Loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt & friend, born Alice Geneva Smith to George & Annie Smith on April 23, 1933, in Anson County, North Carolina. Alice attended Anson County Public School System. Little Alice loved to learn and earned the title of valedictorian of her high school. She also loved the sport of basketball and played for her high school team.
Alice relocated to Washington, DC in the early 1950s to be near her sister, Rosa Harris. Soon after, she met & married the late Adolphus Reid, Jr. From that union, a son & a daughter were born. Alice began working as a caregiver & a licensed practical nurse. Soon after, Alice purchased a home in Palmer Park, MD, while working as a caregiver at night, and earning her Associate in Arts degree in nursing from Prince Georges Community College during the day. After graduating college in 1974, now a registered nurse, Alice Reid became a valued employee for over 20 years at Prince George’s Community Hospital Center until she retired in 1996.
Alice joined irst Baptist Church of Highland Park in August of 1981; her beloved church home. She was a member of the April Birthday Ministry and sang with the Lucy Wyatt Choir.
Alice loved to ish and has gone on several boat ishing trips with her church members, and friends. She inherited a “green thumb” from her mother Annie. She planted and grew tomatoes, collards, okra, and mint leaves in her garden. The perennial red and white roses, and colorful lower bushes she planted decades ago in her front yard would come back to visit Alice every spring & summer; more beautiful than the year before.
Alice is survived by a son, Wendell Reid; a daughter Alicia Reid-Johnson; a sister Rosa Harris; grandsons: Isaiah Reid & Bruce Johnson Jr., a son-in-law, Bruce Johnson, Sr.; a host of nephews & nieces, friends, neighbors, and loving church family. She was preceded in death by a special, caring & devoted friend, Mr. “Jessie” James Hall.
