8am Catch Up - Australia Day Celebrations

Welcome back for 2021. This year has commenced with a flourish, we are already juggling so many jobs. There are some really exciting future plans and projects being considered just now. All I can say is watch this space. Congratulations to the winners of the Christmas Lights Competition, generously sponsored by Margie Ryder. Thank you to Santa and Mrs Claus for meeting us on the verandah of the Book Station. While the Christmas celebrations were so very different this year, the families in attendance enjoyed the festivities. All our activities have started up again after the Festive Season and most groups are experiencing good numbers. Please note that all activities are still governed by Covid-19 Community guidelines; remember to sign in every time you come to the Centre; use hand sanitiser, wash your hands regularly and continue to observe social distancing. We have been very lucky in this part of the state – let’s keep it that way. To all those who have moved from the district – we wish you all the happiness with the next chapter of your lives; you will be greatly missed. A CoRES Suicide Prevention course facilitated by Robyn Moore was held at the Hall on Saturday 27 February. The course is presented in a non-confrontational format and aims to empower the everyday person ask the hard questions when people are in crisis. The course is free to participants and is held monthly somewhere in the Townsville area if you would like to participate. We are in need of some volunteer positions to be filled. eg book station workers, bus cleaners, gardeners, hall cleaners. Please call or come and see us if you have an interest in these positions or if you need volunteer hours to fulfil you Centrelink obligations. A child safety Bluecard is a prerequisite “No Card No Start” and we will assist in applying for a card. Australia Day Catch up is being held on 27 March starting at 8am. Nomination forms are still being taken for the Community Awards and the Dunny Derby and are in this Rag. Please be mindful of scammers, they are out in force at the moment. I have been getting 4-6 calls a day on my mobile and I don’t even check the landline. The best way to avoid contact with scammers is to not to engage with them. Name all your contacts in your phone so you know your regular callers. If you do not know the number let it ring out, if it is important, a message to contact back will be left by the caller eg: a business or service or acquaintance. If you have the ability – type the unknown number into a search engine, often you can get information that they are scams etc. Blocking the number on your phone is a good way of stopping that number at least. The RTC can help you with learning this trick. If they are saying you owe them money and you know you don’t just hang up. Most importantly, if they ask for access to your computer - hang up; if they ask for your bank account details - hang up. They cannot phone scam you without you. In this Rolly Rag is a flyer inviting interested people in the district to register as a vulnerable resident. This is an activity by the local emergency services to support those in the community who could do with a little bit more help or reassurance when a severe weather event is threatening or has passed. We can sit down with you, using the Get Ready Guide, help you work out a personalised emergency plan. Please consider registering, the worse that can happen is you get to have chat with someone and perhaps some peace of mind knowing you have a plan in place. With so many properties being bought and sold in the community, we would like to welcome all new residents. We are a vibrant community with many activities and events held weekly, monthly and annually – all open to new participants. There is no reason to feel alone or isolated in your new community. Don’t know what to do with a cyclone on the coast? Call the RTC 47707855, we work closely with the SES and we can have an SES member visit you to help with advice etc. Alternatively visit the TCC Emergency Management Dashboard. Helpful advise and tips can be sourced on this website - http://disaster.townsville.qld.gov.au/ On that finishing note, please take care of yourselves………you are the only one who can. Cheers………..Chris Rollingstone Rag, March 2021

Medication Confusion You may have seen in the news that there are some medication/brand shortages due to COVID. We’ll do our best to help you stick with your regular favourite brands, but unfortunately some brand changes might occur. We understand that might get a little bit confusing, but did you know you can always come in and have a chat with your Pharmacist? Whether it’s about keeping track of brand changes, finding out more info about what your medication is for or talking about side effects – no question is too silly! If you feel like you’ve got more than just a couple of quick questions and want to REALLY have a big chat about your medicines – we can do that too. It’s called a MEDSCHECK and you can call to book in for one on most weekdays. Another change our clever patients have noticed is that scripts are looking a bit different now. Instead of a friendly ‘Lipitor’ or ‘Noten’ written on the script – you may now see that Doctor has written the big fancy name of the active ingredient instead. It’s a new Government requirement & will help lead to safer medicine use for everyone. So no need to worry if you see ‘Salbutamol’ instead of ‘Ventolin’ on your script, your Pharmacist will keep you on the same brand you know and love (when it’s available) and you’ll start to recognise the new names very quickly. There’s a lot to keep track of - but we’re always here to help, so please come in and have a chat. The Team at Balgal Beach Pharmacy

