BRUGH TAVERN

BREWING SOON Twin Creeks Brewing to operate brewery and restaurant at Explore Park’s Brugh Tavern

Twin Creeks Brewing at Explore Park will begin operation at the Brugh Tavern facility in fall 2019. This expansion is the second location for the Vintonbased brewery. “We’re excited about all of the amenities that are coming to the park,” Andy Bishop, Co-Owner of Twin Creeks Brewing Company. “We believe it is an excellent complement for the outdoor lifestyle that the park is already attracting.” The first phase will have the facility begin as a brewery utilizing food trucks similar to their downtown Vinton location. Brewing will take place on site with a focus on lighter, farmhouse ales. Flagship beers from their Vinton location will be on tap, including Summerfield Blonde, Spring Water Kolsch and All About That Amber to list a few. Live music on the porch will be a weekly staple, with fire pits and outdoor games available on the lawn. Phase two of the project will incorporate the downstairs tavern that will feature local, Virginia wines and ciders. This phase will also include a locally sourced restaurant. The Brugh Tavern was built between 1792 and 1800 as a private residence in Botetourt County. The home served as a tavern for thousands of migrating settlers during the early 19th century as they traveled along the Great Wagon Road. Original tavern operator Daniel Brugh served in the Revolutionary War in 1782 as a member of the 8th Company, 1st Battalion York Militia.

16

Soon the building will return to its historical roots as a modern tavern. Look for an announcement about opening dates and operating hours. EXPLORE RECREATION MAGAZINE • FALL 2019

TRIPS WITH TERRY 30 years of Trip Planning with Terry Flanary

By Alex North Day trips have been a staple at the Brambleton Center for many years, and Terry Flanary is the first person you’ll see. Terry was a Recreation Programmer at the center for 27 years, with a focus on adult leisure and senior adult programming. “I retired three and a half years ago,” says Terry. “Even though I programmed a lot of the adult recreation programs, my passion was always planning our trips for senior adults!” Terry’s passion for trip planning brought her back earlier this year to work part time and help plan the popular day trips She has planned each day trip for the fall program cycle, which you can see below and to the right. Her process begins with research. “I go online and research interesting places such as historic homes,” says Terry. From there, she reaches out to the destination to see if they are able to accommodate the groups which take a maximum of 50 participants. Pharsalia in September, for example, was a product of Terry’s research and simply picking up the phone. “I

researched it online and it was beautiful,” Terry explains. The historic venue in Nelson County hosts weddings and events. This trip includes a tour of the venue, as well as a catered lunch by the staff. Quilts on Barns is a new trip which was originated by Terry’s research from her time as a Recreation Programmer.“That trip began with a publication I picked up about Southern West Virginia and it had these gorgeous pictures of quilts on barns.” She contacted the tourism department for Monroe County, West Virginia and it was a go. “It was a great trip!” says Terry. The remaining three day trips on page 19 are Christmas themed. From “White Christmas” at Barter Theatre to Korner’s Folly at Christmas, and the very popular Christmas at Hotel Roanoke. “We always have a wonderful time on our day trips,” says Terry. You don’t have to worry about anything because Terry takes care of the itinerary. Just preregister and show up on the bus ready to have a great day. “You can relax, take in the scenery of the trip, and enjoy the ride!”

TRIPS TRIPS & TOURS NEW: PHARSALIA IN SEPTEMBER

This elegant home located in Nelson County offers stunning views of dePriest Mountain and was originally built in 1814 by William Massie. Steeped in rich history and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, hospitality has been a hallmark for nearly two centuries. Your guided tour includes the beautiful interior of the home and many of the original buildings, which are still in use today! Your delicious lunch buffet will be held on the manicured grounds of Pharsalia. A final stop before we leave the Pharsalia area is the Silver Creek and Seaman’s Orchard Packing Shed where you can purchase apples, apple butter, jams, jellies, and much more. Fee includes breakfast biscuit, all tour fees, lunch, bus transportation, and trip guide.

NEW: QUILTS ON BARNS

What are barn quilts? They are large, hand painted quilt patterns typically displayed on the front or side of a barn. Each block is a vibrantly colored patchwork with its own unique design. Your travels will take you to Monroe County, West Virginia, where you will have the opportunity to see several barn quilts and enjoy the fascinating history behind them. A step on guide from the historical society guides us through this scenic part of West Virginia. Special highlights of the day include lunch at the historic Rehoboth Church in Union, built in 1786 and a walking tour of Union including Ames Clair Hall and the Old Brick Church. The last stop of the day is at Cook’s Old Mill built in 1858! Fee includes breakfast biscuit, all tour fees, lunch, bus transportation, and trip guide.

