Fast, Faster, Fastest Flatbeds Reach High Speeds

Recent flatbed announcements from several vendors included upgrades in print speed. or example, in January of this year, swiss print announced speed increases in its newest eneration flatbed printers by percent.

ardware, in chemistry, and software all play a role in flatbeds becoming faster. he change is a logical progression. “ he increasing speed is a product of both mar et pressures and technological evolution. ustomers demand a faster turnaround and technology delivers the tools to ma e it possible driving a cycle of continuous improvement,” shares a representative from tratoJet .

he connotations associated with wallpaper range from something antique you might have seen in your grandmother’s living room to s floral prints in a teen’s bedroom. Well-adhered to the walls, this wallpaper was durable—if not permanent. Many new homeowners are tasked with removing this same wallpaper today.

With this in mind, it’s no surprise that wallpaper might present less than positive thoughts. But today’s solutions and the formulations used to adhere them are not your grandmother’s wallpaper! And more people are realizing it—brand owners, interior design houses, and DIY storefronts.

he influx in interest has led to requests for more custom pieces, and here is where digital print steps up.

According to the Digitally Printed Wallpaper Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report from Straits Research, the global digitally

printed wallpaper market size was valued atUSD $3.65 billion in 2024and is projected to reach fromUSD $4.29 billion in 2025 to USD $15.65 billion by 2033, growing at acompound annual growth rate of 17.56 percentduring the forecast period of 2025 to 2033.

“Printed wallpapers provide several benefits compared to traditional wallpapers, including enhanced durability, appealing aesthetics, cost effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. It offers a flexible and aesthetically pleasing choice for enhancing walls in various settings, including homes,

business spaces, and creative installations,” states the Digitally Printed Wallpaper Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report from Straits Research.

Economical for short runs, promoting eco-friendliness, and thanks to certain inks designed for durability in high-traffic areas, it’s no surprise that media manufacturers are creating materials optimized for digital print.

Print service providers (PSPs) need to capitalize on this. Especially those who own a wide format printer and are potentially already involved in wallcoverings used for signage and promotion.

Walls Are Worth It

Digitally printed wallpaper can quickly transform both commercial and residential spaces. A combination of today’s printing technologies, media options, and trends in customization fuel its growing popularity.

“Digitally printed wallpaper is widely available, cost effective, and compatible with most wide format printers. For commercial and residential spaces, it offers a unique way to personalize and enhance interiors, boosting both visual appeal and atmosphere,” says Jay Kroll, director of product education, General Formulations.

Vince Queau, senior sales representative, Monadnock Paper Mills, believes digitally printable

wallpaper is gaining momentum because “it allows for complete creative freedom and high-impact visuals while offering flexibility in installation and removal. The ability to produce short runs and fully customized designs makes it appealing for both businesses and homeowners.”

“Digitally printed wallpaper is cost effective and customizable for small runs. It is ideal to integrate and adapt with interior design and branding trends,” adds Peter Bourgeois, territory manager, Drytac.

According to Jenny Baillargeon, business developer nonwovens; Anna Brikh, product manager; and Ryan Mills, sales manager, Ahlstrom, “in commercial settings, wallpaper can be easily renewed to reflect new sales or promotions, offering great flexibility. or residential spaces it enables the design of custom murals without the limitations of traditional repeating patterns.”

“Home or wall décor has taken off over the past five years with our industry pushing to decorate a single wall in the home or office to enhance the space and create an enjoyable atmosphere or a means to promote your company or product,” explains Walter ierlach, president, hoto ex roup nc.

Growth in this segment is partly due to the advent of digital production in combination with a surge in ecommerce. This has “expanded the scope of color and design, making wallcoverings appear more accessible and available on demand from a myriad of

sources,” says Jay Udovich, senior business development manager, Faze 3 SMS.

The capability to economically produce short runs is a credit to digital print’s capabilities. This opens the door for customization. “People can choose a pattern, change the color, and then remove it easily— wallpaper is no longer a permanent fixture if you don’t want it to be. Even paste-to-the-wall materials are easier to remove now than before,” continues Angel Georgiou, senior product marketing specialist, Canon U.S.A., Inc.

Opportunities are endless in terms of imagery. “Digitally printed wallpaper is highly customizable to unique design and produces rich photographic quality imagery,” states a marketing representative from Beaver Paper & Graphic Media, Inc.

