Dear Friends:

A Note from our Board Chair

From the top of my head to the tip of my red shoes, I am grateful to Steve Hays who has been serving as Interim President of RMHC St. Louis since midAugust, totally out of the goodness of his heart. The organization has been doing great under Steve’s and the Executive Team’s leadership.

That said, 2024 was undoubtedly a roller coaster year for RMHC St. Louis, and the fact that we needed an interim president still weighs heavy on many hearts. In my own life, in busy times or under pressure, the sequencing of events through lists and notes creates accuracy and calm. Focusing only on what needs to be accomplished in the immediate next step, without dwelling on the many steps down the road, gives some peace. For our families with ill children, the steps before them may be unknown, or out of their control. For them, I imagine, having to focus on anything but the next hospital visit may be unbearable. Within our Houses and Family Rooms, friends of RMHC are sequencing events for our families – giving them a smile, a warm bed, healthy food, supplies, space, and love. This is why we call RMHC “the House that Love Built.” Because through love, we are able to provide for the essentials of our families, so families can focus on their greatest need at the moment–the health of their loved ones.

This year, as you are all aware, RMHC St. Louis has navigated a remarkable series of milestones with exceptional skill and dedication. These achievements include the hiring of two new vice presidents, the grand opening of our Grove House, the sale of the West Pine House, our departure from the Park Avenue House, renovation of the West County House kitchen, and the historic establishment of an endowed fund honoring the legacy of our thirty-year leader, the late Dan Harbaugh. And in another notable milestone, most recently, on November 16, we cheered on our Board Member, Secretary, and McDonald’s

Owner/Operator, Joan Elhoffer, as she received the RMHC Global Golden Impact Award in the individual category for her successful efforts to catapult Round-Up donations to RMHC across the country. Congratulations and thank you Joan!

Now we stand before another exciting event; we are thrilled beyond words to have appointed R.J. Crunk as our incoming President & CEO. R.J. is a gem for all the reasons you will soon learn. In a major sequencing of events, he has been oriented with the physical spaces, the staff, the budget, our Hospital partners, the volunteers, our Board meetings, the Global RMHC leadership, the McDonald’s Owners & Operators, the fundarising events, tab tops collections, and most importantly, the families staying at our Houses and visiting our Family Rooms. Having spent time with R.J. and his wife, Carlie, I know they are ready and willing. The sequence of events that brought him to this appointment is his own story to tell, but I promise you his appointment is not random. It is divinely-inspired and, in my opinion, exactly what the organization needs at this moment in its history to keep moving onward and upward from the positive position it already enjoys.

My time as Chair of the Board is almost complete. What I’ve learned first-hand during my nine years on the Board and two as Chair, is that the RMHC mission pulls at your heart and gets into your soul. Among our volunteers and donors, one person’s generosity tops the next, and inspires one to be more generous than they may have originally been inclined. This is the type of sequencing of events for which we can all be proud. Thank you all for letting me, my husband Iain, and my entire family experience the House that Love Built from this unique perspective.

Sincerely,

A Note from our new PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis Family,

I am honored to join you as the new President & CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, following in the footsteps of a remarkable leader, Dan Harbaugh, who dedicated over 30 years to this mission. I am deeply grateful for the warm welcome and for the privilege of being part of such a special community—a community that shares a profound commitment to supporting families when they need it most.

As we open this new chapter together, I’m filled with excitement about the opportunities ahead to expand our impact, deepen our connections, and continue the compassionate, family-centered care that defines Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. I come to this role with a passion for bringing people together and a strong belief in the transformative power of community. Working side-by-side with our dedicated team, tireless volunteers, and generous supporters, my goal is to honor our legacy while looking to the future.

This transition is a unique time to celebrate all we’ve achieved together and to dream big about what we can accomplish in the years ahead. Here’s what you can expect as we move forward:

1. A Listening Tour: Over the coming months, I’ll be meeting with as many of you as possible— families, staff, donors, partners, and volunteers. Hearing your stories and learning from your experiences will be invaluable in shaping our next steps.

