Some of this month’s news is an overflow from August’s Rag as I was on leave when August was printed. The not so secret garden makeover - Thanks to the Paces for the mulch and its delivery, your generosity is always very much appreciated and thank you to all who donated plants and/ or your time assisting with this project. The effect has been astounding. It was only after the event that I noticed people did offer their assistance via facebook. My apologies for not checking it earlier; it was heart-warming to learn of your offers of assistance as well. The Origami children’s session was well attended with many animals and other shapes attempted. Thanks to Natasha and Geri for teaching us this art. The Adult Origami history session was not as well attended however the Ladies who did attend enjoyed the session immensely. The session gave a wonderful insight into how Origami came to be the craft it is today especially when it is discovered that many construction engineers become masters of origami to learn how to design and build stronger but more creatively pleasing buildings. The Garden Group’s activity for August was to attend the Townsville Garden Expo at Riverway. If past Expos are to go by there will be plenty to see and buy for your garden. The RTC can now offer a limited supply Food Relief Parcels. Should you or someone you know be doing it a bit tough – there is no need to go without food. All that needs to be done to get yourselves a Food Relief Parcel is to give the RTC a call and complete an application form. No one ever needs to go hungry. This program is in partnership with NOTCH in Deeragun. BLOODS are now being collected at the Balgal Beach Medical Centre on a Wednesday mornings from 8.30am–12noon. If this time is well patronised, we’ll get another day; if we don’t use it, we’ll lose it! The Pineapple Festival organisation is almost complete. There are so many attractions to keep everyone entertained all day. There is fantastic music by our local entertainers, a Combined Emergency Services rescue demonstration involving the rescue of people from a wrecked car. The Desert Competition, Ukulele players and workshop, a record number of stallholders and food vendors. Kid’s Korner will be in full swing with fairy floss, Jumping Castle, Pony Rides, petting zoo, Laser Skirmish, Polly’s Sand Craft and Face Painting. Please note that all the kid’s activities are completely free. Please keep your change in your pockets for all the other fantastic goodies being sold by our stallholders. Thanks in advance to the Pineapple Festival Organising Committee for your time and diligence – it is not an easy job to gather all the threads together to create this fantastic event. Pinefest Road Blockage Notification – please be advised that Mystic Avenue from Community Crescent to the Golf Resort will be closed from 9am – 10am for the purpose of the Float Parade that is the commencement of the Pineapple Festival. Festival Parking will on Balgal Beach Road – Harvey’s Property – Please follow all the parking instructions from the attendants on the day. Disability parking will be at the Community Centre. The Seniors’ have had a very busy month for August – such as attending the Ingham Seniors Luncheon, attending the Expo and then the Townsville City Council Seniors Luncheon. It was good to hear that Kerrie C was Ok after a medical scare at the Luncheon. COAST CARE GROUP – we are attempting to resurrect the Coast Care Group – please, anyone interested in seeing our Balgal Beach foreshore in a more natural condition call me on 47707855, so we can get you together again. Due to School Holiday commitments the AGM has had to be moved to the new date of 3 October starting at 7pm at the Community Centre. All RaDCA Members are welcome to attend. The Art Expo has a new date of 21 October – get your “Pineapples” creations together and nominate, Application forms are in this Rolly Rag. On the same day we are organising another Carboot sale, just in time for “Spring Cleaning”. And also on the same day we are also putting together a program to replace number plate screws and bolts with security locking screws/Bolts to prevent numberplate theft. Did you know that over 20,000 numberplates are stolen each year in Qld and many are often used in criminal activities eg fuel theft and toll fee avoidance. Thank goodness we do not have any toll roads in NQ as yet, there are enough plates being stolen locally without that added cause. The cost will be $5 per vehicle, the security screws fitted by a volunteer. Please book your vehicle by calling Chris on 47707855 so we have an idea of the number of screws we need to purchase. Broadband for Seniors has become very busy as of late. Thank you Narelle for your expertise and ability to explain intricacies of the technical world to our Seniors. To access the Broadband for Seniors program please call the RTC and book your time. (please note: you do not have to be a Senior to access this program) anyone with a technical issue can call and make an appointment. Narelle is available on Tuesdays from 9.30am and depending on the number booked in a session of 40mins to 1 hour is offered. Are you coming to the Pineapple Festival? See you there… As always take care - Chris