NEWS

Well, December was a very sad month for many locals who have lived here for some time. It saw the passing of Anne Zander, Robin Morice, Don Weight, and Col Jones. These folk had all been very much part of our lives and this community in happier times. As December is some time ago now, we have expressed our condolences to their families. Vale Anne, Robin, Don and Col. Also, unfortunately, numerous members of our community have not been too well at all over our summer. We wish them all better health asap and complete recovery. During February, we saw the passing of “Robbo” Robinson. Robbo and Gwen haven’t lived here all that long (about 3 years), but in that time, they’ve contributed much, volunteering in numerous ways. He’ll be sorely missed and we send our special thoughts to Gwen. Vale Robbo. Don Pearson, another long term resident passed away towards the end of February as well. Our special thoughts and well wishes go out to Cheryl and the Pearson families. Vale Don. Then to top up a not-so-pleasant time, we’re seeing a big changing of the guard as we lose Rob and Faye Thomson, Trevor and Carol Phillips, David and Linda Birse when they move away from our little township. All of these folk have been extremely hard workers locally and they’ll leave a big hole in our volunteer workforce. However, we send our very Best Wishes and Good Luck in their new lives. We’ve also learned that John and Piera Pace have moved into town – after a lifetime living and working in Rollingstone. They too will be greatly missed. Good people who gave much community-wise, with many talents that didn’t go unnoticed but which were used to make all our lives better. Thank you, John & Piera. xx (P.S: Piera is a REAL lady and a lovely one as well.) Not doing too well presently are John Pace, Geoff Ivett, Sharron Mills, Neil Thompson, Cameron Love, Gordon Payne, Bronwyn Sant, and Margie Butterworth. For better news, Rhonda Gurd/Earl celebrated her 60th Birthday in January, and it looked like a very happy occasion. Goodonya, Gurdie!! “Women in Sugar Herbert” has a new President: Caroline Pace. Caroline is the wife of Alan Pace (Roy and Barbara’s son) and they live on the Pace sugar cane farm up Bambaroo way. And, she is the daughter of Ken and Merle Dickenson who live locally on BBR. Congratulations, Caroline, and good luck with everything. Once-upon-a time, January used to be a holiday month as everyone recovered from the Christmas and New Year celebrations and then got ready for the kids’ return to school. It seems that isn’t the case anymore with Groups resuming activities immediately the new year clicked into place, with the result, all of us at the Community Centre didn’t get much of a break and January was busy, busy, busy, as we dealt with all that came our way, plus plans and a Calendar of Events for 2021 to implement.  After discussion, agreement and the “okay” from SES in Townsville, the RTC can now accept calls on the local SES Group’s behalf if they are needed. It is often difficult to get hold of them as they go about their daily activities; the 132 500 number is the “long way round”; but if you call Chris or Mark on 4770 7855, they can get the message into the pipeline quickly and efficiently.  Our resident RTC Hairdresser had surgery during January and is still recovering. We are sorry for this break in her services, but it can’t be helped. She WILL be back directly. She is such a good cutter; it’ll be a blessing to have her on deck once she is okay to go again. STOP PRESS: Just had word from Peta and she resumes her Wednesday haircutting on March 3rd  Larger communities with a larger ratepayer base, can afford more facilities, but a community such as Rollingstone cannot afford to have the same infrastructure due to financial restraints. Smaller townships have to live within their means, including Rollingstone/Balgal/Mystic.  Yes, well, we’re all back in harness and working hard to organise an interesting, enjoyable, and informative 2021. No more empire building for the foreseeable future – time for consolidation and some “navel-gazing” (internal reviewing) to see where we might improve our services and facilities.  There are a couple of flyers in this newsletter to which we would hope you’ll give due consideration and attention. Thanks, if you do.  Okay, so that’s it for March. Not very newsy, but we’ve had our heads in admin type work and STILL following up on projects we’ve yet to finish (sign!!)……….funding apps, meetings, pursuing dreams, etc.

Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza” Rollingstone Rag, March 2021

Would you like for your home to become Generator Compliant? If so, please call Chris or Mark on 4770 7855 to register. We’re endeavouring to get as many names together as possible to approach an Electrician to do a bulk job, the idea being to reduce costs.

The Community Association will shortly have available to the public a Washing Machine and a Dryer for a small charge. This will be accessible in cases of emergency, from Monday through Friday during the hours of 8am-3pm. You will need to supply your own washing powder, etc. We will cover the appliance, the power and the water!

The local SES is now accessible through the RTC (at the Community Centre) during work hours on 4770 7855, and after hours and weekends on 0407 753 562. Through an agreement with Townsville SES Headquarters, it has been arranged that we operate as a local Call Centre on their behalf. Otherwise, you can still call 132 500 or 000.

It’s that time of the year, and at the RTC we also have available a good number of booklets and brochures produced and distributed by the Queensland Emergency Services pertaining to the welfare of you and your family with reference to severe weather events. A particular booklet: “GET READY GUIDE” is extremely comprehensive and would be most beneficial for those new to North Queensland.

A consortium of local Groups will be canvassing the local areas in an endeavour to put together a Vulnerable Residents’ Register which will be accessible to the local Emergency Services (Police, SES, Firies) before, during and after a severe weather event in our district. There is a flyer in this “Rag” (March). Please don’t just throw it in the bin if you think it might help you or your neighbours. This flyer has received the blessing of the Emergency Services in Townsville, so no-one is over-stepping the mark; and it might be a further blessing to many households locally.

ROLLINGSTONE SENIORS Well we started off the new year with a bang at our AGM on the 17th February. Old Committee stepped down and new Committee stepped up. Nearly the same Committee with a few changes: President: Vice President: Treasurer: Secretary: Committee Members:

Wendy Clark Deb Calder Len Clark Kerrie Cochrane Linda Cleaver Bernice Ivett Joh Schweir

General information: thinking of during a trip somewhere for a couple of days maybe a week or two….TBA. How about another Flower show at the Hall?? Maybe September—October? Townsville Orchid Society are having is day outing in June. More info later. Also Ingham is gearing up again for their Annual Gardens Day out or they were before all the rain. Same again...more info later. We won’t be doing a Biggest Morning Tea this year, too many restrictions with Covid etc but in lieu of having a morning tea; the Seniors Committee have agreed to donate $1000 to the Townsville section of the Cancer Council to be spent in Townsville only. Joh has donated a keyboard and a mouse to me as my computer keyboard is not working very well, due to those little gremlins that love to get into your computer just when you need to use it. Sounds like the Rolly Rag Gremlins! They don’t mind invading anyone’s computer...or is it just me being at the helm?......Lol That’s all folks for now. Cheers….Kerrie

ROLLINGSTONE RSL ANZAC DAY Sunday 25 April 2021 Rollingstone RSL is pleased to announce that ANZAC Day commemorative services at the Balgal Beach Cenotaph will take place this year. The Dawn Service will commence at 5.40am and the morning service at 10am. However, due to COVID 19 restrictions we are unable to hold a street march and or serve breakfast. Those attending both services will be required to “sign in” using the Rollingstone RSL’s QR Code or sign a paper. RSL Queensland is aware that many people will not be able to attend services this year. Based on the tremendous community response to the “Light Up the Dawn” initiative last year, RSL Queensland will encourage Queenslanders to come together in 2021 in their driveways, on their balconies, or in their living rooms at 6am, to commemorate this iconic Australian tradition. If you have any questions regarding ANZAC Day please contact Rollingstone RSL Secretary Suzi Vincent: secretary@rollingstone.rslqld.net.au or 0409 880 902. Rollingstone Rag, March 2021

