VISTIOR CENTER OPENS FOR THE SEASON SATURDAY, APRIL 16TH!

EXPLORE PARK UPDATE on the master plan process R

oanoke County is nearing the conclusion of an eight month master plan process that will help shape the community’s vision for Explore Park’s future. We are thankful to the interested residents and stakeholders who participated by sharing ideas through community meetings, focus groups and surveys. This feedback has resulted in a plan that reflects our region’s growing reputation as a destination for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. The completed master plan will serve as a powerful tool to help us achieve this vision over the long term, while serving as a catalyst for economic opportunities in the Roanoke Valley. As final master plan documents become available, they will be posted on our project website www.ExplorePark.org/masterplan. A few components of the plan are as follows: Conceptual Plan – We’ve created a map of developable areas within the park, and placed the tentative future development locations for dozens of recreation amenities. The attractions selected came from a combination of community feedback and nationwide park trends suggested by our consultant.* Here you’ll find concepts such as zip lines, tent and cabin camping, mountain bike features, disc golf and more access to the Roanoke River. Circulation – A key aspect of park design is getting visitors in and around your facility. The master plan includes several phased maps showing the integration of roads, primary trails, secondary trails and parking areas. We’ve also been working with our partners at the National Park Service to set the groundwork for items such as new access points, trail connections including the Roanoke River Greenway, future park signage and year-round access.

Business Plan – The master plan will include phased cost estimates for building and maintaining the proposed amenities, as well as establishing standards for maintenance, personnel, programming and fundraising over the long term. This plan is flexible and will rely heavily on partnerships with the private sector for development and ongoing operation. Environmental Inventory – Working with a nationally known naturalist, we’ve created an inventory of what we call “special places.” Explore Park is blessed with an abundance of unique natural features and relics of the land’s true cultural heritage. We plan to use this information for interpretive environmental programming, preservation of natural resources and to help us tell the story of how the land has been used throughout the years. Explore Park will not be developed overnight. Pending review by the Board of Supervisors, Roanoke County administration hopes to use the master plan as we partner with businesses and community partners to bring the vision to life. This is an exciting time for our community as we work to build a clean, safe, fun and beautiful environment for outdoor recreation. Our goal is to be a source of pride for area residents and a must-see stop along the Blue Ridge Parkway for visitors to our region. *Roanoke County has contracted with design firm Wallace, Roberts & Todd, local engineering firm Balzer & Associates and ProsConsulting to create this “trail map” for the future development of Explore Park.

I love my job and take great pride in helping those I train to maintain and improve their health.” - Brittany Arner “I began my fitness journey in the martial arts 18 years ago. Doubling Down on Kids Fitness G

reen Ridge Recreation Center was founded with the motto, “healthy fun for everyone.” Since opening our doors in January 2010, we’ve helped thousands of area residents stay active through engaging activities, top notch equipment, professional guidance and family fun!

• Team Challenges – Every week they will be challenged to work together for fun games and challenges that target agility, cardio endurance, and strength. They’ll also have the opportunity to take a group exercise program designed just for kids.

We know that adults can usually find something to do at Green Ridge, but what about the kids? Most parents know it can be difficult to pry them away from the iPad or video game console. Athletics leagues and recreation programs are a great way to keep them moving, but when it comes to the fundamentals of physical movement and muscle development, youth programs are hard to come by.

• Great Prizes – Judged by their achievement of individually established goals, participants will be eligible for prizes including a new FitBit© for first place, Splash Valley season pass for second place, and Green Ridge daily admission passes for third place.

According to Green Ridge wellness supervisor Chelsea Arner, “Finding any type of activity for kids outside of physical education in school is difficult. They need to learn the proper form for exercise as well as how to be functional on a daily basis. The best way to accomplish that is through a combination of movement based playtime activities and structured youth challenges.” This spring we’re doubling down on youth fitness at Green Ridge with two exciting options to promote healthy habits. We’ve upgraded our facility to accommodate the growing demand for active youth programming. Activity Room 3.0 is better than ever with new interactive features specifcally designed to get kids moving while they play! Come check it out! Here’s some information about the second option we’re introducing: Youth Fitness Challenge We’re launching a new five week fitness program on March 26, guaranteed to motivate youth ages 8-14 through team challenges and incentives. • Individual Assessments – Kids will be divided into groups by age and given an initial assessment of their current physical abilities. This includes metrics such as running a mile, push-ups within a minute, and holding a plank position.

