When we enter our senior years, we face the challenge of doing enough physical activity to keep fit while avoiding injury from falls and joint issues. Aquarobics or water aerobics, along with other water-based exercises, can be the perfect answer to this dilemma.

Aquarobics is an effective way to keep active, especially if you have chronic health conditions such as arthritis, joint problems, and circulation issues.1 Here, we look at some of the benefits aquarobics can provide for seniors who want to stay active.

Builds muscle mass and strength

Works out the heart muscles

For seniors recovering from a fall or on rehabilitation from operations such as hip replacements, aquarobics can be a suitable form of exercise. The water provides a degree of buoyant support that enables you to stay active and exercise your joints and muscles without the heavy impact and strain of land-based physical activity.3 With the guidance of your doctor, you may find that aquarobics and water-based activities such as walking, arm reaches, leg raises, and swimming to be relatively painless and restorative.

Although it’s low impact in nature, aquarobics – which involves traditional aerobics modified for level water – is suitable for taking heart rate up.2 As we advance in years, it’s more important than ever to work out our heart muscles and improve circulation. Water-based exercises offers resistance training through the hydrostatic pressure of water across the whole-body surface, which offers additional benefits for balance, coordination, and mobility. This light aerobic capacity of aquarobics can reduce the risk of heart disease, 2 an important consideration for seniors.

Enhances balance and coordination

By offering a safer exercise option for seniors, aquarobics makes it easier to build muscle mass or to slow down the decline of muscle mass associated with aging.6 Lifting weights in the water, for example, is a direct way to build extra strength, with weight lifting in the water demonstrated to improve strength in key areas such as the quadriceps and the hamstrings by 27% and 40%, respectively.6 If you are looking to build muscle mass and strength, you might be able to reap similar benefits by using weights during your aquarobic routine, but always check with your instructor and/or your doctor before if you have any doubts.

Recovery from injury

Chronic conditions Arthritis and other chronic joint and muscle conditions are common amongst seniors, and aquarobics offers a way for those who have these conditions to stay active and healthy. The supportive nature of the water reduces impact on the joints and supports full range of movement to improve flexibility, strength, endurance, and general fitness.3 Exercising in heated pools can offer the additional benefit of pain reduction, especially for those with chronic joint or tissue conditions.8

A natural effect of advancing years is reduced coordination, and aquarobics – along with the water’s supportive functions for the human body – can counteract this.2 Seniors who are experiencing poor coordination can continue working on building balance and expanding their strength and physical control in safer, more supportive conditions.

The ROLLINGSTONE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION hosts the TOWNSVILLE & DISTRICT (and Beyond) CAMP OVEN COOKING GROUP WORKSHOP. Well, we’ve had our meeting and discussion with the Gurus of the Townsville Camp Oven Cooking Group, and it was most positive. They’re booked in for Saturday, July 30th, 8.30am for 9am start until 4pm at the Rollingstone Community Centre. We realise that’s a fair way off but we wanted to give you all a “heads-up” regarding our intentions.

Bruce and Pat are really nice and good people and we’d like to make the day a success for all involved. This day will cost $30 per head, with our Community Association subsidising half of that, so it will only cost you $15. There will be a maximum of 20 for the Workshop and we would ask that you register and pay beforehand at the Rollingstone RTC at the Community Centre. If you decide later that you no longer wish or are able to attend, we will happily refund your $15.

You may bring your own Camp Oven if you wish; and you may also bring your own ingredients if you have a special dish with which you’d like some advice/guidance/instruction.

Otherwise, everything else will be supplied.

The day’s cooking lessons will start with Damper and Scones

which will then be eaten for Smoko; followed by a main meal like Corned Beef (for lunch); and after lunch, a Dessert which you can take home for your evening meal with the family! We will have Water and Softdrinks available for those wishing to purchase them, and Billy Tea and Coffee (gratis) as well.

