Services of the Roanoke Valley

Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke Valley provides specialized and adaptive recreation and leisure services that empower people with disabilities to gain the knowledge and skills needed for the development of a leisure lifestyle that meets their interests and needs. The programs listed in this guide are designed to meet the needs and interests of individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities, head injury related disabilities, or who have psychiatric disabilities.

Registration Registration is taken via telephone, email, postal mail, or in person at the Brambleton Center. Mail-in and email registrations will be processed the morning of registration in the order in which they were received, and may be submitted prior to the registration date. Registration can occur up to 2 weeks before the first day of a program. Unless otherwise written, TRS programs will occur at the Brambleton Center. Participants will not be able to register for programs if they have an outstanding balance of over $200. Participants need to pay for a program before it occurs. If a program meets for multiple weeks, payment must be made before the last meeting of the program.

TRS Support Staff Support Staff assist as needed in all aspects of your participation in TRS programs. Duties may include: assisting with transportation, supervision, limited personal care, prompting, and support as participants work towards individual program goals.

High Demand Classes & Wait Lists Sometimes programs may fill before the registration session concludes. TRS considers these “High Demand” classes. “High Demand” classes are marked with a next to the title. If a class fills, the participant will automatically be placed on a wait list.

Participants will be contacted if placed on the wait list and a space becomes available.

Transportation Transportation fee is $3.00 for each round trip, for those who need to be picked up for programs. Programs that have the word LIMITED after the transportation fee, only offer transportation from home for those who live independently, or in group homes without transportation, all other participants can meet at a pick-up point or at the program. Transportation is only provided at pick-up points for trips outside the Roanoke Valley. TRS Transportation pick-up points are: Brambleton Center, Goodwill Salem-Lakeside Plaza, Goodwill Vinton, and 460 Antique Mall.

Inclusion People with disabilities are encouraged to participate in recreation programs that meet their interest and function level. Please check out Roanoke County, City of Roanoke, and City of Salem general recreation programs. Contact TRS for more information about Inclusion Services.

Request for Inclusion Service must be made at least two weeks prior to the start of the program. Transportation is not provided for general recreation programs.

Pitch a tent, roll out your sleeping bag and make s’mores around a camp fire at the highest park in the state of Virginia.

We’ll hike less than a mile to see wild ponies that free range throughout the highlands and enjoy several meals outdoors.

Participants must bring their own sleeping bag and a pad is recommended. Participants must be independent in personal care, bring and administer their medications, and be able to participate in moderate physical activity. Participants should dress in layers for cool weather and bring flashlight.

NEW: Stiles Waterfall at Camp Alta Mons

‘Stiles Waterfall, where is that and why haven’t I heard of it?’

It’s only one of the most amazing waterfalls in the greater Roanoke Valley. Located on the property of Camp Alta Mons this 45 foot tall near vertical falls is sure to please. We’ll forge the creek 3 times as we walk a leisurely 1.5 miles to the base of the falls where we’ll munch on trail mix and snap a few photos.

NEW: Emerald Hollow Mine

It has been said that diamonds are a girls best friend, but you haven’t heard about Hiddenite yet! Emerald Hollow Mine is full of jewels including emeralds, sapphires, garnets, and many semi-precious stones. Be prepared to get dirty since you will ‘pan’ for gems yourself while sitting at a covered water sluice. It’s recommended that you bring a towel to clean up. Trip includes instruction on sluicing and a Subway lunch combo to eat on site. You’ve never had so much fun getting dirty! Transportation from pick-up points only.

Spring is the perfect time to get out and about. So sign up for the Weekenders Club where we’ll take a leisurely drive and enjoy some of the area’s most visited attractions. In March, visit the Mill Mountain Zoo for their annual Spring Fling. Bring a packed lunch to enjoy at the Star Overlook. For April, travel to Martinsville to see the exhibits at the Natural History Museum. Bring money to eat at Fenderz Drive In. Lastly, we’ll head down to Bridgewater Plaza at Smith Mountain Lake.

