OUR MISSION: To provide a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children

Singularly focused. The folks who work for the Ronald McDonald House Charities are just that. I have observed it, and it is real. They are singularly focused on supporting the families staying in our Houses or Family Rooms while a child or children are undergoing treatment at a St. Louis-area hospital. They do so with the specific goal that, in turn, the families can stay singularly focused on the medical care their loved one is receiving.

This year, 2024, it is going to be hard for anyone connected to the St. Louis-based Ronald McDonald House Charities to stay singularly focused. We have so much to do and so much to celebrate right now!

The number one priority behind supporting the families we serve is opening our new 72-bedroom House in the Grove neighborhood. As you know, we are targeting June. Right behind that is finishing the capital campaign to pay for it (under $1M left to solicit) and finding fruitful uses for our longbeloved Park Avenue and West Pine locations. If these activities were not enough, we are in the midst of planning a new chapter in leadership here in St. Louis, and we are celebrating the 50th

Anniversary of the global organization. With all of this in store, I am singularly focused on my optimism for the future of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. Of all my experiences as an attorney for over two decades and serving in the military for seven years, the efficiency with which this St. Louis charity runs and the service-minded

The Grove Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis City.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis is expanding to a new location in the Grove! This 72-bedroom Ronald McDonald House is nearing completion. As our construction partners are finishing the inside, our team plans to move in the summer of 2024. This location will offer new amenities to guest families, like a yoga room, salon, serenity spaces, and a two-story playroom. It will also include private bedroom suites, a business office, a commercial kitchen with a chef-led culinary program, and an immunesuppressed wing with a separate entrance and

kitchen. Other notable spaces are the St. Louis Cardinal’s Family Area and the St. Louis Blues Game Room. Both are outfitted with our favorite sports teams’ colors and memorabilia.

As we move to the Grove Ronald McDonald House in the coming months, we are doing everything possible to honor the two locations that will be retired. In the new Board Room, a beautiful timeline will showcase the growth of our organization with highlights of the West Pine House, Park Avenue House, and long-term apartment facilities. We will also have a replica

of the loved West Pine front door with custom stained glass that will be used in the new space for the General Store. Those properties will be retired from use in the coming year, and we will transition to functioning from the Grove Ronald McDonald House and West County House.

In June, we plan to host a Grove House ribboncutting ceremony to welcome guest families, volunteers, and supporters to the newest Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis. Leading up to this hallmark event, we are aiming to host a variety of smaller events for capital campaign supporters and friends of the House.

As our vision comes to life, we are incredibly proud of the countless supporters who have

made this possible.

MEET THE SOBANIA FAMILY

When new parents traveled to St. Louis to adopt their son, RMHC St. Louis provided a home-away-from-home.

Brooks was born on October 14, 2023, at St. Louis Children’s Hospital at 10:43 AM and immediately transferred to the NICU. His parents, Mucki and Jacob, patiently awaited his arrival in Gass Lake, Michigan, to meet their soon-to-be adopted son for the first time. In the whirlwind of receiving the call that baby Brooks was on his way, the Sobania family hit the road to St. Louis for the almost 500-mile drive straight through to be there.

Mucki and Jacob were overjoyed to meet Baby Brooks for the first time with his biological mother and father.

“I can’t describe it; it wasn’t anxiety, but excitement to meet our son. Seeing his little hands and feet was wonderful,” says Mucki. “Jacob described him as a four-pound angel. We couldn’t stop looking at him.”

Brooks was in the NICU for the next three weeks, growing stronger until he was ready to head to his new home in Michigan. Meanwhile, Mucki and Jacob needed somewhere to stay close to Brooks. Thankfully, there was a room at the West Pine Ronald McDonald House just minutes from the hospital.

“Not having to worry about where to stay to be close to Brooks was such a great help. We are so happy we didn’t have to go into debt to stay near our son, especially when they shared with us

that he needed to be in the NICU longer than we first anticipated,” says Mucki. “We didn’t want to leave his side, but the nurses and staff at RMHC reassured us we had to take care of ourselves through the process, too. The Ronald McDonald House was our sense of normalcy.”