Hopefully, all the while you’ll be watching Bruce, Pat, Mary, and Matthew, asking questions, listening and learning, and being involved (cooking) as well. Welcoming the 2022 Charity Bull Riders It’s nearly that time of year, soon I will be getting ready to once again pull on the spurs and join a mix of locals and a radio celebrity to raise funds for charity at the annual Ingham Sugar City Rodeo. The Ingham Sugar City Rodeo will be held on Saturday 14th of May, with the official opening ceremony commencing at 6pm. For the past three years, I have challenged novice riders in a Charity Bull Ride in the name of raising important funds for a variety of causes. Although I am reluctant to once again ride a bucking bull, there is unfinished business, and I intend to get back in the saddle each year until I hit that magic eightsecond ride.

I will be following tradition and donating my share of the funds raised to Audrey’s Angels of Hope, once again riding in memory of Judy Reardon. Audrey’s Angels of Hope is a charity that provides cancer sufferers and their families crucial financial, emotional, and social support. It’s a valued charity that relies on donations to support the Ingham community and surrounding districts.

Last year, we smashed our target and raised over $5000 in total, thanks to the community’s support and generosity. When it comes to supporting local charities, the people of Hinchinbrook have always dug deep to support those in need and I’m sure the entertainment value and the prospect of seeing local identities being menaced by a bull have inspired them in the past to give a little more. This year, we have all walks of life taking on the bulls, there’s Power100’s breakfast radio presenter Archie Arenson, Komatsu’s 3rd-year apprentice Alana Romano and machine operator Jonty Collins-Furber. My competitors and I will be encouraging Hinchinbrook to cheer us on and watch the Charity Bull Ride on Saturday 14th May.

Alex Shepherd has been very sick and was laid up in hospital for a week in April and is now home recuperating.

"Beverley Ferguson passed away on the 26th March at Townsville University Hospital. Bev was a part of this community for 16 years and was a beloved employee of Paradise Pines. She will be dearly missed."

Our Chrissie’s not with us at the moment, so we’re trying to keep things running smoothly and quietly until her return. Last month was mainly dealing with administrative stuff to get as much as possible put to bed before her leave started. Now, we’re hoping to keep things on an even keel and as less stressful as possible. However, the doors of the RTC are open Monday through Friday as usual and activities in the Big Hall just keep on happening. However, you might have to find yourselves a JP for the time being.

Functions during April happened as per calendar, but Australia Day Awards Night was a bitter disappointment, although all the others were well attended and enjoyed.

Don’t forget the Cancer Morning Tea and Op Shop Fashion Parade on Friday, May 6th. Please come along – after all, it’s all about raising money for cancer research.

Otherwise, it’s business as usual at the Community Centre, and all other local Groups are back “doin’ it”, so there’s plenty of entertainment around. All our services are in place and as far as I can tell, they’re working well.

We’re still waiting on parts to finish the Washer/Dryer job; and we’re putting in another Security Camera and extra lighting down the back in the area bounded by the SES, our Equipment Shed, the Lions Den, and the SES Headquarters.

We’ve got a feral pig problem for the first time ever and they’re creating havoc all over Pace Park and the Community Centre areas. Desperately hoping Council can get rid of them. They’re just sooooo destructive.

Yes, well, I really can’t think of too much else to report, so this’ll be a short report and I’ll try to do better next month.

What happened to our wet season???? It has been lovely getting the odd drop over night but it does not add up to a wet.

I had the most wonderful few days away at a great hide away. I went up to the Hidden valley cabins and had the most relaxing time ever. I just read, ate, slept, read, played on tablet, read, ate and slept. It is the most relaxing place I have ever been too and certainly recharged my batteries. I enjoyed the bird sounds which seemed to go on all day long with me trying unsuccessfully to put song to breed. They also have up there some neat macropods which roam the landscape and I was fortunate to see some along with platypus in their natural habitat. I never missed the speeding vehicles which race down most of the roads in Balgal/Mystic.

It was quite a shock to return to our touch of paradise and to hear and see the bleedin cretins that use this area as their own personal race track. It does not matter what make or model the vehicle is, they only have one speed and it sure as hell is not the legal road ruling. I had to stay in Townsville for a few days and noticed that the road rules seemed to be obeyed more in there than out here. Sirens were a constant sound which is vey rare out here and then usually ambulance. I am at a loss as to why we have to put up with this on going, long time problem.

