Club History Auckland’shillsandshoreswraparoundthesparklingWaitemataHarbour,makingitanaturalvenueforboatingofall types Thefoundationsofthecityasweknowittodaywerelaidin1840andtheoccasionwasimmediatelymarked byaregatta.Itwasanappropriateportentofthingstocomeasyachtingandboatingflourishedandultimatelygrew toenjoyaninternationalreputation TheRoyalNewZealandYachtSquadrontracesitsoriginbacktothe1871 incarnationoftheAucklandYachtClub,whichbeganwith30yachtsand120membersonitsregister.Bythen,the cityhadgrownintoamuchmoresubstantialandthrivingenterprise,withtheharbourplayingacentralroleinits progress
Bytheturnofthecentury,yachtracingwasaflourishingsport,attractingcrowdsofspectators,keenpuntersand detailedreportsofintensesportingrivalriesinthelocalnewspapers.Undertheleadershipofsomeofthecity’s prominentcaptainsofindustryandcommerce,theAYCshowedcontinuedgrowth Atremendousrivalrybetween theLoganandBaileyboatbuildingfamiliesspurredthegrowthofanoutstandingfleetofracingyachts,mostof whichjoinedtheAYCfleet In1901,theAYCchangeditsnametotheNewZealandYachtSquadron Thefollowing yeartheSquadroncelebratedamajormilestonewhenitreceivedawarrantinthenameofKingEdwardVII,elevating itsstatustoaRoyalclub.Withthisrecognitionmembershipnumbersalmostdoubledfrom157in1901to300in 1903
DuringbothWorldWars,yachtracingwaslargelysuspendedinAuckland MembersoftheRNZYSservedinall theatresofbothwarsandinallthearmedservices,whilethosewhowerenotabletoserveabroadwereinvolvedin harbourdefenceandpatrolduties Toaccommodatesteadygrowth,theRoyalNewZealandYachtSquadronmoved throughasuccessionofrentedpremisesinthecityuntilin1955itboughtahandsometwo-storeybrickhousein ParliamentStreetwithsweepingviewsovertheWaitemataHarbour.Adecadelater,theRNZYSleasedanexisting building,whichhadlongaccommodatedthepopularTrillo’scabaretanddancehallatWesthaven Westhavenhad beenearmarkedfortheestablishmentofamajorcitymarinaandtheestablishmentofafootholdtherewasa strategicmoveforthefuture Fornearlyadecade,theRNZYSretaineditsParliamentStreetheadquartersinthecity butin1975itwasdecidedtomovepermanentlytotheWesthavensite.
Fromthe1960s,theRNZYSwasattheforefrontofasteadyriseininternationalcompetition.In1966,JamesDavern sailedhisyachtFidelisacrosstheTasmanSeaandswepttolinehonoursvictoryinthegruelling630mileSydneyHobartRace Fidelissetanewracerecordandthe17-hourmarginbetween1stand2ndstoodformanyyearsasthe longestintherace’shistory.Threeyearslater,ChrisBouzaidandanRNZYScrewaboardRainbowIItookontheelite ofinternationalyachtracing,winningtheprestigiousOneTonCupinHeligoland,Germanyagainstaline-upof seasonedcompetitorsfromtheUSA,Germany,Italy,Belgium,Sweden,HollandandSwitzerland.Onthefoundations laidbythesesuccesses,theRNZYStrophycabinetshaveplayedhosttosomeofthebiggestprizesinworld yachtingincludingtheHalf,OneandTwo-TonCups,theAdmiral’sCup,theKenwoodCup,theChampagneMumm WorldCup,theWhitbreadRoundtheWorldTrophy,theLouisVuittonCupandtheAmerica’sCup
CarryingtheRNZYSburgeeintobattle,TeamNewZealandwontheAmerica’sCupinSanDiegoin1995,then successfullydefendeditontheHaurakiGulfin2000 Bothmatchesweredecisivelysettledwith5-0victories
AfterlosingtoSwitzerlandin2003,theRNZYSbecametheonlyyachtclubintheworldtochallengeandwinthe America’sCuptwicewhenEmiratesTeamNewZealandscoreda7-1victoryoverOracleTeamUSAinBermudain 2017 InbothinterveningCupregattas–atValenciain2007andSanFranciscoin2013–EmiratesTeamNew ZealandwontheLouisVuittonChallengerseriesbutfellshortintheAmerica’sCupMatches
OnthebackofthesuccessinBermuda,however,theAmerica’sCupreturnedtoAucklandtotakeupresidencein theRoyalNewZealandYachtSquadrononcemore.
CoincidingwiththeRoyalNewZealandYachtSquadron’s150thsesquicentenaryin2021,EmiratesTeamNew Zealandsuccessfullydefendedthe36thAmerica’sCupinAuckland,defeatingLunaRossaPradaPirelli7-3 The Defenceofthe37thAmericasCuptookplaceinBarcelona,Spain.WhereEmiratesTeamNewZealand,successfully defendedtheAmerica’sCup,defeatingINEOSBritannia7-2,confirmingforthethirdtimeinarowtheRoyalNew ZealandYachtSquadronistheHomeoftheAmerica’sCup
In2024,GillianWilliamswasnamedthefirstfemaleCommodoreoftheRoyalNewZealandYachtSquadron,a landmarkmilestoneintheClubs’153-yearhistory.