2. Building on Our Legacy: With deep respect for the strong foundation established by those before me, I am committed to preserving our core values while exploring innovative ways to serve even more families and to extend the reach of our services.

3. Community Connections: Ronald McDonald House Charities has always been a cornerstone of support in St. Louis, and I am excited to build upon our relationships with local organizations, healthcare providers, and our passionate supporters. Together, we can continue strengthening this community, making sure families always have a place to call home when they need it most.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your ongoing support. As we embark on this journey together, I look forward to meeting you, learning from you, and working alongside you. My door will always be open, and I encourage you to reach out and share your ideas and dreams for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis.

Thank you for all you do for our families, and thank you for entrusting me with this opportunity to lead our incredible organization into the future. Together, we will continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the families we serve.

Yours in service,

MEET RAYHON

After traveling many miles from home, Rayhon and his family found comfort and care at our Ronald McDonald House

In the heart of St. Lucia, Rochelle Baptiste welcomed her first child, Rayhon Henrey, on January 12, 2024 After 12 hours of labor and medical intervention due to hypertension, Rayhon was delivered with a Brachial plexus injury, a rare condition affecting the nerves connecting his neck to his arm. Rochelle’s joy as a new mother quickly mixed with concern.

Navigating uncertainty, Rochelle sought answers from local doctors and therapists. Despite repeated visits to hospitals in St. Lucia, clear answers were scarce. After visiting a private physician Rochelle learned her son needed specialized nerve surgery to regain movement of his arm.

“The physician informed me that when Rayhon was being delivered, his nerves were stretched from his spine to his neck, leading to immobility,” says Rochelle. “It was overwhelming not knowing what was wrong and then finding out how severe the problem was.”

With local resources limited, Rochelle and her family found hope through the World Pediatric Project, a program that connects families globally to expert pediatric surgeons in the United States.

“There was a team of doctors who came to St. Lucia to perform surgeries for children like Rayhon,” says Rochelle.

The World Pediatric Project recommended that the surgery should be done in St. Louis, Missouri, where advanced medical facilities could best address the complexity of Rayhon’s case.

In September 2024, Rochelle and Rayhon left

their island home for St. Louis. With the support of the World Pediatric Project and Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, they found comfort and support upon their arrival.

“It’s definitely a privilege,” says Rochelle. “I would have never known such a place existed to help people out, especially families who can’t afford it. It really feels like a home-away-from-home.”

Their time in St. Louis was filled with unexpected joys. Rochelle embraced the warmth of the RMHC St. Louis community, and enjoyed participating in holiday activities like Halloween trunk-or-treats and outings organized by the charity.

“Back home, we don’t celebrate Halloween like in the U.S.,” says Rochelle. “It was a really special experience for Rayhon to dress up. He enjoyed it. It’s moments like these that ease the anxiety of being far from family.”

Looking ahead, Rochelle knows that Rayhon’s journey to recovery will be long but with therapy and his unstoppable spirit, he will continue to conquer.

When they return to St. Lucia, Rochelle plans to spread awareness about RMHC St. Louis and the resources provided, to ensure other families facing similar challenges know they are not alone.

“I feel privileged to be part of the Ronald McDonald House Charities family and I want people to know about this amazing place,” says Rochelle. “They make you feel at home, even when you are miles away.”

CELEBRATING LEGACY

Joan Elhoffer honored with RMHC Global’s first Golden

Joan Elhoffer remembers the late-August phone call from Ronald McDonald House Charities Global, sharing extraordinary news: she had been selected as a recipient of the RMHC Global Golden Impact Award. This prestigious honor, designed to recognize individuals whose contributions have profoundly shaped the organization, is a fitting tribute to Joan’s inspiring and entrepreneurial efforts.

The award was inspired by her visionary creation of Round-Up for RMHC, a simple yet transformative fundraising initiative she began in St. Louis. Alongside her friend and RMHC colleague, Dan Harbaugh, Joan launched the program, which invites customers to Round-Up their purchases to the nearest dollar to support RMHC. What started as a local endeavor has grown into a global movement, projected to reach nearly $60 million in cumulative revenue by the end of 2024.