This time of year we have animals on the move so really need people to be careful and if they hit an animal please contact one of the wildlife carers as both Christine and I care for the wallabies and kangaroos. If one is away you should always be able to contact the other. We have had several animals hit lately and they are being left on the road which causes problems with cars avoiding them and if there is a baby in pouch they are in danger of being hit and killed unnecessarily. We do have some wonderful caring people out here who will move them off the road and then contact us, we sincerely thank those people and to those who contact us so we can go check and for those who drop animals off to us. We also would like to thank those kind people who give us donations, if we cannot use something we send it in to those who can, nothing is wasted, so once again thank-you one and all. Rollingstone Community Aqua Group Our summer season has come to an end! It has been a great season with new happy splashers joining us and enhancing our group.

The past season has given us all the opportunities to condition and strengthen our bodies with flexibility and core work exercises, balance and posture and general fitness improvements and great social interaction! A luncheon at the Mystic Sands Resort to celebrate our season, was enjoyed by a large group, thank you to Mick and the staff for a very enjoyable meal.

The use of the beach entry pool at the Rollingstone Tasman Park Resort for our twice weekly splash, fun, fitness get togethers is of massive assistance to those in the community who would otherwise find entering/exiting a pool with steps and ladders extremely difficult. Huge thanks to Jodie and her team at the park for allowing us to use this great facility and the continuing work they do to keep the pool sparkling for all. We have also utilised the coffee cafe at the Resort, having some serious discussions and laughing, happy banter. Thank you all!

Enjoy the winter break, keep active, stay healthy and safe. Thank you to all in the group who have supported, assisted and contributed to a very happy season of……….

Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure G.Day All, Our early EASTER CELEBRATION at our BBQ night was a great night out. We had a really good treasure hunt for Easter gifts; everybody joined in with lots of laughter while they hunted all around the Hall and grounds searching every nook and cranny. Success! They were all found. They were CARROTS DONE UP NICELY AND FULL OF CHOCKIES. YUMMY as we all know….the Easter Bunny loves his carrots and choccies. Oue very own artistic Bernice Ivett made all the carrots. As always the cooks and the ladies did an excellent job with the fish and desserts.

We played TRIVIA with Sue Von Walds team and Kim Lawson’s team tied for first. They got an Easter egg each for being so smart. ANOTHER YUM. Gordon won the Raffle prize which was a LOUNDS’ FRESH SEAFOOD VOUCHER. Lots of YUMS tonight. GOOD ON YA GORDIE, Lots of prawns and seafood at Sue and Gordons place for Easter. LOUNDS’ HAVE THE BEST SEAFOOD IN TOWN. The LUCKY MEMBERS DRAW was won by Diann Seaton and she received a LOUNDS’ FRESH SEAFOOD VOUCHER as well. Another great prize.

Our next outing will be celebrating MOTHERS DAY on the 8th May. We will be going to the BUSHLAND BEACH PUB for lunch instead of our normal BBQ at the Hall. We are booked in for 11.30am in the Restaurant. We will be ordering from the Seniors menu or you can opt for the Mothers Day Luncheon. It will be a great day so come along and enjoy.

Rollingstone & District Lions Club Inc.

Welcome to another month of community development, we are busy mapping a refreshed Pineapple Festival for September after a two-year absence because of COVID, I’m sure we are all relieved to feel a sense of normality. Normality is perhaps not the right word; it indicated a stillness or routine process that is far from our planned revised Festival. Our committee is small, we would appreciate new people to help share the tasks, just to take on a small portion of the planning. We meet at 2.00pm on the last Wednesday of the month at the lion’s Den, feel free to join in if you could spare a couple of hours to help.

Another opportunity to join in strenghting our community is to register for our Youth Mental Health First Aiders Course to be held over the weekend – 4/5th June. This is the second Mental Health First Aiders course partly sponered by a grant from the Townsville City Council, and while this one will concentrate on Youth Mental Health; it covers material that can assist understanding mental health problems of all agers.