Composition:TheGeneralCommitteeconsistsoftheCommodore,theViceCommodore,theRearCommodore anduptosixotherpersonselectedattheAGM.AtleasttwooftheFlagOfficersandatleastthreeoftheGeneral CommitteeshallbeYachtownersAllGeneralCommitteemembersmustbeMembers

Beforeconsideringamotionforremoval,theGeneralCommitteeMemberaffectedbythemotionmustbe given:
(i)noticethataGeneralCommitteemeetingistobeheldtodiscussthemotiontoremovetheGeneral CommitteeMember;and
(ii)adequatetimetopreparearesponse;and

GeneralCommitteeinvolvement:TheGeneralManager,SecretaryandTreasurermayattendGeneralCommittee meetingswhenrequiredbytheGeneralCommitteebuthavenovotingrights
12. Finances Controlandmanagementoffinances:ThefundsandpropertyoftheSquadronarecontrolled,investedand disposedofbytheGeneralCommittee,subjecttothisConstitutionanddevotedsolelytothepromotionofthe purposesoftheSquadronsetoutinRule3.
Property:TheGeneralCommitteemaywithorwithoutthesanctionofaGeneralMeetingexpendmoniesin pursuanceoftheSquadron’spurposesandpowers,makedonationstoanyperson,bodyofpersonsorinstitution, investthefundsoftheSquadron,entersuchcontractstopurchaseorotherwiseacquireortosell,leaseor otherwisedisposeofordealwithanyinterestinanyrealorpersonalpropertyortoborrowmoneywithorwithout security(savethattheGeneralCommitteeshallnotinanyfinancialyearborrowmorethanthetotaloftheprevious financialyear’ssubscriptionswithoutthesanctionofaGeneralMeeting)uponsuchtermsandconditionsasit thinksfit,providedthatallrealandpersonalpropertyoftheSquadronshallbevestedintheTrusteeswhoshall holdthesameupontrustfortheSquadronandsubjecttothedirectioninwritingofamajorityoftheGeneral CommitteeatadulyheldmeetingthereofandsignedbytheChairmanofsuchmeetingSuchdirectionsshallbe obligatoryupontheTrusteesandshallvalidateanythingdoneorpurportedtobedonebytheminpursuanceof suchdirectionandnopersonshallbeconcernedtoenquireastotheregularityofsuchdirectionbeyondthe verificationofthesignatureoftheChairman

WithoutlimitingthemannerinwhichtheMember,Officer,orSquadronmaybegiventherighttobeheard, theymustbetakentohavebeengiventherightif
(i)theyhaveareasonableopportunitytobeheardinwritingoratanoralhearing(ifoneisheld);and (ii)anoralhearingisheldifthedecisionmakerconsidersthatanoralhearingisneededtoensurean adequatehearing;and

Code of Conduct 1. PURPOSE ThepurposeoftheRoyalNewZealandYachtSquadron(theSquadron)istogenerallyencourageand pursueCorinthianyachting.
TofulfilthepurposeoftheSquadronitdeliversworldclasssailingtoitsmembers,providesthehighest qualityofservicesandfacilitiesandatthesametimefostersasenseofcommunityandprovidesvalue thatmakesmembershipoftheSquadronalifelongexperience.
ItfollowsthatmembershipoftheSquadronisaprivilegeWiththatprivilegeisthecorresponding obligationandexpectationthatthehigheststandardsofbehaviorwillbefollowedbymembers,their guestsandotherusersoftheSquadron.

Byparticipatinginthiseventeachcompetitoragreesandacknowledgesthatsailingisapotentiallydangerous activitywithinherentrisks.Theserisksincludestrongwindsandroughseas,suddenchangesinweather,failure ofequipment,boathandlingerrors,poorseamanshipbyotherboats,lossofbalanceonanunstableplatformand fatigueresultinginincreasedriskofinjuryInherentinthesportofsailingistheriskofpermanent,catastrophic injuryordeathbydrowning,trauma,hypothermiaorothercauses.
AllthosetakingpartinRNZYSracesoranyothersailingeventscontrolledbytheRNZYS,asbetweentheRNZYS andeachofthosesotakingpart,dosoattheirownriskandresponsibilityTheRNZYSandanysponsor associatedwiththiseventhasnoliabilityforanydamage,lossoranypenaltysufferedbyanyboatcreworany otherpersontakingpartinsucheventsTheRNZYSandanysponsorassociatedwiththiseventshallnotbe responsiblefortheseaworthinessofaboatwhoseentryisacceptedand/orthesufficiencyand/oradequacyof itsequipmentorthecompetenceofitsskipperorcrew.TheRNZYSreservestherightinitssoleanduncontrolled discretiontorefuseentry. 20.
