Dear friends and neighbors, Just over five years ago, Roanoke County took over operation of Explore Park through a 99-year lease with the Virginia Recreational Facilities Authority. It has been a joy to watch the park begin to fulfill our community’s vision as out lined in Explore Park’s adventure plan. This season marks our biggest expansion of recreation amenities to date, including the addition of Treetop Quest, an aerial obstacle course for ages four and up. Other vendor partners like Blue Mountain Adventures, Don’s Cab-Inns and Twin Creeks Brewing Company are launching new services at the park over the next few months. As a Roanoke County resident, I’m proud to be a part of this exciting project. Despite its importance in regional tourism and economic development, Explore Park is first and foremost a community asset. We invite you to explore our 14 miles of trails, boat or fish along the beautiful Roanoke River gorge, or participate in a growing lineup of nature programs this summer. It’s the place where adventure begins! Sincerely,

Director of Parks, Recreation & Tourism FEATURED CONTENT OUR FEATURED CONTENT IS HIGHLIGHTED BY OUR LOGO THUMBNAIL.

COMING SOON!

BRUGH TAVERN

BREWING IN THE BRUGH

Twin Creeks Brewing to operate brewery and restaurant at Explore Park’s Brugh Tavern Twin Creeks Brewing at Explore Park will begin operation at the Brugh Tavern facility in fall 2019. This expansion is the second location for the Vintonbased brewery. “We’re excited about all of the amenities that are coming to the park,” Andy Bishop, Co-Owner of Twin Creeks Brewing Company. “We believe it is an excellent complement for the outdoor lifestyle that the park is already attracting.”

Live music on the porch will be a weekly staple, with fire pits and outdoor games available on the lawn.

The first phase will have the facility begin as a brewery utilizing food trucks similar to their downtown Vinton location. Brewing will take place on site with a focus on lighter, farmhouse ales.

Phase two of the project will incorporate the downstairs tavern that will feature local, Virginia wines and ciders. This phase will also include a locally sourced restaurant.

Flagship beers from their Vinton location will be on tap, including Summerfield Blonde, Spring Water Kolsch and All About That Amber to list a few.

We’ll have more information about Twin Creeks Brewing at Explore Park in the fall publication!

FLOW INTO YOGA AT BRAMBLETON Abby Reed was an active, three-sport athlete in high school, and that rigorous schedule takes a toll on many athletes. Her experience with yoga began in college at Virginia Tech. “I went to the chiropractor often, and I felt like I was in pain and off-balance. Once I got to college I saw a yoga studio in downtown Blacksburg and I decided to give yoga a try!” Today, she is a certified yoga instructor at the Brambleton Center! It has been 11 years since her yoga journey began. “Ever since I started yoga, I’ve hardly had to go to the chiropractor or doctor because my body has naturally realigned and strengthened itself to where much of the pain I had in athletics is gone.” Her passion for yoga and interest in learning what poses impact each part of the body is what drove her to become an instructor. Courses concentrate on form and technique with a creative theme such as I Love the 90’s and Glow and Flow. Many styles of yoga exist. Abby’s courses, seen below, practice vinyasa-style yoga. This meditative-focused style of yoga is fluid, focusing on flowing from one pose to another. When it comes to the courses, “You

don’t have to think of anything other than breathing into a pose, and exhaling in a pose.” Brambleton’s yoga courses are six-weeks in duration, which gives participants a dedicated time to themselves for 45 minutes to an hour. “I feel privileged to teach people in that space, and give them that break in their day!” The benefits of yoga can help us take a break from the stresses of our environment. “It allows you space, mentally and physically, to rest, even though we’re being active, we’re able to rest and reenergize the body.” Beginners are welcome, and no experience is required to take one of our yoga courses offered at Brambleton Center. As far as equipment goes, mats, straps and blocks are provided for participants. “Yoga is a lifelong practice,” says Abby, “You can modify it for every physical ability you can think of!” If you’re looking for a new way to unwind from the stresses of the day, or if you want to refresh with a group and gain a sense of community, then check out our new yoga classes below!

CELEBRATING ABILITIES SUMMER CAMPS

By: Kari Decker

Kids of all abilities can learn new skills, make friends, and have a great time through recreation programs and camps. Including kids with different abilities helps all children learn valuable skills such as how to play and grow together. Recreation is an excellent way to focus on how people are more similar than they are different, so they can find common ground. Roanoke County takes pride in working with families and care givers to help kids be successful in our programs and camps. The first step to supporting campers is completing the Roanoke County Camp Health Form. When families or care givers complete the County Health Form and document that their child has a disability, an IEP, or is on medication, Roanoke County Therapeutic Recreation Services staff will contact the family to ask follow up questions. Does your child have a reward system? Do they need a little extra help making friends? Is there a medical protocol in place? This will help staff know how to support a child to be as successful as possible. For example, if your child has a hard time hearing directions when they are focused on a project, a staff would know to take the time to speak directly to them when it is time to clean up. If your child has strength or balance difficulties, staff may plan to walk next to your child when crossing uneven ground. Knowing what techniques or accommodations work with your child will help staff support them during their time at a program or camp. Roanoke County has had great success when staff know what a child’s needs are, and the camp is a good fit. Children with Down syndrome, Autism, physical disabilities, or sensory disabilities can have a wonderful time at our programs and camps. The key is to know what things work best for your child and what you and your child’s goals are – other than having a great time. Kindness and acceptance can be taught in different ways, but we can all learn and grow through recreation. Learning from each other and accepting people for who they are is an important part of creating an inclusive community in Roanoke. While at Roanoke County camps, kids are learning to care more about how cool a Lego creation is than if the child who built it is has autism. Roanoke County offers a summer camp specifically for kids with multiple developmental disabilities. ACE Camp supports kids who need 1:1 to complete tasks, a consistent schedule, struggle with typical peers, and may not be appropriate for other camps. Visit RoanokeCountyParks.com/TRS for more information!