“The end user feels empowered to make their own decisions on color and design. The advent of modern media production capabilities also serves to make wallcovering easier to install and remove as tastes evolve,” agrees Udovich.

Michael Richardson, business development manager – graphics media, Jessup Manufacturing Co., believes that “with advancements in print-on-demand inkjet technology, designers can easily produce personalized, one-of-akind designs or repeat patterns across various surfaces—bringing greater creativity and flexibility to interior environments.”

ustainability influences digitally printed wallpaper’s increase in

demand. “Sustainability is becoming a top priority—customers want products that align with their values without sacrificing performance or aesthetics. Today’s premium wallcoverings combine rich color reproduction, easy installation, and clean removal with eco-friendly materials and industry-leading safety standards,” notes Queau.

Sign Shop or Artist?

PSPs operating in the wide format space constantly look for ways to differentiate and keep customers in house instead of outsourcing. If wallcoverings/wall graphics are already offered—adding wallpaper makes sense.

“Digitally printed wallpaper offers PSPs a versatile and highmargin product line that meets

the growing demand for personalized interior décor. Short-run capabilities and rapid production times give PSPs a competitive edge, especially in markets like retail, hospitality, and corporate segments where branded environments are essential,” suggests Queau.

With the wallpaper market growing in both commercial and residential spaces, “businesses want branded feature walls, while DIY homeowners want custom designs. This market can give service providers an entirely new, scalable revenue stream,” states Bourgeois.

Kroll sums it up, “in short, it’s profitable. s long as you use materials designed for wall applications and have a skilled installation team, printing wall

graphics can be a very lucrative business opportunity.”

“Digitally printed wallpaper offers s an opportunity to expand into a high-margin market. The perceived value of a customi ed wallcovering is significantly higher than that of standard graphics, allowing PSPs to charge premium pricing. It also opens doors to both commercial and

residential applications, increasing the breadth of potential customers,” adds Richardson.

Media options are vast. Furthermore, the science of digital print allows inventory levels to remain low. “Digital printing requires minimal space for production, ma ing it an efficient choice. he print-on-demand model allows for effective inventory management

with short runs, keeping stock levels low. There is a wide offering of textures and finishes,” share Baillargeon, Brikh, and Mills.

There is also the option to just print the wallpaper, and outsource design. “The opportunity to coordinate with local interior designers to produce regionally influenced designs and provide unique interior elements should continue to fuel growth in demand over the long term as the ecommerce channel becomes easier to navigate,” suggests Udovich.

Although, outsourcing design help isn’t necessary. ess complex images without repeat patterns— what we traditionally think of when we think of wallpaper—are possible and sometimes preferred. “The capability to print large murals quickly and the option to print one image instead of having to produce an abundance of one pattern at a time,” is certainly a reason to utilize digital print here, says Gierlach.

Spot the Difference

Digitally printed wallpaper is similar to a wallcovering that functions as a sign or some type of graphic, but there are inherent differences to consider.

Udovich believes “there is a fair amount of potential overlap in the commercial sign sector, especially as more of the stakeholders in that market segment push for PVCfree solutions, but the installation

technique employed by the two different segments are distinctly different and require some basic adjustment to the skill set.”

Installation, in particular matching seams between panels and properly aligning top to bottom and left to right, may be a challenge for someone who hasn’t worked with wallpaper before. “For paneling, you may need to flip every other panel so the overlapping edges are printed on the same side of the printer, minimizing any potential color shift. During installation, pay attention to both the vertical and horizontal alignment to ensure the graphic lines up with the ceiling and floor trim without leaving gaps,” explains Kroll.

“Wallpaper patterns usually repeat, so it’s important to use a blockout material. These panels will need to be overlapped, and these opaque blockout materials make the image across the wall look seamless,” notes Gierlach.

Due to the repetitive nature of the graphics, as well as the coverage of a large surface—i.e. wall— “wallpaper tends to require higher quality, greater color consistency, and accurate seams. Considering that wallpaper may be in closer quarters, more environmentally friendly ink and media solutions such as and latex on paper” are preferred, continues Bourgeois.

“Unlike standard signage, wallpaper must integrate seamlessly with architectural elements and endure longer term exposure. PSPs must consider wall dimensions, surface textures, and environmental factors—such as

humidity or temperature fluctuations—when selecting the appropriate media and adhesive systems for the application,” recommends Richardson.

