Rocky Mountain District Key Club
Rocky Mountain District (RMD) Key Club: Call to Convention 2014 Hello, Faculty Advisors of the RMD! It’s that time of year again – time to start thinking about the 2014 RMD Key Club District Convention 2014! This year’s convention will be held April 4-6 at the Sheraton Denver West Hotel in Lakewood, CO. At the District Convention (DCON), themed Once Upon a DCON, students will have the opportunity to attend student-led forums that will give them the skills that they need to return to their Key Clubs as more knowledgeable, effective servant leaders and the motivation that they will need to make a difference in their homes, schools, and communities. They will also be able to engage in the parliamentary procedure of caucusing and electing new Rocky Mountain Key Club executive board members, the first ever districtwide service project, a Dance to Eliminate, and the Talent Show and Awards Ceremony. I attended my first District Convention as a freshman in April 2011, and I would not be the student nor the leader that I am today had I not taken the opportunity to come out of my shell and enjoy the weekend. DCON opened up infinite service possibilities to me on local, state, and national levels. Through my involvement with the Key Club district, I have gained professional skills that I will continue to use for the rest of my life. I would highly recommend DCON to all Key Club members who wish to build their leadership skills in and outside of Key Club. Faculty advisors are welcomed and encouraged to attend DCON. Upon attending, you will be able to see examples of service projects done by other Key Clubs in our area, be rewarded and help your students to be rewarded for their work in the past year, and receive training for serving the upcoming year as a faculty advisor, presented by Dave Harris, the Rocky Mountain District Administrator and other adult Key Club Advisors. This is also a great opportunity to collaborate with other advisors in planning for the upcoming year. Students and advisors are expected to arrive at the hotel in Lakewood between 3:00pm and 6:00pm on Friday, April 4. Opening session will begin at 7PM and the convention will adjourn by 12:00pm on Sunday, April 6. Rooms are available for students in single, double, triple, and quad occupancies (prices increase with fewer members in a room) and for advisors in single or double occupancies. Prices of convention stand at $216 per member for a quad, $234 for a triple, $264 for a double, and $372 for a single. This covers lodging, two meals, and all other expenses for the weekend. Students are encouraged to bring spare change for fundraisers that will occur throughout the weekend, but this is not necessary. They should also bring some extra funds to help cover the cost of meals that are not provided. Notice that all of these prices are divisible by 3. The Rocky Mountain District and Kiwanis International encourage the use of the one-third plan for paying for convention. In this plan one-third of the price is paid for by the student’s family, one-third by the school’s Key Club, and one-third by the sponsoring Kiwanis club. This is dependent on the funds that the Kiwanis club and the school’s Key Club are able to give. Registration forms, codes of conduct, and medical forms must be submitted by all students attending DCON, and will be available in Spring Mailing, received electronically by advisors, or online at www.rmdkeyclub.org. Note that award applications can also be found here; being recognized for your work is easy and will happen at the DCON Awards Ceremony! Please do not hesitate to contact me, your District Convention Chair, at emilysharp.rmd@gmail.com or 804-868-0683, or our District Administrator, Dave Harris, at RMDKCAd@aol.com or 720-341-5064 with any questions or concerns. I look forward to meeting each of you at District Convention 2014! Sincerely, Emily Sharp, District Convention Chair
