No bus Christmas Jan week Thank you to all those who took on board the need to wait your turn in the Vet’s line even if you are only getting a script filled. Wasn’t last month’s Rolly Rag cover great? Barb had a vision on how she wanted it to look and Mark was able to bring that vision to life. What a team of volunteers and workers we have at the Centre. The Carboot sale was an excellent event, which brought in a number of people who would not seen the artists’ works if they had not come to the Carboot sale. Thank you to the 9 artists who presented their works for sale and or exhibition. Pssst!!! We are going to try to do another in June and we will then be holding the exhibition at that time yearly. Goughy’s “Open House” Saturday 16 November, saw a good number of the community arrive to congratulate Goughy on his soon to happen retirement. Thanks to Noel from Mutarnee for getting the sausages, bottled water and onions donated for the occasion. Thanks to Allison for contributing the bread and for Noel and Sue VW for manning the BBQ. From all indicators, the Gough Family enjoyed the day - as said on the day, “this is the Gough Family’s community and they look forward to many more wonderful years here”. Lions Activity Day 17 November – Community Expo and Diabetes Day Lap the Map activities held at Pace Park and at the Community Centre. Once again, those who were here had a great time. It was heart warming to see the football field being used for its proper purpose with an 8 team sudden death Touch Football competition being played. Once again those who did come and see what this community can offer enjoyed themselves with Linedancing, Art, Indoor Bowls, and Cards demonstrations to explore in the hall and golf putting, Touch Football, demonstrations on the field. The SES, Fire Brigade and along with Margie Ryder and Shannon from the Townsville City Council contributed to the day with stalls offering Emergency Management information adding colour and purpose to the day. Thank you to all that participated and to John H from the Lions for extending the invitation for all the groups up here to show the community what they do. Calling all Gen Zs, Gen Ys, Gen Xs – For those who attended this meeting, we thank you for your community mindedness and contributing your thoughts to the development of your community. You can say “we did this” when wonderful things happen for this community. For those who contributed by email and text we also thank you. Your contributions were read out on the day and Margie was given a copy to take with her. To those who wanted to be here but could not spare the time, we understand. To those who couldn’t be bothered – we also understand, your community is just how you want it and you don’t want it to change……… Thank Tommy for your woodworking skills. The picture frame will come up a treat. Thank you to all who collected the bottle tops for recycling. We managed to find a collection point in Townsville and sent in almost 10 bags of recyclable plastic tops. Did you know that Angie sat at the RTC table and sorted all the tops into their respective colours. Angie deserves a big pat on the back. Trish C and the Townsville Museum and Historical Society, have donated copies of local historical books to the Book Station. 1 copy of each will go into our locked glass cupboard; where there is a second copy, we will put it out for people to read and borrow. Thank you Trish and the Townsville Museum. Silly season starts again. Christmas Carols is on Sunday 1 December. Come and enjoy the children from Rollingstone and Mutarnee singing all their favourite Carols. Due to the Total Fire Ban we have had to cancel the Fireworks. Sorry about this but we need to be very conscious of the risk of creating a bushfire. Australia Day Celebrations are just around the corner and will be held on a Sunday this time. We are trying something different in 2020, by holding the inaugural Dunny Derby on Pace Park. To everyone who volunteers for the Community Centre, thank you for a wonderful year. Your contribution to your community is rewarding and most valuable to us. As this year draws to a close and we hang the boots up for a well earned rest, the Management Committee and Staff wish you all the Merriest of Christmases and a lovely wet start to the New Year – well maybe not as wet as last year perhaps – just spread it out over the whole year instead of all in two weeks. The RTC will be closing for the Christmas/ New Year period from close of business Friday 13 December and reopening 2 January. Keep yourself safe – have a lovely Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year for 2020. Merry Christmas………………………….Chris 7 December