14

RoanokeCountyParks.com • (540) 772-PLAY (7-5-2-9)

• 5K Race – The program will culminate in a 5K race just for participants to be held on Saturday, April 16 at the Camp Roanoke Open House. Particpants will get a free lunch and a chance to sample some awesome outdoor activties. According to Chelsea Arner, the youth fitness challenge gives the kids an achievable goal and something to look forward to. “I’m excited about this program because we’ll get to know the youth of the community and show them that wellness can be fun. They’ll get to reap the benefits of learning how to exercise properly and see the physical results of their efforts.” Sign up for the youth fitness challenge is available online or at the Green Ridge front desk.

Each and every gymnast in our recreational program receives multitudes of one-on-one attention! This class boosts selfesteem and confidence as each gymnast will soon see their skills improving and bodies toning. We give our gymnasts big goals and encourage them to push themselves to succeed! Although this gymnastics class is not being held in an actual gymnastics facility, we will continue to be extremely goal oriented as we work on balance, tumbling, coordination and more! Our classes are based off of USAG curriculum and mixed in with fun and effective drills. These classes will be training on a multitude of equipment. Our Beginner Program at Green Ridge is an entry level class that introduces the wonderful sport of gymnastics and builds up basic skills so one day we can move to a more advanced class! AGES

Body Enrichment

Exercise at a pace you can handle! Starting in a seated position, Body Enrichment is designed for women and men who want to increase their energy and improve balance and coordination. You will gently stretch and lengthen your muscles while promoting added strength throughout your body. Slow movements help circulation without threatening the heart. The sitting, standing and floor movements work to enhance body function without injury. This all-around fitness class is for the student who wants to get involved in a program that is fun, successful and results oriented. Instructor: Sarah Linkous.

T’ai Chi (T’ai Chi Chuan)

Originally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T’ai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as ‘Meditation in Motion’ because it promotes serenity through gentle movements; connecting the mind, body and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goals are to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the naural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. The Mayo Clinic has reported that the practice of T’ai Chi may reduce anxiety and depression, improve balance, flexibility and muscle strength as well as improve sleep quality. Brambleton Center has a six week program. Green Ridge program is four weeks long. Instructor: Denis Spencer. AGES

Great Beginnings Soccer

Great Beginnings is a five week instructional program targeted to four, five and six year old boys and girls. The program’s goal is to help prepare children for the challenges of organized sports in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition. Each child, along with his or her parents, work together to learn basic motor skills needed to successfully move on to more organized sports in years to come. As the program progresses, and children show improvement, the skill stations are altered so that each child remains challenged. Parents spend quality time together with the their child while learning how to properly teach and support them in youth sports. The program will also help develop the child’s motor and cognitive skills as well as provide wonderful social interaction. AGES

Quick Start Tennis

Quick Start Tennis uses a new format to help children eight and under learn and play the game of tennis. To make it easier for them, a few things have changed. The court size. The racquet sizes. The balls. The scoring system. The height of the nets. The changes really work, because now any child between ages 4 and 8 can start playing tennis almost immediately, even if he or she has never picked up a racquet before. Just like other popular youth sports, QuickStart Tennis stresses the importance of actually playing the game of tennis and getting involved in team competition. This means that even more children will have the opportunity to experience this new format, have fun playing with their friends and develop skills that will become the foundation of their game. AGES

SECRETS TO SAVING everyone should know

Article Provided by Frank Butler CFP, CLU of www.thecollegefundingcoach.org

F

or most families, they are torn between saving for college or saving for retirement. It doesn’t have to be that way! Proper planning to meet both goals is especially relevant these days as college costs continue to rise and we continue to live longer into retirement. Our workshop “Little Known Secrets of Paying for College” will help attendees avoid common mistakes like: • Not applying for financial aid because you “earn too much” • Only applying to “less expensive” public schools • Using pre-paid tuition and 529 Plans incorrectly to fund college • Saving in accounts that will limit eligibility to need based grants and scholarships

26

2. For the part of college that we will have to pay, we must do that as efficiently as possible. Taking advantage of potential tax incentives and tax strategies can provide more cash flow and liquidity to the family during this time. In planning to fund college, cash flow and liquidity are king! And many people don’t realize that just saving for college isn’t enough. You also must know how to use those dollars wisely in a payment strategy so as not to lose valuable tax credits and access to affordable loans. 3. Think holistically! Paying for college doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Now is a great time to look at our retirement strategies to see if adjustments need to be made so that we can still retire on time and live in the lifestyle that we desire.

