WOW!! What a month was September! The Seniors Plant Display was just what the Doctor ordered and weren’t there some awesome potted plants and flower displays. Congratulations to Rain Sinclair-Dimech and Deb Calder for their People’s Choice Best Potted Plant and Best Flower Arrangement awards. The incredibly special things about these two winners are that one is only 9 years of age and the other used live fish in her display. Well done, girls! Carboot Sale – It was interesting to hold a small to medium sized public event during Covid – lots of learning was done. We apologise to those sellers who rang at the last minute after we decided to cap the number to 40. All the sellers seemed to do well which is the aim of the day. Thank you to all those who came along, I hope you had luck finding that bargain. We are hopefully going back to our normal times of June and October next year, Covid restrictions permitting. On this note, I would like to give a big thank you to Mark E, Bob C and Michael F for your help on the day. Due to personal reasons, I could not see the full day out but left the Carboot sale feeling that it was in very capable hands. Thanks to Dan and Mon for the Coffee Van and to the Lions for putting on the food. Another Thank you to Aaron N and the Crocs Women’s A Grade Touch Football team for coming along for a training session at the same time, adding to the excitement and enjoyment of the day. It is nice to know that our field is getting recognition and hope more of Townsville’s Teams will take the opportunity to train out this way. Rollingstone Rag, October 2020

A@RT Art Exhibition – Art @ Rollingstone Team is what our local Artist group calls themselves. A@RT have presented the community with another highly successful Art Exhibition held over 3 days starting on 11 September with wine and nibblies on the Friday evening. They then opened Saturday and Sunday with more than double the number of art works on display than last year. A People’s Choice was awarded this year with the highest votes of 17, going to Anne Walsh for her B&W pastel of Afternoon Shadows and the runner up went to 2 paintings by the same artist Peter Simpson with 12 votes apiece. Congratulations Anne and Peter. Votes were well distributed across the full 80+ paintings on show. Welcome to all the newcomers to the Community and to those who have made themselves known to the Community Centre. We are here at the RTC to assist you with any enquiries you may have including Centrelink, administrative services, Internet access/Computer Café, and any referrals you may require. A Justice of the Peace is available between 8am and 4pm Mon-Fri. Just come in and say hello. We might even make you a cup of tea or coffee. Mini Community Libraries has been the topic of discussion on Facebook ???Did you know??? Rollingstone/Balgal Beach has the largest Community Library in Townsville (other than Council’s Libraries of course). Our Book Station (the old Rollingstone Railway Station) houses a huge collection of Fiction and NonFiction books, Biographies and jigsaw puzzles. These books are available to the public to borrow. We do ask that the books be returned when you have finished reading them so others may have the same enjoyment you have experienced. The books are community property, donated by locals into the care of the Community Association for all to enjoy. Shop, and again at the cheapest prices around. I can never say it enough – thank you to our volunteers. Your contribution to the smooth and safe running to all the activities of the Association is never taken for granted. To volunteer with the Association, you will be required to apply for a Child Safety Bluecard. Mark and I can help with this. The laws have changed as of the end of August and unfortunately the Bluecard needs to be approved before you can start volunteering with us. We made it a local rule for our association but now it is a Qld State Law known as “No Card No Start”. The AGM has come and gone, the previous Management Committee has been re-elected un-opposed and will work hard for the Community for the next 12 months. The sad part about the meeting was only 6 members attended. Yes, we had enough for a Quorum which allowed the meeting to go ahead but, really if you want a say in how the Association and the Centre is run attending the AGM is important. Alternatively, we would like to think you, as the members of the Association are happy with how the centre in being managed. A motion was posed and accepted to change the time of the AGM to a daytime meeting. We love member’s feedback – truly that is how we grow and get better at what we do. I will be on leave from Monday 5 October to Monday 2 November. Mark will be able to assist with any enquiries you have. Please come in before 1pm. Don’t forget about the Bubbles and Brushes on 8 October – pluck up the courage to pick up a brush………. Look after yourselves…you are the only ones who can and keep Covid Safe…………Cheers Chris.

It’s finally and it’s time to rejuvenate the Body! Hydration • Aim to drink plenty of water. Recommended Daily Intake is 8 Cups of fluid per day. • Hydration preps like Hydralyte help to aid in dehydration by replacing the electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and chloride, which help to retain fluid and maintain good nerve and muscle function.