Another difference is in the media itself. “Whereas sign vinyl mounted on walls traditionally has a thin smooth glossy or satin finish and can be highly extensible, digitally printed wallcovering is more a fiber-based product designed around a type’ specification, Type I or Type II,” shares Udovich.

Adhesive technology can also differ. “ here are a mix of media types—some with adhesive on the back, or some with paste to water activate. The material needs to handle well for installation purposes. If it’s too thick or too thin it’s not a good experience,” recommends Georgiou.

“Wallcoverings typically use prepasted or water-activated adhesives that allow for repositioning and clean removal without damaging the wall,” seconds Queau.

More traditional “wallpaper is directly glued to the wall, which makes it more permanent than a sign,” adds a marketing representative from Beaver Paper & Graphic Media, Inc.

First Timers

There are some important considerations for PSPs producing wallpaper for the first time.

Baillargeon, Brikh, and Mills say PSPs should identify their target market—residential or commercial first, as this influences substrate choice.

n the commercial sector, for example, Udovich highlights a real demand for textured surfaces.

Choosing substrates with sustainable values is favorable for both residential and commercial customers. “Customers increasingly seek products that look great and align with environmental values, so highlighting features li e certification, compliance with California 01350 indoor air quality standards, and lass ’ fire ratings can give PSPs a competitive edge,” admits Queau.

For those new to wallpaper, Queau says it is key to start with the right product and process. “Testing print settings on the specific substrate and in system whether latex or in et helps ensure consistent results.”

Georgiou recommends beginning with simple projects, which allows PSPs to learn how to install the job on their own.

“Start with your own space. Try out different wall materials, test various film and adhesive options, and then install a mural in your shop to gain hands-on experience. When it comes to design, you can keep it simple by using a repeating pattern from a stock site and tiling it in your RIP software, or take the opportunity to showcase your creativity and branding,” shares Kroll.

In reference to installation, an introductory experience should entail “pre-pasted wallcoverings with water-activated adhesives, which simplify the process for professional installers and home DIY enthusiasts,” admits Queau.

“ first-time wallcovering producer needs to concentrate on the features, advantages, and benefits of their available product options when talking with their potential buyer. If it is installed as a DIY product, in a residential or light commercial application space, focus in on the ease of use, follow the

manufacturers recommendation for installation. If it is a paste-thebacking or paste-the-wall application, be sure to recommend a quality and proven wallcovering adhesive to simplify the task,” advises Udovich.

Bright Future

Digitally printed wallpaper is a logical extension of wallcoverings that any PSP can gently step into. Both commercial and residential spaces expect wallpaper that elevates the environment but also can be changed fairly quickly if need be. These trends aren’t changing anytime soon.

“The market for wallcovering in the U.S. is still relatively small, compared to Europe and Asia, with about 20 percent market penetration. There is a bright future for continued growth opportunities in the U.S.,” shares Udovich.

Our May webinar, available on digitaloutput.net, looks into this topic in more depth. D

ide format cutting tables offer task versatility—from tangential and oscillating cutting to creasing and sometimes extending to routing and engraving. Driving these functions are bits, blades, pens, underlays, conveyor belts, and creasing instruments. Finishing tools are an essential investment for a print service provider (PSP) and ultimately impact productivity and the bottom line.

OEM and Third Party

Both OEM and third-party finishing tools are on the market for PSPs.

As an OEM, Chris Nicholson, team lead, inside sales, Zund America, Inc., points out that Zünd offers a range of precision-engineered, highquality consumables designed specifically for Zünd digital cutting systems. “This includes every type of consumable used in conjunction with all processing methods available with our cutting/routing systems, including blades, bits, creasing tools, pen/marking inserts, cutting underlays, and conveyor belts.”

As a systems manufacturer, Nicholson believes that Zünd puts a great deal of effort into the design and development of each tool in

order to maximize the overall performance of the cutting equipment, “where literally every single component matters.”

Zünd holds patents on many designs, meaning it has tooling and consumable items exclusive to Zünd and not available from other sources. “Because we control every aspect of the manufacturing process, we are able to ensure quality at the highest level possible, an advantage that is generally not available to third-party resellers,” shares Nicholson.

