Message from the President
Dear Rivier Community,
It is with profound gratitude and pride that I reflect on the accomplishments and milestones that have defined our 20242025 academic year. This edition of Rivier Today captures the spirit of our mission and the enduring impact of a Rivier education.
This May, we celebrated the University’s 90th Commencement and conferred degrees upon the largest graduating class in our history—1,092 students prepared to lead lives of service and purpose. We were honored to welcome Mr. William E. Conway, Jr., esteemed philanthropist and Co-Founder of The Carlyle Group, as our Commencement speaker and recipient of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. His transformational support through the Conway Nursing Scholarship has empowered our students and strengthened the regional healthcare workforce.
In alignment with our Go Boldly 2024–2030 strategic plan, Rivier has introduced new academic programs in Artificial Intelligence, Environmental Studies, and Human Services, as well as an accelerated bachelor’s in Nursing, furthering our commitment to innovation and workforce readiness. The renovation of Benoit Hall and the launch of Raider Crossing in the Dion Center exemplify our investment in student-centered learning environments and the student experience.
We also celebrate the generosity of our alumni and benefactors, whose support through the Altiora et Meliora Legacy Society and our record-breaking Day of Giving ensures that future generations will continue to thrive at Rivier.
As we celebrate all that we have accomplished, I remain deeply grateful for your continued engagement and support. Together, we advance Rivier’s mission to transform hearts and minds to serve the world.
With every good wish,
Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM President
Supporting Our Troops
Members of the Rivier community were recognized at the Campus Compact for New Hampshire Presidents’ Awards luncheon, which celebrates civic engagement efforts happening across the state.
One of this year’s honorees was Holiday Cards for Our Military Challenge, a nonprofit founded by Dr. Laura Landerman-Garber of Hollis, N.H. to send handwritten holiday cards to military serving abroad.
The organization was recognized for its growing partnership with Rivier through a collaboration with Emily Daversa, Director of Campus Ministry and Service Learning, and the University’s Campus Ministry Club.
“This initiative has become a passion project and has increased awareness of what can be done with a simple gift from the heart,” says Dr. LandermanGarber. “Working with Rivier students has been a real highlight, and each year, the partnership grows.”
The holiday card challenge sends thousands of handwritten cards annually to deployed service members, veterans, and military families from across the country. The Holiday Cards for Our Military Challenge team shared how meaningful it has been to work alongside and mentor Rivier students.
Through the volunteer work of Rivier students, more than 20,000 cards have been prepared for shipping with close to 1,000 cards written for service members.

New campus store, dining experience to open in Dion Center
Rivier will open a new retail and dining space in the Dion Center this fall, repurposing the former bookstore following the transition to online textbook ordering through eCampus.com. The existing facility will be renovated to create a modern, student-focused space named Raider Crossing.
Operated by Sodexo, the University’s dining services provider, Raider Crossing will feature Rivier-branded merchandise, apparel, convenience items, and modern gathering space, as well as an eatery offering a casual dining experience.
Construction is underway with plans for a grand opening in the fall semester. In addition to serving the campus community, the store’s central location will also benefit campus visitors, providing a convenient spot to purchase University merchandise during
Admissions tours and other oncampus events.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to creating a vibrant, student-centered environment,” says Dr. Hank Parkinson, Vice President for Student Experience. “The new space will serve as a hub for connection, engagement, and convenience.”

Sports broadcaster Alanna Rizzo headlines Sport Management Summit
For the second consecutive year, Rivier hosted the Nashua Sport Management Summit, in partnership with the Nashua Silver Knights. Held in March, the summit was open to all high school and college students interested in pursuing a career in the sports industry to learn from and build relationships with industry leaders. More than 300 were registered for the event, reflecting strong interest in the sport management field.
Following the keynote address by seven-time Emmy Award-winning television sports reporter and host Alanna Rizzo, attendees joined sessions in which panelists covered a variety of topics, including partnerships, business intelligence and analytics, recruiting, sales and service, event management, and communications.
A longtime contributor to MLB Network’s “High Heat with Christopher Russo,” Rizzo previously served as an in-game reporter and host for SportsNet LA, covering the Los Angeles Dodgers during the team’s World Series appearances in
2017, 2018, and 2020. She continues to share her expertise on the Foul Territory platform, appearing on “Dodgers Territory” and “Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal.”
“The event offers high school and college students a unique opportunity to connect with professionals from across the sports industry,” says Dr. Amir Toosi, Dean of Business and Security Studies. Students gained valuable insights into diverse career paths within sport management. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Nashua Silver Knights for next year’s summit.”
