Designing JOURNEY IN ARCHITECTURE Architecture has always been a catalyst for growth of people, societies and cities alike. With its tangible and intangible impact across all domains, the imprint architecture leaves due to its multidimensional potential, is what sustains my ambition in evolving in such a profession.

This portfolio is a journey that I've been through during my 4 years of UG . Starting from a basic knowledge of what architecture is and four years of understanding how architecture works in our daily lives stuns me even now. At the end of 4 years of understanding architecture I admire its potential to shape people's conversations, mood, thinking, movement, connections, perhaps life.

the VOID

“Designing the in-between spaces” This project taught us about team-work, feasibility of designs and complexities in making a final full scale model. The challenge was to set the stage for creating a range of possibilities to allow the user to have a more personal and meaningful annotation to the created void, creating an interactive outdoor node within the urban landscape.

This outdoor exhibit was of softwood with a volume of 3m x 3m x 3m space with the designed object occupying a maximum volume of 2m x 2m x 2m within the 3m cubed space.

The design revolves around different kinds of shapes and sizes inspired from fractal geometry. The idea of creating structures uniformly but distinisctively was our reach, creating repitition that can interest all users.

The prototype features wooden frame structures, ceramic decorations (flexagons), LED lights and composite flooring.

Hence the design is open to interpretation and the installlation is highly interactive.

The hexagonal structures that can be flexed when tugged at play with light and shadow. The wooden structures on the sides allow the passage of sunlight and could infact provide shade.

Petrol Station + The aim is to to transform an ordinary filling station into an extraordinary landmark that improves the lives of the users and the staff considering factors like aesthetics, comfort, accessibility, safety and brand identity.

Research was conducted on two case studies that included gas galanta in Matuskovo, Slovakia and United oil gas station in Los Angeles, USA. After which the anthropometric studies related to petrol station was thoroughly studied.

A site visit to the Emarat Toufan petrol station near D90 Al Musalla road, Mankhool, Dubai was indeed a source of inspiration.

Project Adidas The objective was to create a part of a monumental mural which will tell the story of the significant achievements of the Adidas brand over its long history in the new offices in the d3 design district.

Our design reflects the milestones of Adidas from 1990 to 2000 with the help of symbols, logos, cartoons and appropriate colours.

1990- Germany wins football world cup (100% equipped with Adidas) 1994- The most profitable year (sales skyrocket) 1996- Adidas- The best sports brand 1998- Sponsors Germany, Argentina, Spain, Yugoslavia, Romania and France.

1999- Adidas celebrates 50th year.

The final design expresses all the milestones of Adidas under one roof. The choice of colours indicate the iconic image of this brand in our todays world.

The modified design below expresses the above ideas in a very minimalistic way.

Thus, the design of ' Amo-station' is adapted from the shape of an amoeba that can alter its shape. The bizarre structure and functionality of the design is a landmark that users would always admire.

The design utilises the additional space on the front side for advertisements and as display boards, thus satisfying the plus requirement.

In addition the design focuses more on comfort, safety, high visibility and great accessibility. The canopy plays with light and shadow, thsu makinbg the space brighter. The amoebic shape attracts the users, hence creating an indelible experience.

Smart House The objective was to create a smart house in Sustainable city, Dubai with complete respect of its surrounding environment and its context. The aspect of outdoor living and indoor- outdoor relationship have been prioritised. The house has a traditional characteristic modelled after Dubai's sand dunes and desert landscape with a contemporary styling.

Exploration of dynamic and creative forms with angular geometry inspired by dunes and natural terraces were key approaches of this exercise.

Cold formed steel sections is a thin steel strip (up to 3mm thickness) manufactured in coils of width about 1m. Through a process of roll formers, it takes many section shapes.

Insulation: Insulation walls would have all its components inbuilt and could be plugged in between the columns. This acts as a thick wall blocking harsh radiation and improving energy efficiency.

Doors/ Windows: This wall could have builtin components of either a sliding door or a window. This allows good indoor-outdoor connectivity and maximises the views.

Tokyo is a city made of houses, where the residential and commercial elements permeate the highly dense urbanfabric as the result of the economic growth of Japan overthe last half-century.

The project is in Shinjuki-ku, one of the 23 special districts of Tokyo and most important commercial and administrative center of the capital of Japan.

The Atelier Bow-Wow House is a remarkable work of Atelier Bow -Wow, Japanese masters of micro architecture, consisting of architects Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima Shun Takagi.