Our Lion’s Club is also appealing for new members. Our Incoming President at the end of June, Michelle is a young mother with an 8-month-old, and we would encourage a younger group to learn about the International, National and local Lions’ Clubs’ activities so us oldies can hand over to a new generation.

It’s incredible to reflect that our Lions’ Clubs have recently supported the Townsville flood recovery in 2019, the black summer bushfires with ongoing re- constructor of community level amenities, and the recent floods in Southeast Queensland and NSW. Our Lions’ Clubs also support foundations such as Medical Research, Childhood Cancer, Hearing Dogs for the profound deaf and Skin Cancer screening units as well has local concerns such as IT equipment for our Rollingstone school.

On 4th & 5th June, we have another chance to increase that number with the Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) course being presented. The YMHFA course is for adults who live, work or are concerned for the wellbeing of young people in our community and covers topics such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, suicide, self-harm and substance misuse.

Rollingstone RSL ANZAC Day 2022 was a success despite the weather, with quite a good attendance from the Rollingstone Community.

The Catafalque party for the Dawn Service, provided by 9th Transport Squadron, 3rd Combat Services Support Battalion, was led by CPL Alexander Beaton and the guest speaker was WO2 Taffy Nabbs. The welcome was done by Rollingstone RSL President Ewan Cameron and introduction by the MC John Muller OAM. Prayers of Remembrance was given by RSL Padre Bob Richardson.

The Catafalque Party for the 10am Service was provided by 9th Transport Squadron, 3 CSSB, Lavarack Barracks. WO2 Taffy Nabbs was also guest speaker for this service. Students from Rollingstone State School read a Poetry reading, as well as laying a wreath with other groups and individuals from our community, in remembrance of those who gave their lives for our Nation. The closing address was presented by Cr R Cook.

After both services a complimentary cooked breakfast was enjoyed by the Catafalque Party’s, Rollingstone RSL Members, and service attendees, at Mystic Sands Golf Club.

Coffee Caramel Cheesecake 100gr Butternut Snap Biscuits 150gr Digestive Biscuits 100gr Butter, melted 500gr Cream Cheese, at room temperature 300gr Sour Cream 380gr tin Caramel Top n Fill 2 Eggs 2 tsp. Instant Coffee 1 tbsp. Boiling Water 1/2 tsp Ground Ginger 1/2 tsp Ground Cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground cardamon 1/4 tsp Ground Cloves Rollingstone Rag, May 2022

Method: Preheat oven to 150c. Grease and line the base and sides of 20cm springform tin.

Process combined biscuits in a food processor until finely crushed. Add melted butter and process until well combined. Spoon into prepared cake tin. Use a straightsided glass and press mixture over the base and side.

Place in the fridge for 30mins to chill.

Process the cream cheese, sour cream and caramel in food processor until smooth. Add the eggs and process until smooth. Combine coffee and water together and add to cream cheese mixture with the ginger, cinnamon, cardamon and cloves. Process until smooth and pour mixture into base.

Place the pan on a baking tray and bake for 1 hour or until almost set. Turn oven off and cool cheesecake in the oven with the door ajar for 2 hours. Place in the fridge for 3 hours to chill. Cut into wedges and serve with fresh whipped cream.

Recently Rollingstone SES members undertook training in knots and roles as well as climbing ladders. Everyone who participated learned something new and had fun too. This training assists SES members to have the skills required to assist the local community when needed.

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club Hi fellow members, Welcome to our new member’s: The Love family, Joanne and Ken, Anton, Rebecca and Bruce.

Our Easter Raffle was won by Kim, second prize Condo and third was Chicka, hope you all enjoyed your chocolates. Meat was beautiful on the BBQ, steak is so tender, meat supplied by Sunvale meats, fish is always beautifully done. Thank you to everyone who brought salads, they were delicious. Thank you to Mal and Steve H for being the chief cooks on the night.

February fishing competition was won by Gavin. Come on everyone send those photos in and get this competition more competitive, everyone deserves bragging rights when fishing. Thank you to Graham and Barry helping out with training Steve and Bart with the stinger net.