Two very important people in our little world are presently on the Sick List. Ian Dow and Kerrie Cochrane are both not well at all and we miss their cheery faces very much. Kerrie’s husband, Tony, is also doing it very tough. We’re most fond of all our folk, so please get better as soon as you are able. Poor health is the absolute pits and no place for anyone to be. Having just had serious back surgery is Carl Ford and reports are that he is recovering slowly but surely. Not a lot to report this month which, in a way, is good going into the Christmas break. We need to have things tied up or at least in the process of being brought together to make it easy to resume working with when we return. Fortunately, we have quite a few projects in the pot (as it were) and they’re all progressing nicely. • You won’t believe this, but someone has damaged our very NEW footy goal posts. Hard to comprehend, really, but there it is in 2 places. For heaven’s sake, why would anyone do that? They’ve been actually hung from/crawled over. They’re for the benefit and enjoyment of the whole community. PLEASE stay off them!! • Things aren’t looking good either for our Railway Display. We were supposed to get a “pumper” donated by a heritage railway group in Townsville, but that doesn’t look now like it will ever happen. Jeez, I hope 2020 is a better bloody year than this one! • We badly want an upgraded CCTV Security System and a properly top-dressed oval and no-one seems to want to help us achieve these ends. We’re happy to do as much as we can from every angle, but it seems it’s all too hard for those who could put up their hand to offer some assistance. The authorities offer all this money and then when the application goes in, we’re told we aren’t eligible. Very frustrating, not to say time-wasting. • About 40 people dropped into the Centre on Saturday, Novr. 16th, to say “seeya ‘round Goughie and thanks for everything”. Noelie Hall fed everyone and our Chrissie and Michael Fitz ran themselves ragged. A very pleasant couple of hours – and thanks for being decent to a very decent bloke. • All the Christmas parties in the big Hall seem to be progressing nicely, as they should. Have fun, folks, enjoy and be kind to each other; and we’ll do what we can to make your function as good as is possible. • Well, we tried. We did what we thought was right. I’m talking about the meeting we convened for Margie Ryder to chair involving our local young parents and young adults. No-one turned up!! Guess we’ve learned from that – at least we know that part of our community has no complaints in the way for which they’re catered in all aspects of our lifestyle. That’s a relief to know and makes us feel good, and no doubt, Council feel the same. Well, I can’t think of anymore news in which you might be interested. We still have several “official-type” meetings to attend before the end of the year, along with hospital visits to endure and Christmas cheer to enjoy. I wish you all the compliments of the Season – and may you be blessed with all the good things in life. See y’all safely back in situ at the Australia Day celebrations! Rollingstone State School Hi Community Wow! The time is really flying and we are nearly at the end of the school year. I can’t believe my kids are talking about Santa Clause already. As this is the last Rolly Rag for this year, we would like to say a special thank you to our parents/carers and our surrounding community for their effort and support throughout the year. Your commitment to providing new opportunities for our students and helping them grow and learn is what makes Rollingstone State School such a wonderful school. Many of our Year 6 students have been here since Prep and have become very close over the years. Thank you for being such great role models this year and we wish them all the best as they start another chapter at their respective High Schools next year. We farewell our graduating students at our School Presentation night on Thursday 12th December. At present, we welcome eight new Prep students for next year. In the past couple of weeks, they have spent a few hours in the Prep class having loads of fun with our current students. On behalf of Rollingstone State School, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Glistening Beach As I strut along the wonderful beach, In the cool morning as the birds tweet and sing. I can hear: The waves crashing against the rocks, I love the swishhhh of the waves as they wash the sand away, The rustling of the trees in the nice cool breeze, The bark of the dog in the distance. I can see: The stranded jelly fish up amongst the vines on the sandy shore, The brown little scurrying crabs, The tourist camping on the other side of the mouth, The red sun baking star fish in the rock pools. I can feel: The sun scorching through my top on my back as it burns, The soft sand in-between my toes, The slimy seaweed under my feet, The cold whiff of the salty breeze. I love my happy place, At dawn when the sun sparkles across the water.