Students networked with top executives and hiring managers from organizations across New England at the Career and Networking Fair, including representatives from the Boston Bruins, Portland Sea Dogs, Connecticut Sun, and the New England Sports Network. Other companies such as CBS Sports, BSN Sports, and The Kraft Group attended, providing a wide range of career opportunities for students to explore.
6 Rivier community comes together to give back at a record level on annual Day of Giving
Alumni, parents, Board members, faculty, staff, and friends joined together to support Rivier students on the University’s Day of Giving in April. On this year’s annual fundraising day, the University reached a new high with more than $137,000 raised for the Rivier University Fund, scholarships, and the Raiders athletics program. Every gift creates access to scholarships, technology, and innovation that enhances the learning experience for Rivier students in the classroom and beyond. The support from more than 450 donors this year will enable each student to recognize and reach their full potential.
“The impact of each gift on our Day of Giving and throughout the year is far reaching,” says Karen Cooper, Vice President for University Advancement. “It’s rewarding to see the community come together to make an impact on the educational experience of our students and to know that their generosity will make a difference for generations to come.”
Rivier students shared their sincere message of gratitude in a video that can be viewed at rivier.edu/thanks.
Rivier launches new in-demand academic programs
The University remains committed to addressing the evolving needs of today’s workforce by developing innovative programs in technology, health professions, and the sciences to empower students through the Go Boldly 2024-2030 strategic plan.
B.S., M.S. in Artificial Intelligence
The University launched Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Artificial Intelligence (AI), emphasizing real-world, ethical applications in robotics, healthcare, finance, and manufacturing.
“These dynamic programs align with the growing demand for AI professionals across all sectors,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President. “Graduates will be wellprepared to harness AI technologies to ethically address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.”
Demand for AI graduates will continue to grow as new technologies are developed to process large amounts of data, improve machine learning, and enhance cybersecurity.
In recent years, Rivier has demonstrated a strong commitment to expanding its technology-focused academic programs. The University now offers degree programs in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity Management/Leadership at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
“Rivier’s location in Nashua’s hightech corridor gives our students a built-in edge,” says Dr. John Glossner, Director of Computer Science Programs. “Our new AI programs will immerse them in the technology transforming every industry. With project-based courses and close ties to regional employers, our graduates step into the workforce ready to deliver value on day one.”
Accelerated B.S. in Nursing
Designed for individuals who have already earned a bachelor’s degree in another discipline and are seeking an expedited route to a nursing career in as little as 16 months, Rivier has introduced an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN). The fast-track program offers a rigorous yet efficient pathway to RN licensure, addressing the critical demand for qualified nurses, both locally and nationally.
“The launch of our accelerated bachelor’s program is a direct response to the urgent need for skilled nurses in the healthcare industry,” says Dr. Paula Williams, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Nursing and Health Professions. “With the projected retirement of nearly 900,000 nurses by 2027 and the increasing demand for healthcare professionals, this program provides an effective solution to transition into the nursing profession.”
The program maintains the same high standards, accreditation, and educational outcomes as Rivier’s traditional four-year BSN program. By leveraging prior academic achievements, students can complete their degree in a shorter time frame without compromising quality.
Graduates of the program will be eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), preparing them for immediate entry into the workforce.
B.A. in Environmental Studies and Sustainability
The Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and Sustainability program provides students with the tools to critically examine and address environmental issues using an interdisciplinary approach. Drawing from natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities, the curriculum is designed to foster a comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between human activity and the environment.
B.A.
in Human Services
Also interdisciplinary, the Bachelor of Arts in Human Services program will prepare graduates for careers in the social service sector by integrating coursework in social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, and business. The curriculum emphasizes practical knowledge and the development of skills necessary for identifying and addressing the needs of individuals, families, and communities.

Mary’s nursing education was made possible due to the generous financial support she received from the Joanne and William Conway Nursing Scholarship. Mary is one of more than 80 Conway Scholars studying at Rivier during the 2024-2025 academic year.
Established by Mr. William E. Conway, Jr. and his late wife, Mrs. Joanne Barkett Conway, the Bedford Falls Foundation awarded Rivier a $2 million grant to launch the Joanne and William Conway Nursing Scholarship. Rivier celebrated its 90th Commencement on May 11 at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass., awarding 1,092 degrees to associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree graduates, setting another record with the largest class in the University’s history.
The ceremony highlighted the power of kindness and service to others with the University honoring Mr. William E. Conway, Jr., philanthropist and Nashua native, as its Commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient.
Serving as Co-Founder and CoExecutive Chairman of The Carlyle Group, one of the world’s largest and most successful private equity firms, Mr. Conway’s dedication to excellence and innovation have earned him a reputation as a leader in global finance and investment.