Mucki and Jacob shared how difficult it was to balance being there for their son, finding time to be outside, and having hot meals back at the West Pine House. The staff always made

it a little easier. They described it as a sense of community both at the House and the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside the hospital.

“The Family Room was just steps away from his room. It was the perfect quiet space to meet with Brooks’s appointed lawyer to discuss the next steps with the adoption,” says Mucki. “The people who volunteer in the Family Room want to help; it’s awesome. I was so happy to have a place to get away from the beeping, walk

5 Heartbeat • Spring/Summer 2024

through the halls to go somewhere, and sometimes there were even freshly baked cookies.”

In November, the Sobania Family was ready to pack and head home to Michigan. The anticipated 7-hour trip ended up taking close to 14 hours. Mucki and Jacob shared that traveling all that way with a preemie is a challenge.

Now, the new parents are experiencing the joys of caring for a newborn, living their dream as a family, with the adoption to be finalized in May 2024. We couldn’t be happier for them as they continue their journey.

For over seven years, Joan Schlichter has volunteered in the Family Rooms at Mercy Hospital - St. Louis

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: JOAN SCHLICHTER

The doors of the Family Rooms at Mercy Hospital continue to be open to families because of passionate volunteers like Joan.

Supporting children is a life passion for Joan Schlichter. After a career as a reading specialist for kindergarten through fourth grade in the St. Charles School District, she retired in 2017, and knew she wanted to continue her life’s mission of service.

Getting involved with Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis was an easy choice after being around the charity for over 30 years with her husband, Mark, a past board and longtime committee member. Joan quickly signed up to be part of the Family Room program and volunteer at Mercy Hospital – St. Louis. She and Mark are often found picking up shifts to keep the doors open to families.

“When parents come into the Family Room, they want to share their experience and need someone to listen. We are here to help; sometimes it’s like being a teacher again by being a listening ear for someone,” says Joan.

“I’ve heard over and over again through the years just how appreciative families are for the space and amenities in the room. They are inspired to want to pay it forward for the next parents and start supporting the charity.”

Joan truly enjoys creating a space for families and children to step away from the stress and emotional toll to find a few moments of refuge. The Family Room offers a tranquil space with showers, laundry facilities, snacks, comfortable seating, and all the little things a family may need, like shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lotion, or a nice fluffy towel. Offering a few comforts of home to them when they need it most. Only through our dedicated volunteers can we keep the doors open to families each day to offer these services.

When Joan isn’t brewing coffee and creating a welcoming environment in the Family Room, she can be found supporting a national tutoring

9 Heartbeat • Spring/Summer 2024

program in St. Charles called Oasis, playing pickleball, golfing and spending time with her grandchildren. However, the Schlichter family continues to find time for Ronald McDonald House, whether cooking a meal together at the West County House or being present for the annual auctions.

“I just love the generous and caring people associated with the charity. I get blown away with how kind people are to give back,” says Joan. “When you retire, you have to stay busy and make connections with all kinds of people in the

community. RMHC St. Louis continues to provide those opportunities.”

Here at RMHC St. Louis, we are grateful to count Joan among our most dedicated volunteers, and we are thrilled the feeling is mutual.

“I love it! Volunteering allows you to play a role in bettering the community. It’s gratifying to support such a great organization,” says Joan. “By focusing on others, you make connections that will change your life. I love meeting the people, the families, and especially the kids.” ■

SUPPORT OUR FAMILY ROOMS

In 2023, the St. Louis-area Ronald McDonald Family Rooms supported over 45,000 local and out-of-town visitors. There is a need for pre-packaged and individually wrapped snacks, travel-sized toiletries and high efficiency laundry pods. Learn more at rmhcstl.com/wishlist.

