TRIPLE DISASTER: THE FUKUSHIMA CRISIS

THE RESILIENCE OF FORM AND THE INTANGIBLE DISASTERS –NETWORK, SURFACE AND MESH The fukushima disaster is one of mankind’s deadliest natural and man-made disasters that faced the effects of both the forces of physics and the forces of nature. This disaster is one among the worst case scenarios for two of the nuclear power plants in Daiichi and Daini. Bad design decisions, technological hubris, broken safety cultures, lack of communication/ clarity and negligence of the Government were the few causes of this great catastrophe. Within just 4 years of time Fukushima transformed from a place with largest nuclear power plants to a most complex, expensive and expansive cleanup site.

Waste collection and removal have been very challenging tasks for the government in order to make the area free from toxic nuclear substances. Robots and advanced mechnical tools are being used to operate the radioactive waste within the reactor buildings where the dosage levels tend to be very high. It is evident that the social, economical and political costs are greater than benefits. Certainly there is a rebound effect, shift in trends, changes in energy policies and a serious mental health crisis.

The effects of a man-made crisis though not frequent looks less impactful but highly perilous for many generations. However in Japan, a sense of oneness, resilience, fortitude and prepardness help thrive the people and the country.

THE IMPACT OF THE SEEN: The visual destructions caused by a crisis like broken roads, damaged infrastructure and uprooted trees are often seen more impactful. The change of hues from orange highlights the transition of disasters from an earthquake to Tsunami to a nuclear fallout. The green indicates the unseen irreversible deadly disasters. A set of concentric circular patterns with varying wavelengths signify the magnitude of impact from a point of origin.

MESH. NETWORK. NODES: An ecosystem of different elements also with varying scales of impacts. Each element vary in deformations depending on its elasticity. Structural integrity and compositions play a vital part in their performance.

MOTION: ‘Brownian motion’ -the theory of random motion of particles yields interesting visuals about varying concentrations of particles within a space. Such voids represent human interventions opposing destructive forces of nature. The vivid red epicenter marks the chaotic critical point of disaster.

SURFACE: Increased forces tend to deteriorate a surface causing it to puncture and eventually out-breaks of a mysterious force.

Multiple entities in an ecosystem get affected when struck by a crisis. It is important to realise how it strikes on each spearate elements in order to understand how the overall harmony affected. Looking at specific details of disintegration would help better understand how to make ecosystems resilient by adjusting each member in their own manner An analysis of the origins of forms: from points, particles, lines, networks, meshes, nodes to surfaces are graphically represented. Their relationships geometry, resiliency, adaptiveness and integrity were explored. Each of the above elements react and respond to an impact in a unique way. The various mediums through which the spread occurs originating from a centre point is also portrayed.

There is chaos and disharmony, and the change is hihly irreversible

The story of the evolution of a surface starting from a point has been portrayed in a series. A vnetwork of static lines and nodes emerges which then attract meshes as enclosures. This vulnerable network slowly evolves into 3 strut tensegrity structures that are more elastic and resilient to sudden shocks/ impacts. Structures begin to form which adds to increased protection. As structures grow opposing forces tend to emerge. Firstly in X and Y directions resulting in skewing of meshes that eventually fail.

Movements in X, Y and Z directions result in tear of surfaces and meshes whereas networks stay intact due to its elasticity. In the last stage, where forces become intolerable, the integral structure fails as a whole resulting in destruction and then recovery.

Materials that are larger in scale tend to warp and collapse easier. Meshes being more in number in a unit area skew easily towards one direction when forces are applied. Networks of huge scales work well depending on the strength of nodes

Elements made out of simple geometry like meshes with weaves of strings tend to fail with little force. Networks with interconnected elements along the nodes help form a stronger bond hence better stability

Strength of materials play a vital role in resiliency. Elements wth fabric like formation tend to experience easy sliding movements across each structural elements hence disrupting their structural integrity. Materials that are reinforced or glued (solids) perform well with less motion within their arrangement

Structures that form a triangular lattice tend to perform extremely well due to its equal force distribution (tensegrity). Geometries like meshes with its weak weaving pattern tend to slide within their own framework.

Surfaces with lesser voids also experience more tension resulting in punctures.