Mr. Conway shared how the Bedford Falls Foundation, established by he and his late wife, Mrs. Joanne Barkett Conway, began supporting nursing scholarships in the wake of the
financial crisis to recognize the impact of compassionate, skilled healthcare professionals. Recently, the foundation awarded Rivier a $2 million grant to launch the Joanne and William Conway Nursing Scholarship.
In his address to graduates, Mr. Conway emphasized that life is filled with difficult decisions and that we often face moral choices in small, everyday moments. He shared personal stories of recognizing and acting on the needs of others during his time in Washington, D.C., moments that changed his perspective on compassion and responsibility.
“Suppose a small act of kindness, without any anticipation of getting any reward, made someone else’s day one percent better,” says Mr. Conway. “Or suppose somebody helped to make your day one percent better. Maybe it would make all the difference.”
Rivier graduates Mary Festa (B.S. in Nursing) and Natalie Zacpal (Doctor of Psychology in Counseling and School Psychology) spoke on behalf of undergraduate and graduate students.
Festa reflected on the supportive environment at Rivier, inside and outside of the classroom. Sharing her experiences, Festa spoke about serving local and global communities across cultures through building homes and providing healthcare. She expressed how pivotal the University has been to furthering her education and ability to serve others.
Zacpal shared the highs and lows of achieving her doctoral degree, reflecting on the many challenges she faced throughout her journey. From grueling exams to late-night study sessions, the path was not without its hurdles. She emphasized that the support and camaraderie of her classmates made it all more manageable, always finding strength in one another during their toughest moments.

He served UniFirst Corporation for more than 35 years with progressive leadership roles including Executive Vice President, a position he retired from in 2025.
Michael Croatti
MBA 2009
With a lifelong commitment to helping others, Michael understands the positive impact of a Rivier education and is dedicated to giving back to the University that shaped his life.
What makes Rivier University so meaningful to you and your family?
Michael: Rivier is very special to me and my family. I am a proud graduate, as are my son and daughter-in-law. The University has enhanced our business acumen while helping us grow personally and professionally. I have hired so many great, talented graduates throughout my business career. The Sisters, especially Sister Helene [Cote, pm ‘73], hold a special place in my heart and Sister Paula inspires me, both in business and in life.
What motivates your continued involvement on Rivier’s Board of Trustees and what does this service mean to you personally?
Michael: The Board is a well-functioning and diverse group coming from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I get a charge from their knowledge and experiences working together to form new ideas and solutions. The Board is instrumental in implementing the University’s goals, which is very fulfilling. I am very proud of what Rivier has accomplished under Sister Paula’s leadership. We are truly transforming hearts and minds through our work to support the University’s mission and vision.
Through your leadership at UniFirst, you have actively encouraged employees to pursue both undergraduate and graduate degrees at Rivier, while also recruiting alumni. What qualities or skill sets make Rivier graduates especially valuable to local businesses?
Michael: At UniFirst, I have encouraged up-and-coming managers to continue their education by earning advanced
BY GRIFFIN SPENCER
degrees at Rivier. To date, more than 10 employees have gone through Rivier’s MBA program, and two general managers are currently enrolled in the program. The education is so comprehensive, and the curriculum can be applied in business immediately. I believe Rivier graduates have a strong work ethic and are responsible, upstanding men and women. That is something I cannot teach.
You and your wife, Deborah, have generously included Rivier in your estate plans and are members of the Altiora et Meliora Legacy Society. What inspired you to support the University in this meaningful and lasting way?
Michael: Rivier has been so inspirational to my wife and I. We have made plans to continue to support the goal of “higher and better” through our estate plans. We have bequeathed $1 million to the University. We felt this was a way we could be a part of the University’s success for many years to come and ensure future generations can achieve an outstanding education.
Your family has established the Michael ’09 MBA and Deborah Croatti Scholarship to support undergraduate students pursuing a business degree, particularly those who exemplify leadership and strong ethics. What does it mean to you to invest in the development of these future leaders?
Michael: The scholarship is our way of giving back. Our only requirement for the recipient is to have financial need and to study business. We receive selfsatisfaction from the thank you cards we receive from students, knowing we have been able to make a difference in a young
student’s life while also easing the costs of their college journey a bit.
The renovation of Sylvia Trottier Hall has had a significant impact on the educational experience at Rivier, and a conference room within the Division of Business and Security Studies bears your family’s name. How do you hope your support will shape the academic journey of Rivier students?