NEW: KORNER'S FOLLY AT CHRISTMAS

Come along to Kernersville, NC for a guided tour of this architectural wonder once billed as “The Strangest Home in the World.” Built in 1880 by Jule Korner, an Interior Designer and Artist, this 22 room mansion may look normal on the outside but inside you will be amazed at this “eccentric” home. There are no two doorways or windows exactly alike, ceilings ranging from 5-25 feet, odd little hallways, 15 fireplaces (all different), trap doors, and much more. You will marvel at the elaborate hand laid tile and carved woodwork. The Mansion is especially magical at Christmas, with floor to ceiling garland and trees in nearly every room. In the afternoon you will enjoy a fascinating tour and shopping at Replacements, Ltd. located in Greensboro, NC. This 500,000 square foot facility maintains the world’s largest inventory of old and new china, crystal, silver and collectibles, some 12 million pieces representing more than 400,000 patterns. If you are missing or have broken a piece of your very special China or crystal pattern, this is the place to find it! SNAP INTO PHOTOGRAPHY

Local Photography Instructor brings her experience to new Photography and Photoshop courses at Green Ridge By Alex North Teena Cook has been a new photography instructor at Green Ridge since May 2019, but that is only a shutter-flash compared to her many years of experience behind the camera. Let’s take a look into the lens to look at her photography journey. “I majored in Communications and I always loved photography,” says Cook, “So, I minored in photography and took every class I could.” She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Northern Michigan University, and followed that up with a Master’s Degree in Communications from the University of Wyoming with a concentration in photography. Teena’s photography experience is broad, using the medium as both an occupation and a hobby. She has been in the portrait photography business since 1980. Along with her portrait business, she spent 30 years at Virginia Western Community College as a photography instructor where she taught beginning photography, nature photography, hand coloring, photo journalism and Photoshop to name a few. Her passion for teaching is apparent when she took some time to look back on the years as an instructor. “My favorite part was always when students would take really wonderful photographs. You would develop the photo in the dark room and put it in the developer.” With excitement in Teena’s voice, “All of a sudden magic appears on the paper and it’s gorgeous.” Photography has changed in many ways over the last 30 years, but her reaction has stayed constant. Teena's passion for nature photography captured below from a trip to Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon in Iceland.

Teena Cook has traveled to many places in the world taking photographs, including the one above from Italy.

“Now that things are digital, you get that same excitement when you see the photo on the back of your camera.” The passion for photography has taken Teena to many places around the globe, specifically when it comes nature photography. “I was a park ranger one summer, so I particularly like to travel to National Parks for photography,” A few of her nature photographs can be seen above and below to the left. Teena’s courses filled up quickly during the summer session, so she added two additional courses for How to Use your 35mm Camera along with one Nature Photography course. You can check out the fall line-up of courses on page 45. The variety of courses are for everyone, from beginners to intermediate level. “How to Use Your 35mm Camera is for a person who just got a new camera, or had little experience using it,” according to Teena. If you have had some experience taking outdoor photographs, but haven’t mastered composition, lenses, filters and exposure, then Nature Photography is the course for you. Photoshop courses have been added to the fall course list as well, beginning with Introduction to Photoshop. Progressive-level courses follow the intro course where you can learn the ins and outs of the software including tools, drop down menus, palettes and layers. Participants must bring their laptop to the course with Photoshop pre-loaded.

“If you have the desire and you’ve been bitten by the photo bug, do something about it,” says Teena, “I think that if you have the desire to learn something, then you should act on it!”

VISUAL ARTS ABSTRACT PAINTING*

Join this class to have some fun and to learn techniques not normally used in naturalistic painting. You will learn you can distort, exaggerate, omit, multiply, glaze, scrape, and texture in different ways….in abstracts your work does not look like a photo or a scene. You might choose to flatten the entire pictorial space and concentrate on color in a new way, or perhaps distort shapes and use new textures in your composition. For experienced painters this is a chance to challenge yourself and think outside of your comfort zone. Beginning adult artists can see the information you will gain and apply it to your more naturalist paintings. Six week course. Instructor: Michael Farrar. Age