MANIFESTO: NEGLIGENCE OF THE UNSEEN NEGLIGENCE There is an ancient disease that is still found in larger figures today: negligence. You, me, we fall prey in the web of negligence in every action that we do. A small spark out of negligence can wipe out the whole lot of existence. In simple sense we sometimes neglect the basic existence of the context that hosts us and neglect the negligence of others who live along with us, experience with us.

We neglect the things that we see, don’t see, co-exist, upcoming, past and the present. Our negligence has led some mysteries grow in greater scales that we never thought of like the Triple disaster of Fukushima. Earthquake, Tsunami and nuclear fallout. The wrath of nature, fury of the affected, tensions of the unseen. It is you. You choose whether your negligence jeopardizes the harmony of being whole. Ultimately, our collective negligence disrespects the harmony created by our own creator. Abusing the gifts of the giver is abusing the giver of the gift.

Negligence here, negligence there, self, else.

The thought of having a perfectly planned space/ infrastructures/ designs can manipulate our senses leading to fatal human error. Errors can occur due to time pressure, communications, exchange of information or while performing an application. It should be remembered that errors due to negligence can be a result of something accidental or due to lack of focus or even in worst cases, purposeful.

This disease is weaved in our actions that we don’t tend to feel. The invisible feel can lead to an accident. An accident that can lead to a catastrophe, A catastrophe into attention. Attention into a crisis. Crisis into a destruction. Destructions to losses. Losses to disharmony. Disharmony into distress. Suddenly like calm after a storm, peace after a war, night after a day, life continues after distress. Moments of happiness, pleasure, ecstasy, mere distractions, engulf our inner space that we let grow our negligence in our own space. Our own house, own communities, cities.

The definition of a space can never be the same after our negligence impacts it. Irretrievable spatial forms after destruction. Oh negligence! Neglecting the negligence is vital. Resistance and responsibility are vital. Negligence peaks when we have ‘Everything’ at our disposal. To collectively avoid any unforeseen disasters, avoid negligence caused by human error, not hold back the spirit of ambition that fosters innovation.

Re-adapting and reconfiguring have become the after-effect of a disaster without realizing the origins of the crisis. We look at a generic sense with a lack of focus on specific entities. Each element has unique characters in a network of ecosystem. We need to understand failures on individual entities and provide tailor made solutions on individual details and their impacting spaces since each of them have differing scales and geometries.

Pre-assessment of human interventions on nature is needed. Foreseeing the unseen disasters through experimentation and deeply understanding thresholds, tolerances is needed. We need to compliment natural healing.

The aim is to make the host space pioneer to revive itself, provide refuge, solve its crisis, provide space for extra growth and eventually foster re-humanization of architecture. Human agency is always thought as an aspect of uncertainty and unpredictability. This makes us view it as a destructive force. The alternative is to view human agency, us, as an advantage– a means by which we overcome risks and take advantage of new opportunities. Analyzing human behaviors, applications, trends across time frames and converting them into design parameters would surely help us adopt precise solutions based on the time of disaster. Architecture is key to revive broken surfaces, nodes, networks, their associated spaces and users hence advancing them far beyond their former glory.

The site (Al Jaddaf waterfront) lies between some well know old settlements and developing ones. Populous settlements around the creek region include Deira, Bur Dubai, oud metha, healthcare city and Festival city. The site is surrounded by many waterfront developments that anticipate the creek harbour that houses the next tallest structure (creek tower) in Dubai. Waterfront developments include Dubai Design District, healthcare city 2 and culture village phase 2. The rise of new highly focused development projects would boost the potential of Jaddaf into a thriving economic node of the creek.

THE UPCOMING CREEK TOWER AT FESTIVAL CITY ON THE SOUTH-EAST OF THE SITE IS A KEY DEVELOPEMENT AT THE WATERFRONT. DESIGNED BY SANTIAGO CALATRAVA, THE CREEK TOWER WOULD BECOME THE TALLEST BUILDING IN THE WORLD BY 2021, TRANSFORMING THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT INTO A VIBRANT ECONOMIC ZONE

METRO STATIONS ARE IMPORTANT MARKERS THAT INDICATE HIGH POPULATION DENSITIES AND CONNECTIVITIES. During this time there is a high influx of commuters rushing to work from residential areas to work spaces including art Jameel, hotels, power station and market centres.

