HMHEARTS & MINDS SERVING THE WORLD

Message from the President

Dear Friends of Rivier,

The 90th anniversary of Rivier’s founding provides the opportunity to both glance backward and look beyond as the word “impact” infuses this issue of Rivier Today.

The anniversary theme of Go Boldly is demonstrated by Rivier’s expansion from its first graduating class of seven to the May 2023 Commencement celebration awarding more than 700 degrees at the doctoral, master’s, baccalaureate, and associate degree levels. This year’s Commencement honorees represent distinct contributions in healthcare, learning, faith, and justice. The University continues to recognize the long-lasting impact of a Rivier education through the personal stories highlighted by our Alumni Achievement Awards.

Rivier’s commitment to its Latin motto Altiora et Meliora – Higher and Better is represented by continuing accreditation by the New England Commission of Higher Education, the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, and national recognition as one of the top 50 private school nursing programs across the country. Rivier students and the regional workforce will benefit from new degree programs in Exercise Science and Adult Gerontology – Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, as well as the transition of Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling graduate degrees to an online modality.

As Rivier continues its anniversary year celebrations and boldly looks ahead to the future, it does so with a spirit of gratitude for you, our alumni and friends, to the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, and to the scores of faculty and staff throughout the years who have served students. Thank you for your generous support of Rivier’s endeavors fulfilling its mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.

Sincerely,

Rivier nursing students

“socking it to homelessness”

Kera Kelly ’20, an RN at Lowell Community Health Center and an adjunct faculty member at Rivier, successfully partnered with a nationally recognized apparel company to help students from her alma mater make a difference in the community.

Crafting a written appeal to Bombas, a New York City-based business whose mission is to assist those experiencing homelessness, Kelly was able to secure a donation of 500 pairs of socks for distribution to the local community in Nashua. Citing the harshness of the New Hampshire winters and how nursing students frequently encounter community members with holes in their shoes, feet with blisters and other ailments, Kelly described the vital work, including preventative health screenings, performed as part of the Nursing curriculum.

“With each student and community interaction, it is our hope that we can make a difference,” said Kelly. “Perhaps we can detect a wound and help prevent an adverse outcome; perhaps we can provide some warmth, or perhaps, maybe just a smile and kind banter is all someone needs.”

Rivier accreditation— a testament to excellence in higher education

The University has completed its decennial accreditation review by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE; formerly the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, NEASC).

“Rivier has been successfully accredited since 1948, assuring our students receive a quality education,” shared Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President. “NECHE accreditation is recognized by other colleges and employers. Students who attend NECHE-accredited institutions can be confident that they will receive a transformative educational experience that prepares them for a successful future.”

The University-wide, 18-month process focused on assessment and projections addressing the Commission’s nine Standards for Accreditation including areas of mission, academic programs, student life and institutional resources with a focus on continual improvement. The NECHE team visited the campus in the fall and were impressed that the Rivier mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world is widely embraced

2

and informs decision-making at every level. Based on the Commission’s assessment Rivier’s accreditation has been continued with a typical fifth year report due in fall 2027.

“Accreditation review is a rigorous and challenging process that requires a comprehensive examination of all aspects of an institution's operations, from academic programs to administrative systems,” says Dr. Brian Ernsting, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Receiving reaccreditation is a tremendous achievement that reflects the dedication and hard work of faculty, staff, and administrators in upholding the highest standards of excellence in higher education.”

In their final report, the NECHE evaluation team noted, “We congratulate Rivier University on its 90th anniversary celebration, and we share the institution’s confidence that, with the continued support of an engaged Board combined with capable leadership and wellqualified, dedicated faculty and staff, the University is well-positioned to continue achieving its mission and addressing its challenges well into the future.”

The University sincerely thanks the alumni, faculty, staff, Board members, parents, and friends, who made a gift on this year’s annual Day of Giving in April. In just one day, the University raised $115,000 for the Rivier University Fund, student scholarships, and the athletics program through the first-ever Raiders Challenge.

