Dear friends and neighbors, After an extensive strategic survey, Roanoke County recently adopted a new vision statement describing our community as “a vibrant, innovative, and scenic community that values its citizens, heritage, and quality of life.” Our citizens take great pride in the many beautiful parks and open spaces that make this valley such a great place to live. As director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, I take great pride in our responsibility to build and maintain many of the region’s most cherished play places. Over the next few months, big changes are coming to Explore Park. Browse through the pages of this magazine and you’ll learn about new recreation opportunities coming this year such as overnight camping, mountain bike skills features, trail improvements and a tournament quality disc golf course. If you’re visiting the park this season, be aware of ongoing construction as we improve the roads and infrastructure for the development these and future amenities. It’s all part of fulfilling the community’s vision to make Explore Park a destination facility that we can all be proud of. Above all this is a park built for the citizens of Roanoke County, and we hope you’ll be the first to join us for some exciting new adventures. Sincerely,

LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN We’re gearing up for our biggest season of outdoor recreation ever! Explore Park’s adventure plan is underway, with a tremendous amount of development taking place over the next few months. Here are a few of the highlights: Overnight Accommodations - Roanoke County has approved contracts with two vendors to provide tent sites, cabins, yurts, fixed tent sites (glamping) and canopy camping at Explore Park. Don’s Cab-Inns will operate 18 pod cabins and yurts. The cabins will be smaller, one-room retreats, similar to a tiny home, with the option to add larger accommodations in future phases. Blue Mountain Adventures will operate the tent and platform camping at the park, and additionally offer equipment rental such as mountain bikes. Overnight accommodations will be built out over the next several years, with rental opportunities available starting as early as April . See page 44 for more information. Mountain Bike Skills Park – Over the past few years we’ve been collecting feedback from citizens and biking advocates about trail improvement and skills park development at Explore Park. Since January, we’ve been working with local and national design firms to bring the vision to life. Thanks to everyone who came out to our community meetings earlier this year to provide input. We’re only a few weeks away from finalizing plans for the project. Our goal is to be the starting place for individuals and families seeking adventure and enrichment in the outdoors. Plans for the bike area will include an emphasis on beginner and intermediate level skills development. These finished plans are not just going to sit on a shelf! Roanoke County will begin construction on the project this summer, with projected completion by the end of 2018. Disc Golf Course – Roanoke County has been working with local community advocacy groups to construct an 18-hole course near Explore Park. To date volunteers have put in over 400 hours of work on the project. The tournament quality facility will feature three skill level tee boxes and two baskets at each hole. Our unique layout boasts a wide range of topography and elevation changes, as well as spectacular views. Our projected opening date is July, 2018. Aerial Adventure Course – We’re finalizing negotiations to bring a signature attraction to Explore Park through a proposed aerial adventure course. An intent to award has been issued for TreeTop Quest, a designer and operator of aerial obstacle courses in the U.S. and France. Projected to open in spring 2019, TreeTop Quest will feature several challenge levels of obstacles and ziplines to the park, making it a signature attraction on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Programs, Activities & Events – Negotiations are underway with several vendors to provide signature events, holiday festivals, equestrian services and summer camp programs over the next few years. Infrastructure Development – When you visit Explore Park this year, please be aware that construction is ongoing within the park, which may cause some inconveniences to our guests. Improvements include the addition of water/sewer lines to our main building complex, paving and realignment of several roads within the park, development of overnight accommodation facilities, construction of a bathhouse, and possible trail realignments. Thanks for your patience as we work to improve outdoor recreation opportunities in our area.

DOG TRAINING PUPPY KINDERGARTEN

The single most important (and fun) thing you can do for your puppy? Puppy Kindergarten!! For puppies between 10-24 weeks old, socialization with other puppies and people is crucial in order to help them become social, wellbalanced dogs. While making lots of friends during off-leash playtime, your puppy will gain confidence by participating in activities and learning basic commands. Discussions for puppy parents include puppy development, house-training, destructive chewing, and play-biting. Six week course taught by High Hopes Dog Training.

Now that your dog has learned some good manners, the next step is to apply those manners to real life situations while addressing common behavior problems like jumping on guests, door-dashing, pulling on the leash, not coming when called, etc. Behaviors taught include stay, place, leave it, heel, touch tag, and more. Dogs will be taught to respond to both verbal and nonverbal cues. Six week course taught by High Hopes Dog Training. Prerequisite: Graduation from High Hopes Dog Training Beginner Obedience & Good Manners course.