There are high traffic levels around the second signal that connects the waterfront to the main highway and that is closer to workspaces.

There is still a high movement from the first signal to the second one due to work related activities. There is an increased flow to the DEWA power station and the roads around the hotels.

There is increased flow of traffic on the other lanes owing to people moving out of work spaces to residential areas or even outside Jaddaf. The First signal leading to the main highway and metro station is highly concentrated.

There is moderate levels of traffic on both the lanes as people move out of work to other parts of the city and tourists arriving at the hotels in the waterfront. There is a constant flow of traffic across all the traffic nodes

There are higher levels of communications within built structures during the early hours of the day. There is small movement of boats and water taxis. People tend to work and continue to communicate within their indoor spaces.

During the afternoon- evening people start moving outdoors for breaks, prayers to the local mosque, relaxing in the sculpture park near Art Jameel and swimming around the hotel premises .

In the evening times people start to move away from their buildings to the edges of water for walking, jogging, commuting and getting home by walk. There is an increased use of bridges and walkways at the edges near the hotels , art jameel and the residentail areas.

People tend to enjoy the waterfront as they start spending more time outdoors and indoors as well. There is a moderate flow of people to the docks for dinner cruises.

People also gather along the nodes such as restaurants, cafes, mini-markets and mosque

People work in large numbers especially in construction sites around the waterfront and also in the docks. This type is job is labour intensive with less interactions. High levels of noise is also recorded near the site owing to construction.

During the evenings, there are increased activities in the sculpture park, docks and also outside the residents. People tend to gather for informal meetings, pray , socialise, shop, play and enrich the outdoor spaces.

Art jameel happens to be the local information hub attracting people from other parts of the city opening from 10AM. Other key points of information happen to be meeting areas, hotel lobbys, reception desks and kiosk centres.

The waterbody acts as a major information exchange platform which connects people living in different parts along the creek. Water taxis, Dhow cruises and boats become vessels for exchange in terms of things that are tangible and intangible as well.

The tensegrity sturctures were compressed to map their edges to the nodes on site. This causes tension on the cables and hence it become elongated with irregular form. When two nodes with similar functions are close, the vertical elongation of the tensile model is more when compared to nodes away that gives more horizontal elongation. Roads with more widely spread nodes tend to express more communication in a linear manner, whereas Buildings with more vertical tensile geometry tend to have a communcation web on all the sides. The other edges of the tensile structure also can represent possible positions of future nodes

It is observed that the first traffic signal, art jameel and the mixed use buildings have high population densities due to the creation of new edges defined by ‘man-made’ islands. There is an irregular distribution of people in the newly tranformed area when compared to the potential of the original landform. This external force (density) makes the mesh deform and warp towards the areas with more densities. This causes wear and tear of the mesh as the unequal distribution continues to grow

Yet there lies a threshold where we cannot imagine beyond our six senses. Vast and lonely. Rich and variant. There lie deeper unknown mysteries beyond our boundaries that are extremely unimaginable, unreachable, unachievable, unseizable. Can ambitions help widen our human senses of knowledge beyond this boundary? Is this the holy grail?

Actions are needed to solidify words. Likewise, in order to explore the extraordinary, it is important that we create a space that fosters research beyond the thresholds. Likewise, an i ncubating Cosmo center is required to realize and strengthen our aims, sky-high ambitions and out of the world ideas. It must promote scientific experiments, humongous explorations, add to humanity’s scientific knowledge while seeking pride to the host space. It must serve as a place for inspiration, exchange of ideas and entertainment. A platform of higher learning, hosting forums and facilitating dialogues for the dissemination of new concepts and ideas.

The design should match UAE’s aims to be among the top countries worldwide in the field of space technology by the time the orbiter arrives at Mars in 2021. It is envisaged to be a hub of scientists, space agencies, government officials, designers, thinkers and mainly observers and Cosmo-enthusiasts. The internal and external space should foster research, learning, observing, testing, experimenting and production aiming to maximize ambition and minimizing human negligence and error. The operations including satellite imaging and data analysis services should help mitigate disasters in advance.