SROUND-UP FOR RMHC

Our founding and forever partner, McDonald’s, continues to rally for guest families in St. Louis and beyond.

ince the Round-Up for RMHC program started in 2019, it has grown to collectively raise over $39 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities across the nation.

Here in St. Louis, we are blown away by the community’s continued support to participate in the giving program at McDonald’s simply by saying “yes” to rounding up for guest families. In 2023 alone, our community raised $3.1 million at their local McDonald’s – that’s awesome!

Only through the support of our local owner/ operators, mid-managers, and crew members will the momentum continue for the co-op of Metro St. Louis. Three local franchise owners hit the astonishing milestone of raising over $1 million through their business since the program’s inception five years ago, and two more operators will reach the milestone in early 2024.

As fundraising leaders of the nation, the local

co-op issued a Round-Up Challenge to the McDonald’s field office to inspire other regions to give. The field office, or larger group that St. Louis is part of, includes stores from Missouri to Tennessee. Together the larger region raised $10 million for the charity in 2023.

There are no words to truly describe how grateful we are for the hundreds of thousands of times the question, “Would you like to RoundUp for RMHC?” is asked. We are even more grateful for all those folks who say, “Yes!” As our community continues to lead the nation in this fundraising program, we are so proud to call St. Louis our home.

The next time you are under the golden arches to order a large fry, cheese burger, or seasonal Shamrock Shake, remember to Round-Up for RMHC. That small change will make a huge difference in the lives of seriously ill children and their families seeking medical treatment in our city.

Nolan Ruiz, Joan Elhoffer and Chris Giarla celebrate their teams and customers as they become the first Owner/Operators to join the $1 Million Club.
13 Heartbeat • Spring/Summer 2024

OUR FRIENDS. OUR PARTNERS. OUR FOUNDATION.

We would like to thank our 2023 Cornerstone Society members for their generosity! Last year, Cornerstone Society members’ donations totaled more than $2.3 million.

The Cornerstone Society was established in 2012 to recognize the individuals, organizations and corporations that give an unrestricted donation of $1,000 or more to RMHC St. Louis. In 12 years since its inception, Cornerstone Society members have donated nearly $21 million to provide a home-away-from-home to seriously ill children and their families. We are proud to share that the society has grown from 339 to more than 554 members.

On February 22, 2024, we hosted a Cornerstone Society Celebration, presented by McDonald’s, at the Westborough Country Club to honor our 2023 donors. A short program recognized Bayer Fund, Concord Village Lions Club, and Paula & Rodger Riney with awards for their outstanding commitment to RMHC. We would also like to thank our sponsors for underwriting this event.

We are extremely grateful for all of our generous supporters. To see a list of all our 2023 Annual Giving donors, please visit us online at rmhcstl.com/donors.

“YOU CAN COUNT ON US”

The Loiterstein Family continues to support guest families at RMHC. Each year, the Loiterstein family, Phyllis, Howard, Nicole, Jason and Jack, bands together with their friends and neighbors for multiple initiatives to support RMHC. “The photo tells a wonderful and heartwarming story of love, generational giving and what it means to return kindness to others,” says Nicole Loiterstein. In 2023, they raised over $8,000 to help families when they need it most. Learn more about their three family-centered projects. We are so grateful for their continued support!

1. Meals from the Heart

They provided Thanksgiving dinner to the families at the West Pine House with the help of longtime partners and friends, Bob & Clarice Manges. In December, families at the Park Avenue House enjoyed Christmas dinner and holiday treats. Yum!

2. Fill the Pantry

The 2nd Annual Fill the Pantry event drew 27 families and provided a ‘bite sized’ opportunity for our next generation of givers to get involved. Even their littlest volunteers restocked the Grab ’n Go Snack Pantry with 18,890 singleserve snacks and ready to eat meals. They also assembled 100 activity kits filled with games and toys for RMH siblings and kids to enjoy.

3. Loads of Love

The family also organized a laundry detergent pod drive called, Loads of Love, where we collected over 2,000 detergent pods. It was enough to fully restock the laundry rooms at all three Houses and all four hospital Family Rooms!