Impact Award

Reflecting on the recognition, Joan acknowledged the vital role Dan played in shaping their shared mission.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be given this award. What you saw [in the video] is that I had a very good champion and cheerleader throughout this whole process. And that was our President and CEO of the RMHC St. Louis Chapter, Dan Harbaugh,” Joan said.

The award ceremony, held on Saturday, November 16, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois, was an emotional evening filled with gratitude and reflection. Joan knew exactly who needed to stand beside her on this special night. She invited Dan’s wife, Kelly, and their children, Libby and Jack, to join her and her husband, David Elhoffer, to celebrate this shared achievement. As Joan accepted the award on stage, her heartfelt words captured the significance of the moment.

It’s been a real journey, it’s a lot of things we had to change, adapt, and do but McDonald’s has been so committed to helping us with this,” Joan said.

The evening’s celebrations culminated in another generous act. The Golden Impact Award included a $50,000 grant, which awardees could donate to a chapter of their choice. Without hesitation, Joan earmarked the funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, the chapter where her journey began. Specifically, she plans to direct the grant to the Dan Harbaugh Endowment, ensuring his legacy of leadership and unwavering belief in the mission will continue to thrive.

As the room erupted in applause, Joan felt the magnitude of the moment. This was more than an award; it was a testament to the transformative power of collaboration, vision, and unwavering commitment to a cause. Glancing at Dan’s family in the audience, Joan knew that their partnership—and Dan’s enduring legacy— would continue to inspire and positively affect countless lives around the globe. ■

Keeping Families Close

WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST

For the past eight years, the Slivniker family has found a home-awayfrom-home at Ronald McDonald House during their annual trip from Slovenia to St. Louis for Brina.

In 2016, Brina underwent selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery in St. Louis. This is an effective option for reducing spasticity in children with cerebral palsy. Brina underwent surgery in hope of improving her mobility and quality of life.

April 2024 marked a special moment in Brina’s journey when she took her first unassisted steps in therapy. With her successful surgery and years of intense therapy, she is thriving.

“I planned to show my big brother how I walk,” says Brina. “I want to walk my dog one day.”

By taking away the worry of where to stay or how to afford their month-long stay in the United States, RMHC has become their refuge by offering a place to stay and heal.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME 2024 Appeal

YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

The Home Away from Home Appeal provides the financial foundation for the annual operation of our two Ronald McDonald Houses and four Ronald McDonald Family Rooms.

The actual cost of a family’s one-night stay at the Ronald McDonald House is $125; however, we ask families to contribute just a small fraction of that amount. Due to mounting medical bills and other uninsured living expenses, 70% of families cannot afford this contribution - but no family is ever turned away if they are unable to pay

Your gift will help us continue to serve children and their families. To make a contribution to the 2024 Home Away from Home Appeal, please use the donation envelope attached to this newsletter. To make a gift online, visit us at rmhcstl.org/homeawayfromhome.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: QUINCIE HUMPHREY

Quincie Humphrey, a St. Louis native and retired Boeing employee of 37 years, has devoted her time and energy to giving back to her community. For nearly two decades, one of her most cherished commitments has been volunteering for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis.

Quincie's journey with RMHC of St. Louis began by preparing meals with her former coworkers for families at the former West Pine Ronald McDonald House.

“We would buy food and create meals for the families, because we knew their focus needed to be on their child,” Quincie said.

This experience was so fulfilling that, upon retirement in 2018 she continued her service with RMHC St. Louis. More recently one can find Quincie spending her Thursdays in the Ronald McDonald House Family Room at St. Louis Children's Hospital. She starts her shift early to ensure everything is in place before families arrive, enabling a comforting space for family members to rest during challenging days.

“The first thing I do is make the coffee,” says Quincie. “Then, I gather my cleaning supplies because I want to keep things clean and in order for them.”

She treasures the moments spent making the Family Room feel like a home-away-

from-home. Quincie strives to be a source of calm and support, ready to meet various family needs, from providing free toiletries to providing a listening ear.