Skincare • Make sure the water is not too hot when having a shower or bath. As nice as it feels it is one of the main causes for drying out you skin. • If you are suffering from dry, scaly, flaky skin use a soap free alternative to wash your skin. • Using a good moisturiser to help balance your skin. If you are feeling a little flat or you skin is crying out at you come and have a chat with Frank, Bec or Kristie to get body glowing.

Our Sick List isn’t good: Monika Schweir (still recovering from a Stroke some months ago); Geoff Ivett (Heart Episode); Don Pearson (Mild Stroke); Linda Birse (Cancer); Kim Gottani (2 lots of Surgery); Bruce Mills (Broken Leg). We can only pass on our commiserations and wish them the very best of everything for a complete and early recovery. Vale Cheryl Campbell (Ganley) who passed away recently. Cheryl was a great supporter of the Op Shop, so much so Cheryl asked for some of her goods to be donated to the Op Shop on her passing. Our thanks and thoughts are with Cheryl’s family. However, there are some happier stories: Bev Patterson has left town to start a new life on a small property out behind Bundaberg; Brad Gough is now officially retired and hopefully livin’ the dream; and our Centre Manager’s (Chrissie) Dad, Bernie Smith, celebrated his 90th Birthday during September. Colin Pace also celebrated a milestone birthday. Happy 80th Colin! We wish them all lots of Good Luck for a happy future.
• The Rollingstone Seniors’ Plant & Flower show was a huge success. Lots of folk coming and going. Lots of lovely plants and pottery on sale. Lots of entries in the competition and the standard and quality of them was gobsmacking. An absolute visual delight. And the winner of the Special Flower Display was our own Deb Calder (it was the one with the beautiful Orchid flowers and the real live fish); and Rain Sinclair-Dimech (all 9 years of her) won the Potted Plants section. Good stuff, girls. • There was morning tea on offer and a couple of other little bibs and bobs and it was just an all-round great morning. Look forward to another one next year. Congratulations to our local Seniors’ Group for a job well done. Something different for a change and well worthwhile. Thank you. • And, the Car Boot Sale/Art Exhibition/Touch Footy Training was also a wonderful success story! So much so that we’ve already had and are getting bookings for the next day, whenever that may be. 40 sellers booked in and then we capped it. Lots visiting the excellent Art Exhibition in the Big Hall, which was once again done with much panache and well worth a visit; and seeing the (newly treated) Oval being used for what it’s there for. We’re endeavouring to provide as per our Mission Statement which hopefully means we’re travelling in the right direction. • Our new and up-graded Security System has been installed at the (Rollingstone) Community Centre. It is soooo good; AND it's attached to not only the Centre computers, the Committee has it available to them on their home-based personal computers as well. There are 8 cameras tracking all parts of our responsibility. Just the ducks' nuts!! Thank you very, very much Gaming Community Benefits Fund......... • We’re noticing how grubby the roadside blackboards have become. The idea is that once your notice has reached its use-by date, it is your job to remove it – a bit of water and an old rag will do the job!! • We have engaged a Hairdresser to start permanent work in the Rollingstone Rag, October 2020
RTC once Carol and Trevor Phillips’s grand-daughter, Chloe, finishes up. We will post on Facebook and place an advert in the November Rag as to just what her times, day, etc., will be once that is all settled. Her name is Peta. She is from Bluewater and already looking after some of our residents.
