OUR MISSION: To provide a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children

A Note from our BOARD CHAIR

Have you heard, we’re building a new House with 72 rooms in St. Louis City? We are thinking of installing a floor-to-ceiling bird cage in the lobby, stocked with finches, to entertain the families.

Okay, maybe not. But did you know that is what Dr. Audrey Evans, co-founder of the first Ronald McDonald House, did in the pediatric oncology ward where she practiced medicine in the early 1970s? It was a creative solution to entertain the families while they endured painful news and treatment for their children.

Dr. Evans died last September, and from what I have read, she was not only creative, she was generous and personable as well. She knew that a sick child is a sick family, and watching families sleep in hospital hallways and on treatment room floors was unacceptable. She found a way to connect with local McDonald’s owners/operators and the father of a sick child - who happened to be the tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles. Together, they used the profits from Shamrock Shake sales to purchase the first House in 1974. They finally had an economical and comfortable way for the families to stay close to the hospital and their loved ones.

We have similarly creative, generous and personable staff at our current Ronald McDonald Houses in St. Louis. I know because that is how I happened to find my way to serve as Chair of the Ronald McDonald House Board. Like many of you, and like the families who stay at our Houses, I was introduced to the great work of the organization during a difficult time. In 2014, while my seven and nine year old children and I were grieving the sudden death of their dad, we fortuitously selected the Ronald McDonald House Charities for donations “in lieu of flowers” at the funeral. While the collection was small and should not have drawn any attention, in a uniquely creative, generous and personable way, the folks at the Ronald McDonald House sought to meet the person behind the donation, and invited me in.

At the Ronald McDonald House, you quickly learn to direct energy to helping others, just as the 31 incredible staff members and 26 volunteer Board members do every day. My now thriving teenagers have both volunteered at RMHC events – serving

hamburgers with the Bunge team at Tab Top Pandemonium, organizing the storage shed at the Park Avenue House, and completing an Eagle Scout poster project to free up space at the West Pine House. I was married in 2021, and my husband, Iain, and his grown kids enjoy contributing to the golf tournaments and the Red Shoe Society’s professional development events. I think they all enjoy watching me wear my red shoes to show my support. Ronald McDonald House Charities continues to keep families close. It has for me, and I presume it has for you as well.

As we build this new House, we obviously need a lot of money. We continue to operate our other three Houses as well. Thank goodness for your donations to further our mission and to our McDonald’s Owner/Operator partners, who have championed “Round-Up” in their stores - raising millions of dollars for our operating funds. That money has freed up other donations and cash for the Capital Campaign to build the new House. This funding also allowed us to renovate the original and open an additional Family Room at Mercy Hospital just this past year - bringing our total to four in the St. Louis-area!

Today, there are 383 of these wonderful Houses that love built around the world. As we get to work, staying creative, generous and personable, our new House in St. Louis City might be number 384! The number does not really matter; what matters is that our new House will surround more families with more love.

On December 2, 2022, we broke ground on the new Ronald McDonald House! As the need for this space continues to grow, we look forward to our charity’s beautiful expansion. The new House will have 72 bedrooms, large dining areas, an industrial kitchen and chef, a rooftop patio, private bathrooms, laundry facilities, and more (see renderings of the House at the bottom of page 4).

So far, over $29 million has been secured for the campaign through the support of our generous community. We are so grateful for the

generosity of the individuals, corporations, and foundations that have stepped up to support guest families.

“The journey to breaking ground at the new site was not easy. The fundraising team had to cease efforts during the global pandemic and economic downturn. Despite these challenges, our supporters continue to provide a future for this organization,” says Mike DeCola, Capital Campaign Co-Chair.

The new location will be equidistant from St. Louis Children’s Hospital and SSM Health

Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital while adjacent to Shriners Hospital for Children – St. Louis. This will continue to keep families close to the local pediatric facilities to access their child’s care.

We are proud to share that hospital administrative and clinical leaders say that their affiliation with RMHC enhances their ability to provide family-centered care and even improves the quality of that care.

