line, relatives and friends are there to assist if you want it – just ask for assistance. Want to be a police officer? Recruitment has become a big issue for many organisations and Queensland Police is no exception. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the QPS there is a massive open day at the North Queensland Police Academy at Belgian Gardens, Townsville on Saturday 5 November 2022 from 9am to 1pm. This is a great opportunity to meet people from our Uniformed Sections, Dog Squad, Organised Crime (drug/stock) Investigators, Prosecutions, Forensics and Scientific Sections if you would like to have more information than is available in our glossy brochures. This is not the service I joined in 1985, we had manual typewriters in those days!!! Like the Military, the skills young people develop as Police Officers is highly sought after in other occupations such as Customs, many Investigative roles with corporate bodies and the like. Like any job it has good and bad points but it is

certainly one that I have never been bored in or left me feeling that I would have been happier doing something else. We have a lot of men and women that would attest to a similar belief. There have been recent instances of young offenders in stolen vehicles moving between Cairns and Townsville. If you have access to any dash camera footage of these offenders please contact police link on 131444 to enable us to view it. I do not endorse anyone taking matters into their own hands with any vigilante activities, but if you can assist with providing evidence it would be appreciated. It would be wise TODAY to review your security. Lock your vehicles, lock your doors, know if your neighbours are away and put your car keys out of sight. I’ve previously mentioned weapons security and surrendering those weapons not needed. Weapons licenses are not getting any cheaper. When was the last time you used your weapon? Are they safely stored when you are not in your home? If they are heirlooms have you considered rendering them inoperable? There is still an amnesty in place for people wishing to surrender firearms in their possession which they are not legally entitled to possess. If you have weapons you’d like to be rid of please contact police link on 131444 to make an appointment for Police to come and collect. We would much rather have possession of the weapons where they will be destroyed rather than to fall into the hands of criminal groups. Regards Tony Jacobs Sgt 4006515

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and the official Golf Competition calendar ends Saturday 26th November. There is no need to get withdrawal symptoms as there will still be a summer competition every Saturday and of course Bushranger’s every Sunday if you wish to play competition. The year has been a very successful one for Mystic Sands with many players representing the Club far and wide. Special mentions to Emma and Robert Perkins who really did thousands of Kms travelling including Sarina, Hugenden, Collinsville and everywhere in between. All the effort was worth it as Emma won North Qld Golfer of the year Order of Merit for A Grade by some 700 points. Our ladies captain Megan Jeffree finished 13th which also was a fine effort. B grade NQ golfer of the year, Order of Merit. Mystic Sands again had Teresa Jewell 14th and Anja Devereaux 20th. C Grade Order of Merit Rhonda Gurd flew the flag again coming 8th Well played Ladies.

Grade Teams. Playing 45 holes of golf over 2 days was a big effort and our C grade Team were winners of our first pennant in many a year. The flag is proudly displayed above the bar for all to see. Our Ladies took on Home Hill the following weekend and won 5 games to 1 and also have a Pennant Flag to be very proud of. It is great to see a steady flow of new members joining the Club with new residents in the area and some people realising what the Club and Course has to offer and joining from Townsville suburbs too. Special thanks to everyone involved at the Club for all your time in making things happen and allowing others to enjoy themselves . Mick and his team do an awesome job presenting the Course to its finest every day. Many visitors commented on the marked improvements to the course and its daily challenges.

Not to be out done Robert Perkins won B Grade order of Merit for North Qld Golfer of the Year. Congratulation Perko

Next year again will see improvements, with solar pumps for irrigation being the biggest challenge. Here’s hoping the bores have good quality water for the fairways.

October was a very special month for the Club, hosting Mens and Ladies pennants, with local business hosting clubs from around the area. Our men filled 4 teams including A, B and 2 C

Wishing all our Members, Social Golfers and regulars a very happy Festive Season and here’s hoping 2023 bring us all good health, happiness and even better golf!