Gidday Rollingstone “SEPTEMBER???” What do you mean “SEPTEMBER”? When did that happen? Whose idea was it to let a whole 8 months get past in the space of a few weeks? Why didn’t someone tell me? It’s not supposed to be this late in the year yet. I’ve still got Easter eggs hidden for myself … I haven’t had the chance to prepare for turning 57… isn’t there another State of Origin game yet?... I still have to find a high school that accepts terrorists – OH MY GOD… she’s going to High School next year. OK… deep breath… Let’s begin with the BIG news story of the day… drum roll please… introducing the Rollingstone Police Stations newest acquisition… the person taking over the responsibility for making Sutto and I look good… the person who has to make sense of all the stuff that I can’t make sense of… the person stepping up to fill Miss Christine’s shoes as the unofficial Officer in Charge… please meet Miss Alissa. It’s actually almost old news by now (I missed a few Rolly Rags… sorry) but Miss Christine has moved on to greener pastures – almost literally – except they’re not pastures as much as they’re fairways and greens. She will undoubtedly do well and be a raging success in her new role. . I’ll be doing a frank and hard hitting interview with Miss Alissa in the near future so I can bring you all the relevant information on our new staff member – all the important stuff – footy club preference, State of Origin allegiances, chicken salt or plain salt – all the good stuff. In the meantime, she’ll be the smiling face at the counter and the voice on the end of the phone when you call. Say gidday. And I suppose that now is as good a time as ever to sort out our new office hours. Our front door will be open for business Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9.00am to 3.30pm. And we’ll still be doing all the usual things – rego’s, weapons… rego’s. And while we’re discussing all things “Police” (and before I wander off onto something completely irrelevant) let’s just clarify a few things that might have slipped past some of our readers in recent times: There are two (2) coppers here at Rollingstone – me (tall, bald, grey beard, ruggedly good looking) and Sutto (one of the rare ‘ginger ninja’ breed who is approachable and won’t rip your head off until he knows you absolutely deserve it). However… there are others who dress like us and carry many of the same toys, who visit this part of the world on an irregular basis, without warning… who may suffer from a complete lack of sense of humour. They will do their best to blend in with the humans, but be prepared – they will arrive without fanfare, go through the place like a bad curry and fade into the ether like a NSW State of Origin campaign. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. There are two (2) coppers here at Rollingstone (read the bit from No., 1) – not 4 or 6. Please be patient with us if we can’t get to your problem straight away. We usually work as a ‘single officer patrol’ and we have to prioritise the calls we get – the bigger and badder the problem – it bumps up that list. The other thing to remember is that we try to cover ground from Leichhardt Creek to about Bambaroo and nearly out to the Burdekin River as well as the beaches from south of Toomulla to north of Insulator Creek. If we can’t get to you because we’re too far away or tied up with another job, you might be attended to by another crew from Town or Ingham (and the associated ‘bad curry’ patrols). Social media… (insert heavy sigh here). Please, please, please – think about what you post BEFORE you tap the button and share it with the world – or anyone for that matter. “Are you entitled to your opinion?” – yes. “Can anyone tell you NOT to post a comment?” – probably not. “Can there be consequences to the things you post?” – HELL YES!!! Nothing you ever post on social media ever really disappears for ever, especially photos – even if you or an administrator deletes it – it can still be recovered. Think about that. And while you’re deep in thought – you can’t make a complaint to the police or expect the police to take action about something, by posting it on social media – it doesn’t work that way. With all our flash whiz-bang technology, we can’t take too much notice of what goes on social media. And that, as they say in the classics, is that. I can’t finish without telling you how very proud I am of you for the way you’ve rallied around some of the families out here who have been struck by tragedy in the past few weeks. School communities who have rallied around families and individual children, community associations and other support groups who have donated not only goods and money, but time and effort to let others breathe a little easier and cope with pain and loss… and individual people who have opened their homes and hearts to try and ease confusion and uncertainty – you are all legends and my heroes. Stay safe……….Goughy P6