Bring money for shopping and lunch at one of the many restaurants. We’ll end this program with a stop at Homestead Creamery for a scoop of the best icecream around!

TRS’s next overnight trip is guaranteed to be one of the best yet! Nestled between the Cape Fear River and Atlantic Ocean, the North Carolina Coastal town of Wilmington is a destination you don’t want to miss! First, we will stop in Raleigh, NC to tour the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, which is the largest institution of its kind in the South East, and, one of the nation’s most amazing museums about the natural world. Once we arrive in beautiful, historic Wilmington, NC, trip highlights include a tour of the Battleship North Carolina where we’ll be given an illustrated tour of the museum, a horse-drawn carriage tour, where our costumed driver narrates a unique adventure along the riverfront and pass stately mansions of historic Wilmington. Other activities include a catamaran cruise to Eagles Island to observe the native NC coastal wildlife, Hollywood Location walking tour where over 400 TV shows and movies have been filmed. Lastly, a visit to the Aquarium at Fort Fisher. All meals, activity fees, transportation and lodging is included in the program fee. Do you ever dream of a 17 mile downhill bike ride? What about a live stage performance guaranteed to tug your heart strings and have you laughing at the same time. We’ll bike the White Top to Damascus section of the Virginia Creeper Trail, stay overnight in Abingdon, at the Quality Inn, have meals in unique eating establishments, and attend the Barter Theatre’s production of Big Fish. Relationships can be hard for anyone; between friends, family members, and romantic partners. This three week class will focus on how to communicate with peers and learning these skills through role-playing. The primary focus will be how to respect yourself and others. This is a great class for participants struggling with making friends, communicating feelings appropriately, and those interested in being a good partner to someone they care about. In the last meeting, participants will be discussing intimacy. Participants who took the previous course are strongly encouraged to sign up.

Choose from two of the latest movies and enjoy a great Saturday at Carmike 10, Tanglewood. alent. It can be described as a natural aptitude or a skill. The Cambridge Dictionary states that talent is “a natural ability to be good at something, especially without being taught”. TRS participant Linda Perry has displayed her natural talent for writing poetry. Her dedicated and prolific commitment to writing has resulted in becoming a published author!

Ms. Perry freely admits that she has not always written to express her feelings and thoughts. She explained that she started writing in 2013. Her powem, “Women of the World,” came to her while lying in bed one night.

She felt compelled to write it down, and took the initiative to get out of bed, find a pen and paper and capture those fleeting thoughts before they vanished.

Linda added that for some odd reason, she feels most inspired when writing on the back of an envelope. She explained that when she writes on a piece of paper, she finds the process less inspired and more laborious.

She still manages to crank out at least one poem a day.

Linda humbly admitted that she had already written two poems on the morning of this interview.

Linda believes that her poetry is a gift of God. She believes that there have been gifts of divine inspiration that she did not acknowledge or use, but emphasized that she has fully dedicated herself to using this gift.

She describes this talent as a “sixth sense”, or as she defines it, “like something that you didn’t have” and “that the pen just goes by itself”. Linda also believes that her talent has made her more sensitive to the feelings and needs of people around her, in a manner that she has never experienced in her life.

When asked how her book originated, Linda explained that a friend shared one of her poems with the friend’s employer, who is also a published author. The author recognized Linda’s creativity and encouraged her to continue to write her poetry. With his guidance, Linda assembled almost a hundred poems for a book. After many frustrating delays and unforeseen circumstances, they got her book published and in print. A Celebration of Life: A Woman’s Book of Poems is currently for sale on Amazon.com.

Linda describes the thrill of being in print as “indescribable”! She added that people “just don’t know the joy” she experiences every day. Linda stated that at times in her life, she has felt inferior to others. The success of getting published has taught her that she is indeed as good as other people. She is quick to add that she isn’t better than others, just equal. She also said that she has enough material for at least two more books, and expresses confidence that her writing is getting better. It’s a well-known cliché that practice makes perfect. If that’s true, then the sky is truly the limit for Linda Perry!
