SPRINGFIELD – After his second-term inauguration amid a frenzied “lame duck” legislative session last week, Gov. JB Pritzker took the global stage this week at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
The governor and high-ranking members of his staff joined a bipartisan delegation of U.S. politicians and world business leaders with the goal of “promoting Illinois as a major player on the world stage,” Pritzker said in a call Thursday morning with media outlets back home.
In particular, Pritzker touted Illinois’ Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, or CEJA –which aims to make Illinois’ energy grid reliant on 100 percent renewable sources by 2050 – and the $45 billion capital infrastructure plan known as Rebuild Illinois.
“We’ve made it very clear when looking for nation-leading legislation, and leadership on fighting climate change and clean energy developments, that you don’t need to stop at the coastal states,” Pritzker added.
CEJA also set a goal of having one million electric vehicles on Illinois roads by 2030. The state is climbing steadily toward that goal, with the number of electric vehicles registered in the state increasing from 8,255 to 57,311 over the past five years.
A recent report from the union-tied Illinois Economic Policy Institute noted that an increase to 1 million EVs by 2030 could potentially cause a decrease in state and federal transportation revenues exceeding $1 billion over the next decade.
Since transportation infrastructure revenues are heavily reliant on motor fuel taxes, the revenue loss could reach $4.3
billion when factoring in increased fuel efficiency, the report noted.
When asked if he had a plan for making up the lost revenue, Pritzker said he didn’t find anything in the report “unusual” and the state continues to encourage EV adoption through tax credits.
“It’s not like Illinois is doing something that is deleterious to the future of infrastructure funding that isn’t already happening all across the nation,” he said, without identifying other potential revenue sources.
Pritzker said he has also been meeting with business and world leaders to discuss bringing more business to Illinois. In particular, he cited the field of hydrogen energy as a potential area of growth in Illinois.
On Tuesday, Pritzker visited the Wieland manufacturing facility in Vöhringen, Germany, an industry leader in manufacturing and converting copper and copper alloys.
Wieland currently has eight locations in Illinois, including in East Alton where the governor recently visited.
“I wanted to make sure they know that I’m at their service if there are things that I can do to enhance their operations,” Pritzker said. “They have many other divisions…and so bringing more of the rest of their company to Illinois is an opportunity I’d like to take advantage of.”
In a news release, Wieland CEO Erwin Mayer said the company is “contributing to the revitalization of manufacturing in the U.S.A. and serving the critical industries in the fields of semiconductors and electric vehicles.”
“We look forward to continuing the collaboration with Gov. Pritzker and his administration on further developing
these critical supply chains,” he said in the release.
On Wednesday night, Pritzker said, he had dinner with the U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and the Swiss ambassador to the U.S., discussing potential business relationships.
The governor has also been touting two laws he signed last week: a ban on the state’s assault weapons and a measure protecting abortion providers and out-ofstate patients, as well as gender-affirming care.
“In my state, people want to ban assault weapons. We just did that. Protect a woman’s right to choose. We just did that,” Pritzker said during a widely reported panel discussion Tuesday. “Those are not happening at the federal level and should, but we’re doing it at the state level.”
Pritzker mentioned those measures in the media call Thursday while referring to himself as the “state’s best chief marketing officer.”
“I’m making sure that people know about our leadership on safeguarding reproductive rights, on our focus on fiscal responsibility, our booming manufacturing sector and the fact that we are full of brilliant talent from our world-class universities and our nation-leading, third largest in the nation community college system.”
The governor also downplayed a Thursday morning POLITICO report that he was overheard talking at “high volume in the central lounge of the Congress Center” about his potential for a White House bid. He said the discussion that was overheard was with a reporter, to whom he was giving the same answer he frequently gives to local media outlets.
“I have every intention to serve out the four years that I just won as governor,” he said. “We have a lot of challenges in Illinois that we’re going to continue to work on overcoming and lots of success already.”
Pritzker was accompanied by first lady MK Pritzker, chief of staff Anne Caprara, and deputy governors Andy Manar and Christian Mitchell. He didn’t provide a cost breakdown, but said “much of it is covered by me personally.”