“Rest. This is one of the ‘prescriptions’ we give parents while their child is hospitalized. Without it, they aren’t as effective in advocating for and participating in their child’s care, which is so important to their health and healing. Ronald McDonald House makes it possible for families

to be close by and well-rested,” says Dr. Alexis Elward, Pediatric Infectious Disease Physician and Chief Medical Officer at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. You can help hundreds of more families find rest by donating to the campaign. Let’s Make Room for our future. Donate now at www.rmhcstl.com/new.

THE GIARLA FAMILY

Families helping families. It’s what RMHC is all about.

On December 2, 2022, local McDonald’s owner/operator and Vice Chair of the RMHC St. Louis Board, Chris Giarla, stood, with a shovel in hand, ready to break ground on the new Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis City. He was 1 of 14 community leaders to help mark the historic event. Chris realized after the ceremony that 20 years earlier, his dad had attended a Groundbreaking event for the same charity.

“I vaguely remembered seeing the RMHC shovel before,” said Chris. “Dad reminded me that he attended the Groundbreaking of the long-term apartments at the West Pine location in April 2002 and kept his shovel in the office. It was a humbling experience for our family to be involved in both celebrations.”

The Giarla family has supported Ronald McDonald House Charities for decades. Before moving to the bi-state region, Dave and Andrea Giarla raised their family in Rhode Island, where Dave worked for McDonald’s Corporation. In 1994, Dave’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to move to St. Louis and purchase his first restaurant. The family quickly learned the fulfilling relationship between the McDonald’s Co-op of Metro St. Louis and Ronald McDonald

House Charities.

“From the ‘get-go,’ we had a connection to RMHC. I can’t imagine not being involved in this charity,” says Chris, looking over his wall of early family photos, awards, and McDonald’s and RMHC memorabilia in the main office of his franchise, Christian Foods, which now owns and operates 13 McDonald’s locations in the metro area.

Chris has followed his parents’ lead by supporting The House that Love Built, from the Scramble for Charity Golf Tournament, sponsored by McDonald’s, to serving on the Board of Directors and volunteering to serve families in the Family Room. Additionally, Christian Foods participates in the community giving program, Round-Up for RMHC to raise funding to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. Their franchise, along with the other stores in the McDonald’s Co-op of Metro St. Louis, raised over $2.3 million in 2022 –that’s more than any other Co-op in the nation! Christian Foods restaurants alone have raised over $1 million since the Round-Up for RMHC program began in 2019. A point of pride for Chris and Dave.

“When you get involved, there is something

5 Heartbeat • Spring/Summer 2023

special about having a purpose beyond yourself,” says Chris. “I have such a busy job. Supporting the Family Room program is three hours of my day stepping out of my role. It’s completely different from what I do in the office or restaurant. I love checking in on the families, listening to parents, and having the chance to help the kids out. Having compassion and empathy for someone you don’t know or may not see again is good for the soul. It’s gratifying to know I helped make their day better.”

Passion for the community and the Golden Arches runs in the family. This spring, Chris’s son Christian will be participating in management training through Christian Foods as a sophomore in college.

“He called my dad and shared that he plans to come back after graduating college and work towards running the company someday,” says Chris. “Christian has been with us for five years and moved from a crew member to a manager trainee. The idea that Christian Foods could someday span to a third generation is gratifying for both dad and me.”

At Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, we are beyond grateful to call Dave, Chris, the Giarla family, and everyone at Christian Foods our friends of the House.

“It’s all so humbling; dad and I started this journey together 29 years ago,” says Chris. “I can’t wait to hang both shovels up in the office next to one another. We are so proud to give back to this organization together.”

A PLACE OF REST

The new and renovated Ronald McDonald Family Rooms inside Mercy Hospital will provide comfort and care to thousands of families.

On March 9, 2023, Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis hosted a Family Room Open House at Mercy Hospital St. Louis to showcase the new and renovated Family Rooms.

The original St. Louis-area Family Room opened inside Mercy Hospital in 2005. In 2010, it was relocated to the new pediatric tower at Mercy Children’s Hospital. After 12 years of serving families on the 3rd floor, this space was refreshed thanks to the donations from the community through the Round-Up for RMHC program at McDonald’s.

During the renovation of the 3rd floor space, Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis also worked on a new space within the hospital walls and opened the new Family Room on

the 2nd floor. This area is curated to serve those with children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The fourth St. Louis-area Ronald McDonald Family Room was made possible by donations from the NICUPs or NICU Parents, a group of parents with babies receiving care in the hospital.