Each gift provides opportunities that foster growth, access to technology that brings the classroom to life, and inspiration that helps Rivier students reach their full potential.

In a video message, Student Government Association President Olivia Boucher ’23 shared, “Our success is your success, and we wouldn’t be able to do it without you!”

Celebrating Earth Day with a tree planting 3

Rivier held a tree planting in April as part of its annual Earth Day celebrations. Faculty, staff, and students gathered for the planting of a Legacy Sugar Maple in honor of the University’s 90th anniversary on the Chapel Quad near Madeleine Hall.

Led by Grounds Manager Ryan McCaughey, the planting is a step towards receiving Tree Campus USA designation from the National Arbor Day Foundation. The Tree Campus Higher Education program was founded in 2008 to provide a framework for colleges and universities to grow their green spaces, achieve national recognition, and create a campus their students and staff are proud of. The organization recognizes that trees and green spaces are an integral part of the college experience. They make campuses more livable, healthy, and beautiful, benefiting students and the environment as a whole.

“This tree planting is a reminder that the Earth is our common home to be cultivated through conservation, stewardship, and a recognition that creation is a gift of the Creator,” said Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President.

The tree planting was followed by an Earth Day Fair where students shared environmental projects with the campus community.

New online nurse practitioner and graduate counseling programs will launch in September

MSN and Post-Master’s Certificate: Adult Gerontology–Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP)

The Division of Nursing and Health Professions has added a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and a Post-Master’s Certificate in Adult Gerontology – Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP) to its nationally and regionally ranked degree offerings.

“As the U.S. population ages, the need increases for nurse practitioners who specialize in adult acute care,” says Dr. Paula Williams, Dean of the Division of Nursing and Health Professions. “The MSN in Adult Gerontology – Acute Care Nurse Practitioner programs will prepare a new generation of practitioners to fill this need and enable current nurse practitioners to expand their certifications and practices.”

AG-ACNPs treat patients ages 17 and older, providing long-term care of patients with acute and chronic health problems. They assess patients’ health conditions, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and develop and oversee treatment plans.

Coursework for the programs will be completed online, and students will come to campus for a total of 8-10 days for intensives, where they will meet and interact with their professors and peers. MSN degree and Post-Master’s Certificate graduates will be prepared to sit for the national AG-ACNP certification examination.

M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

M.Ed. in School Counseling

In response to the rising demand for behavioral health professionals, Rivier has launched online master’s degrees in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. Previously available only in an on-campus format, the new online counseling programs will expand educational access and opportunities for students and prepare graduates for licensure within their respective disciplines.

“Our programs equip the next generation of counselors to improve the lives and learning environments of the populations they serve,” says Dr. John Gleason, Dean of the Division of Education and Counseling. “Rivier’s success with online learning supported the extension of these programs to a statewide and regional audience. Our goal is to increase the pool of qualified behavioral health counselors in New Hampshire and beyond.”

The Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling prepares candidates

for a variety of mental health counseling positions. The program entails two years of online coursework with two weekends on campus, followed by a one-year, 700-hour internship. Program graduates are eligible for state licensure as licensed clinical mental health counselors and are prepared for the National Clinical Mental Health Licensing Exam.

Master of Education in School Counseling graduates support the educational and emotional growth and well-being of students who struggle with social, emotional, and educational challenges. The program requires two years of online coursework with two weekends on campus, followed by a one-year, 600-hour internship. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible for licensure in school counseling by the New Hampshire Department of Education.

The University is accepting applications for these new programs for a September 2023 start. Learn more about these and other graduate programs at www.rivier.edu/gradprograms.

Full suite of business programs has earned global accreditation 7

The University’s B.S. in Cybersecurity Management and B.S. in Sport Management programs received accreditation in January 2023, marking the complete accreditation of all business programs by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

“This accreditation recognizes both the rigor of the academic programs as well as the expertise of our distinguished faculty,” says Dr. Amir Toosi, Dean of the Division of Business and Security Studies. “Our full suite of business programs has now received this highly sought-after accreditation, affirming the quality of a Rivier education in a very public way. This accreditation confirms Rivier University’s business programs are aligned with the ACBSP’s core values of Dynamic Leadership, Quality, Learning-Centered Education, Social Advancement, Organizational Learning, and Continuous Improvement.”