C50 YEARS

Globally, Ronald McDonald House Charities has proudly provided a place for families seeking medical treatment since 1974.

are is what has motivated our work since day one. It’s in the meals we make, the hugs we give and the miles we travel. We care for families so they can care for theirs.

Together we have created a global community of care that provides emotional, mental and financial support for families and their children.

This community began in 1974 in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia Eagles football player Fred Hill and his wife, Fran, learned that their daughter, Kim, had leukemia. While traveling into Philadelphia for treatment at the children’s hospital, they met other families in the same situation. These families drove hours to the hospital to be with their children, only to sleep overnight in waiting room chairs and to eat from vending machines because they had nowhere else to go.

Fred Hill and his football team decided to do

62 Countries and regions

something for these families by building them a “home-away-from-home” in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Eagles teamed up with local McDonald’s Owner/Operators to raise money, purchase and restore a house near the hospital where these families could stay. The collaboration with McDonald’s sparked the first in-store fundraiser, the seasonal Shamrock Shake. By October, the first Ronald McDonald House was born.

Seven years later in 1981, the West Pine Ronald McDonald House was opened in St. Louis.

The RMHC vision is for a world where every family has what they need to ensure the best health outcomes for their children. Today, RMHC is closer to seeing that dream come true also. Each year, RMHC serves millions of families through nearly 400 House programs worldwide and 290+ additional programs and services dedicated to supporting the whole family.

690 Core programs worldwide MILLIONS of families supported globally

RMHC Programs help alleviate some financial burden for families with sick children. Guest families save more than $611 million in hotel and meal expenses. Learn more about the global impact of RMHC programs at rmhc.org/about-us/our-impact 19 Heartbeat • Spring/Summer 2024

MEET THE SNIDER FAMILY

Emerson’s grandma reflects on the family’s experience at the Park Avenue Ronald McDonald House

From the very beginning, Mary Snider has always been a part of her grandson Emerson Vincelette’s life. When her daughter Elizabeth passed, she was granted guardianship of her grandson.

“He lives with me, and I am able to see my daughter’s smile and eyes in him every day,” Mary Snider said. “My husband and I cherish every moment.”

Fifteen-year-old Emerson was born on August 27, 2008, at 23 weeks premature at St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Seconds after birth, Emerson was transported to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

His mother Elizabeth, who was unsure where she would stay, drove to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital to be with her newborn baby.

After arriving at the hospital, Elizabeth was informed about the Park Avenue Ronald McDonald House where she could stay close to her son.

“We were all so grateful for the Ronald McDonald House,” Mary Snider said. “To know that you live two hours away is stressful. Being able to be a block and a half away in case something happened gives you a sense of ease, even if you weren’t right in the room with him.”

Mary reflects on how she and her daughter enjoyed staying at the Park Avenue House.

“The Ronald McDonald House is the perfect place to stay, we had a warm meal every evening, access to laundry, and that feeling of living with people who truly cared,” Mary said.

In addition to staying at the Ronald McDonald House, their family also participated in many events to help raise awareness and contributions for the organization. Each year, Mary returns to the Park Avenue House with Emerson for the Annual Tab Top Pandemonium event.

“He thinks it’s the greatest thing and always wants to come back,” Mary said.

Now in his first year of high school. Emerson is a straight-A student who enjoys playing the guitar, drums, and video games.

“If you met him you would know he is the kindest, politest, and sweetest kid you probably would ever meet,” Mary said. “I’ve watched Emerson tackle every obstacle that comes his way, I am so proud of him.”

Thinking back to when Emerson was just a little baby, Mary is so grateful for the comfort and support her family received.

“The House is home for so many families during difficult times. Until you go through it, you don’t realize the importance of the house being there,” Mary said. “It enriches lives and keeps families together. There are no words to describe just how grateful we are for it.”