Both spaces include updated furniture, a kitchen, dining areas, “quiet nooks” with comfortable seating, laundry facilities, showers, computer stations and more.

We are beyond grateful to continue to provide a home-away-from-home to families steps away from their children’s bedside. These two Family Rooms will allow even more families to stay close when it matters most.

The NEW Ronald McDonald Family Room on the 2nd floor offers a space specialized for families with babies in the NICU

SUPPORT OUR FAMILY ROOMS

We rely on our community to keep all four of our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms well-stocked with all the comforts of home for guests. There is a need for pre-packaged and individually wrapped snacks, travel-sized toiletries and high efficiency laundry pods. Learn more at rmhcstl.com/wishlist.

MEET THE GEEN FAMILY

Ollie’s parents found comfort in the Ronald McDonald Family Room.

On October 25, 2021, Jennifer and Brian Geen heard the devastating news that two-year-old Ollie was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma, a rare form of liver cancer that affects about 1 in 1 million children. When scans from an Urgent Care visit were irregular, Ollie was taken to the Emergency Room, leading the family to the oncology department at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. He was immediately admitted and prepped for a three-hour exploratory surgery the next day. His medical team found a six-inch tumor in a position where it may not be able to be removed.

On November 2, a week after his diagnosis, little Ollie began his first round of in-patient chemotherapy. Within the next few months, the Geen family spent many nights within hospital walls as Ollie underwent his first twelve weeks of treatment. Jennifer and Brian couldn’t imagine leaving their son’s side during the whirlwind of the experience, even with their home only 15 minutes away in Sunset Hills, Missouri.

Thankfully, the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside the hospital provided comfort and care when they needed it most.

“It was a place to decompress,” explains

Jennifer. “The Family Room was the only quiet space we could find from the loud machines, noises, and distractions. We found both mental and physical comfort in the space.”

By February 7, 2022, Ollie was cleared for surgery to remove the tumor. The Geen family went to St. Louis Children’s Hospital for specialty care. Jennifer and Brian anxiously waited for news as Ollie underwent the high-risk sevenhour surgery.

“It was the most difficult day of our lives. We started wandering the halls and found the Ronald McDonald Family Room; it felt nice to have a familiar place,” says Jennifer. “We were grateful to have the space to gather ourselves during that emotional and stressful day inside the hospital.”

The tumor had shrunk to nearly half the original size from his treatment and was successfully removed. Jennifer and Brian were elated when the doctors shared the update after surgery.

Ollie continued six more weeks of chemotherapy. Which meant more inpatient treatment for Ollie and more stops in the Family Room for Jennifer and Brian. Throughout the weeks of his care, Ollie’s parents used the space

13 Heartbeat • Spring/Summer 2023
Ollie’s parents were only steps away during his treatment in St. Louis

whenever they needed to jump on a work call, follow up on emails, grab extra coffee or take a break emotionally from the situation.

On March 29, 2022, Ollie received his final chemotherapy treatment, and the Geen family celebrated by ringing the bell at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital together after 156 days of treatment. Shortly after, scans confirmed that three-year-old Ollie was in remission.

“If not for the support of the Ronald McDonald Family Room, the whole situation would have been even more difficult. We are so grateful to be able to use these support services,” says Jennifer. “The small things, like routine, can make such a difference. We had been supporters of RMHC but didn’t realize the impact it would have on our family.”

Jennifer and Brian have continued to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis annually. Jennifer is a Senior Account Manager at Trane, while Brian serves as a Vice President of Relationship Management at Enterprise Bank – a company that has supported the charity throughout the years and values the work in the community.

Now, Ollie is four years old and continues to be in remission. His parents say he is an “avid playground enthusiast” who loves his weekly swim and soccer lessons and has enjoyed his time back in preschool.

“It’s remarkable how resilient he truly is,” says Jennifer. “We are so proud of his strength and continue to value the time we have together as a family.” ■

OUR FRIENDS. OUR PARTNERS. OUR FOUNDATION.

Wewould like to thank our 2022 Cornerstone Society members for their generosity! Last year, Cornerstone Society members’ donations totaled more than $2 million.