“And, of course there’s a security need, so that’s covered by the state of Illinois,” he said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden persuaded Democrats in Congress to provide hundreds of billions of dollars to fight climate change. Now comes another formidable task: enticing Americans to buy millions of electric cars, heat pumps, solar panels and more efficient appliances.
It’s a public relations challenge that could determine whether the country meets Biden’s ambitious goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030.
Relying on tax credits and rebates made the climate legislation — it was approved in August with only Democratic votes — more politically palatable than regulations that force wholesale changes in polluting industries.
But it also means the administration’s battle against global warming will be waged “one household at a time,” said Shannon Baker-Branstetter, who works on energy issues at the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank closely aligned with the White House.
“It is very incremental,” she said. “So it requires a very sophisticated communications strategy.”
Biden acknowledged the hurdle during a recent Cabinet meeting as he talked about the incentives that are becoming available this year.
“Folks need to know how to take advantage of these benefits that we passed. That’s on all of us around the table here to make sure we get that message out clearly,” he said.
The White House says it is piecing together a plan to partner with state governments, contractors, retailers and social media influencers to get the word out. “Lowering utility bills is going to be a key driver,” said Josh Peck, a senior policy adviser on clean energy issues.
It’s also collaborating with Rewiring America, a nonprofit focused on ways to electrify homes and businesses, and companies like Airbnb, Redfin and Lyft. As part of the effort, Rewiring America created an online calculator that shows what credits or rebates homeowners might be eligible for, depending on their ZIP code and income.
Buying a heat pump or installing solar panels is “a major expense line and a major opportunity for savings,” said Ari Matusiak, the group’s founder and CEO. “So it’s really important to make sure people are aware of the resources they have available and the benefits they can unlock in terms of bringing energy bill
savings.”
But the White House faces an uphill battle.
Polling shows that while Americans support action to slow climate change, they are broadly unaware of the Inflation Reduction Act, the massive legislation that includes financial incentives to lower emissions, and skeptical of their own role in the climate crisis.
An AP-NORC poll released in September, one month after the law was signed, found that 61% of U.S. adults said they knew little to nothing about the legislation. And despite the multibillion-dollar investment in climate solutions, only a third said it would help climate change; about half said it wouldn’t make a difference.
The White House says it’s not rattled by the results. The goal is to make sure consumers know the financial benefits of energy efficient products at the moment that they’re making key decisions on which products to buy, Peck said.
“One of the challenges here is trying to meet consumers where they are when they make decisions about these purchases,” he said.
Majorities of U.S. adults said they are unlikely to install solar panels or buy an electric vehicle in the next three years, according to the AP-NORC poll. Among those, at least half said financial incentives would not make a difference in their decision.
Homeowners typically are reluctant to swap out furnaces or water heaters until they absolutely have to shell out the money for them.
“One day the heat won’t turn on and it’s negative 10 (degrees) outside and you say, ‘Oh crap, I’ve got to get a furnace,’” said DR Richardson, co-founder of Elephant Energy, a Colorado company that helps homeowners install electric heat pumps and other appliances. “So the biggest challenge from our perspective, and from a climate perspective, is to get people to think ahead of time about how to replace these assets.”
Most homeowners don’t understand what equipment qualifies for a rebate or a tax credit — and even contractors are not always aware, Richardson said. While some heat pumps qualify for a full rebate, others do not or are only eligible for partial rebates.
“So it’s just a nightmare if you’re not used to working in building spreadsheets to analyze and understand all this stuff,” he said.
Not all of the incentives are ready either. While people can get a tax break on the cost of an electric car, solar panels
or heat pump, rebates for low- and middle-income Americans seeking to make their homes more energy efficient are not yet available. The Energy Department is still developing the system to distribute that money.
Cecilia Muñoz, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council in the Obama administration, said she learned in her tenure that it’s critical for government to invest in the delivery of policies.
“Too often we as advocates and policymakers applaud when policy gets enacted and then stop paying attention,” she said. Instead, they need to design ways to target people directly to help them “understand the steps that they can take and the ways that the government is going to make it easy.”
The Energy Department has begun releasing information to states about their allotment of $9 billion to support household energy upgrades, including weatherizing homes and installing heat pumps.
And Biden, a self-described “car guy,” has been doing his part to promote electric vehicles, making appearances at the Detroit car show in September and on the TV series “Jay Leno’s Garage.’’