Talkfest won’t solve insurance woes Recently, the Federal Coalition government decided to hold another talkfest about problems with the insurance industry in Townsville, only to be told once again what the problem is by those suffering financially. I believe the answer lies in the government introducing a mechanism like an equalisation tariff, similar to what is done with the electricity industry, whereby people in capital cities pay a little more for the cost of their insurance that would help lower premiums in regional Australia. It’s basic risk sharing. For instance, a small additional contribution of $50 or $80 extra per year by people in metropolitan areas would help lower premiums in the regions, as would additional regulation that would force companies offering insurance in capital cities to offer the same product in the regions. And if new players in the insurance market want to step in with cheaper offerings, that’s fine, but they shouldn’t be allowed to cherry pick where they offer those products. It should be nationwide. The Coalition could legislate all of this tomorrow and with little to no resistance, pass it through the Senate given it would lower the cost of living for regional Australians. Yet they seem content on looking busy rather than standing up to the insurance companies and fixing the problem once and for all. North Queensland has been suffering from exorbitant insurance premiums since Cyclone Yasi. This year’s floods only exacerbated the problem. We have blatant market failure and the government has a responsibility to intervene now and lessen the financial pain being endured by hardworking people in rural and regional Australia. On another note, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please stay safe and enjoy the break. I’ll catch you in 2020! Nick Dametto MP Member for Hinchinbrook

Rollingstone & District Seniors Ho Ho Ho!!! It is that time of year again. The time to be jolly, eat too much, indulge in chocolate Santa’s and even drink too much but what the heck, it is a joyous time when we reflect on the past. 2000 years ago even. The Christmas carols are on again this year and should be truly enjoyable once more, come along and raise your voice in song. Bah humbug, yep now who said that? I wonder how many children of today could answer that?? I ramble on so…… The Seniors Xmas luncheon is to be held at the community Hall December 17. Names and $$$$ to be in by cut off day Monday 9 th December @ $20 per person for a 3 course meal. The AGM is set down for Wednesday February 5th 2020. All positions will be vacant so start thinking about where you want our community to go…...Now, now, I heard that!!! I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Rollingstone and District Seniors to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and all the very best for 2020. Also I would like to thank everyone for putting up with my rambles on this page all year. To each and all, go out and have a wow of a time, live life to the fullest, embrace each day as a new beginning and don’t let anything get you down. Take care…...ciao

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc. November has been a very busy month with numerous catering jobs and Activities. The Bluewater School Fete and our proceeds from the Fete will be donated back to the School. We conducted a Melbourne Cup Sweep at The Ville and those monies will be donated to Cerebal Palsey. We catered for Nth Qld Caravan Clubs Christmas dinner at the Mutarnee Community Centre. It was a great night and everyone enjoyed themselves. Proceeds from our last Bunnings Sausage Sizzle went to National Diabetes Day. We then had World Diabetes Day of Action / Lap the Map for Diabetes. This involved Kids and Adults from our Community walking Laps of Pace Park and the Kids running through an Obstacle course with water and powdered paint being fired at them. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are now more aware of Diabetes. We had a 3 day event catering for Rolly Rocks at our Big 4 Caravan Park. The place was packed. There were 6 caterers on site which did affect our sales. Everyone had a great time, the music was fantastic and the array of Classic Cars was absolutely brilliant. Next month is also very busy with catering for Carols by Candlelight, Bluewater State School Presentation night, conducting our Santa lolly / Christmas cakes run on (7th December starting at 10.30am) and Mr and Mrs Claus will be there of course. The final Bunnings Sausage Sizzle for the year and last but not least; our Lions Clubs Christmas party. The Club will be in recess until 11/01/2020 At this point; on behalf of our Members, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. If you are travelling away, please be careful and stay safe……..Dowie A big Congratulation to Lion John Holliday for his newly appointed position. P20
Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News