Chris Richardson broke her leg so she could go out in sympathy with husband, Bob, who is booked in for heart surgery! Margaret Hammelswang has also had surgery - on her knee. Stuart Humphreys wishing you a speedy recovery after a fall. Have asked around but seems, although “the wog” (notice nobody gets a cold these days – it’s always “the wog”) is raging, there’re few debilitated which is great to hear! BLOODS are now being done/collected/taken at the local Medical Centre on a Wednesday morning between 8.30am – 12 noon. If it’s well patronised, we’ll get another day and if we don’t use it, we’ll lose it! A new carpet has gone down on the stage in the Hall. It’ll take a while to settle but should last for a few years to come. Per courtesy of the Op Shop girls, Brian Knight and Gordon Payne, it’s cost nothing – sometimes we get a win! All our Leases have finally been processed and finalised by Council and we can now look to putting in place the Railway Station Display along with improvements to the Oval – but not until after we’ve had some rain, we’ve been instructed. Our AGM IS NOW ON Tuesday October 3rd @ 7pm at the Hall. Art & Craft Exhibition now scheduled for Saturday, October 21st. Once again the “Phantom Food Thief” has struck at the Hall and this time the Seniors’ Sausage Rolls have been taken from the freezer. Unfortunately, we’ve no idea who does this from time to time, but if ever we find out, they’ll never again be welcome at the Community Centre. We would ask all users to mark their items in the freezer and fridge – although that’ll not dissuade whoever wants to remove them – and if they are used by another Group, at least have the decency to replace them ASAP. Yet another poor attendance at a wonderful Vietnam Veterans’ Service at the Cenotaph at the beachfront. It really does make one so very sad that there’s still such little recognition of those returned men who helped protect our country during the Vietnam conflict. We know it’s a week day, but there’re lots of folks who live locally who don’t work. SELFISHNESS is the root of all that is heartless and bad in the world; (tongue-in-cheek)................there’s no interest like self-interest; some women actually believe that happiness is being pretty; all evil is rooted in the abuse of power. Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza”.

What Causes Dry Skin? Dry skin can be caused by environmental factors, dehydration, and failure of the body’s built-in moisturising mechanism (The Stratum Corneum). Environmental Factors include Dryness in the air, Heaters, Air conditioning, Chlorinated pools, Air travel, Hot showers and baths. Dehydration can be due to not drinking enough water especially during winter when reaching for a hot cuppa is more appealing. Failure of the body’s built in moisturising mechanism – When this mechanism isn’t performing optimally, the skin becomes lacking in moisture and can become parched and aged. Skin will appear dull, especially on the cheeks and on the fragile skin around the eyes. Top Ten Winter Skin Savers 1.Give your hydration levels a helping hand by drinking plenty of water 2. Avoid “TOO HOT” Showers and baths 3. Be ingredient aware. Avoid harsh detergents by opting for hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and soap free face, hand and body products 4. Seal in moisture by slathering your skin in emollients straight after your shower or bath. 5. Use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air. 6. Moisturise morning and night and consider changing from a lotion to a cream. 7. Safeguard skin against winter sun with a high SPF (eg 30+ or 50+) sunscreen. 8. Wear gloves when outside to protect the hands from the harsh winter elements but steer clear of wool, which can cause irritation. 9. Grease up your hands and feet. The skin on your hands and feet is tougher so don’t hold back on the rich cream. 10. Don’t encourage lazy lips: use a lip moisturiser only when needed Other helpful tips to keep your skin hydrated from the inside Eat plenty of essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3 (found in avocado and oily fish) and omega-6 (found in nuts, wholegrains and flaxseed oil) which keep skin hydrated and clarified Drink plenty of water. Your skin will thank you for it. P 12

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. I was remiss in my last Club article when I neglected to welcome back to paradise past Club President Garry Luff and his new lovely bride Koy. Garry moved to Richmond out west a couple of years ago to take on a new position but has now retired, well, semi-retired from the work force. Welcome home Garry and Koy.