Donnel Baird, founder and CEO of BlocPower, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based company that partners with utilities, government agencies and building owners to improve energy efficiency, has worked with Lowe’s and other retailers to promote green appliances.
The idea, Baird said, is that “the checkout person says, ‘You know, you can get a tax credit if you don’t get that gas lawn mower and get a green one instead.’” While such engagement may not have immediate results, Baird said he’s confident the tax credits and other benefits of the climate law will become better known.
“It took years for the ACA to get going,” he said, referring to the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. “I think the same thing could happen with this law.”
Dan Pfeiffer, a former top communications adviser to President Barack Obama, sees another lesson in the Affordable Care Act.
“The ACA got more popular the more that Republicans tried to repeal it,” he said, suggesting that Biden take advantage of any Republican efforts to roll back to the Inflation Reduction Act to draw more attention to the law’s benefits.
“I have no doubt the White House has thought of all of this,” Pfeifer said. But the problem is that none of it is easy.”
He added: “The bulk of the work starts now.”
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Shaking a traditional rattle, Brazil’s incoming head of Indigenous affairs recently walked through every corner of the agency’s headquarters — even its coffee room — as she invoked help from ancestors during a ritual cleansing.
The ritual carried extra meaning for Joenia Wapichana, Brazil’s first Indigenous woman to command the agency charged with protecting the Amazon rainforest and its people. Once she is sworn in next month under newly inaugurated President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Wapichana promises to clean house at an agency that critics say has allowed the Amazon’s resources to be exploited at the expense of the environment.
As Wapichana performed the ritual, Indigenous people and government officials enthusiastically chanted “Yoohoo! Funai is ours!’’ — a reference to the agency she will lead.
Environmentalists, Indigenous people and voters sympathetic to their causes were important to Lula’s narrow victory over former President Jair Bolsonaro. Now Lula is seeking to fulfill campaign pledges he made to them on a wide range of issues, from expanding Indigenous territories to halting a surge in illegal deforestation.
To carry out these goals, Lula is appointing well-known environmentalists and Indigenous people to key positions at Funai and other agencies that Bolsonaro had filled with allies of agribusiness and military officers.
In Lula’s previous two terms as president, he had a mixed record on environmental and Indigenous issues. And he is certain to face obstacles from pro-Bolsonaro state governors who still control swaths of the Amazon. But experts say Lula is taking the right first steps.
The federal officials Lula has already named to key posts “have the national and international prestige to reverse all the environmental destruction that we have suffered over these four years of the Bolsonaro government,” said George Porto Ferreira, an analyst at Ibama, Brazil’s environmental law-enforcement agency.
Bolsonaro’s supporters, meanwhile, fear that Lula’s promise of stronger environmental protections will hurt the economy by reducing the amount of land open for development, and punish people for activities that had previously been allowed. Some supporters with ties
to agribusiness have been accused of providing financial and logistical assistance to rioters who earlier this month stormed Brazil’s presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court.
When Bolsonaro was president, he defanged Funai and other agencies responsible for environmental oversight. This enabled deforestation to soar to its highest level since 2006, as developers and miners who took land from Indigenous people faced few consequences.
Between 2019 and 2022, the number of fines handed out for illegal activities in the Amazon declined by 38% compared with the previous four years, according an analysis of Brazilian government data by the Climate Observatory, a network of environmental nonprofit groups.
One of the strongest signs yet of Lula’s intentions to reverse these trends was his decision to return Marina Silva to lead the country’s environmental ministry. Silva formerly held the job between 2003 and 2008, a period when deforestation declined by 53%. A former rubber-tapper from Acre state, Silva resigned after clashing with government and agribusiness leaders over environmental policies she deemed to be too lenient.
Silva strikes a strong contrast with Bolsonaro’s first environment minister, Ricardo Salles, who had never set foot in the Amazon when he took office in 2019 and resigned two years later following allegations that he had facilitated the export of illegally felled timber.
Other measures Lula has taken in support of the Amazon and its people include:
— Signing a decree that would rejuvenate the most significant international effort to preserve the rainforest — the Amazon Fund. The fund, which Bolsonaro had gutted, has received more than $1.2 billion, mostly from Norway, to help pay for sustainable development of the Amazon.