Hello and welcome to this the last article for 2019. How the year has flown which shows how busy your Club was this year. From 25 to 27 October, 35 Club Members journeyed to Lucinda for the Club Family Fun Weekend Away. They arrived in brand new or older caravans, old and older motor homes, car toppers, tents or swags on the grass. Some also stayed in the resort units but no matter what mode of accommodation, we all had an equally great weekend. Lots of laughs, heaps of good food and probably a bit more alcohol consumed than our doctors would recommend. Of course, with any Club function, there are helpers who need to be thanked for their contribution to make it a success. Of note was Dickie who cooked for the entire crew the whole weekend; this trip he even remembered to turn the BBQ plates on to heat up before piling the plates with steak etc. Nearly everyone who attended pitched in to help out so from Di and myself, we thank you all for making our weekend more pleasant. After a huge feast on Saturday night two different trivia sessions were held, one on the Melbourne Cup and one on American and European Fish which really had us scratching our collective heads. Congratulations Mick and Chris Maher, you both know your Melbourne Cup history and Ron and Khwan Williams who knew slightly more than the rest of us on foreign fish. Well done Moira Sweeney for providing the fish quiz. No Richard, the answer to “Why did the Melbourne Cup Committee decide to issue members with 2 ladies‘ tickets to the race in the early days of the cup?” is not “So they could take their wives and mistresses” During the weekend, some went fishing with mixed results, Garry and Koy Luff caught 13 mud crabs, 12 females and one undersize buck, better luck next outing Garry and Koy. Some went sight-seeing and some just relaxed around the resort pool. What luxury. Thank you all for attending. Now, where would you like to go on the next weekend away in late May 2020? We have some new members to heartily welcome to our Club. Mark and Michele Mullen from the Esplanade; Mark is the bloke working tirelessly converting a once bare sand hill into a beautifully landscaped garden and building fences at their new house. He is probably happy when his shift stand-down is over and he can return to work for a rest Not trying to put any pressure on you Mark but we are keeping tabs on your progress. One question though Mark, why the odd number of large pots, perhaps Michele could explain. Another new member is Matthew Sant who hails all the way from Cairns and loves fishing. It goes to show that people will come from near and far to join our Great Little Club. On behalf of the Committee and all Members, we wish you welcome and trust you enjoy your new Club. Market day on Saturday 2nd November was again quiet but our Big Breakfast Team sold out of food again, the campers and the occasional local must have been hungry. There were also a number of regular and new stall holders selling most things imaginable at a market but the majority said they had a slow day. Thanks again to Graham and his team of volunteers for their excellent work at the Big Breakfast The last Balgal Beach Markets for 2019 will be held on Saturday 7 December commencing at 8.00 am. These will be the last markets until April 2020 so don’t miss out. I am sure there will be bargains for Christmas presents and stocking fillers. Root through your wardrobe and dust off your old brightest shirt or blouse and come down to The Landing at 5.30 pm on Black Friday 13th December for social drinks and a few nibbles. It is planned to be a casual affair so just turn up and meet fellow Club Members. Please keep in mind that there is NO END OF MONTH CLUB BBQ IN DECEMBER. Instead, arrangements have been made for our Members to attend the New Year’s Eve Party at the Mystic Sands Golf Resort on 31 December. Once finalized, full details will be Emailed to each Club Member so please keep an eye out and, for goodness sake, open your bloody Emails!! So far, we know that there will be a courtesy bus, a meal, live music, dancing and romancing (if that is your thing) and fireworks. This has been a great night out in past years so lets celebrate the introduction of 2020 in fine style. We shall soon receive the first shipment of the new Club stubby coolers. The new cooler has a new design and will be somewhat cheaper than the previous coolers but a price cannot be advertised at this time until the Invoice is received and a true purchase price is known. The new design is lifted from a photograph snapped by Fishing Events Co-ordinator Dan Dale and your Committee is sure it will be popular with Club Members, visitors and overseas tourists. Recently there was a change to your Committee structure where Garry Luff moved from the General Committee to fill the vacant Treasurer position on the Executive Committee. Garry has been a Club and Committee Member for many years, his last position on the Executive Committee before work took him out of town was that of President; he has plenty of experience. Congratulations Garry. During the Christmas break I shall work (yes Cyril, I am wicked!) on the Club Social Calendar for the next 6 months. January will be free except for the Club End of Month BBQ in late January. Another event we are keen on if anyone is interested is a Buskers long weekend in Ravenswood. Yes, it is a bit far for some to travel but from the sketchy information received, it should be an entertaining time. You can even stay in a haunted room in the hotel or at the van park – your choice. More info later. With Christmas fast approaching Club President Di and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas filled with good cheer with family and friends and a happy, healthy new year. For those of you who plan to travel, please be careful, safe travels and come back to Paradise safe and well rested. As always, I ask you all to spare a thought and perhaps a prayer for our Defence Force Personnel P21 who cannot be with their loved ones this festive season due to their duties. P21 Until next year…….Ninger

Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G,Day All…..Another good night was had at our last BBQ; we played Quoits and as always lots of laughter and joking. Team 4 won and got good applause for their efforts. CONGRATULATIONS to them all. We hope you enjoyed your gold awards. Ken T had relatives visiting and his Daughter Nielie won the LOUNDS FRESH SEAFOOD raffle. TOP STUFF NIELIE. LOUNDSY HAS THE BEST SEAFOOD IN TOWN. The food served was fit for a king. Thanks to the BBQ cooks, TOP JOB. The ladies provided sweets fit for a Queen. Always such a good variety. I find them irresistible, very hard not to go back for more. And I do. Not much fishing being done due to the windy conditions and no rain. Drought on the land, drought in the sea. This is very true. Our CHRISTMAS PARTY is on Sunday 8th Dec. Come dressed in your favourite Christmas outfit. Prizes for best dressed male and female. Great music provided.. Come for a great night of fun. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. Sunday morning 17th Nov, our club had Breakfast at Bushland Beach Tavern. 25 members attended and all had a great time. Food was delicious. This was our second visit for breakfast and we thoroughly recommend them. Bushland Beach Markets were on as well. Worth the look. Keep safe and laugh often.. Visitors are always welcome so come along and meet lovely people and have a fun night. Meals cost $10 per head, children under 12 are free and Members are always free. All the best from your Commitee

"The Day Our Country Cried" Our country has been suffering – the drought is far and wide, No rain has fallen now for years across the countryside. On bare, red earth the cattle search for morsels to survive There’s not enough to feed them – many barely are alive! The harsh sun is relentless – there is nowhere to hide – and we feel their pain and anguish – the day our country cried. Two farmers were discussing about their neighbours’ plight. How some of them had bravely tried to carry on the fight! One bloke they knew had no more feed, he called the truck to come to take his stock for slaughter their suffering would be done. The driver looked them over and said – “I’m sorry, mate, They’re not fit enough to travel.” and left him to his fate. Having no way out – the farmer sadly went and got his gun. With heavy heart and head bowed low – he walked into the sun. His cattle were his pride and joy – been bred through many years but he had no way to help them and he trembled through his tears. Then, one by one he shot them – with anguish and with pain He headed for the farmhouse to load his gun again. He looked at his brave cattle dogs – and knew what must be done, they had been his mates for years but now the time had come. He raised his rifle once again – and shot his two best friends, how much can someone bear when does the suffering end? The farmer had not asked for help – he only had his pride. He felt he should be able to take things in his stride! He fell down on his knees and sobbed his gun was by his side. He’d kept one bullet for himself the day the farmer cried. So many people need our help, this cannot be denied. Lord God above don’t let it be the day our country died. Dedicated to our brave farmers who continue against impossible odds

Back from there night out and doing what Bats do best pollinate. Flying Foxes hang out together in trees and camp where courting, parenting, socialising goes on. establishing social life and of course sleeping. Like us, flying Foxes are very social animals and have a lot to say to each other. With more than 30 different calls they can say quite a bit and may be the next most vocal group of mammals after primates. At the moment it is breeding season for bats and this is when they are most vocal as they are also fighting for their place in the camp. Mothers will take babies with them when they go out for food but after 6weeks these babies become to heavy and are left in the tree that is primarily for babies. The mother returns to the camp after feeding, and pick out their babies by voice recognition and individual scent, each one is different. When bats are stressed and frightened, they make a lot more noise. Colonies tend to be noisiest when disturbed by people and least noisy when left alone. If you find an injured Bat PLEASE DO NOT HANDLE THE ANIMAL. Ring the Wildlife number and report it and they will organise an expert in Bats to come and rescue it. Well that’s it for 2019 my last story until next year. I hope you have enjoyed some of my stories as much as I have enjoyed writing them for you. On behalf of Myself, Gaye and Gwen, we would like to wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR and please stay safe over the Season. That’s all from me....See you in the great outdoors.