• We held our AGM during September, and what a disappointment that was. We got a Quorum – just! Same Committee returned; obviously noone cares or is interested but that day will come cos we don’t live forever. In the meantime, we’ll poke along quietly until the first complaint comes our way………probably from someone who didn’t attend the AGM. However, Financials are all good and we’re managing to achieve, so it’s not all gloom, doom, and destruction. We’ve changed our Insurers and saved $4,000; by the end of this year, we hope to have the Oval finished for now with new Stage ‘n’ all; Railway Display completed; new Air Conditioners installed; new Solar Entrance Lights in place; Locality Signs also in place; a Tourist Brochure available to all travellers and those proposing to do so; and a 2-3 monthly Welcome to Community Luncheon organised. Fingers crossed it all goes to plan. All the while we’re keeping tabs on what is happening on our patch. Just so you know, we’re not sitting on our hands. • Recently, I read an historical book and it popped up on Facebook with numerous comments attached thereto, mostly complaining that they couldn’t get it in manuscript (book) form, only Kindle. I mentioned that I lived far away in NQ, Australia, but that our Library had it in book form, that I had read and enjoyed it and learned a lot and that I was now looking forward to the rest of the series. Well, surprise, surprise………. next day I get a contact from the Author herself, expressing her delight that her book had found its way to this side of the world. We chatted for a bit and I’ve no doubt I’ll hear from her again when she’s got more information about her contributions to the literary scene. Think I’ve gained a new BF . It really is a small world these days. • And before closing, I mustn’t neglect to thank our Mayor, our Divisional Councillor, and Council Officers for all their help and support when we fell into a big hole just before the Car Boot Sale day. Without their contribution and input, it would all have been a dismal failure. As it’s turned out, we’ve seen another happy, friendly local event. Big THANKS to EVERYONE who participated and/or attended. • Just a heads-up that CAROLS may not be happening this year in the form that we usually present it – COVID-19, and all that. However, we will be having a Home “LIGHTS” competition with First and Consolation prizes and we’ll run the bus for those who might like to utilize it. More information closer to the Christmas Season. • Chrissie goes on Holidays starting Monday, Oct. 5th and returning Monday, Nov. 2nd, so Mark will be on his own which may result in small waiting times when he’s busy dealing with an influx of customers! For when you get home late but need to get something on the table quickly: http://everydaygourmet.tv/recipes/quick-tomato-soup/ “Never argue with an idiot – people watching won’t be able to tell the difference.” Live well, love much, laugh often..... “Sancho Panza”. 12
ROLLINGSTONE SENIORS The Plant Display went better than expected. The People’s Choice prizes were awarded to 9 year old, Rain Sinclair-Dimech for best potted plant pot and to Debbie Calder for the best flower arrangement. Congrats to you both. The Seniors would like to thank everyone involved in the organising and for your attendance. The Seniors are looking at putting on a bit of a Do for the Melbourne Cup but as that is a bit of time away we will let you know details as they come to
hand. We are also organising a cake stall at the October Fisherman’s Landing Market day. Come along and buy yourselves a homemade treat. I know this is short but it is very sweet. Until November………talk to you then. Wendy
ROLLINGSTONE & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB G’Day Rollingstone We are conducting business and social nights at the Den as normal and still adhering to social distancing and sanitation. Our fundraising throughout the pandemic has been virtually non-existent however, our fortnightly darts nights have been well attended by members of the community. This has enabled us to interact with our community whilst having fun and making a few dollars on the nights. Our club was invited to conduct a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle under new strict guidelines imposed by Bunnings Headquarters. This activity went off without a hitch once again showing that we can adjust to any situation. Our last dinner meeting was very well attended, and we were privileged to have 2 guest speakers. The first being Nick Dametto, the State Member for Hinchinbrook and the second being the 2nd Vice District Governor PDG Michael MacLaren.
Rollingstone Rag, October 2020
We were given an update on community development in the electorate and an update on what is happening in our district. Individuals of the club have been assisting members of the community with various odd jobs. We supported the Art Show by running the bar. The Carboot Sale was very well attended and the girls in the kitchen cooked up a storm in support. The 2 trailers that were normally housed at the police station have now been relocated to the Lions’ Den. If you wish to use these contact me. To cover the cost of rego and maintenance, there will be a hire fee of $10.00 ½ day and $20.00 per day.
If anyone needs assistance with odd jobs please don’t hesitate to call me on 0412396450. Dowie

Les Hyland On Saturday morning, 12 September, friends gathered at the Rainforest Inn Paluma to congratulate Les Hyland on being short listed for the award of Townsville Senior Citizen of the year.