— Revoking a Bolsonaro decree that allowed mining in Indigenous and environmental protection areas.
— Creating a Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, which will oversee everything from land boundaries to education. This ministry will be led by Sônia Guajajara, the country’s first Indigenous woman in such a high government post.
“It won’t be easy to overcome 504 years in only four years. But we are willing to use this moment to promote a take-back of Brazil’s spiritual force,” Guajajara said during her induction ceremony, which was delayed by the damage pro-Bolsonaro
rioters caused to the presidential palace.
The Amazon rainforest, which covers an area twice the size of India, acts as a buffer against climate change by absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide. But Bolsonaro viewed management of the Amazon as an internal affair, causing Brazil’s global reputation to take a hit. Lula is trying to undo that damage.
During the UN’s climate summit in Egypt in November, Lula pledged to end all deforestation by 2030 and announced his country’s intention to host the COP30 climate conference in 2025. Brazil had been scheduled to host the event in 2019, but Bolsonaro canceled it in 2018 right after he was elected.
While Lula has ambitious environmental goals, the fight to protect the Amazon faces complex hurdles. For example, getting cooperation from local officials won’t be easy.
Six out of nine Amazonian states are run by Bolsonaro allies. Those include Rondonia, where settlers of European descent control local power and have dismantled environmental legislation through the state assembly; and Acre, where a lack of economic opportunities is driving rubber-tappers who had long fought to preserve the rainforest to take up cattle grazing instead.
The Amazon has also been plagued for decades by illegal gold mining, which employs tens of thousands of people in Brazil and other countries, such as Peru and Venezuela. The illegal mining causes
mercury contamination of rivers that Indigenous peoples rely upon for fishing and drinking.
“Its main cause is the state’s absence,” says Gustavo Geiser, a forensics expert with the Federal Police who has worked in the Amazon for over 15 years.
One area where Lula has more control is in designating Indigenous territories, which are the best preserved regions in the Amazon.
Lula is under pressure to create 13 new Indigenous territories — a process that had stalled under Bolsonaro, who kept his promise not to grant “one more inch” of land to Indigenous peoples.
A major step will be to expand the size of Uneiuxi, part of one of the most remote and culturally diverse regions of the world that is home to 23 peoples. The process of expanding the boundaries of Uneiuxi started four decades ago, and the only remaining step is a presidential signature, which will increase its size by 37% to 551,000 hectares (2,100 square miles).
“Lula already indicated that he would not have any problem doing that,” said Kleber Karipuna, a close aide of Guajajara.

Broccoli is not always given it’s due. Yet the National Garden Bureau would like you to reconsider this humble vegetable as they have declared 2023 to be the year of the broccoli. If you are ambivalent to this vegetable, you may find newer types of broccoli available as transplants and seeds that have a dierent flavor, do not produce a traditional broccoli head, and may be more kid friendly in taste. While you may be growing traditional broccoli every year, there are some newer cultivars of broccoli available that might be great additions to your garden this season.
Newer broccoli types are Broccoli Rabe, Romanesco, and Broccolini. Most of
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENTthese are crosses between other broccoli family members. For example, broccolini is a cross between Chinese broccoli and the standard broccoli. It produces small fl orets, so not the traditional broccoli head you are expecting. Broccoli Romanesco has physical attributes similar to cauliflower. It may also be listed as Broccoflower. One of the benefits with growing Broccoli Romanesco is that if eaten raw, it tastes like cauliflower while if you cook it, it tends to taste like broccoli. Broccoli Rabe may also be called Rapini. It tends to have a flavor closer to turnip and may be more bitter than broccolini. Since many of these are not producing a traditional broccoli head, they tend to have shorter maturity dates. While
broccoli will produce in 74 days, broccoli rabe is 50 to 60 days and broccolini is 60 days. If you have struggled to grow traditional broccoli and have it produce a solid head, these other cultivars could be an option due their shorter maturity. Spacing can vary considerably too. While broccoli is planted 12-24 inches in row, broccoli rabe is spaced 8-12 inches with broccolini 8-10 inches.
Broccoli does well from transplants. You’ll find transplants available at home and garden centers fairly regularly. Most seasons broccoli should be planted the end of April. You could also start your broccoli seeds indoors.