Dickie’s Fishing News. Gidday folks, well we have had a few good boating days during
indicating good catches of queen fish in and around Rattlesnake and Herald Islands, with the Paluma Shoals producing good grunter, nannygai and a few coral trout. The northern creeks The Club BBQ held on 28 July in blistery cold conditions including Taylors Beach, Crystal, Ollera and Scrubby Creeks attracted a big roll up of members and visitors. Details of the annual Member for Hinchinbrook Inter-Club Fishing Challenge should soon be released from the Minister’s office. Toomulla Beach Fishing Club has won the senior trophy for the past 12 years so we need a huge effort from you all this year to get this piece of silverware into our trophy cabinet. Our juniors have blitzed the field for about the past 10 years so we know where our fishing talents lay. At the completion of the challenge, a very pleasant presentation dinner is held at Toomulla with excellent food, a pleasant setting, courtesy bus etc. Your attendance is highly recommended so jot the date down behind the dunny door when the details are released. You don’t have to have participated in the Challenge to attend the dinner; all Club Members are welcome to attend. P14
Since our Club’s representation to our local Councillor about the unsafe condition of the Fishermans Landing boat ramp, some work was eventually undertaken by council however, I am advised by persons much wiser than I on these matters that the work done still did not completely eliminate the danger present when using the ramp so again I say, exercise caution. Now on a personal note, Di and I will not be putting ourselves forward for re-election at the next AGM on 25 August. After 5 years on the committee we need a break so don’t look for the motorhome in the garage after September, we will be somewhere else. We thank most sincerely all members past and present for their support, friendship and encouragement during our
time on the committee and we especially thank those committee members who helped us out when we needed you there. We wish the new committee well and new successes during their term. I shall carry on doing the Rolly Rag article until another volunteer comes along or I go insane; whichever comes first. Finally, I thank Di for her encouragement and understanding during my tantrums, dummy spits and sulks whilst Secretary of this great little club; no wonder on 22 September we have been happily married for 50 years. Happy Anniversary my love!! Until next month, Ninger

The dry weather is affecting all of us, especially the animals as they are really suffering. Many are struggling and losing their lives because we are encroaching more and more on their habitat. Just look on the outskirts of Townsville and you will see what I mean. We have had a lot of mother killed on the road and by dogs as they are trying to get to food and water. We have also found that a lot of the babes are not of a viable size which means they are way too young and under developed to survive. Wild life caring sure aint for the faint hearted. It can be downright depressing until the next one comes in. I had a wonderful surprise the other day when a young couple rang me about a baby “pademelon ”they had found with its dead mother on the road. It is not often that these little creatures come into care around here. They are very small macropods and grow to around 2kg, extremely tiny when young. I handed him over to our “pinkie” carer until he is over the delicate stage but what a thrill to see such a tiny critter. This makes up for all the losses. Another thing that makes up for the losses is the wonderful people who phone the wildlife phone and report injured animals, these people make our day, as like us they do not want to see anything suffer. Two young ladies from Bluewater waited at the side of the road with a very badly injured wallaby the other night until we could get there. This makes it so easy for us to locate the animal and saves minutes looking in the wrong area. They are true angels, thank you. People drive for miles to bring an animal into care, this is what makes it worthwhile. To know that there are people out there who care and help the best way they know how. I appreciate anyone who saves my fuel, as I never know when I need a full tank as often get rescue calls and normally at night. Yes, we also go out and do rescue calls when need be, these are injured animals that need attention and possible euthanizing. On the bright side, we are hoping that any orphans coming in will be of an age to survive and we will get more people caring. P20
Health Benefits of PINEAPPLE
by Benita of Entire Wellbeing
