THE IRON ROAD

WILLIAM GILMOUR

William Gilmour was born in 1922 in the hill foot village of Alva in Clackmannanshire. When he was five he moved with his parents to Dunfermline where his father found work in a shipbreaker’s yard. He left school at fourteen and started work as a locomotive engine cleaner at Shore Road depot in Stirling at the outbreak of World War II. Apart from five years’ service in the RAF as a wireless operator/airgunner, he spent his entire working life on the footplate of both steam and diesel locomotives. This is his story.