Our fishing club would love to put it out there that families are very welcome to join, we are trying to make the club more family friendly, painting, colouring in and any other suggestions to entertain the little ones on a Friday BBQ night.

Regatta - family day June We will be attending the pineapple festival in September, with a few fishing games and will have memberships and information available, brings the kids and get them interested in a life time of fishing. 1st October will be the Kids Fishing Classic, we will be advertising with flyer’s so you don’t forget the date, kids will love it.

Market was back on but unfortunately the weather wasn’t kind, we need the rain but not on market day. So full steam ahead for next market day. The Market is held on the first Saturday of the month on the Esplanade, Balgal Beach. Locals and visitors have all enjoyed the recent spate of holidays with more people walking the beach, fishing and enjoying the special Toomulla Beach vibe. We should all stop for a moment and appreciate our little bit of paradise.

Winners are grinners so its not surprising to see the smiles on faces in the village at the moment. Kai Hanson was the winner of week 4 of the Lucky Number competition while Jim Smith scored twice when he won week 5 of the Lucky Number competition and also won the prize in the Easter Hamper Giveaway. Congratulations to you both.

There will be further winning opportunities in the Winter Raffle organised by the Community Association. First prize is a 4burner Jumbuck BBQ. Second prize is a $50 Voucher and third prize is a Wine Pack. Tickets will be available shortly at a cost of $1 each or 6 for $5. This will be drawn on Friday 15th July 2022.

A further reminder to residents that the 50 km per hour speed limit around the village applies to you as well as visitors.

Residents in Herald Street report that there are a few locals who seem to think that this speed limit doesn’t apply to them.

The speed limit is there to make our streets safer for everyone including the elderly, children and wildlife. Please slow down.

The next community event will be the Bee-Centric Community Learning Experience Day. This will be held on Sunday 22nd May in Toomulla Park from 11am to 2pm. There will be a Sausage Sizzle and the Townsville Bee Club will give a talk & display about bees and their importance in the community. The first 30 people will receive a free jar of honey. Bees are found on every continent except for Antarctica, in every habitat on the planet that contains insectpollinated flowering plants. Bee pollination is important both ecologically and commercially, and the decline in wild bees has increased the value of pollination by commercially managed hives of honey bees.

Comment has been made about the long grass along Herald Street outside of the area mown by Council. For many years, much of this was kept tidy by the Toomulla Beach Coast Care Group however the wet weather, and lack of available members due to hospitalisation and travel commitments, has meant that this has only been cleaned once this year. As winter approaches and grass growth slows, it is hoped to get on top of this again. Any help would be appreciated.

Rollingstone & District Leo Club Hello Rolly Rag Readers, and hope everyone has had a Happy, Healthy and safe Easter, a wonderful time of the year! And great that our Rollingstone Leos were finally able to provide some Easter Surprises at the Townsville University Hospital. Following COVID delays over the past 3 years, we were excited to be able to deliver Easter Eggs to the children, parents and staff in the Children’s Ward on Wednesday 13th April just in front of Easter. The smiles on the faces of the Children was reward enough for this great Service Project, and certainly provided some Easter delight for the recipients. A great morning was finished off with an impromptu lunch at Macca’s on the way home. Thank you to Leo Advisor Travis who organised the event and was the Coach Captain on the day.

Leos also supported and showed their respect for ANZAC Day commemorations, laying a Wreath at the main service and participating in the Street March.

On 21st May – Federal Election Day – Leos with the support of the School Junior Leos will be conducting a Car Wash. So please support our local Youth, and get your car or 4WD washed while you are attending the polling Booth. $10 per car, $15 for a medium sized 4WD, with price on negotiation for a larger vehicle! And yes – a few years back – we DID wash a 4WD AND Tandem Caravan!

April has been a busy month in the little village of Paluma with the school holidays and the Easter long weekend meaning we have had lots of visitors on the misty mountain. The local accommodation has been booked out over the holidays with many families spending time at Paluma to enjoy the cool climate, nature, the walking tracks and some R&R away from the city. The autumn weather has been superb with fine sunny days and cool nights.