Pineapple belongs to the Bromeliaceae family, from which one of the most important health promoting compounds , the enzyme bromelian was named. Bromelain is in the stem and core of the fruit. Bromelain exhibits various anti-inflammatory activities. Can act as an adjutant therapeutic approach in the treatment of chronic inflammatory, malignant and autoimmune diseases. Accelerates wound healing, breaks down cholesterol plagues, good for cardiovascular and circulatory functions, and an immune modulator. Bromelain is used in therapeutic uses like allergic airway disease or asthma, athletic injuries, arthritic stiffness or pain, bronchitis, cholesterol deposits, IBD, oedema, breast cancer, sinusitis and the list goes on. (Osiecki,2014,p.225-226). Pineapple also contains lots of the water soluble antioxidant Vitamin C, which is vital for proper function of the immune system to help prevent infections, colds and flu’s. It is an excellent source of the mineral manganese which is essential cofactor in energy production and antioxidant defences. Also has a good source of thiamin a B vitamin that acts as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions central to energy production. Pineapple and fruit in general protects against Mucular degeneration which is the primary cause of vision loss in older adults. One study showed 3 serves of fruit per day was protective against the vision destroying disease. 1 cup or 165g of pineapple contains 83 calories and is a medium GI fruit. It contains various % of the following, recommended daily intake of : Vitamin C - 105% , Manganese - 77%,, Copper - 20%,Vitamin B 6 - 11%, Vitamin B1 or thiamine - 11%, Fibre - 9%, Folate - 7%, Pantothenic acid - 7% One study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food chemistry has found that cutting and chilling your pineapple does not significantly affect its nutritional value even up to 6-9 days. So go ahead and make that fruit salad, juice or smoothie. (Theworldshealthiestfoods) One of my favourite smoothie recipes with pineapple: Pineapple Turmeric Smoothie Recipe 1 cup almond or coconut milk, 1/2 cup frozen pineapple , 1 fresh banana, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1/2

Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G.Day All, Our AGM went well; all the committee were returned unchanged! We had hoped there would be some new faces, the current committee has been in office for a long time now and some new blood with new ideas would have been welcome. We played Team Golf Putting, it was absolutely hilarious, sneaky Tom replaced one ball with a trick ball which was weighted and went all over the place making it hard to control. We didn’t have any winners turn up for the gold. HA. HA. Rhonda Muller won the Lound’s Seafood Raffle. Lound’s have the best seafood in town. IT’S TOP STUFF. Tommy Ruddick won fish of the month with a 120cm Blue Spot Cod which he released. Congratulations Tom. Our BBQ was great thanks to the cooks and kitchen crew, the sweets were spot on. CAN’T RESIST no matter how hard I try. Ken Turner had free passes to the Townsville Cultural Fest and quite a few members attended. It was fantastic with a huge crowd. TOP entertainment and food. We are planning a fishing trip to Cattle Creek aboard ROSIE for when our Judyana gets back home. IT’S A BEAUT DAY OUT. Our next get together is our FATHERS DAY celebration at Ken Turners place. It is always a yummy Stew Night. REMEMBER.... BRING YOUR BOWL, CUTLERY AND CHAIR BYO drinks and a big appetite. Everybody welcome, visitors meals are $10 children under 12 are free. Members are always free. Two members have had operations and are now home. Hope you are both doing well. STAY SAFE AND KEEP SMILING

Rollingstone and District Leos Hi there folks. It’s been a while since we put an article in, so I thought we should give you a run down of what’s coming up for Rollingstone Leos. PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL... WOW, ALREADY?! Ah yes, the all important Rollingstone Pineapple Festival is here again. This, as we all know, has been the biggest event on this community’s calendar for some years now and it continues to grow. Last year was massive... the biggest we’ve ever seen! And we expect much the same in 2017. We will be there again this year selling water and soft drinks on behalf of RADCA and we’ll also be selling Hot-dogs too. We hope to see you all there for what is sure to be another successful Pineapple Festival! HYGIENE PACKS FOR PNG Just putting this one out there. It’s most certainly something that we’ll be asking your help with. During September, as part of their program, the Junior Leos at Rollingstone State School, will be seeking donations of small healthcare items (soap, washers, toothbrushes/paste, hair combs etc.). Rollingstone Leos Club and the Rollingstone Lions Club will also be supporting this initiative, with all items donated being sent to our nearest neighbour Papua New Guinea for distribution through the Lions Nursing Mothers program. This Lions Project provides support for expectant and new mothers living in remote rural and poverty stricken areas in PNG. If you would like to support this initiative, your donations may be left in our collection box at the Rollingstone Community Centre. All items will be very much welcomed by our friends in PNG Leos – Lets Enjoy Ourselves:

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc. Hi Folks, What a month, this club is in top gear in preparation for our major event on the calendar: THE PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL! There will be 80 stalls, 14 food vendors, coffee carts, displays, Kids Korner, arena games and so much more! This year, we have loads of parking very close to the venue. The entrance will be on Balgal Beach Rd and traffic will be directed to Warren Harvey’s property. Last year water and shade were a major issue and we have certainly rectified these issues this year. The stage size has been increased and under shade with a much improved sound system. I hope that we see a variety of floats in the parade as this is generally a good indication of the passion people feel for our Pineapple Festival. There will be an A Grade list of entertainers for your enjoyment. A big part of the preparation is erecting 2 large marquees. These will be put in place 1 week prior and if anyone could please volunteer contact me on 0412 396 450. This would be very much appreciated! Looking forward to seeing you all at THE PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL and make sure you invite all your friends and family as it will be a day to remember!!! See you there ….Dowie 0412396450

R.S.L.NEWS A beautiful morning for our Vietnam Veterans’ Day service. Thank you to those locals and holiday makers who attended. A short but very meaningful service expressed through the speech of the guest speaker, LT David Downham. Thank you to WO2 Jason Harton, SSM of 9 TRPT SQN, who organised the Catafalque Party ably led by CPL Jarrod Bailey. The troops said they enjoyed being able to wear their dress uniform, as they had just participated in the joint training operation at Shoalwater Bay. We were also privileged to have a bugler, CPL Justin Kennedy from the Army Band. Thank you to members of the RSL who assisted in setting up. We were down a few due to illness and holidaying, but Dowie, Bruce and Tony G collected the gear, set up and then were assisted by members of the Catafalque Party with packing up. This was much appreciated by the RSL committee. MC John Muller performed his normal duties, as well as admirably standing in for our Padre, Bob Richardson, who is unwell at this stage. We wish Bob all the best for his operation and recovery. After the service we adjourned to the Mystic Sands Golf Club and enjoyed nibblies and a drink. Thanks to Charlie, Chris and Brenda for their great service. Brenda was also on the ball, noticing we needed to raise an Australian flag for this special day. Thanks Brenda for flying the flags. Jan and Ewan sold a meat tray raffle and the lucky winner was Brian B, a visitor on holidays. On August 11th our Goose Club jackpot of $220 went off to Faye T, with number 20. Many people commented on how pleased they were to see Faye win as she works enthusiastically and tirelessly for a number of clubs in our community. Congratulations Faye. Unfortunately for Linda and Dave B, they were at a wedding on the 18th and missed the jackpot of $100. They are at the club on most Friday nights and are great supporters of the RSL, but that’s the way it goes. On Saturday we held the Vietnam Veterans’ Day Golf competition at Mystic Sands. Thirty players participated and enjoyed a sausage sizzle following the event. However, our American Aussie Cheyenne, beckoned for all to “Come and get your hotdog, roll and ketchup”. Cheyenne has fitted in very well to the new team at the golf club. Hope Emma is feeling better soon. Winners of the competition were: Ladies- Rhonda Gurd, with Theresa Jewell runner-up, and Men- Richard Gammie 39 points on a count-back from Alan Jeffers. Rhonda, Theresa and Alan are members of the RSL, along with a number of the other golfers. Thank you to Mystic Sands Golf Inc and Mystic Sands management for the day. Lovely weather and I desperately wanted to play but need to listen to the doctor’s advice. It was a pleasant surprise to have our State MP, Andrew Cripps, attend the service on Friday. Andrew said he had other engagements but seeing the notice on Facebook, decided to make some time to get there. Looking at Andrew’s Facebook presentations, which outline his itinerary over time, I very much admire the effort he puts into attending local events in his electorate. So many politicians are there at election time but we see very little of them in the mean time. Thank you Andrew for attending the service and assisting with presentations back at the golf club. We had a wonderful Christmas Party last year and are hoping many members can attend again this year. Improvements at the golf club should ensure a great night, so please note in your diaries: Saturday, 9th December for the RSL Christmas Party at the Mystic Sands Golf Club. More information at a later date. That’s about it from me for the spring month of September. Where did winter go? More like, what winter? We have been much luckier than those living down south. Actually I rang Colin N, an RSL social member, in Adelaide yesterday, and he said it was freezing. Thank you to many of the “grey-nomads” who have supported us in the Goose Club and raffles over the past couple of months. They are getting ready to head back but are saying what a lovely time they have had with beautiful weather and the great improvements at the golf club. For those who have not been in the best of health we wish you a speedy recovery. Please remember if you know of any RSL member needing help or who has been admitted to hospital, our committee would like assist where we can.. Cheers, Rhonda C.