You can also grow traditional broccoli for the leaves. Growing up in the south,
my grandparents grew broccoli specifically for the leaves. These leaves were then cooked down in a way similar to collard or mustard greens. This growing practice meant that the head was never developing fully.
There are very few broccoli cultivars. These include ‘Crusier’, ‘Green Goliath’, and ‘Green Comet’. You’ll find even less varieties for rabe, rapini, and broccolini too. Before growing these, I always encourage new growers to taste and cook with these. I’ve started to see more of these available at grocery stores in our area.

Large families were common in earlier times when immigrants from Europe arrived in the U.S. Some families had 10 or 11 children who were expected to work and give their earnings to their parents to help pay for household expenses. When they matured and married their expectations were far more modest in terms of how many children they wanted. Some chose not to have children and many had far fewer children. None of our friends came from families with more than three children with one or two being most
common. It was widely recognized that a large number of children was now an economic burden for a family.
In 1968 The Population Bomb was written by Paul Erlich and became a best seller. It raised awareness of the adverse environmental, economic and social impacts of the rapidly increasing global population following WW II. While his dire predictions of what the future held were not fulfi lled, it established population growth as an environmental issue. Critics pointed out that other factors were also involved in environmental deterioration.
The Population Bomb was seen as being
consistent with the theme established in the 1798 book by Thomas Malthus claiming that human population growth is exponential while natural resources growth is linear. If the human population were not regulated, it would eventually exceed available resources resulting in famine, disease and population collapse. His dire prediction was never realized.
Ehrlich’s book led to numerous debates based on criticisms of his population concerns but Republican President Nixon signed a law establishing a Commission on Population Growth and the American Future.
The Commission, chaired by John D. Rockefeller, released its report over 50 years ago. The report called for a gradual stabilization through voluntary means as it would contribute significantly to the nation’s ability to solve its problems.
Yet we are dealing with a border issue regarding disagreements regarding immigrants. The controversial issue of immigration remains and has become a global concern with many people trying to enter another country for a better life for themselves and their children. Wars and poverty in the Middle East and portions of Africa have sent immigrants seeking refuge in Europe. It is estimated that as much as 1/3 of the population of Ukraine has fled to European countries as well as to Russia to escape the devastation of war.
Immigrants continually try to cross the border from Mexico to the United States. Another global dimension of the population issue is the failure of many countries to have enough children to replace their aging national population. It involves a decision by people of child bearing years to voluntarily limit their reproduction. Considering the large number of people reaching retirement age, it places a financial burden on the small population still in the labor force to support retirees, many of whom are in declining health. The rate of reproduction in China continues to fall; it is expected that India will soon have the world’s largest population.
It is clear that much of the world is experiencing a population problem –more people than can be adequately employed or an inadequate number of available workers to support an aging population. Countries impacted by these trends are struggling to address the problems.
A large human population and their standard of living is built on the availability of a substantial amount of low cost energy and food supplies. If adequate amounts of low cost essential supplies decline so does the standard of living. In some countries hunger and famines are expected.
On July 24, 1915, Grace Stevens was more excited than she could remember. She was getting ready for her company picnic. Grace worked for the Chicago based Western Electric Company for the past three years and considered herself lucky to have secured such a position.
Grace was born in 1891 in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. Her family moved to the Rockton, Illinois area where her parents, Winfield and Belle rented a farm. Winfield passed away in 1907 when he was 48 and the family moved to Rockford to look for work. Grace’s brother Alvey seemed to have trouble finding a job. It must have seemed like the family’s fortunes had finally turned when Grace got the job with the Western Electric Company in 1912. The family moved to Chicago when Grace was offered the job.
Western Electric had quite a reputation for splurging on their employees for their annual party. This was a highlight of the year for most of these workers. It meant a special treat for the whole family for the married folks. As far as the non-married employees were concerned, it was an opportunity to meet other eligible men and women. The single women got together to shop for new dresses and hats. They also would help style each other’s hair and to dress.
