Dear friends and neighbors, The holiday season is upon us, and there’s nothing more important this time of year than spending time with family. We’ve packed the calendar with special events and activities to make those important connections while creating cherished memories. At Explore Park, we hope you’ll bring the family visit our new Holiday Village this December, and get a preview of an even bigger event next year. You might even want to consider staying overnight in one of our new cabins or yurts! Staying active can be difficult during the colder months of the year, which is why we’ve continued to grow and change the lineup of activities available at Green Ridge Recreation Center. Choose from monthly fitness and nutrition workshops, new personal training programs and our popular Lose Big clinics. Finally, we encourage you to try something new this season! Sometimes the best Christmas gifts involve time spent together. These are the opportunities we strive to provide at Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Sincerely,

LOSE BIG SUCCESS STORY Chris Price has been a Green Ridge member for the last year and a half. He began his time at Green Ridge participating in the water group fitness courses, HydroFit and HydroPower. “I’d rate my experience as great!” says Price. “I started out pretty slow with a couple of indoor pool classes.” He discovered Lose Big as he acclimated to the center. “When I started in January, I was not aware of Lose Big.” Chris had a 9.21% weight loss percentage during the summer 2018 Lose Big session. Lose Big has helped Chris find workouts that enhance his individual efforts. While reflecting on his progress with Lose Big, “I was able to get five minutes in on the elliptical at first. Now I’m able to go 20 minutes without stopping.” Lose Big has also helped Chris deal with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP).“I’ve been able to figure out different workouts with my legs, because the legs are the weakest part of my body.” Chris credited his Lose Big trainer, Brittney Arner, as a reason for his successful progress. “I had already worked with Brittney during my time in the indoor pool. She helped me figure out ways to lift and move my legs while working out. That is why I started working out in the pool." Chris was knowledgeable with exercises using a treadmill, elliptical and lifting weights. “What Lose Big showed me was battle ropes, planks and core training.” The program’s schedule and rhythm has kept Chris on track with his progress. “What has kept me motivated is the schedule,” Price says. “The

second reason is being around people, with all of us working together.” “Green Ridge has helped tremendously!” Chris expressed. “When I started out at Green Ridge in January before I started Lose Big, I was 425 pounds.” Chris is now at 293 pounds. “I’m a season ticket holder for Virginia Tech. The reason I started Lose Big is because last year was the first year I needed to park in the handicapped area and take a bus, which was frustrating. I wasn’t able to go experience tailgating and hang out with my friends, which crushed me. This season, I’m at the tailgate and I can walk into the stadium with no issue.” If you are considering Lose Big, take it from Chris. “Just get started. You’ll be surprised at how well you do!” Chris is not the only participant who has found success with Lose Big. The summer 2018 session winner was Jane Lewis who had a weight loss percentage of 9.9%. Chris came in second place with 9.21% weight loss percentage, and Kathy Perdue finished in third with 8.79% weight loss percentage! Congrats to our summer 2018 Lose Big session participants, and fall 2018 stats will be released soon! Check out our updated Lose Big schedule for the winter 2019 session on pg. 15! PERSONAL TRAINER REPRESENTS THE USA adaptive athletes, one pro, and two elite women to Scotland’s Castle Mey Highland Games. Members from Uncle Sam’s Highlanders and the United Kingdom’s Invictus team competed in the first Adaptive Games in Scotland.

It has been two years since he began throwing in the local Green Hill and Radford Highland Games. Chad Clark, local Highland Games athletic director, introduced him to the sport.

“It was absolutely incredible,” Matt exclaims when reflecting on his time at the Adaptive Highland games in August. “I was the first double-amputee to throw on Scottish Soil. I won four of the first five events ever held for the adaptive division in Mey.”

Hall is one of many adaptive Highlanders who competes in Highland Games around the United States. “Our adaptive athletes are not on a separate day, or in a corner of the field,” says Hall. “They’re integrated directly into the Games.”

Of his five events, the caber competition was the best for Matthew as he turned three cabers. “Just throwing in Scotland was awesome. To turn a caber in Scotland was pretty emotional with a thousand-year history of the sport!”

“The whole point for Uncle Sam’s Highlanders was to take adaptive Highland Games to Scotland for the first time.” The group did just that in August, taking four

According to Matt, “Mey Highland Games is usually the small one on the Scottish schedule. The presence of Uncle Sam’s Highlanders had a tremendous impact

When we first checked in with Matthew Hall a few months ago in our Fall Recreation Magazine issue, he was on his way to participate in the Mey Highland Games in Scotland. Matthew Hall is the Head Adaptive Coach and member of Uncle Sam’s Highlanders. He is also a personal trainer at Green Ridge Recreation Center.

TO TURN A CABER IN SCOTLAND WAS PRETTY EMOTIONAL.

This past August, Matthew competed in the Mey Highland Games in Scotland. He served as Head Adaptive Coach and participant for Uncle Sam's Highlanders.

on the Mey Highland Games. “Just by our attendance at the Mey Highland Games, it went from an average attendance of 150 people to well-over 3,000!” “The next day we were on the front page of the BBC website!” Team members were able to meet Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, who served as chieftain of the Mey Highland Games. It was a great experience for Hall and his team. “Everybody involved in the team really contributed to making that trip one that was beyond us having fun and throwing.” Matt is transitioning his focus from Highland Games to Paralympic competition. “We got back from Scotland on a Sunday, and while going to work on Monday I received an email about going to the Olympic Training Center for Paralympic shot put, discus and javelin.” Matt is on track to qualify for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. “Being an Olympian has been a dream of mine since I was kid.” As he is on the path to achieve his dream, Matt is proud to represent the United States in any competition.“It is what I’ve wanted my whole life.” EXPLORE RECREATION MAGAZINE • WINTER 2019