EXPERIMENT

The Construction of Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre- phase 2 at Al Jaddaf would be a second home to the UAE National Space Programme. The new ambitious waterfront developments in Jaddaf and the site needs to compliment this programme. The spaces need to incorporate knowledge transfer programmes and incubators to boost research among experts. Spaces for public exhibition displays and information sharing are key strategies to raise awareness about space science.

The idea is to utilize the key human interactions and behaviors associated with surfaces, nodes, meshes and networks. Strengthening these core factors through architecture and providing additional values to them is also one of the main challenges.

The site favours more information components on the south that would connect more to the neighbourhood and high concentration of communication and application on the north due to more available free spaces for experimentation, testing and easy vehicle access

NETWORKS tend to be stronger because they have nodes, paths and their ability to add-on surfaces as reinforcements. The aspect of hierarchy in the design of space station should defy the idea of hierarchy in people’s positions rather focus on prioritising order in its spaitial character and relationship. Since Information (as a result of application) initiates communication, the priority of spaces and their composition would primarily focus on precise information followed by efficient application, effective communcation and easing time pressure Key finding: Network was proven to be the strongest component followed by surfaces and meshes. Since application and information go hand-in hand, they relate to the spatial and strength characteristics outlined by network with dual components i.e. nodes + paths.

COMPOSITION OF TIME PRESSURE, COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION: Information centers with application nodes connect to time pressure across three points where people tend to enter. Communication surfaces spreads across underneath as one element that acts a common ground for exchange of ideas from invidual information and application centers.

THIS SHARP TURN EXPERIENCES CONGESTION THROUGH OUT THE DAY In order to reduce errors caused by time pressure in the area an alternative design approach is to boost pedestrain Movement across the three islands since adding an additional function would cause more congestion on site

Utilising the current movement patterns of people across edges of the islands, the solution is ease movement by connecting all the pedestrian bridges using a common single surface. This enables people to choose shortcuts and be able to commute quicker. Hence this space could be suitable for exhibtions that would aim to educate people from all walks of life everyday.

IMPACT OF SURFACES IN COMMUNICATION: Surfaces that have a direct visual impact on site have been extruded. This would mean direct visual contact from the voids of buildings and their associated functions. The design should aim to communicate information visually to the neighbourhood using these reference lines.

IMPACT OF EDGES IN COMMUNICATION: Edges that have higher communcation (possibly junction points/ nodes) have been extruded into the site. This would set the possible communication channels from the site to the neighbourhood.

NEGLIGENT SPACES: Spaces that are neglected by the process of communcation need to be the prime focus for the design. It should aim to create communication through these neglected spaces, so that communcation becomes effective and cohesive all through out the site.

There are higher concentrations of people using the edges of the hotel because of the boat jetty, swimming pools and shaded landscape areas.

Hence people/ tourists would favour walking to Art Jameel from this part of the context

THE IDEA - to understand the 3D boundaries in which each function can housed. Using the boundaries derived from site data, it is easier to compose forms based on their position and their formation of hybrid functions

NEGLECTED INFORMATION ZONES: THE DESIGN SHOULD ADDRESS PATHS THAT ARE NEGLECTED AND MUST SEEK VERTICALITY TO GAIN INFORMATION. THE SOURCES OF INFORMATION COULD BE FROM THE NEIGHBOURHOOD, SURROUNDING CITY CENTRES AND OUTER SPACE IMPACT OF GROUND EDGES IN INFORMATION: Reference lines have been extracted from the edges of possible nodes from the ground level of surrounding context. Connecting these lines with two centers on site would give reference lines with directions of potential information signals.

IMPACT OF VERTICAL EDGES IN INFORMATION: Mapping edges of nodes of varying heights gives data in all 3 axes. This data helps to understand parameters required to address the height of the building in order to successfully seek and provide information (case of observatories)

DESIGN 2: Voronoi based geometry: The node points from site deconstruction studies were input parameters for deriving the voronoi based minimum

surface model. Here the flat roof elements tend to radiate more. An analysis of the shading device in the planetrium is performed to understand to what extent can it provide cooler usable surfaces