Mick Dametto and Margie Ryder came to share in the celebration, bringing with them a large, decorated cake which was a delicious addition to a sumptuous morning tea. To much applause, Margie presented Les with his award. The very popular Les is Paluma’s oldest resident but age does not appear to have slowed him down. For thirty-odd years he has worked tirelessly for the Paluma community and is still active in the SES and Rural Fire Brigade. For many years Les produced the Paluma newsletter, Turkey Talk, and most of you will remember him as your Paluma in the Clouds Contributor. Paluma is very proud of him
Restoration work on the Paluma Range road has commenced. To minimise inconvenience to road users, work is being undertaken at night. Gates will be closed to traffic between 6 pm and 6 am Monday’s to Thursday’s and 7 pm to 7am on Fridays. Work is expected to be completed by end of December. For any enquires, please contact TMR. As the weather warms, our creaky bones are telling us it is time to get back to the pool!
Unfortunately the Covid19 Virus has placed limitations on the use of the pool at the Rollingstone Beach Resort at the time of writing this article. We are currently unable to use the great facility until some Government restrictions are lifted. Looking forward to a lifting of these restraints soon! COMMUNITY ABUZZ WITH EVENTS September shaped up as a busy month for Rollingstone Community Centre, with several popular events to keep locals engaged. Local councillor Margie Ryder and I were honoured to meet with and celebrate some of our area’s talented artists at the Rollingstone Annual Art Exhibition. The paintings on display were absolutely stunning while the crowd enjoyed a night of art, conversation and a little bit of wine thanks to the Rollingstone Lions Club. A community car boot sale the following day had locals browsing a treasure trove of trinkets and treats as market stall holders came together to put on a great day at the Rollingstone Community Centre. Thank you to organisers of both events, it was great catching up and chatting with everyone. Rollingstone Rag, October 2020
There’s plenty of roadworks going on at the moment and I would like to take this opportunity to urge people to take care during this time. There have been far too many accidents over the last couple of weeks. As frustrating as things can be, it’s best to slow down and be patient. The short-term pain of the coming $107 million Townsville Northern Access Intersections Upgrade will all worth it. I’ll continue to lobby strongly for State road upgrades across Hinchinbrook. On another note, the Queensland State Election will be held on October 31. It’s been an honour to serve Hinchinbrook and the Rollingstone community over these past three years and I look forward to having another opportunity to do so. Working together, we can achieve great things and a prosperous future for North Queensland. Take care, Nick Dametto—MP Member for Hinchinbrook 16P 17

11th November- Venue TBA
Christmas Smoko
On a brighter note, we have had some rain and hopefully we will have more to come as the wet season heads our way. The creek will fill again and be safe to swim in. I love it when the trees have had a wash as the leaves seem to sparkle and shine, I reckon they welcome the rain as much as we do.
We are coming into this time of year when the native animals are on the move. This is due to the dry conditions which we all know about. That wind has been dreadful for drying out the yard. Also it is springtime when things get frisky and the guys go chasing the gals regardless of welcome or not. Only this Until next time, take care and be safe. morning I have had 1 fatality where a buck was chasing a doe Cheers, Gaye and she got hit by a car. Broken legs so had to euthanise. These things happen, but it is the fact that the driver does not stop or even telephone/tx a wildlife carer to go get the animal. This was 7.30ish and 2 houses from me. They are the same as you and I with pain, if you have had broken limbs you would understand but with these guys the outcome is not a plaster but death. We can ease the pain and end life humanely.