We have taught this workshop for the last 7 years all across Virginia. While helping many families achieve their dreams of sending their kids to college, we have learned the importance of thinking outside the box.

In the end, by understanding the rules of the game and making wise decisions about where to go to school and how to best pay for it, it can lead to a much more rewarding college experience.

In our practice we recommend a 3 step approach: 1. Understand the financial aid rules and position your finances so that you are eligible for the maximum financial aid. Understand that many private universities and colleges will provide more dollars in grants and scholarships than many public institutions. This can make those higher sticker price colleges more affordable for your family and that higher sticker price institution may be a better fit for your student. The important thing is to be able to choose a school that with be a good marriage of both the academic needs of the student and the financial needs of the family.

Children in Tidal Waves should be comfortable with their face in the water and be independent. This class is designed for a four to five year old who is confident in the water and not a beginner. They will learn arm strokes and kicking with freestyle and back stroke and be introduced to rotary breathing. To pass this class a child must be able to float on their back and stomach independently. Water safety is highly emphasized in this class and discussed at every opportunity. Children will move directly to Level 2 after completion of this course. AGES

Come enjoy swimming with your child as they acquire basic aquatic skills that will encourage their love of the water. This class is the foundation of swimming skills for years to come. While parental participation is required in this class, there will be some time for independent swimming. This time will help your child separate from you and help to discover if they are ready to go to the next level without you. Parents will still be provided with water safety information to keep your entire family safe around aquatic environments. AGES

STOP & SMELL The Wildflowers

P

ssssst… We want to let you in on a secret only known by a handful of wildflower enthusiasts in our area. Roanoke County’s Green Hill Park is one of the best places in the valley to hunt for spring wildflowers. Here’s the catch – they’re not marked on any map! You’ve got to know where to look. Fortunately, Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism has a new biologist on staff who knows all the secret places. Elizabeth D’Imperio has studied wetland habitats at Yellowstone National Park, worked as a researcher and scientist as a graduate student in Montana, and managed invasive plant ecology for the Washington, DC park service. She’s optimistic that our April 10th wildflower hike will yield some happy surprises. “Green Hill Park has so many beautiful native species of wildflowers that bloom between the time the snow melts and the trees finish growing their leaves,” says Elizabeth. “Spring ephemerals are an incredibly interesting part of the ecosystem as some of the earliest bloomers. They’re an important food source for pollinators early in the season when there are not a lot of other resources available. A lot of people walk right past them and don’t notice them because they’re only here for such a short time.” Since each wildflower only has a short growth window, it’s hard to say for certain which species we’ll be able to spot on the hike. A few native flowers that are commonly seen at Green Hill Park include Trilium, Iris, Twinleaf, Bloodroot, Spring Beauties and Hepatica. We’ll explore the crag climb, meadow trail and pawpaw trail looking for secret natural flowerbeds, while spotting butterflies and insects along the way taking advantage of those cool spring mornings.

EXPLORE

The wildflower program is part of a new series of guided nature hikes that are geared towards the novice and open to all ages. We welcome anyone with an interest in flowers or native plants, photographers looking for interesting natural subjects, or families who just want to take a nice walk. Bring a camera and a field guide if you have one!

Look and find what others are missing at one of our most popular parks. Join staff on a grand Wildflower exploration! Left: Crested Iris - Wildflower

With all our hikes, Elizabeth aims to explore the interconnectivity between different pieces of our ecosystem. “If you get out in nature and see it, and appreciate it, you gain a greater ownership and sense to want to protect it. The more knowledge you have, the more you realize you’re a part of it.”

Old Salem and Tannenberg Organ

Located in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Old Salem is one of the most authentic living history attractions in the United States. Founded in 1766 by a group of Moravian missionaries the town’s restored and reconstructed buildings present visitors with a view of Moravian life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Your self guided walking tour includes several historic structures staffed by costumed interpreters which include skilled blacksmiths, cobblers, gunsmiths, bakers and carpenters, actually practicing their trades while interacting with visitors. Approximately 70% of the buildings in the historic district are original, making this a truly unique living history museum. Also, a special highlight of the day is a visit to the 1800’s Tannenberg Organ. This is the largest organ in existence built by Moravian builder David Tannenberg and your experience includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the hand pumped bellows, and a performance by a professional organist. The historic district covers approximately seven blocks and the sidewalks in some areas are uneven. Please wear comfortable shoes. Lunch is at the Old Salem Tavern.