Atelier Bow-Wow is a Tokyo-based firm founded by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima in 1992. The pair’s interest lies ranges from architectural design and urban research to the creation of public artworks, which are produced based on the concept of “behaviorology.” Atelier BowWow has designed and built houses and public buildings mainly in Tokyo, but also in Europe and the US.

Atelier Bow Wow House

As it is difficult to maintain 3 places at the same time, including a laboratory at the university, Atelier Bow Wow was looking for a site for a building that was once the home and atelier, while at the same time have the opportunity to exploit its vast experience in converting challenging conditions in positive features for the houses.

The objective was to learn about how spaces relate to each other both horizontally and vertically. My fascination towards Japanese spatial techniques like TATAMi made me chose and explore Atelier Bow wow house in Japan, its spatial characteritic in a tight urban fabric.

A flag shape site is surrounded by buildings and only connected to the road by a narrow strip of land.

It is therefore hard to plan or construct on and it is cheaper.

The outside wall is covered with asphalt granules to retain water.

It’s fun thinking about the building as a rock that perspires, with a circulatory system which can be seen from the neighboring houses.

Vegetables are planted on top of this “rock”, and a tall tree with a bench at the entrance.

The manifesto of the institute adopts a DIDACTIC and SOCRATIC approach.

Learning from the building spaces, consistent scientific approach, inquiry, instruction and application become inegral part of the trans-disciplinary design process.

1 DIDATIC: intended to teach, particularly in having moral instruction as an ulterior motive.

SOCRATIC: This method relates to inquiry and thinking as means of obtaining information.

BRANCH

The concept is about the play with operative verb- Branch. The interplay of different spaces spread like a branch helps create spaces that play with verticality. Hence addressing the trend of the cityscape.

The concept is about the play with the roofs. It is conceived as a public installation where people could access the roof, play and enjoy views.

It is inspired from Snohetta’s Norway opera house which connects the sea and the city.

HARMONY: The right balance between two elements creates a harmony that results in the most favorable outcome

The objective was to design and dedicate a NISD for the nation so as to promote the idea of the value of understanding architectural spatial characteristic in our everyday life. The institute seeks to embrace the concept of exchange and experiment that forms a vital part of learning, hence the spaces also respond to these phenomenon

0 -1 The Criss-cross model was developed keeping in mind the trend on the natural pattern of the formation of UAE. It seeks to bring in different land and built forms into the design language with play in verticality and adjusting to different views around the site.

The Production spaces are oriented very closely along the academic spaces in order to merge the design and production processes. It focuses on creating more shaded outdoor spaces and underground spaces that could help retaining more ground area.

La mer The idea here is to understand how the natural landforms of UAE when put together could create a pattern that could influence the design process. Each feature of the landscape represent a particular function - sea (exchange) , cities (experiment) , deserts (explorations) and mountains (viewpoins). Through this layering of landforms we could clearly understand the general context at which La mer exists - A connection between the land and the sea.

In this iteration the exhibition space in the middle acts as a central node that not only helps in circulation but carries the function of its adjacent spaces too.

An amalgamation of functionsproduction, relaxation, teaching and interactions.

The operative verbs- branch and expand have been extensively used in formation of these spaces. The TML (Technological and Materials Labratory) - a key production workshop has aligned closely with the learning spaces to help students design and build simultaneously.

On the first floor, the inersection of two masses create the hybrid spaces which could be used as viewpoints overlooking the exhibition space and can house production and learning spaces too.

The high exhibition space in the middle creates shade on the north west side that houses a rooftop amphitheatre.

By naming spaces into two main categories, the users tend to utilise that space out of their own interest. This leads to the spaces offering more affordability and hence improving prouductivity. The inter-twining of exchange and experimental spaces always stimulates students to design and build simultaneously. Masses overlooking multiple viewpoints could act as a visual link to the adjacent points of interest.

Negligence of the UNSEEN NEGLIGENCE CRISIS: My thesis and a personally attached one. Learnings through events from Fukushima, the manifesto aimed to create spaces that defy human errors caused by negligence and aim to focus on the shift from errors to innovation

#UNDERSTANDING CRISIS THROUGH 2D

MANIFESTO: NEGLIGENCE OF THE UNSEEN NEGLIGENCE There is an ancient disease that is still found in larger figures today: negligence. You, me, we fall prey in the web of negligence in every action that we do. A small spark out of negligence can wipe out the whole lot of existence. In simple sense we sometimes neglect the basic existence of the context that hosts us and neglect the negligence of others who live along with us, experience with us.