2023 HEART & SOLE AWARD

Each year, we recognize a company or individual that has gone above and beyond in their support of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. In December 2023, Kirk and Lisa Syberg received the Heart & Sole award during the Board of Directors Holiday Dinner.

“For the last 24 years, Kirk and Lisa have given back to our charity in so many ways. Lisa began volunteering on Tuesday mornings in 2001, supporting our finance office and helping at countless special events. Kirk and Lisa are founding members of our Cornerstone Society and generous donors of the Let’s Make Room Capital Campaign for the new Ronald McDonald House,” explained Board Chair Bridget Hoy Beardsley during the reception. “Additionally, they have supported the mission through the Syberg Family Restaurants by providing space for meetings, food for our events, and items at dinner auctions. Most notably, for over 30 years, Syberg restaurant has catered lunch for our sporting clays event, feeding 250 participants annually.”

Created in 2005, the Heart & Sole Award exemplifies the spirit of support given to our charity by the agents, managers, and executives at Coldwell Banker Reality – Gundaker for their 30+ years of partnership.

We are incredibly proud to call Kirk and Lisa friends of the House. Congratulations again!

BUILDING A FUTURE AT RMHC

Past guest family of the Kansas City Ronald McDonald House gives back in a big way to support the new location in St. Louis.

Kevin Anderson was born and raised in St. Louis. He is the President and CEO of Wilson’s Structural Steel, which provides fabrication and structural steel erection for commercial and industrial construction projects around the St. Louis area. Kevin’s career in the steel fabrication business started 31 years ago, right out of high school. His father-in-law, Ken Wilson, the Founder of Wilson’s Structural Steel, asked him to join the team.

In 2018, Kevin’s daughter Abby was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, which is a disorder that causes chronic pain. For Abby to be treated for her disorder, she had to see a specialist at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, Missouri.

After doing research, Kevin and his wife Erika were told about the Ronald McDonald House in Kansas City. Unsure of how Ronald McDonald House Charities operate, Kevin and his family made a consultation visit to ensure the House would be a fit. To their relief, there was no other place they would rather be.

“It made life easy because it was safe and close enough to the hospital that you could walk,” Kevin Anderson said. “It took a lot of the stress off of our minds because the scariest part about being somewhere new was that we had no idea what area we were in or what we were doing, but

the resources and the staff helped us if we had questions.”

After his daughter spent the next three months in Kansas City for treatment, he and his wife knew they wanted to be long-time supporters of RMHC.

“The experience was just amazing, and it was at that point that we just felt like it was a calling that my family needed to do more to help the organization,” Kevin said. “We want to help continue with the co-belief of the organization and what the mission actually is, and from there, it just started slowly, and it transitioned to where we are now, trying to help more and more every year.”

When Kevin’s family returned home to St. Louis, he was introduced to Dan Harbaugh, the President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. Ever since, Kevin has sponsored the Annual Scramble for Charity Golf Tournament and donated wish list items for the House.

“As business is good, we can do more, so every year I try to build on that. My goal is not only to do a sponsorship but also try to do things throughout the year,” Kevin said. “We like to support organizations that stay close to home. We are a community-based company, and we

rely upon our community for the work that we do in the St. Louis area, so for us, it’s wanting to give back to the same community that’s given us the successes that we’ve seen thus far, and there’s no better one to choose than RMHC St. Louis.”

When Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis started creating plans to expand in St. Louis City, Kevin saw an opportunity for Wilson’s Structural Steel to give back by making an in-kind donation of steel. We could not be more thankful for this incredible donation to build the Grove location.

“The decision was very easy and a simple gesture,” said Kevin. “It has been a wonderful and rewarding project to be a part of, and it’s turning

out absolutely beautiful.

Kevin continues to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis and encourages others to get involved.

“Ronald McDonald House Charities is a firstclass organization. For us, this charity is at the top of our list and will always be,” Kevin said. “We couldn’t be more grateful to use their services and have the opportunity to give back to help families like ours.”