All hands approach to tackle crime In recent months, we have seen North Queensland’s crime crisis worsen under the State Labor Government’s watch. Whether it’s break-ins, stolen vehicle rampages, theft, vandalism, assault or other anti-social behaviour, I know Rollingstone residents and those across the region have had a gutful. Katter’s Australian Party isn’t just satisfied with just holding the State government to account, we want to go further than that and be part of the solution. If the government was to adopt our broader crime policy that includes mandatory minimum sentencing for repeat offenders, relocation sentencing and our recently announced our victims of crime compensation policy, we could start curbing the problem. These policies would go a long way in ensuring offenders are off the streets by giving magistrates harsher options when sentencing, as well as incentivising government to do better. Under our relocation sentencing policy, young offenders would be sentenced to do six to 12 months on an approved remote property west of Mt Isa. It won’t be a holiday camp. They will be out of town serving their time, learning discipline and life skills with the intention of breaking the crime cycle. Queenslanders don’t want juvenile or adult offenders out on bail wreaking havoc on our streets if they pose a danger to society, as recent events and tragedies have shown. We need laws that reflect community expectations and to become a deterrent to would-be and repeat offenders. Recently announced changes by the government to the Youth Justice Act are little more than window dressing. I ask once again the same question I’ve put to the State Government for three years - what will it take for them to put a stop to this crime crisis? Nick Dametto MP Member for Hinchinbrook

ROLLINGSTONE & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB INC. G’ Day Rollingstone; Well we have been under Pandemic restrictions for 12 months now, however we as a Community have kept ourselves Virus free. For the Lions however we have been very restricted in fund raising for the various organisations we support, this has placed an extra burden on them to carry out their individual roles, both at home and world wide. We, as a club have still been carrying out our support role within the Community and will continue to do so. Recently we have constructed a gravel walkway between the Hall verandah and the Lions verandah and out to the rear car park. This will enable people to keep their feet dry in the wet. Ten members from our club attended Lion Alan Robbinson’s (Robbo) funeral on Friday 19/02/21 R.I.P Robbo. Our thoughts go out to Gwen and family for their loss. Robbo was one of a kind and loved by all who knew him. On Monday we had our first Pineapple Festival meeting. I will endeavour to get information out to the Community on the outcome of the meeting and restrictions that may apply. Our club has started our election process for the changing of the guard years 2021—2022. For those who are interested; we are running a Health and Wellbeing program conducted on Wednesdays 5-6pm at the Lions Den, run by Natalie. Everyone welcome. The program is NOT JUST FOR LIONS but for all the COMMUNITY!! Lion Sue Thompson is running a Bricks and Blocks (Lego) program for the local children. More information on this can be read in this months Rolly Rag. A very good chance for the children to interact and stimulate their minds. I hope this is well supported. Lion Faye and Rob Thomson are moving from our Community after 21 years as residents. They are both going to be sadly missed. Faye was a tireless worker not only for our club but for the BBBaLC and the RSL to name a few. They are moving to the Balgal Beach wing of Carlyle Gardens. This seems to be the growing trend. We wish them all the best and we will keep in touch. Beautiful People.

Our Community Health & Wellbeing program is conducted on Wednesday afternoons 5-6pm at the Lions Den, run by Natalie.