Despite the weather bureau promising us great weather over the Easter break, the rain clouds descended on us early on Sunday morning (17 April), just in time for the Easter Paluma Community Market. The weather turned miserable with incessant drizzle and misty conditions. Nevertheless, the ‘show must go on’, so some very keen volunteers and stall holders set up the Sausage Sizzle and their goods for sale in the Community Hall.

Fortunately, the weather was no deterrent and the crowds came in droves to the Market. The Sausage Sizzle cooked by Don (the renowned ‘King of the BBQ’) did a roaring trade and was sold out by midday. The coffee and cake stall run by Jill and Colin also did well with queues for a hot cuppa, piece of cake or a hot-cross bun.

Patrons made the best of the rainy conditions enjoying their cuppa and brunch on the back deck of the Community Hall, overlooking the beautiful Village Green and the stunning backdrop of the misty rainforest.

Jan and Peter’s bookstall to raise funds for the Paluma Rural Fire Brigade (PRFB) was a great success. Ross and Sonya from the PRFB had the fire truck on display and offered some important information and handouts on fire safety in and around the home. The kids were treated with free RFB torches, stickers and colouring-in books, putting smiles on many little faces.

Many happy customers left the Paluma Market with a new hand-made garment, a plant, pottery, painting or piece of jewellery. Just about everyone left with a book, some of us with a box of books! Despite the miserable weather, the Paluma Easter Market was hailed a great success, raising important funds for the PDCA and the PRFB. Sunday afternoon (17 April) saw another important occasion take place at Paluma with the opening of the newly named and upgraded Colwyn’s Track. This rainforest walking track commences at the western end of the village, taking walkers to the end of Hussey Road and then on to Ethel Creek Falls. For many years the track has been closed due to fallen trees and obstacles along the track. Wilfred and his band of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain and upgrade our local walking tracks spent many long hours clearing and upgrading the track so that it is now accessible and safe for people to use. The track has been named ‘Colwyn’s Track’ to acknowledge long-time Paluma resident Colwyn Campbell, who is 80 years young, an avid track walker, nature lover and esteemed artist. With the rain still coming down in buckets, a sizable crowd of locals gathered at the entrance to Colwyn’s Track at 4 pm on Sunday afternoon. Raincoats, umbrellas and gumboots were the order of the day. After a short speech from Wilfred, Colwyn did the honours by unveiling the new track signage and cutting the ribbon to open the walking track. There were celebratory drinks afterwards (out of the rain), kindly hosted by the Klumpps.

The last week of April and yet another long weekend promises to be a busy time at Paluma. The PDCA AGM will be held on Saturday 23 April commencing at midday with a free BBQ lunch. The main proceedings will take place from 1 pm and the results of the meeting will be reported in the next issue of RR. The ‘Paluma After Dark Club’ will hold its second night walk on Saturday 23 April at 7 pm in the search for new and fascinating fluorescent flora, fungi and other nocturnal critters and creatures. We will hold our ANZAC Day Dawn Service at 6 am on Monday 25 April at the Community Hall with the raising of the flag and a minute’s silence to remember those who have fallen in service to our beloved country.

The Paluma History Display is open Tuesday’s from 11am to 1 pm, subject to the availability of volunteers to staff it. The first opening for this year took place on 19 April and while the attendance was down this was not surprising given the showery weather and the ongoing works on the Paluma Range Road at the time. Entry to the History Display is free and you can browse the historical photographs and albums whilst enjoying a hot cuppa and piece of cake.

Upcoming social events in early May include a Games Night at the Community Hall on 7 May with a range of indoor and outdoor activities including table tennis, darts and petanque. The competition amongst the locals will be fierce with several people grappling to hold onto their winning titles from the last Games Night in 2021. On 14 May, local artist Colwyn Campbell will host a ‘Watercolours and Wine Workshop’. Who knows, some new artistic talent may yet be discovered in the village.

A reminder that the Department of Transport and Main Roads ongoing geotechnical works on the Paluma Range Road will continue this month until end April, so please take care if you are driving up the mountain. Minor delays can be expected during the works.