ACBSP is a global business education accrediting body that offers special accreditation at all levels of

collegiate business degree programs. Accreditation recognizes teaching excellence, student learning outcomes, and a continuous improvement academic model. ACBSP accredits business programs on fewer than 1,200 campuses across 60 countries.

Commencement 2023—

Rivier graduates largest class in recent years

Rivier celebrated its 88th Commencement on May 14, awarding 744 degrees to associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree graduates. The University honored Reverend Dennis H. Holtschneider, CM, Ed.D., President of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, as Commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient. Rev. Holtschneider addressed graduates on the purpose and mission of higher education.

“The purpose of a liberal arts education at a school with a Catholic heart is for you to look at the world more deeply and truly understand it, to build your skills, and then to commit to act on its behalf,” said Rev. Holtschneider. “That heart hopes for you to become magnificent actors in the world—engaging the world and trying to change the immediacy of individual lives around you or the systems and the social matters that affect all of us.”

The celebration recognized the importance of faith, service, and diversity by awarding three additional honorary degrees to distinguished community leaders. Acknowledging their contributions to the region, Rivier conferred honorary degrees on Margaret “Peggy” Gilmour, Founder and former President of Home Health and Hospice Care; Lucille Jordan, President of Nashua Community College; and Rabbi Jonathan SpiraSavett of Temple Beth Abraham.

“Reverend Holtschneider and our Greater Nashua honorees are an inspiration to our graduates on the impact of faith-in-action and education as a catalyst for social change to advance the common good,” said Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President.

Rivier graduates Nikolas Pignone (B.S. Homeland and International Security) and Agnes Vataparthy (M.S. Computer Science) spoke on behalf of undergraduate and graduate students, respectively. Pignone reflected on the undergraduate student experience during the uncertainty of the pandemic and concluded, “We have learned life lessons about adaptability, strength, and perseverance that we can take into the world. All of these experiences have made us better and more grateful people in the end.”

Vataparthy shared her transformational experience as an international graduate student, traveling 7,685 miles from India to Rivier University to pursue a master's degree in computer science. She acknowledged that each of her fellow graduates has a unique story with different goals, expectations, and cultural backgrounds, yet they all came together to share the Rivier experience.

The ceremony was livestreamed and can be viewed at www.rivier. edu/commencement2023. A gallery of Commencement photos is posted on the University’s Facebook page.

Deeply engaged in the work of higher education, his past positions include academic leadership at St. John’s University, Executive Vice President at Niagara University, and thirteen years as President of DePaul University, Chicago, the country’s largest Catholic University, serving 23,000 students. A prominent writer and speaker, he has been widely recognized for his work on social issues, most notably on immigration reform, homelessness, and enhancing diversity and equity.

Margaret C. Gilmour has combined the skills of a nurse with healthcare advocacy and public service. As a nurse, she established the first hospice in southern New Hampshire and then led the organization as President and CEO of Home Health and Hospice Care in navigating the challenges of illness and end-of-life care. She serves on the Board of Directors for the National Hospice Foundation, Gateways Community Services, the Steering Committee for the Hillsborough South Drug Court, and as a member of Rivier’s Nursing Advisory Council.

Lucille A. Jordan was recognized for 25 years of innovative accomplishments as President of Nashua Community College. Under her leadership, the institution has become a hub of opportunity and a catalyst for economic growth. She has worked to expand educational access for underrepresented populations, created new programs to meet workforce needs, and built partnerships that support the region’s fastest-growing industries. She has served as vice chairman of the National Campus Compact Board, and chair of the New England Community College Council and the Greater Nashua United Way Youth Venture Partnership.