The Cornerstone Society was established in 2012 to recognize the individuals, organizations and corporations that give an unrestricted donation of $1,000 or more to RMHC St. Louis. In 11 years since its inception, Cornerstone Society members have donated nearly $19 million to provide a home-away-from-home to seriously ill children and their families. We are proud to share that the society has grown from 339 to more than 540 members.

On February 23, 2023, we hosted a Cornerstone Society Celebration, presented by Mercy Hospital, at the Westborough Country Club to honor our 2022 donors. A short program recognized Kids & Clays Foundation, Enterprise Holdings, and Tony Irace with awards for their outstanding commitment to RMHC. We would also like to thank our sponsors for underwriting this event.

HEARTWARMING MOMENTS

We were thrilled to share these special moments with our guest families

After 135 days!

The Okpara family stayed at the West County House for over four months during their stay in St. Louis. This family made the House feel like home for the other families.

Twinning!

The Poore family stayed at the Park Avenue House for three months while little Jameson and Elliot were growing stronger in the NICU.

Frankie time!

Brody has made quite the bond with resident therapy dog

Frankie at the West County House during his stay. As Chief Pawsitivity Officer, Frankie works hard to offer comfort and care to her friends.

Mazie is going home!

After 98 days at the Park Avenue Ronald McDonald House

Breanna and Glenn are heading home with little Mazie.

We are so glad we could support them during their stay in St. Louis.

19 Heartbeat • Spring/Summer 2023
The following donors have contributed $1,000 or more to the Let’s Make Room Capital Campaign between January 1, 2019, and February 15, 2023.

HUNTER GIVES BACK

In 2021, 16-year-old Hunter Hildebrand was diagnosed with Pectus Carinatum, a lifethreatening condition that reduces lung capacity and makes breathing difficult. The Quincy, Illinois, native traveled to St. Louis for specialized treatment and underwent multiple cardiothoracic surgeries that broke his sternum and ribs to reconstruct his chest.

“It was scary,” says Hunter. “You never knew what was going to happen.”

The Ronald McDonald House was a place that Hunter and his family could call a home-awayfrom-home.

Thanks to a partnership between Project 55 Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, Hunter was surprised with a Colton Parayko Game Day Experience. As an avid Blues fan, Hunter was excited to receive the news and couldn’t wait to watch his favorite team! He met Colton, rode on the Zamboni, sat in the penalty box, and even received a signed hockey stick. It was an incredible night for the young man.

Inspired by the generosity of RMHC St. Louis and Project 55, Hunter started a collection of wish list items to help other families in need.

On August 29, 2022, Hunter and his family stopped at the Park Avenue House to surprise the team with almost 3,000 wish list items in honor of his 17th birthday. As his family and RMHC staff began carrying in the carloads of boxes into the lobby, the House started filling up with Amazon boxes, tote bags, and even buckets - holding essential cleaning supplies, nonperishable food, and other items that keep Ronald McDonald House running smoothly. That evening, Hunter shared his story at the 1st Annual Project 55 Foundation Golf Tournament and surprised Colton Parayko with a $1,000 donation. His generosity didn’t end there. During the holidays, Hunter created a fun “Hunter’s Holiday Give Back” for guest families and invited St. Louis Mascots Louie and Fredbird to help celebrate. Colton even stopped in for a fun evening.

As the Hildebrand family continues to travel to St. Louis for medical care, they have stayed at the Park Avenue House and refilled a small chest that sits upstairs in the community dining room with treats and activities. We are beyond grateful to see this young man continue “paying it forward” to those who need it most. ■

2022 HEART & SOLE AWARD

In December 2022, former Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis Board Chair Steve Hays presented the Heart & Sole Award to Bob and Clarice Manges for their exemplary support.

“Bob and Clarice have served on the Family Services Committee for 25 years. Bob served two different terms on the board of directors. The Manges family has provided Thanksgiving dinner for families every year since the House opened 41 years ago. They also volunteer every other week in the Mercy Family Room,” says Steve.

He went on to explain that Bob and Clarice have positively impacted the lives of countless families through their support of opening the St. Louis Chapter, volunteering in the Houses, Family Rooms, and at special events.

“There is no other couple that provides more Heart & Sole to the Ronald McDonald House,” says Steve.