Our Health and Wellness Program is a Community Program and not just for the Lions Club. We would love to see Ladies and Gentlemen of the Community come along and join us. FISHERMAN'S LANDING FISHING & SOCIAL CLUB WELCOME TO 2021. Mmm, we thought it would be better, oh well. COVID is still hanging around but there is still fish in the water, which is great for our boaties and anglers. We do hope you all had wonderful Christmas and New Year celebrations. Even with all the rain and soggy feet. At our November BBQ and Christmas Party, representatives from The Fisheries and Wildlife were in attendance. They were very informative, explaining the need for safety on and around the water, bag limits and having the right, in date, equipment for your vessel. They will be welcomed back later in the year to discuss changes, if any, to the local laws and again reiterate safety measures. For further information head to: https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/ Get the APP! This will give you guide to bag limits, fish identifier and loads more. The Stinger Net had a rough old time over the past couple of months. Uninet had to come out and fix it a few times. The net managed to get a couple of holes, nothing that the ole ‘puncture repair kit’ wouldn’t fix. Then with all the rain it got clogged up with debris from the ocean. Even a bobcat was used to dig it out. Its been a busy time for Dickie and the stinger net volunteers. Thank you for your hard work and keeping our swimmers safe. Dickies Fishing Report: Giday Folks. Well it has been a while since the last report about who and how caught the fish and when and where. Starting at the beginning; Taylors beach inlet and Cattle creek have produced excellent catches of Grunter, Barra, Mangrove Jack and crabs, enough too keep any fisherperson happy. This is all due to the great start to the wet season which generates good flows in the river systems to produce good bait schools. Olera, Crystal and Scrubby creek systems also producing good catches as well although you need to be careful of the logs and snags that have been brought down stream in these areas. Rollingstone Creek, as always, producing good catches of Grunter and Mangrove Jack with the odd Barra being landed as well. Excellent catches of mullet, prawns and herring in the local creeks but be careful of Crocs lurking around the mangroves. a four meter plus croc has been observed on many occasions operating between Hencamp Creek and Rollingstone Creek plus other animals of size also observed. The inner shoals are fishing well with catches of Nannygai of legal size being boated, also a number of Barra being landed just south of the stinger net from the beach using plastic lures of various types. Paluma shoals fishing well for Grunter, Nannygai and sweetlip with the odd Coral trout being boated as well. I haven’t had many reports from the islands but with the number of vessels putting out to sea from Rollingstone and other outlets we should be hearing about the catches around our beautiful islands shortly. Don't forget to keep a lookout for floating logs which can be just under the surface and hard to see. Hitting one of these at 20 kts will be very bad for your boat and motor. We have seen the reports of croc attacks recently so always be aware that these waters are their habitat as well. Thats all for this month safe boating and tight lines everyone and please put in a trip sheet for your own safety with either Townsville or Ingham coast guards or let someone know where you are proceeding to and when you will return. You can leave your out of date flares and epirbs at the landing for safe disposal. Regards…………..Dickie Markets Update: Next market is Saturday 6th March from 8am at The Esplanade, Balgal Beach. Come down, grab a bacon and egg roll, coffee and a bargain. The kids will be in for a treat this market with face painting and jumping castles. See you there. Keep up to date on our Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/balgalbeachmarket Monthly BBQs: Our Monthly BBQs are held on the last Friday of the month. Its not always a BBQ though. This year we will being having some themed nights, our first being an Italian Night on Feb 26th. Members and Kids are free, Non Members $15 per head. ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hello Community We hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. 2021 is the first year for a couple of years where we haven’t started the school year with torrential rain or flooding. The rain still manages to unload as the students step out the door for play though, thus causing all adults to go into overdrive as we try and harness the finely tuned turbines of 66 restless students to indoor and undercover play. We are a bustling small school this year, commencing the year with 66 students from Prep to Year 6. Nine new Prep students and their new teacher Miss Hawkes have joined the Rollingstone team this year. Mr Bruce has taken a year off, but you will find him volunteering at school at different times though the week with his weird and wonderful science experiments, jostling jokes and in the near future some whacky woodwork. The holidays were a busy period for the school. Contractors were in to strip two of the classrooms bare and are currently refurbishing. The classroom is starting to look smart and we should be in by the end of term. Thus, we had to rearrange the school with the library now being the P/1 classroom. We have replaced all old projectors in classrooms with 75’’ TV’s, and now have a fleet of 62 iPads across the school. Miss Ratcliffe has been busy in the gardens with some students and we recently had the mould busters in to help give the place a clean glow. So what is in store for our small school this year:  Core Academic Goals - Reading, Writing and Numeracy. Some things just don’t change! :)  Innovation – A mix of traditional and new learning. Using technology across all subjects to provide multiple ways of learning and multiple ways of demonstrating success  Big Values – Placing a real emphasis on wellbeing and developing social and emotional skills to cope with our demanding and ever-changing world. A revamp of our core values with our new values being: We are Courageous We are United We are Responsible 

Active – We are placing a real emphasis on sport. This term Years 4 to 6 are training in netball twice a week to compete in a netball carnival. As well as our normal PE lessons every Thursday with Mrs Jackson, Friday afternoons will be filled with basketball, cricket and 10 pin bowling activities for all students with outside coaches coming in to assist.

Thank you for all your continued support and we look forward to working with you to make 2021 a successful and fun year for all. Andrew Stallman

Are you bushfire prepared? The bushfire season in Queensland runs from late July to February, and will vary within the state. The Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is an early indicator of potential danger and should act as your first trigger for action. When there’s a bushfire in your area, it’s up to you to take notice, seek information, make decisions and act.