We are starting to see the “pinkies” come into care. These are furless babies of both possum and kangaroo and need specialised care as very time consuming the same as premature humans. Had a call about a pinkie from folk in Acheron Dr and pleased to say the little one is thriving even though she started out at 97gr. We usually, because of the time involved, have a cut off weight of 100gr but when close enough we give it a try. The reason for this is we find further down the track they are apt to die as their organs are not fully developed and we have found for wallabies 100gr is more successful. The larger kangaroos have a different start weight of course. I have recently had locals contact me regarding the loss of native animals on OUR roads out here. We are trying to get the Council to do something to deter the “speedsters” as alas this is rife and has been for a long time in our community. You can hear the cars winding up and they are in 50,60, and 70k areas, this is day and night, starts about 4am and finishes around 11pm. The majority of our animals are found by walkers in the early morning that have been hit and left. It is hard when the young joey is trying to return to dead Mum’s pouch and the ants and birds have got to it or someone runs over both animals. Rollingstone Rag, October 2020

Ladies & Gentlemen. I’ll give you two guesses as to what I propose to talk about this month? Yes I’m going to talk about driving on the Bruce Highway (particularly between Mutarnee and Townsville) but it applies to any Highway or Road that you travel on. As your are aware, recently we have had two Fatal Traffic Incidents and one Serious Injury Traffic Incidents within the above area and from my observations, on my trips between Rollingstone and Townsville, I am amazed that there haven’t been more serious or fatal incident on this section of road. In a round trip to Townsville if I didn’t detect at least thirty (30) Life Endangering Offence being committed by fellow motorists, I would have to be asleep. I have seen some bloody idiot using this stretch of road and unfortunately, I have to admit, that many of them are vehicles that I see in the Balgal Beach Area. For the sake of repeating myself, each and every driver has an obligation to comply with the Road Rules, etc., at all times. I hear people saying, “I had to put my foot down a bit, because I would be late for an appointment”. Believe me, it’s 100% better to arrive late than not to arrive at all or be delayed because you caused a Traffic Incident on the Highway. To start this article off, let me start with my favorite Road Rules that required EVERY driver of a vehicle on a Road to “Drive with Due Care and Attention”. Quite often I have been following a vehicle and it is quite obvious that they are committing this offence, as whilst they are driving, they are looking towards the passenger talking and not watching what is going on in the environment in which they are driving. What if a horse, cow, kangaroo or any other animal runs out in front of your vehicle or something drops off the vehicle in front of you whilst your head is looking to the left. I’ll tell you what you’ll do. You’ll panic, slam on the brakes and turn your steering wheel to avoid hitting the animal or object. BAD MOVE. If you swing to the right, you could collide with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. If you swing to the left, there is about an 80% chance that your front wheels will lock up and swing the rear of your vehicle towards oncoming vehicle/s. Quite often, these action could result in your vehicle rolling, as you would not have any control of it. This offence is not only applicable to looking at the passenger, as the list is too long to include in this article, but it is anything that you do that is not applicable to driving your vehicle (i.e. taking a drink from a container, changing the Station on your radio or changing devices that contain music etc., that you wish to listen to, picking up something that fell on the floor, putting on make up). The Road Rules require a driver to drive with Due Care and Attention to your driving and Rollingstone Rag, October 2020
nothing else. At all times whilst you are driving you should be paying attention to the environment in which you are driving. You never know if a pot hole has appeared in the road since you last used it. You should be travelling at a safe distance from the rear of the vehicle in front, so if the driver of that vehicle makes an emergency braking, you can safely stop before colliding with it.
The Road Rules set the MAXIMUM speed limit that you can drive on a road. When the Speed Sign shows 100 Speed Limit, that is the maximum speed at which you can lawfully travel, not 1 or 2 or 5km over. The speed on the Speed Limit Sign MUST be obeyed.
This situation is compounded by the fact that over 90% of motorists either don’t know the Road Rules that require a motorist to “Drive as Near as Practicable to the Left Side of the roadway.” Not adjacent to the centre line or in the middle of the lane. IT CLEARY requires motorists to “Keep as Far Left as Possible”. If you don’t obey this Rule, a motorist following you has to drive completely on the incorrect side of the road when over taking you. I always drive with my nearside wheel adjacent to the edge line and where they have a rumble strip beside it, I very occasionally touch it so I know how close I am to the edge line. Often is the time that, when I am driving, I have grave concerns about where motorist drive their vehicles on the road. Finally, one of my favorite subjects, “SPEED”. Years ago, we (the Police) gave a leeway (maybe 8km/h over), but because motorist thought that that meant that they could do that, the incidents of Traffic Incidents increased so the tolerance was lowered. I can not confirm this, but I have been told that if a Police Officer detects you doing 2 km per hour over the speed limit, you can be issued with a Infringement Notice for exceeding the Speed Limit. I can hear people say that they have been driving for years and have never been involved in a Traffic Incident even though they drive little faster than the speed limit. Believe me, you are one of the lucky ones. I’m often ask this question, “How fast does a motor vehicle have to be travelling to kill someone” and I can’t believe some of the answers. Believe me it horrifies me that I share the roads with these “idiots”.