Rabbi Jonathan Spira-Savett of Temple Beth Abraham is a faith leader devoted to education, social justice, and inclusivity. He has served as the spiritual leader of Nashua’s Jewish community for fifteen years. MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Cindy Coughlin is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor at Catholic Charities in Manchester, New Hampshire. She is a trauma-informed clinician and has a specialty of working with bi-cultural people and families. Cindy received her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree at Rivier in 2019.

17

CINDY COUGHLIN

When did you feel called to your profession?

Cindy: Around age 13 or 14, I just knew I wanted to be a therapist, specifically, which is interesting because I never had met a therapist in my life. I come from a difficult family background, and I struggled a lot as a teenager. So I thought, ‘If I can use the turmoil I'm experiencing right now to help someone in the future, it'll be worth it … it became my mission.’

Who are your clients and how do you serve them?

Cindy: I provide psychotherapy services to people from age 12 all the way up to my oldest clients in their 80s, essentially helping with anxiety, depression, and difficult transitions. I’m really passionate about working with families who struggle with communication. I’m also a traumainformed clinician and have a specialty of working with bi-cultural people and families. I assist many Spanish-speaking immigrants who are victims or survivors of domestic violence.

Why do you choose to work for Catholic Charities?

Cindy: Catholic Charities has a holistic approach that I really appreciate. We have mental health counseling services and a host of other things. There’s the Immigration Department and a food

bank. We do things with veterans, with single mothers; we help with all different types of needs. We see people of all faith backgrounds, and we see people who have no faith background. I love working for a place that addresses the whole person at all stages of their life.

How has your Rivier experience supported your success?

Cindy: My first year at Riv, I was scared, I was nervous, and I was excited. Almost every professor I had just spoke truth, life, excitement, and hope into me. At the end of my program, I felt like a different person. I felt equipped. Therapy is about ‘how do I relate to another human being that's sitting in front of me suffering? How do I meet that person?’ A lot of my classes were about that. The courses and professors really helped me to see therapy as a profession, a human profession. They gave me the skills to do what I do.

Is your service mission-driven?

Cindy: Yes. Rivier’s mission is somewhat similar to Catholic Charities’ mission, which is to heal, comfort, and empower people to move lives forward. We want people to really experience a change, whether it be at Riv or at Catholic Charities, and then get out there and do amazing stuff. I feel that way with my clients. I tell them, ‘You can be with me in

therapy as long as you want, but my goal is to transition you out, so you get out there and transform hearts and minds.’

What is the biggest challenge for people today?

Cindy: From my perspective as a therapist, as a society we're suffering from not being able to connect with the person next to us very well. For example, teenagers on social media are disconnected in an overly connected world. People of all ages are struggling and asking, ‘How do I live a fulfilled life within the context of my relationships?’ I think as human beings we are meant and called to be in relationship with one another. In today's world, we're losing that; we're suffering from a lack of true connection with other people.

How does service make a difference?

Cindy: The greatest thing about service, and my particular kind of service in mental health counseling and helping people with their lives, is that it creates long-lasting, generational change. Not just for parents and their children and families, but in all their close relationships. It makes a huge difference. Personally, it gives me a sense of fulfillment, a sense of purpose, and gratitude in my life. It gives me hope on a global scale that change is possible.

Called to serve and mission-driven, Cindy Coughlin makes a difference by helping others improve their lives.

Women’s soccer welcomes Team IMPACT signee

The Raiders women’s soccer team proudly welcomed its newest team member, nine-year-old Serafina Nicastro, to the Rivier community in April with an oncampus press conference attended by the campus and local community, as well as the media.

Diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, Serafina was partnered with the Raiders through Team IMPACT, an organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing serious and chronic illnesses through the power of team sports.

As part of the women’s soccer program, Serafina will participate in many of the team’s activities, including games, practices, and other events. She has attended team gatherings, including late-night weight room sessions in the Muldoon Fitness Center, in support of her new teammates.

“Serafina has been an absolute blessing to the women's soccer team and the University as a whole,” said Head Women’s Soccer Coach Daniel Milton. “The impact that she has already made with the team is so inspiring, and I can't wait to see her and her family cheering on the Raiders this fall.”