We neglect the things that we see, don’t see, co-exist, upcoming, past and the present. Our negligence has led some mysteries grow in greater scales that we never thought of like the Triple disaster of Fukushima. Earthquake, Tsunami and nuclear fallout. The wrath of nature, fury of the affected, tensions of the unseen. It is you. You choose whether your negligence jeopardizes the harmony of being whole. Ultimately, our collective negligence disrespects the harmony created by our own creator. Abusing the gifts of the giver is abusing the giver of the gift.

Negligence here, negligence there, self, else.

The thought of having a perfectly planned space/ infrastructures/ designs can manipulate our senses leading to fatal human error. Errors can occur due to time pressure, communications, exchange of information or while performing an application. It should be remembered that errors due to negligence can be a result of something accidental or due to lack of focus or even in worst cases, purposeful.

This disease is weaved in our actions that we don’t tend to feel. The invisible feel can lead to an accident. An accident that can lead to a catastrophe, A catastrophe into attention. Attention into a crisis. Crisis into a destruction. Destructions to losses. Losses to disharmony. Disharmony into distress. Suddenly like calm after a storm, peace after a war, night after a day, life continues after distress. Moments of happiness, pleasure, ecstasy, mere distractions, engulf our inner space that we let grow our negligence in our own space. Our own house, own communities, cities.

The definition of a space can never be the same after our negligence impacts it. Irretrievable spatial forms after destruction. Oh negligence! Neglecting the negligence is vital. Resistance and responsibility are vital. Negligence peaks when we have ‘Everything’ at our disposal. To collectively avoid any unforeseen disasters, avoid negligence caused by human error, not hold back the spirit of ambition that fosters innovation.

Re-adapting and reconfiguring have become the after-effect of a disaster without realizing the origins of the crisis. We look at a generic sense with a lack of focus on specific entities. Each element has unique characters in a network of ecosystem. We need to understand failures on individual entities and provide tailor made solutions on individual details and their impacting spaces since each of them have differing scales and geometries.

Pre-assessment of human interventions on nature is needed. Foreseeing the unseen disasters through experimentation and deeply understanding thresholds, tolerances is needed. We need to compliment natural healing.

The aim is to make the host space pioneer to revive itself, provide refuge, solve its crisis, provide space for extra growth and eventually foster re-humanization of architecture. Human agency is always thought as an aspect of uncertainty and unpredictability. This makes us view it as a destructive force. The alternative is to view human agency, us, as an advantage– a means by which we overcome risks and take advantage of new opportunities. Analyzing human behaviors, applications, trends across time frames and converting them into design parameters would surely help us adopt precise solutions based on the time of disaster. Architecture is key to revive broken surfaces, nodes, networks, their associated spaces and users hence advancing them far beyond their former glory.

With high levels of forces, the objects are no longer resilient hence they start breaking and falling apart.

There is chaos and disharmony, and the change is hihly irreversible

The story of the evolution of a surface starting from a point has been portrayed in a series. A vnetwork of static lines and nodes emerges which then attract meshes as enclosures. This vulnerable network slowly evolves into 3 strut tensegrity structures that are more elastic and resilient to sudden shocks/ impacts. Structures begin to form which adds to increased protection. As structures grow opposing forces tend to emerge. Firstly in X and Y directions resulting in skewing of meshes that eventually fail.

Movements in X, Y and Z directions result in tear of surfaces and meshes whereas networks stay intact due to its elasticity. In the last stage, where forces become intolerable, the integral structure fails as a whole resulting in destruction and then recovery.

Materials that are larger in scale tend to warp and collapse easier. Meshes being more in number in a unit area skew easily towards one direction when forces are applied. Networks of huge scales work well depending on the strength of nodes

Elements made out of simple geometry like meshes with weaves of strings tend to fail with little force. Networks with interconnected elements along the nodes help form a stronger bond hence better stability

Strength of materials play a vital role in resiliency. Elements wth fabric like formation tend to experience easy sliding movements across each structural elements hence disrupting their structural integrity. Materials that are reinforced or glued (solids) perform well with less motion within their arrangement

Structures that form a triangular lattice tend to perform extremely well due to its equal force distribution (tensegrity). Geometries like meshes with its weak weaving pattern tend to slide within their own framework.

Surfaces with lesser voids also experience more tension resulting in punctures.

The aim is to use human agencies (often thoght of as a destructive force) as design parameters in order to boost innovation by minimizing human errors across the four scenarios

AMBITION FOR COSMOVATION Conversion of human errors as advantages requires not only pre-assessment but also the application of processing the right data stream at the right time. We may think of our past experiences as our lead, but foreseeing and pre-assessing of specific details would help tackle what the future may unfold. This would help us reduce human errors and hence aim higher, higher and even higher.

