As we wrap up another vibrant summer in Rohnert Park, it’s impossible not to reflect on the incredible energy, creativity, and heart that our young staff brought to every corner of the City.
From lifeguards keeping our pools safe, to camp leaders creating unforgettable memories, to facility attendants setting up for weddings, family reunions, and birthday parties, our part-time team of 14–23-yearolds helped make this summer one for the books.
These young professionals didn’t just show up … they led with pride, adapted quickly, and reminded us what it means to serve your community with a smile (even in 90-degree heat). Those of us who do this work fulltime have grand visions of what our programs will look like when they come off the page and become your experience. These committed young leaders make those visions a reality.
If you brought your child to camp, reserved a park for a special occasion, attended a City event, or swam at one of our pools, chances are you crossed paths with one of these young individuals. They were the smiling faces greeting you at the door, the calm presence watching over swimmers, or the behind-the-scenes team making sure the venue was clean and prepared for community or private events.
For many, this was their very first job, and they showed up each day eager to learn, grow, and make a difference. With guidance from our returning and full-time staff, and the support of our residents, they gained real-world experience in teamwork, communication, leadership, and public service.
This summer, we made a small but meaningful change: for the first time, we removed the word “Staff”
from our youth program leaders’ uniform shirts and replaced it with “Leader.” Why? Because this role isn’t just about clocking in and collecting a paycheck. It’s about showing up with purpose and making an impact.
We often say that Parks and Recreation services help bring a city to life, but it’s our people who bring those services to life. This summer, our part-time staff truly embodied that spirit. They didn’t just support our programs … they were the programs. They created safe spaces, memorable moments, and joyful experiences for thousands of Rohnert Park residents.
To the young people who joined us this summer: thank you. Your work mattered, your presence was felt, and your impact will last far beyond the warmer months.
To our community: thank you for trusting us, participating in our programs, and supporting the next generation of leaders, and we’re already looking forward to doing it all again next summer.
While summer may be our busiest season, our work doesn’t stop when the school year begins. We’re still here to support your personal enrichment goals through education, fitness, community events, facility rentals, and more. Many of the same youth who served you this summer will continue with us throughout the year, bringing the same energy, dedication, and positive experiences you’ve come to expect. And with a full lineup of shows and performances at the Performing Arts Center, there’s something for everyone to enjoy all year long.