Hello to Rolly Rag Readers, Regular readers would have noticed last month there was no contribution by your local police to the paper. Certainly Warren Butterworth would have been thumbing through the paper at least three times looking for Goughy’s tales tall and true – but alas they are no more. It seemed fitting to give the month of November a wide birth so everyone could begin to understand the reality. Sgt Brad Gough, the author of many Rolly Rag “Coppers Logs” banjo playing, former police officer, friend to many and foe to very few has retired. He has decided to swap his super hero outfit of blue for a set of slippers and dressing gown and it looks great. I’ve seen a lot of police retire in my career. Some are happy, more are sad and don’t want to leave. However Goughy is the first officer with whom I worked a last shift. To see the big bloke having just a few hours to try and impart what he has spent a life time building, well, that was tough for both of us. To Brad, Allyson and Poppy, on behalf of the Queensland Police Service thank you all for your contributions to fabric of this community. It’s not just the police family who will miss you. It’s the school, the National Parks, the missing persons, the back packers running out of fuel, the Lions, the Farmers, the other emergency services, it’s Rollingstone. Thank you. For those of you I am yet to meet, my name is Tony Jacobs. I’ve been policing for over 35 years, Sergeant for over 20yrs and the majority of my career has been in smaller centres. Croydon, Georgetown, Mt Isa, Birdsville, Emu Park, Duaringa, Blackwater, Mornington Island, Aurukun, Palm Island, Townsville and Rockhampton just to name a few. I am remaining as your Officer in Charge until the end of January at this stage and it is my intention to apply for the vacancy when it is advertised. There is certain to be other applicants. Regardless of who fills Brad’s spot, they will be serving a great community. In coming weeks there will be a meeting of the Local Disaster Management Group (sub branch) to give me a chance to meet all the relevant stakeholders. With the weather events we have experienced this year it is very clear how valuable our volunteers are within this community and Brad has kindly agreed to steer me through this process, its appreciated. If there are new people to the area or those who find they have some time on their hands and would like to learn new skills, please contact me and I will be able to point you in the right direction. Finally, for any policing inquiries locally, please follow this advice. Emergency – Police, Fire or Ambulance – 000 every time. For non-life threatening emergencies of a policing nature – call police link on 131444 – give them the information and they will pass that along. To contact the Rollingstone Police directly – ring this mobile 0456096305. This is the police station mobile. Thanks TJ

Hello Rollingstone and District and with just one month to go until Christmas here is our last Leos Club update for 2019. Welcome to new member Montana, with several other friends also taking applications forms for parents to complete. Thank you Leo Co-ordinator Travis for the novel fun activities – great entertainment! Some of our Leos completed 12 laps of the event – a Fantastic and Colourful event staged by Leos for all the youth of our Community. Saturday 23rd November when Leos assisted Travis in pulling down the Obstacle Course and then attended the open forum for Families and Young people hosted by RADCA and Councillor Margie Ryder. Thank you Leos and Leo Co-ordinator Travis for your input into these discussions.