one over and they bump their head on the road surface and fracture their skulls. What about the children who have been accidentally killed by their parents or family and friends when reversing out of the driveway. Please, always remember that a vehicle, once put into motion is equally as dangerous as carrying a loaded firearm. The vehicle does not have to be doing over a certain speed to kill someone. Finally, on the subject of speed, I’d like to address “SPEED ZONES” and what drivers are required to do when they are approaching these signs. We all know what a “Speed Restriction Sign” looks like. They can be seen up to or even more than half a kilometer away, yet I see motorists regularly doing 100km/h or more until the pass the sign (very few apply brakes, they let vehicle slow down on the motor). Quite often motorist don’t slow down to the speed limit, but once they see the Official Speed Limit Sign lifting the Speed Limit to 100km/h in the distance, they accelerate and on most occasions they’re doing (or exceeding) the 100km/h speed limit when they pass the sign. Folks, if you are guilty of doing this, don’t condemn the police when they issue you with a ticket, as the Speed Zone is from the point where the sign is, all the way to the sign lifting the speed limit. That means not even 2 or 3 meters before you reach the sign. I can see that this will soon be strictly enforced, as ALL deaths on our roads are most times due to drivers not obeying the Road Rules pertaining to speed limits. To enforce this statement, I am sure that when you travel to town (or coming home), you have seen at Bluewater the large Red Markings on the road (which are quite visible from a distance back as well as the 80km/h Speed Limit Sign (which I recently found on the approaches of all small towns, etc. and major centres between Townsville and Bowen), that police will be directed to enforce the speed limits in these zones. If you choose to ignore this warning, do it at your own peril and don’t blame the police, as they weren’t driving your vehicle and they are charged with making our Roads safe to all road users, so please be warned. I know from practical experience, that one of the worst jobs the Police have to do is attend Fatal Traffic Accidents (and when children are killed or seriously injured it has a dramatic affect on them, as they may have children of their own about the same age). You never forget them and when you see idiots breaking the law (particularly speeding), these images come flooding back.
People laugh when I mention that many people have been killed by a car doing 5 to 10km per hour. Remember, pedestrians also use the carriage way to cross or walk along when there is no footpath. It doesn’t take much to knock 21

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hi Community We have had a fantastic end to Term 3 with the school spending Friday morning picking up rubbish and keeping our beach clean. After a delicious sausage sizzle from our wonderful P&C, everyone enjoyed the beach activities playing cricket, getting wet and building in the sand. A big thank you to Sunbus and Mr Jackson for providing transport, our P&C for lunch and Pace Farming for providing some delicious watermelons and pineapples. Some of our students will continue their learning about money next term. Unfortunately, many of us now use cards and phones to pay for goods and many of the students haven’t had many opportunities to use notes and coins.
Rollingstone Rag, October 2020
As there is an election on the 31st of October, we thought this would be a great opportunity for some of our students to run a small shop to practice giving change. In conjunction with our P&C, they will be selling cakes, drinks and plants with all proceeds raised going to our P&C. So please bring down some notes and coins when you go to vote to support our students learning and their little shop. I’ll leave you with some great work from a few of our young students who have been creating informative texts.

Are you bushfire prepared? The bushfire season in Queensland runs from late July to February, and will vary within the state. The Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is an early indicator of potential danger and should act as your first trigger for action. When there’s a bushfire in your area, it’s up to you to take notice, seek information, make decisions and act.

After a While, by Veronica A. Shoffstall
PINEAPPLE SMOOTHIE For a true taste of summer, why not try this delicious, refreshing drink INGREDIENTS 1 litre can pineapple juice 2 tablespoons mint leaves 3-4 drops bitters 2-3 cups ice cubes METHOD: Pour pineapple juice into a blender. Add mint leaves, bitters and ice cubes. Blend until ice is finely crushed and mixture is soft. Pour into serving glasses and serve immediately. Rollingstone Rag, October 2020
After a while, you learn the subtle difference Between holding a hand and chaining a soul, And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning And company doesn’t mean security, And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts And presents aren’t promises, And you begin to accept your defects With your head up and your eyes open, With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child, And learn to build all your roads on today, Because futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight. And after a while, you learn That even sunshine burns if you get too much. So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure… That you really are strong And you really do have worth And you learn and learn… With every goodbye, you learn.