Natures Notes Fancy that! We all came from algae 500 billion years ago. As has happened in Paluma and surrounds, your wildlife around Rollingstone/Balgal will diminish in numbers. It may also mean the total loss of some species of birds and mammals. This is because of the rise in human population and the greater number of vehicles on our roadways. So we need more National Parks in all our different environments. Are there any beaches or other coastal environments near you protected other than Clemant State Forest? Townsville and surrounds has had the hottest July for 100 years. Rollingstone/ Balgal and Paluma must be close to this record, so it is no surprise that we have seen Red-bellied Black Snakes and pythons on our roads and properties lately. Whether it is the unusually high temperatures or not, the local Paluma Satin Bowerbirds in my backyard are preparing the old bower grounds to build new bowers. I’ll let you know if the birds finish so early in the year. Are your Bowerbirds starting to renew their bowers? If you are new to the Rollingstone/Balgal area and are settling there, you should get Volume 32 Number 4 issue of the Australian Zoologist which contains a broad article on the Vertebrate Fauna on the Clemant State Forest Lowlands which are adjacent to your area. That article gives you a broad account of the birds, mammals and reptiles of your area –a good starting point. Rollingstone & District Seniors Hello, by the time this comes out the Seniors Expo and the Seniors Luncheon will be all over for another year. The Seniors also travelled to Ingham to celebrate Seniors Week with a morning tea. Now we have the Pineapple Festival coming up fast. It will be fun with great food and stalls, so come along and join us. There will be plenty of entertainment for all ages, and I do mean ALL ages. So put the good gear on and saunter down and have fun, fun, fun. Those of you who can spare a few minutes to help out at the Seniors Stall, do feel free to contact Wendy Clark who is supervising the stall this year and tell her when you can be of assistance. Be greatly appreciated as there is so much to see around the oval that we want everyone to go see for themselves this year. Also get crackin’ with the potting and planting and baking and making for the stall. We do not have the markets any more so this is one of the few times you will ever be asked to help out. We have the Seniors Games coming up on the Tuesday 5th so would like to see a good gathering of the clan. We plan to put on a hot lunch for those interested at $15 pp with dessert of course! Contact Rhonda or Gaye for numbers please. We will be having two great raffles. The Banjo Paterson night went off well with over 60 people attending to enjoy some of Banjo’s works. The bingo is cancelled for September due to the Pineapple Festival as there is too much work to be done before and afte, so roll up in October instead. We had the best crowd this month, big thanks to our regulars who are so loyal and big hello to our new comers and hope to see you back again and again for our bit of fun. The carpet bowls are still rolling and cursing along, oops cruising along I meant. The board games are extending with more to play, so good for the brain. They say if you don’t use it you lose it. Line dancing is a great way to get fit and have some fun, no old people here, all young lasses. For those who need to peruse a book before the nanny nap overpowers them then there is plenty of scope at the Library, keeps the mind active once more until cell rejuvenation takes over. Check out the diary page of this Rolly Rag to see all that there is to do in our paradise. Catch ya all later.

ALICE RIVER SCOUT GROUP VISIT On Wednesday 2 August, I had the opportunity to visit the Alice River Scout Group at Rupertswood. This is an active group of Joeys, Cubs and Scouts with some dedicated Leaders and keen Ventures’ who are committed to these young people. The Scouting Movement is 110 years old this year, having been founded in 1907. Thanks very much for the kind invitation! NORTHERN BEACHES LAC AGM On Wed 2 August, I called in to the Annual General Meeting for the Northern Beaches Local Ambulance Committee. This group of volunteers support the Queensland Ambulance Service Officers based at the Northern Beaches Ambulance Station at Black River, north of Townsville. I was involved in establishing the LAC to support the Northern Beaches Ambulance Station in 2015. NORTH SHORE PRIMARY SCHOOL COMMUNITY MEETING On Thursday 3 August, I attended the first community information meeting for the new state primary school being built at North Shore. A large crowd of parents and family members of prospective students were in attendance, where our new Principal, Patrick McDonnell, introduced himself. The school is due to open for Semester 1, 2018. Construction work is currently on track. OPEN DAY, WONDERLAND STATION, ALICE RIVER On Sunday 13 August I attended the Bush Poets Breakfast at Geoff and Vicki Toomby's Wonderland Station at Alice River. The program included country music, dog handling, whip cracking and of course, horsemanship. I have known Geoff and Vicki for 12 years and I'm proud of the way they have built up their rural training facility, a project which I have strongly supported. HELP BRING STATE OF ORIGIN TO NORTH QLD The LNP has announced an LNP Government would submit a bid to bring a State of Origin game to Townsville in 2020 or 2021. As a broken down old front-row forward, I’m excited about the prospect of a State of Origin game in Townsville in the near future. You can help build support to bring State of Origin to North Queensland by signing the petition at www.northqldorigin.com.au.