Above) Kongsberg’s tooling solutions enhance productivity and streamline finishing operations.

Nicholson notes that all Zünd blades and bits are marked with the company’s insignia, part numbers, and batch numbers to ensure quality, consistency, as well as traceability.

Similarly, cutting system manufacturer, Kongsberg Precision Cutting Systems, provides a comprehensive range of OEM cutting consumables, including high-performance knife blades, router bits, crease wheels, and milling accessories.

“Kongsberg’s innovative tooling solutions enhance productivity and streamline finishing operations. The VariAngle Tool enables

cutting at any angle between zero and 60 degrees without manual adjustments, eliminating the need for frequent tool changes. This increases productivity by at least 25 percent and allows for the creation of complex, threedimensional (3D) designs in corrugated and display materials,” shares Knut Ulvøy Johansen, product manager, Kongsberg.

Another Kongsberg tooling solution is the CorruSpeed Tool, which Johansen says is designed for high-speed corrugated board cutting without oscillation, reducing processing time while enhancing cut edge quality.

Kongsberg offers milling bits and router blades—over 100 different knife blades to choose from, available in both single- and double-flute variations. “Kongsberg’s consumables are crafted from high-grade tungsten carbide, ensuring longer tool life, reducing replacement frequency, and improving cut quality while reducing rework and material waste. These consumables are also optimized for cutting speeds further increasing overall equipment productivity, allowing print providers to enhance efficiency,” adds Johansen.

For applications requiring higher performance and productivity,

Kongsberg also offers routing bits and blades that contain a unique C2 coating. Johansen explains that this coating is thinner while still providing an exceptionally sharp, hard, smooth, and durable surface for superior cutting. He says it results in a 60 percent reduction in friction compared to standard diamondlike carbon coatings, allowing it to last longer and enhancing efficiency, which in turn means less power consumption.

This C2 coating is also 100 percent biocompatible and is approved for food, medical, and dental applications, says Johansen.

Reputable third-party tooling providers are also an option.

For example, Superior Carbide Cutting Tools & Helicon Graphics offers third-party cutting consumables, service, parts, and fully refurbished large format digital flatbed cutting tables.

“Our products are made to meet or exceed OEM quality standards guaranteed. We are the largest independent supplier of blades, router bits, belts, and underlay in North America,” stresses Mark Boncher, VP of sales and marketing, Superior Carbide Cutting Tools & Helicon Graphics.

He says the company’s extensive knowledge and experience in this industry, combined with its customer service first mindset and reputation of quality tools at a great price set it apart from the competition. “We carry a massive array of blades and router bits for

any flatbed cutting application. We are a one-stop shop for everything customers need and provide free remote technical support—plus we can do in-person services like preventative maintenance, installs, and de-installs,” offers Boncher.

Andrew Pagelow, VP, sales, VTX Tools, adds that third parties offer an array of products and more cost-effective pricing. “Without third-party suppliers of tooling like VTX Tools, OEMs were able to set the price and quality for their specific machine without any pushback or challenge. Competition is good for any industry, it is the driver of innovation, and of course, better pricing. With the influx of competition, it has driven everyone involved to develop better products, and new products, which have solved issues with problematic applications and materials. Overall, it improved the overall finish on wide format digitally printed substrates.”

Consider Cost

There are advantages and limitations when deciding whether to purchase a cutting tool through an OEM or a thirdparty provider.

“Purchasers are— and always have been—looking for ways to save money, especially when it comes to operating costs,” admits Nicholson. “Zünd prices are quite competitive with non-OEM blades and bits, and once you couple that with longer blade/bit life—less downtime for blade/bit changes, as well as higher and more consistent cut quality—greater material yield, less waste, Zünd consumables are an economic choice.”

Johansen points out that Kongsberg tools are tested and certified for full compatibility with Kongsberg cutting tables. “They are developed, manufactured, and tested by the Kongsberg team in association with selected blade manufacturers. The metals used are carefully selected to resist wear and breakage. Then, they are ground to extremely tight tolerances. Before they are shipped, they undergo 100 percent quality control.”

Kongsberg only offers OEM manufactured drilling and routing bits and wider consumables as a

a

and

and

matter of quality, productivity, ensuring longevity, and safety—not just for the operators but also for the final consumer to ensure no sharp or hard edges, which could present a hazard, are present in the final product, adds Johansen.