The company hired five boats to carry their workers across Lake Michigan to Michigan City for the day. They warned folks to arrive early, and Grace took the warning to heart. She waited for her turn to walk up the gangplank and board the U.S.S. Eastland, the first boat scheduled to leave the dock from downtown Chicago. Even though it was just a little after 7:00 in the morning, the celebration had already begun. There was a band playing as the passengers walked onboard. People boarding were shouting and waving to folks already on the ship.
Over 7,000 tickets were sold for this day-long excursion and the crew of the Eastland made sure that every available space was filled. They were even federal inspectors along to make sure of the count for each ship. The 275-foot boat normally carried 2,500 passengers plus the crew but on this day the number reached higher.
Some of the families with younger children headed below decks so the little ones couldn’t wander off in the party-like atmosphere on the deck. Up top, folks were scrambling for seats and leaning on the rails to wave to the people left on the dock.
By 7:15 a.m., the ship was filled to capacity and though the passengers didn’t notice, it had begun to list away from the wharf. The ship listed only for
a short while this time but within a few more minutes, the first of a long list of small warning signs began.
By 7:23 a.m., the Eastland began to list once again. This time, water started to enter the engine room and some of the crew climbed up ladders to the main deck. Within a few more minutes, the list had shifted to 45 degrees. Furniture began to slide, causing injuries to some of the passengers. Water also poured into the portholes in the cabins below. Each of these incidents would lead to one of the worst shipwrecks in the history of the Great Lakes.
The next time the Eastland started to list, she didn’t stop. The boat rolled slowly onto its side, the people on deck were thrown into the water. Their clothes soon weighed them down making it impossible to tread water. Folks below deck were trapped in their rooms, as doors and passageways were blocked by shifting furniture. Whole families tried to make their way off the sinking ship as the water poured inside.
One eyewitness said that after the boat flipped there was a full minute of silence, like no one could believe what they had just seen. Then the screams began. By 7:30 that morning, the boat was completely on its side in 20 feet of water, still tied to the dock. It had rolled over so quickly, there was no time to use the life-saving equipment that was on the Eastland.
This was a busy Saturday morning and hundreds if not thousands of people were on the docks conducting business. They quickly began to pull folks from the water almost immediately. There was no lack of heroes on this day.
The water was a mass of people trying to stay afloat. There was a lot of chaos as the air filled with shouting and screaming. One eyewitness, Harlan Babcock, was a reporter for the Chicago Herald. He stated in his article about the tragedy, “In an instant, the surface of the river was black with struggling, crying, frightened, drowning humanity. Wee infants floated about like corks.”
One can only imagine the horror of the moment as parents tried to save their children and spouses, only to watch as they slipped under the water for the final time. Later, many of these family members would be found clasped in each other’s arms. The survivors would mention the sounds of people’s screams. Even years later, they would talk of hearing those screams in their nightmares.
Men with boats launched them to save as many survivors as they could reach. Others pulled the injured ones from the wreckage and commandeered cars and wagons to take them to local hospitals.
One of the many selfless helpers on
this July day was Helen Repa. Helen was on the way to the docks to catch one of the boats for the outing. She was a nurse who worked for Western Electric. She jumped aboard a passing ambulance and made her way quickly to the docks. She, too, mentioned the sounds of screaming. Helen rushed onto the hull of the overturned ship to help pull the survivors from the water and through the portholes of the ship. Some were badly injured. Helen arranged for blankets to be sent from the nearby Marshall Fields Store. She also called local restaurants and had them bring soup and hot coffee to the scene and to the hospitals for the staff.
In the end 844 people died in the disaster, including 22 whole families. The dead were carried to the Second Regiment Armory which had been turned into a makeshift morgue. The dead were lined up rows so their family members could walk down the aisle to find their loved ones. Unfortunately, some folks who came through were more interested in grabbing jewelry from the corpses than helping identify them.
One of the dead was Grace Stevens. Her mother and brother had to walk up and down the aisles of the dead until they could find her.
The investigation of the sinking of the Eastland started even before all the dead were removed from the area. There were many aspects to the investigation of this ship. This was only a few years after the sinking of the Titanic. One of the changes that had resulted from that tragedy was that every boat needed enough lifeboats to carry 75% of the people onboard. The Eastland carried 11 lifeboats, 37 life rafts and 2.570 life preservers to accommodate for their passengers. Since the boat had been made in 1902, before this new rule, all these items needed to fit somewhere. The crew eventually stored all these items on the deck causing it to become top heavy.