Centrelink Access Point at the Community Centre Centrelink provides phone, fax and photocopier for individuals wanting to access Centrelink services. If you want to make a claim or an enquiry please come and make use of the services available through the Access Point. Luke has had a pretty rough time of things with his father tragically passing away. Luke found his dad and called 000 to seek urgent medical attention. His bravery through this time was incredible . Senior Sargent Shaun Sutton was first on the scene and conducted CPR until the ambulance arrived. Luke lost his Dad and a few days later someone stole Lukes bike . In stepped Rollingstone police, Saints Rotary Club and Toys R Us Townsville who organised a new bike for Luke… So many heroes!
Pineapple juice - is it the hangover cure we need? Short of not drinking, it's the best thing we have . So science has told us that pear juice can ward off a hangover – but only if you drink it in advance. Mmm. So what about all those impromptu drinking sessions you’re not planning on? Are we meant to be drinking pear juice 24/7, science? No, we’re not. If you’ve already imbibed a little too much (and nobody’s judging round these parts), the trick is to drink pineapple juice to get rid of your hangover. Our online editor, who drinks A LOT, swears by it. Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelain, which eases digestion and can reduce pressure on the liver. (Your poor, poor long-suffering liver). It’s also good for replacing electrolytes and hydrating you – plus it tastes better than pear juice.

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hi there everyone, I am very proud of the students at our fantastic school and the improvements they continue to show in the learning. Our 2017 NAPLAN results show that the year 5 students improved in four out of the five areas that the test covers. This is extremely pleasing, but we strive to aim high and continually improve. We have refined our processes involved with our teaching of reading and continue to implement researched based proven and effective teaching strategies. These strategies aim to make students assessment literate so that they can take control of their learning and are clear about what they need to demonstrate to be successful learners. I was also very proud of our year 6 students’ behaviour when they recently attended Northern Beaches State High School for their transition day. High school staff repeatedly commented on what a great bunch of students we have. I have to agree with them! I would like to publicly thank Mark and Kerri-Anne Fitzsimmons, Dowie and Jonesy for their hard work in constructing our new sand pit and long jump pit on the weekend. The students are already thoroughly enjoying playing in the sand pit. Prep Enrolments for 2018 – Whilst it may seem like a long time away, schools require as much notice as possible to ensure a successful transition to school for beginning students. With this in mind, if you or anyone you know is intending to enrol their child in Prep at Rollingstone State School for 2018, I encourage you to come to the office to collect an enrolment pack. I would love to have the opportunity to meet you and hear about how we can best support your child’s transition to school. I’d also appreciate the opportunity to tell you more about the wonderful things happening at our great school. TAG Rolly - To assist with the transition to school, the school runs a playgroup that meets every Tuesday from 9am – 11am (TAG Rolly). I encourage all parents with children who are not yet school age to attend. It’s a lot of fun and can really improve the outcomes for children when they commence formal education. I hope to see you there!

AUGUST OUT AND ABOUT
Aquarobics ladies enjoying cake & coffee at Mystic
The Gottani Sisters at Mystic Sands Golf Resort
Kynan Figg we wish you every strength on your journey to heal after your horrific accident on 11th August where you lost your Dad. You are a very strong and brave boy!
Luke's story is on page 31. Good on you Luke and Shaun and Goughy . We live in a great community thanks to our boys in blue!
There is a Go Fund Me page if anyone would like to help this family, Casey and her 8 children to cope without their dad. This is a local family who need all the support they can get. See Lions Rollingstone or Balgal Beach News FB pages.