“I want to make things as comfortable as possible for parents when they come to the RMHC Family Room. Having your baby in the hospital is enough on your mind but when they are in the NICU that’s a totally different picture,” Quincie said.

Her warmth extends beyond RMHC. On Saturdays, she volunteers at Food Outreach, preparing meals for those facing health challenges. On Sundays, you can find her working in her church's food pantry. Quincie’s desire to give back stems from her upbringing as the youngest of twelve siblings in a family that, despite limited means, was always focused on helping others.

“I keep in mind what my mother instilled in us - to help and be a help because you never know when you might need help yourself,” says Quincie.

For Quincie, the most priceless reward is the gratitude expressed by the families she helps.

“The look on the families’ faces, how they are so appreciative of it. You see their situation, and you just say, however, I can help, let me help,” says Quincie. "To see the faces of the families who are so appreciative - you just can’t beat it.”■

MEGAN MURPHY is thrilled to begin her role as a Family Care Specialist at RMHC. A recent Rockhurst University graduate, she has also started her Master’s in SpeechLanguage Pathology at Saint Louis University. Meg enjoys spending time with family and friends, running, and exploring new coffee shops.

RYAN CAMPBELL

is thrilled to join the RMHC staff, bringing years of proven leadership and operations experience to the team. When he’s not working, Ryan cherishes quality time with friends and family. Ryan is excited to contribute and make a positive impact and looks forward to collaborating with everyone and supporting RMHC’s mission in meaningful ways.

Congratulations to our team members who were recently promoted within the organization!

LIVING THE DREAM:

THE ARTFUL JOURNEY OF ZACK SMITHEY

For Zack Smithey, art isn’t just a career—it’s his calling, a lifelong pursuit fueled by creativity, determination, and a deep connection to his roots. Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and a lifelong resident of St. Charles, Zack was shaped into the interdisciplinary artist he is today. Zack’s love for art began in childhood under the guidance of his grandmother, a professional artist.

“When she babysat me, she’d set up still-life models on the kitchen table,” says Zack. “She’d paint on one side, and I’d paint on the other. Starting in elementary school, I was getting college-level critiques and lessons from her.”

Today, Zack is living his dream, waking up each day to create art and embark on diverse creative projects for organizations and companies.

“I concentrate on how something is created rather than what is created,” says Zach. “That focus has led me to explore different materials, techniques, and styles—everything from murals and bronze sculptures to sensory art and realistic portraits.”

Zack’s art at the Grove Ronald McDonald House is a prime example of his approach. Inside the playroom, he created sensory art pieces that blend vibrant colors and tactile elements, designed to engage and inspire young minds.

“Children are more open-minded to seeing possibilities,” says Zack. “They see things that often sometimes adults might miss.”

The Ronald McDonald House playroom project builds on Zack’s earlier Materialization of Sound Series, which visualizes sound through vibrant patterns. For RMHC St. Louis, he adapted the concept to create durable, child-friendly art that brightens the space while sparking the imagination of children.

“Each piece stands alone, but each piece also plays nicely with the pieces around it. So, they play together as a single, larger piece,” says Zack.

Creating the sensory art for RMHC St. Louis deepened Zack’s connection to and appreciation for the organization.

“Before this, I knew very little about RMHC, but touring the facility and seeing the impact it has on families was incredible,” says Zack. “I am now honored that I could be a small part of this larger system of helping families.”

Zack and his wife are committed to philanthropy, focusing on charities for children and animals. He and his wife want to become more involved with RMHC St. Louis.

“My wife and I love supporting organizations that make a difference,” says Zack.

From his grandmother’s kitchen table to highprofile installations, Zack’s journey is one of passion, persistence, and purpose. Through his work, he’s not just making art. Like RMHC, he’s making a difference. ■

Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis extends its deepest sympathy to the families of these very special children:

MEET FELICIA MALTER

Planned gifts are vital to the long-term sustainability of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. These generous contributions provide a lasting legacy, ensuring we can continue supporting seriously ill children and their families for many years to come. We are profoundly grateful to individuals, like Felicia, whose foresight and commitment to our mission will profoundly impact families for generations.