This would surely have contributed to the sinking that day, but the Eastland had its share of issues even before the new rules. In fact, some sailors claimed the ship was cursed from the start and called her a “hoo doo vessel”. Several good books have been written about the sinking and mention close calls through the years. One such near disaster took place in 1904, when she had 3,000 people onboard and another in 1906 with 2,530 passengers. One crew member described the Eastland like riding a bicycle, “wobbly at first, then steady as she got underway.”
Donations for the families poured into the American Red Cross and they disbursed the money to the family members after an interview with each family. Belle and Alvey Stevens were given $102.00 from Grace’s life insurance, $126.00 from Emergency Relief, and $630 from donations. (In today’s money it would be about 20,000.)
The Western Electric Company also changed its hiring practice after the tragedy and gave first priority to anyone who had a family member killed in the accident. Alvey was given his sister’s spot in the company.
The headlines of the local newspapers mentioned this hometown girl who had been killed in the horrible tragedy. They also mentioned that her mother and brother traveled with Grace’s body so they could lay her to rest beside her father in the Rockton Cemetery.
Despite research, there are no records to tell of what happened to Alvey and Belle after Grace’s death. Neither is mentioned in the records for the Rockton cemetery.

It’s an excellent time to learn how to care for and respect yourself. You’ll also discover what you’re passionate about in life and take the first steps toward more rewarding challenges.
Rigoberto Ortega 77 Machesney Park 1/22/2023
You’re worried about what’s next in your career, but you’ll find the insight you need to correct your course. When it comes to your health, you’ll permanently cure a problem plaguing you.
At work, you’ll be beset with many clients. At home, you’ll be equally busy managing various family activities. You’re the one they count on to organize everything.
After some muchneeded rest, you’ll return to work more productive than ever, resulting in a promotion. You’ll be offered, at the very least, an upper management position or a chance to start your own business.
After a disagreement, you’ll flee to a new and exciting adventure instead of fighting. You’ll take a wise path and make a game out of avoiding people that bring you down.
You’ll be hypersensitive and feel as though the world is against you. This may be a message from life that it’s time to make some necessary changes.
Much travel is in store. Family and friends will need your services and a listening ear. You’ll receive an abundance of gratitude and appreciation from them.
Love is top of mind. If you’re single, you’ll meet that special someone who wants to make a longterm commitment. If you’re in a relationship, you’ll make longterm plans to solidify your union.
This week, your exceptional interpersonal skills will come in handy. You’ll organize an event that turns out to be a huge success. All your initiative will have a surprising impact on your future.
This week, your life will be full of spectacular twists and turns. However, time isn’t on your side. Although the path may be unclear, one of your dreams will become more attainable.
You’ll feel drained after a few stressful days. However, you’ll feel particularly creative and make a masterpiece that brings you success.
If you haven’t been feeling well, take some time to rest. Fortunately, your sleep will have a double benefit, and you’ll regain your vitality. You may accomplish something big.
After the holidays, you may feel as if your house has been turned upside down, and you’ll be in a hurry to tidy up. You’ll declutter your home, which will also clear your mind.
You’ll speak your mind and say out loud what others are thinking. You may also be the inspiration for a poem or quote that spreads worldwide.
You’ll be concerned about your financial situation. You’ll feel anxious because of a misunderstanding, such as a bill that wasn’t meant for you. Once the problem is sorted, you’ll feel like yourself again.
Now is the time to act. Those close to you will successfully invite you on several outings and get you out of the house. You may be convinced to join a group fitness class, for example.

Whether you have time off, you’ll spend the week with your family, or at least in your home. You could take advantage of the next few days to reconsider your decor and move some furniture around to clear your mind.
Weigh the pros and cons before making a significant decision. You’ll be invited to an event requiring you to dress up, such as a business dinner or a romantic outing.
You’ll be pressed for time and unable to put off specific tasks any longer. You’ll be responsible for emergencies and important files at work, which will help boost your career.
You’ll need a second cup of coffee in the morning to find your energy and stop procrastinating. Then, you’ll be highly efficient in carrying out new projects and cross many items off your todo list.