MAKING TIME FOR THE OUTDOORS New Camping Options at Explore Park

When was the last time you took your family on an outdoor adventure? Here in Virginia’s Blue Ridge, we’re blessed with beautiful natural scenery and a varied but hospitable climate for outdoor recreation. Despite these surroundings, however, many of us simply don’t spend as much time outside as we’d like. Why not? It all comes down to the one thing we can’t seem to get enough of… Time! Beginning this spring, Explore Park is making it a whole lot easier to get outside and stay there overnight. We’ve partnered with two local vendors to bring unique accommodations to the park including tents, cabins, yurts and tree houses. Construction is now underway, and booking will begin soon. Here are a few ways these exciting new amenities will save you time and help you have the time of your life in the great outdoors. Travel Time – When you’re planning an overnight or weekend trip with kids, distance matters. Time spent traveling to a campsite means time not relaxing by the campfire. Explore Park is only 15 minutes from downtown Roanoke via the Blue Ridge Parkway, but has all the advantages of a remote wilderness destination. We’ve got river access and 14-miles of trails to explore, with more exciting amenities on the way. Planning Time – Some outdoors enthusiasts love the planning aspect of their adventure, but for others it’s the last thing they want to do. At Explore Park you can have it both ways! Blue Mountain Adventures is a full-service provider of adventure recreation services, specializing in biking, paddling, and hiking excursions. They’ll provide everything you need from the gear and shuttle service, right down to a delicious menu selection delivered straight to your tent. According to co-owner Holly Hart, “It’s all about hassle free fun. When you’re on vacation the last thing you want to do is spend your valuable time trying to rent the bike or line things up. We manage the details. You tell us what you want and we’ll have it all set. All you have to do is focus on the adventure.”

Relaxation Time - Being outside doesn’t always mean action and adventure. Many folks looking for overnight accommodations just want to relax and get away from the bustle of city life. Don’s Cab-Inns is our other camping vendor, planning to focus their efforts on providing rustic yet comfortable locations to enjoy nature. According to co-owner Don Harrison,“We’d like people to come away feeling relaxed and refreshed, having enjoyed nature and comfortable accommodations.” When they open for booking this summer, Don’s cabins and yurts will each offer amenities including heating and air conditioning, electricity, a refrigerator, coffee maker and of course a campfire ring. Adventure Time – Our region has a growing reputation as an outdoor recreation destination, and things are only getting better. Over the next two years, Explore Park is leading the way with the development of several exciting new facilities including a disc golf course, a mountain bike skills park, an aerial adventure course and a packed calendar of new special events. We expect to welcome many visitors from outside our area to take advantage of the new overnight accommodations, but hope that local visitors will make a weekend of it as well. Explore Park is first and foremost and community facility, built by and for the residents of Roanoke County to enjoy. The next time you drive down Interstate 581, take a look around! We’re surrounded by a picturesque ring of mountains and some of the nation’s best wooded areas to explore. Too many of us get so caught up in our busy lives that we don’t make time to appreciate how lucky we are to live in this beautiful place. Making time for your family to enjoy the great outdoors is important for their health and wellbeing. Whether you want to relax, adventure, or get away from it all, Explore Park is building exciting new places to play in the day or overnight. It’s about time!

VENDOR PROFILE – DON’S CAB-INNS Owners: Don and Melody Harrison

VENDOR PROFILE – BLUE MOUNTAIN ADVENTURES Owners: Holly and Jonathan Hart

Their Story:

Their Story:

This Vinton company developed over the past decade from a hobby. Entrepreneur Don Harrison began designing small wooden homes that he could develop into a kit and sell to do-ityourselfers. People quickly fell in love with the unique arch design of these structures, affording more room than a traditional home of the same size due to a cozy loft. Don and his wife Melody discovered early on that prospective buyers often wanted the homes pre-constructed. Due to popular demand, they created a smaller version of the home in the form of a small cabin that could be constructed off-site and transported easily on a trailer. This unique cabin design is similar to the camping pod concept now popular throughout Europe, offering a basic night’s stay with a unique experience and feel of solid wood construction. Combining experience in rental properties with a love of cabin building, the Harrison’s are fulfilling a lifelong dream with this project. “We’re excited to be on the ground floor as one of the first vendors, and able to participate in the planning stages of this exciting project,” says Don. “We can envision a great future for Explore Park and we want to be part of it.”