“There was never a question about including RMHC in my planned giving,” says Felicia. “This organization has made a lasting impact on my life and my family’s life through the work we do and the relationships we’ve built.”

For over two decades, Felicia has been a volunteer leader and devoted donor in our community. Her leadership has played a pivotal role in our organization’s success. Most notably, she served on the Board of Directors from 2008 to 2016, including as Board Chair from 2015 to 2016.

“My mentor at work, Steve Hays, got me involved with the House,” says Felicia. “The people and the mission keep me coming back—the amazing staff who work tirelessly every day to support families facing the toughest challenges. By providing a place to stay near the hospital and hot meals, we allow families to focus on their child during an incredibly difficult time.”

During her tenure as Board Chair, Felicia provided the strategic vision and guidance that helped propel the organization forward. She is a founding member of our Cornerstone Society and a crucial donor to the Let’s Make Room Capital Campaign. Her philanthropic efforts have helped shape the future of RMHC St. Louis.

“I want to leave a legacy my kids can be proud

of,” says Felicia. “When we discussed my planned giving, my daughters and I talked about the charities I would support. RMHC has been a part of our family since they were born, and leaving a legacy gift felt right. More importantly, I want my girls to know how much giving of your time, talent, and treasure means to me. I believe I’ve passed that on to them, and I’m excited to see how they get involved in their own communities,"

Felicia’s planned gift, designated to the Dan Harbaugh Endowment, ensures her legacy will continue supporting families whose children are facing serious illnesses. The endowment was created to provide essential resources to provide comfort and care to families in perpetuity, while also celebrating the life and legacy of Dan Harbaugh, whose compassion and generosity continue to inspire us all.

“How do you put into words the impact someone has had on your life?,” says Felicia. “Dan was like a big brother to me, a dear friend and incredible leader. This endowment made him happy. He wasn’t one for personal recognition, but he loved the House. He knew this fund would keep ‘The House that Love Built’ strong long after we’re gone.”

Felicia’s unwavering commitment to RMHC St. Louis is a shining example of how one individual can make a lasting difference. We are deeply thankful for her generosity, leadership, and enduring legacy, she has created through her planned gift which will continue to bring hope and support to families for years to come.

COMFORT THROUGH NATURE

In collaboration with the Missouri Botanical Gardens, guest families are enjoying therapeutic horticulture at our West County House.

Therapeutic Horticulture uses plants and gardening activities to improve a person's wellbeing by deepening their connection to nature. Missouri Botanical Gardens staff developed a specific therapeutic horticulture program for Ronald McDonald House with the goals of creating a greater sense of home, providing stress-relieving experiences, and an opportunity to connect with nature. The Therapeutic Horticulture team makes monthly visits to the Ronald McDonald House for activities like flower arranging, making herbal infusions for tea, spice sachets, or creating natural mandalas. We serve families at the House from the Caribbean, South America and Central America, many of whom enjoy these activities. The Garden provides bilingual signage, bilingual instructors, and plants from those regions to bring them a bit of home.

“Through this partnership, we are building stronger connections to nature while also helping the Ronald McDonald House feel even more like home,” said Jennifer Smith-Simms, Manager of Public Education Programs at the Garden.

This spring, the Garden expanded its partnership to include permanent garden beds at Ronald McDonald House, thanks to a collaboration with local scout, Kylie Phipps. For her Eagle Scout project, Phipps designed four raised beds and three containers on the back patio of the West County House that feature sensory rich plants from tropical regions, including many plants families love to use with their meals.

"Our collaboration with Missouri Botanical Garden extends to enriching our West County Ronald McDonald House spaces," says Jane Foerstel, Family Services Manager "This garden is a source of fresh ingredients that families enjoy using. A guest dad made his 'special' chicken marinade this week with scallions and thyme from the patio. We are grateful for this incredible partnership to create an environment where families enjoy the beauty of nature and can cook meals together, fostering moments of comfort, connection, and healing."