“The speed at which these tables run is also a key safety consideration for using OEM knives and blades. To allow our customers to get the most of their cutting table safely, the router bits are perfectly balanced for up to 60,000 rotations per minute (RPMs), which is the maximum RPM on our spindles,” says Johansen.

On the other side of the argument, Boncher advocates for purchasing through third party. “Third-party consumables companies can provide high-quality tools at lower cost. Our company can also provide top-notch technical support and service for customers. We can regularly provide savings of 30 to 40 percent on tools versus an OEM.If buying a brand new machine from an OEM you may get certain discounts on tools for a set period of time, and there may be a very few amount of odd tools that are OEM specific,” he argues.

Noticeable Demand

Whether you buy OEM or third party, experts see a noticeable rise in demand when it comes to cutting consumables.

Pagelow says the growth in wide format digital print may have slowed a bit but he does see new applications in different industries emerging as well as new materials that need to be processed.

“A general trend we have seen is an increase year-on-year in the demand of cutting consumables,” shares Johansen.

“Growth in small- and mediumsize businesses seems to be driving the cutting industry—and cutting consumable sales—as it is becoming more of a main income stream for a larger array of companies, as well as more attainable for them, and there are more people trained in this field of industry,” offers Boncher.

Increased demand is expected based on customer needs as a general shift towards the use of new and more sustainable materials leads to the development of new consumables that need to be able to cut through the material.

Johansen points out that materials such as honeycomb board, “require sharper, more durable blades capable of handling tougher, highly recycled content substrates without compromising quality.”

Nicholson also sees a rise in demand for tooling along with an increased demand for cutting equipment and automation solutions in general. “This is partly due to the still tight labor market and growing cost of labor but also the result of the greater production efficiencies and profitability made possible in many cases through automation. Economic uncertainties, chaotic trade policies, anticipated price increases, and supply chain disruptions continue to motivate many North American manufacturers to increase domestic production

capacities, in some cases investing in multiple locations within North America to meet market demand and increase proximity to a company’s customer base.”

The rise of customization also drives this increase as consumers continue to order short run, digitally customized goods that require digital finishing. Johansen says this impacts the need for high-precision tooling, “particularly for shorter run production where efficiency and accuracy are essential.”

Boncher cautions that as consumable demand grows, it is within the confines of a maturing industry. “Cutting tables are nothing brand new and while more machines are sold each year, you can easily argue that the industry itself has matured. Therefore, the consumable demand is still growing, but tempered compared to the growth seen when these types of tables were first introduced.”

Boncher adds that there has been major consolidation among large companies who purchase cutting tables, “which can lead to more efficiencies, but does not always garner massive growth in a maturing market.”

Finishing Trends

As previously noted, basic trends in the cutting consumables space follow trends in materials being printed on or used more in certain industries.

As the printing industry grows and changes, new digitally printed substrates continue to come to market, which presents the need for new tooling. “That being said, in addition to the hundreds of cutting solutions on our website, VTX Tools also offers hundreds of custom blades/bits in our product portfolio for customers’ specific needs,” comments Pagelow.

In addition, advances in the cutters themselves drive trends in cutting consumables. “Not necessarily vice versa in either of those cases,” offers Boncher.

Boncher adds that “the general level of quality in North America and Europe of cutting consumables has never been better, and customers have never had more options. The emergence of more choices in acrylics, dibonds, foamboards, fabrics, and more have meant the consumables need to keep pace, as well as creative new techniques using these consumables, and finally new software to create even better and more uniform finished products.”

As an OEM, Nicholson says Zünd puts a great deal of research and

development efforts into producing new and better coatings for blades and bits. “Incorporating these products in our consumables offering will further help our customers save on operating costs both in terms of extended blade/ bit life and consistent cut quality.”

Johansen notes that as cost and time of production become increasingly important, there is growth in demand for premium cutting consumables that deliver faster and more reliable production.

“The high-quality C2 coated consumables are a perfect example of how an initial investment can pay off in the long run. Not just thanks to their extended lifetime but also by delivering fewer production stops and cleaner cutting finish, which means less afterwork,” adds Johansen.

Finishing Focused

When it comes to productivity, finishing should be factored into the equation. In addition to cutting systems, consumables like cutting blades, bits, and belts have an impact on equipment efficiency, productivity, and versatility. D