WHAT’S COMING:

This spring Don’s Cab-Inns will begin work on installing 18 camping units, consisting of both pod cabins and yurts. Each unit will feature heating and air condition, electricity, a refrigerator, fire ring, grill and picnic table. Pod Cabins – These unique and locally constructed pods take advantage of a space saving high-arch floor plan. With a sleeping capacity of up to four, the cabins are approximately 8.5’ by 16’ with a queen bed below and a full bed in the loft. These units will be served by a bathhouse. Yurts – For larger families looking to spend the night, several yurts will be installed capable of sleeping up to six people. These trendy camping structures maximize space through their unique circular shape. Measuring a diameter of 16’ and 20’ these units will each have a private sink, toilet and shower in addition to a pair of bunk beds (twin and full). Booking: Reservations will be available within the next few months through our website www.ExplorePark.org or in person at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center (540) 427-1800.

The Hart family are Roanoke County natives with a passion for the outdoors. In 2012 the family moved out to the San Juan Mountains of Colorado to fulfill their desire for adventure recreation. During this time Jonathan worked with San Juan Huts, managing, maintaining and servicing overnight accommodations for outdoor adventurers. When they returned home to the Virginia’s Blue Ridge in 2015, the Harts were amazed at the way our region had changed. They discovered a newfound excitement for outdoor recreation in our area, and more people taking advantage of the fantastic natural resources available. “Being able to leave gave me a new appreciation knowing this is the place I’m supposed to be,” says Holly.“I want to grow those aspects and making this a place where families want to stay and grow. Capitalizing on what we have but taking care of those treasures through investment and maintenance. We’re excited for our business, but also for the community. For families to get outside and be active, it’s such a mental and physical benefit, and we’re proud to be making it more accessible for all levels from novices to enthusiasts.”

WHAT’S COMING:

Blue Mountain Adventures will be operating several camping types at Explore Park, as well as optional trip planning and equipment rental services. Their motto is “You focus on the adventure, we’ll take care of the details.” The first rental sites will be available as early as April. Approximately 50 campsite units will be constructed over the next two years. Canvas Tents – These 14’x16’ tents will be erected on a custom made wood platform for maximum comfort, with an extending rain fly over the 16’24’ deck to keep the elements off. Each tent sleeps up to four and comes with a queen bed and futon or pull out couch. These sites come with access to a small outdoor camp kitchen that can be stocked with groceries for an extra fee. Canopy Camping – Several elevated platforms with canvas flies will be constructed for a unique “in-the-trees” camping experience. Tipi Tents – Sleep in style while getting more in touch with nature in a roomy tipi tent. Measuring 16’ in diameter, these accommodations will board two adults and a child or two. Each one is on a wooden platform with two cots inside, or use your own sleeping bag. Primitive Camping – Already have your own equipment? Explore Park will be offering rustic camping sites including a site to pitch your tent, grill, picnic table and fire ring. Group Camping – Several camping areas will be set aside for group rental, allowing you to choose between a primitive site for up to 15 people or a drive-up camping experience for up to 20. Picnic tables and fire rings will be at all sites. Booking: Reservations will be available within the next few months through our website www.ExplorePark.org or in person at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center (540) 427-1800. The dictionary definition of

noun

ADVENTURE

ad•ven•ture

\ed-’ven-cher\

“the participation in an exciting experience; often an unusually bold and risky undertaking with an uncertain outcome.” Let’s break that down a little further as it pertains to summer camps: PARTICIPATION – Sometimes the hardest part of the camp experience is taking that first step to sign up. Too often our children are ambivalent when asked what they want to do. That’s because they don’t know what they’ve been missing. If they try it and like it, your child just might find a new passion or lifelong pursuit. EXCITING EXPERIENCE – Summer camp is unquestionably an exciting place. It’s also a place full of unforgettable memories. Creating a positive impression of physical activity and outdoor recreation is proven to change the way your child will spend leisure time as an adult. Healthy habits start young. UNUSUALLY BOLD - At summer camp, children can try new things without the social pressures that go along with activities in a school or athletic environment. Much of this has to do with the mentor rather than teacher relationship they’ll have with their counselors. In many cases, children are willing to challenge themselves at camp in ways they never would at home or in the classroom. The end result is increased self-confidence and independence.

RISKY UNDERTAKING – Any activity contains the possibility of physical risk, and at Roanoke County that’s extremely low due to safety measures, close supervision and guidelines such as those established by the American Camp Association for Camp Roanoke. Your children will perceive their biggest risk as “failure.” The camp environment sets them up to succeed through accomplishing challenges in a supportive network. Perhaps more importantly, it’s also a safe place to “fail” and learn to bounce back from your mistakes. UNCERTAIN OUTCOME – Not all kids enjoy summer camp, and not every camp is for every kid. As the largest provider of summer programs in our area, Roanoke County offers over 175 weeks to choose from, increasing your chances of finding that perfect fit. In the end, whether they love it or wish they were still at home playing video games, you’ll have given them a unique and life-shaping opportunity to go on their own adventure.