The Heart & Sole Award was created in 2005 to honor Coldwell Banker Realty – Gundaker agents, managers, and executives for their 30year commitment to our organization. Each year since then, RMHC St. Louis celebrates a different supporter or group who exemplifies Coldwell Banker Realty-Gundaker’s support.

MEET PAUL JACOBY

Volunteer Paul supports guest families however he can.

Paul Jacoby has volunteered with Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis for two years. He is passionate about helping others and working with children.

“I think it comes from me being one of the oldest in my large family, and I would help with the kids, and then going into the education field for a career, I felt responsible for helping nudge kids into the right direction,” Paul said.

Paul’s acts of service started years ago when his late wife Sandy introduced him to giving back to his community by volunteering. Paul and Sandy were teachers at Marquette High School, and every year her students would gather donations for Ronald McDonald House.

“One of her classes focused on community service, and they were heavily involved with the Ronald McDonald House. After she passed away from a rare form of cancer, the senior class of Marquette raised money to donate to RMHC St. Louis in her memory. As a way to honor her memory, I decided to get involved with the charity.”

While volunteering for RMHC, Paul was filled with joy to witness the legacy his late wife Sandy left in the community.

“I introduced myself to Dan, the President, and he remembered Sandy’s class volunteering and the seniors donating money,” says Paul. “This was back in 2004, so it made my heart feel good that

her legacy was still around, and people would remember her.”

Now Paul is happily remarried and retired from his career in education. He volunteers for the House on Thursdays in various ways in his free time. He delivers Crumble Cookies to all three Houses, and he drives the RMHC box truck with Gary Deeken to transport supplies and collect interoffice mail.

“I enjoy volunteering on a regular schedule; I’m much better having a day a week when I know I am going to do something,” Paul said.

He also serves as the liaison for the Flyfishers at the Crossing, who are a Missouri Men’s FlyFishing Fellowship Group that is dedicated to the art of fly fishing and building friendships. The group prepares meals for guest families four times a year at the West County Ronald McDonald House.

“We’ve been preparing the same meal for the last year, and it’s been homemade meatloaf, mash potatoes and gravy, green beans, hot rolls, and chocolate chip cookies,” says Paul. “The group has over 200 men, so I invite different guys to do it every time.”

Through these volunteering experiences, Paul has created unforgettable and impactful relationships with staff, volunteers, and guest families. He met a father named Ricardo, and his daughter Layla, staying at the West County

House in 2021, whom would later become a special part of his life.

“They were always eating breakfast when I would get there with the cookies, so I started saying, ‘Hey, would you like one of these,’ and I ended up getting coffee and sitting down. Now I arrive early so that I can spend time with them every week.” Paul said, sharing that they look forward to seeing each other every Thursday for breakfast.

Ricardo and Layla are in St. Louis for surgery and physical therapy. The father-daughter duo left their family and everything they owned back in the Dominican Republic to travel to Shriner’s Hospital for Children for Layla to receive treatment. They have called Ronald McDonald House their home since November 2021. After building a friendship, Paul was inspired to go the extra mile for this family.

“One day, Ricardo told me she was going to therapy and asked if I could drive them every once and awhile, and I told him I would love toespecially being a former P.E. Teacher,” Paul said.

“I loved going in to see what they were doing and getting involved; that was another connection.”

After spending time with the family, Paul started making monthly field trips to show them around the community.

“Layla loves dogs, so we went to Purina Farms; my love for history took us to the Arch Museum, and her extraordinary drawing talents took us to the Art Museum. I wanted them to have a Christmas experience by driving through the lights out at Jellystone Park. Layla told me she had never seen them back home” Paul said. “On a personal level, I have been blessed to join Layla and her father, Ricardo, on their journey here at the Ronald McDonald House.”

Paul shared that he wishes more people would take a ‘leap of faith’ and start volunteering.

“One good deed is better than a thousand good intentions. You are better off just jumping in and doing something.” Paul said. “Everyone has gifts, and there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer at The House that Love Built.” ■

When you order from McDonald’s and Round-Up your order to the nearest dollar for RMHC, you’ll leave with more than a meal. You’ll leave knowing you helped provide a home-away-from-home to families caring for their children. Now you can Round-Up in the drive-thru, at the kiosk, at the counter and in the app. Thank You!