People work in large numbers especially in construction sites around the waterfront and also in the docks. This type is job is labour intensive with less interactions. High levels of noise is also recorded near the site owing to construction.

During the evenings, there are increased activities in the sculpture park, docks and also outside the residents. People tend to gather for informal meetings, pray , socialise, shop, play and enrich the outdoor spaces.

Art jameel happens to be the local information hub attracting people from other parts of the city opening from 10AM. Other key points of information happen to be meeting areas, hotel lobbys, reception desks and kiosk centres.

The waterbody acts as a major information exchange platform which connects people living in different parts along the creek. Water taxis, Dhow cruises and boats become vessels for exchange in terms of things that are tangible and intangible as well.

INFORMATION

The idea is to utilize the key human interactions and behaviors associated with surfaces, nodes, meshes and networks. Strengthening these core factors through architecture and providing additional values to them is also one of the main challenges.

The Construction of Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre- phase 2 at Al Jaddaf would be a second home to the UAE National Space Programme. The new ambitious waterfront developments in Jaddaf and the site needs to compliment this programme. The spaces need to incorporate knowledge transfer programmes and incubators to boost research among experts. Spaces for public exhibition displays and information sharing are key strategies to raise awareness about space science.

A platform of higher learning, hosting forums and facilitating dialogues for the dissemination of new concepts and ideas.

The design should match UAE’s aims to be among the top countries worldwide in the field of space technology by the time the orbiter arrives at Mars in 2021. It is envisaged to be a hub of scientists, space agencies, government officials, designers, thinkers and mainly observers and Cosmo-enthusiasts. The internal and external space should foster research, learning, observing, testing, experimenting and production aiming to maximize ambition and minimizing human negligence and error. The operations including satellite imaging and data analysis services should help mitigate disasters in advance.

Populous settlements around the creek region include Deira, Bur Dubai, oud metha, healthcare city and Festival city. The site is surrounded by many waterfront developments that anticipate the creek harbour that houses the next tallest structure (creek tower) in Dubai. Waterfront developments include Dubai Design District, healthcare city 2 and culture village phase 2. The rise of new highly focused development projects would boost the potential of Jaddaf into a thriving economic node of the creek.

THE UPCOMING CREEK TOWER AT FESTIVAL CITY ON THE SOUTH-EAST OF THE SITE IS A KEY DEVELOPEMENT AT THE WATERFRONT. DESIGNED BY SANTIAGO CALATRAVA, THE CREEK TOWER WOULD BECOME THE TALLEST BUILDING IN THE WORLD BY 2021, TRANSFORMING THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT INTO A VIBRANT ECONOMIC ZONE

IMPACT OF VERTICAL EDGES IN INFORMATION: Mapping edges of nodes of varying heights gives data in all 3 axes. This data helps to understand parameters required to address the height of the building in order to successfully seek and provide information (case of observatories)

DESIGN 1: using triangular geometry: the radiation analysis helped understand areas of higher radiation which can be adressed by choosing appropriate materials on them. This traingular geomtry has been derived from the language of nodes, edges and paths wherein the triangular truss elements manifest as walls, roof, skylights, structure and floors

DESIGN 2: Voronoi based geometry: The node points from site deconstruction studies were input parameters for deriving the voronoi based minimum surface model. Here the flat roof elements tend to radiate more. An analysis of the shading device in the planetrium is performed to understand to what extent can it provide cooler usable surfaces

# THE IDEA HERE IS TO CONNECT VARIOUS FUNCTIONS TO ITS CORRESPONDANT NODE POINTS ON SITE. THE PEDESTRAIN + VEHICULAR MOVEMENT LINE (RED) MANIFESTING AS MOVEMENT STARTEGY AND NODES TO EDGES LINES (BLUE) MANIFESTING AS FUNCTIONS ORIGINATING AT NODES AND AN OVERALL MESH CONNECTING THE WHOLE GEOMETRY. THE TRIANGULAR GEOEMETRY WAS CHOSEN BECAUSE EACH ELEMENT RELATES TO ANOTHER WITH ITS TRIANGULAR PROFILE AND THE SUITABILITY OF A TRUSS STRUCTURE MADE THIS AN INEVITABLE CHOICE

# SPECIFIC DERIVATIVE CONDITIONS: These conditions of applying movement paths, static, dynamic and outdoor functions using nodes, lines, paths, networks indicate the whole idea of how the intagible language tarnslates itself into 3D tangible architectural structures and forms.