Michael: Through my MBA program, I learned how to apply classroom lessons to real world applications. The students I have recruited from Rivier have been ready for the business world and are flourishing at UniFirst in roles of sales, sales management, quality control, and service and location management. I hope the conference room in our name continues this tradition for our future students and they collaborate and exchange ideas in this new space.
Your generosity has played a vital role in advancing Rivier’s mission to transform hearts and minds. Could you share why giving back to others is such a deeply held priority for you and your family?
Michael: Deborah and I strongly believe you never forget where you come from. When we started out, we did not have much. We had work ethics and were willing to work long hours. We made sacrifices, and we saved. When our lives became more comfortable, we always wanted to give back to our community and help those who are starting to climb the ladder of success themselves and become great future leaders. Philanthropy is our expression of thanks and gratitude. That is our family legacy.

Rivier’s season included a programrecord 15-game winning streak and one of the nation’s top 10 scoring defenses, allowing fewer than eight goals per game. Over the last four seasons, the Raiders have posted a 54-17 record (.761) and have won 73 of 101 games (.723) since 2019.
Grumblatt wraps up historic women’s basketball career
After a dominant season for the Raiders women’s basketball team, Lyric Grumblatt earned spots on the D3hoops.com All-Region 1 First Team as well as the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) AllRegion Second Team. These regional honors follow her third Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Year nod.
Grumblatt played a pivotal role in leading Rivier to its best season since the 2013-14 campaign. Leading the GNAC in scoring with 26.3 points per game, Grumblatt amassed 683 total points, the most in a single season in program history.
Along the way, she surpassed head coach Deanna Purcell ‘15 to become Rivier’s all-time leading scorer and also etched her name into the conference’s history books, becoming the GNAC’s alltime leading scorer with 2,523 career points.
Additionally, Grumblatt capped off her career as the program’s all-time leader in field goals made (864) and threepointers made (304). She also ranks second in steals (275), third in rebounds (804), and fourth in assists (281).
Harvey Woods Field to serve as home field for baseball
For the foreseeable future, the Raiders baseball team will play its home games at Harvey Woods Field, located on the campus of the former Daniel Webster College. The move from Holman Stadium provides increased scheduling flexibility for both games and practices.
“The University’s administration is deeply committed to the student-athlete experience,” says Jonathan Harper, Director of Athletics. “Rivier will
continue to dedicate resources toward the maintenance and improvement of Harvey Woods Field, ensuring our baseball program has a high-quality home facility to call its own.”
Generous support from local businesses has further elevated the field’s condition, benefiting both Rivier student-athletes and fans. The Raiders closed the 2025 season with a strong 5-1 record at their new home.
Winter sports conclude with All-Conference accolades
In addition to Grumblatt’s GNAC Player of the Year accolade and her First Team All-GNAC honor, several student-athletes on Rivier’s winter and spring sports teams earned AllConference nods from their respective conferences.
Matthew McCloskey of the Rivier men’s volleyball team earned Second Team All-Conference accolades from the GNAC, recording a .243 hitting percentage to rank within the top-10 in the conference.
Kyler Bosse was named to the GNAC Third Team after the men’s basketball season, averaging 20.2 points per game to rank fourth in the conference while shooting nearly 50% from the floor across 23 starts. He helped the Raiders
achieve back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2013-14.
The Rivier women’s ice hockey program had four members earn Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) postseason awards, highlighted by first-year head coach Marykate Drinkwater and sophomore forward Rebecca McKelvey winning major awards.
Drinkwater was tabbed the Coach of the Year, while McKelvey was named the MASCAC Player of the Year and also landed on the All-Conference First Team. Senior goaltender Rachel Hinkley and junior defender Molly Dukesherer were each named to the All-Conference Second Team.
Spring sports stand out in 2025
Under second-year head coach Noelle Sass, Rivier softball had its best season since 2012, finishing 22-15 overall and 13-3 in GNAC play. Graduate student Hannah Muchemore led the team in her first collegiate season, batting .405 with 51 hits and 36 RBI. The Raiders earned the No. 1 seed in the GNAC North Division and hosted a portion of the conference tournament.
Women’s lacrosse posted its second consecutive winning season, finishing 8-6 overall with a program-record 7-4 GNAC record. Seniors Sarah Lachance and Cassie Hemmerdinger earned First Team All-GNAC honors. Lachance led the team with 46 goals, while Hemmerdinger contributed 48 ground balls, 41 draw controls, and 39 caused turnovers.
The Raiders baseball team returned to the GNAC playoffs for the second time in three seasons and earned its first postseason win since 2007 with a 9-2 victory over Lasell in the opening game. Ty Baker set a program record with seven saves on the season, while Jake O’Connor ranked among league leaders in strikeouts, averaging nearly one per inning.
