Van ons kant

Voetspore deur Afrika

RICARDO IN PNIEL

In my tienerdae het ek gedroom dat my meisie se naam Julia moet wees. Net sodat ek vir haar kon sing: ‘Julia, oh baby, you’re my shining star!’

Hy was ons Justin Bieber.

Ricardo, famous singer of hits like Daddy and Julia, during one of his last public performances in August 2015 at the Millenium Hall in Pniël. An unbelievable entertainer who has never lost his spark.

Thank you for all the memories, Ricardo. RIP.

Dankie Ricardo. RIP.

'n Ster kwyn

Ek is seker dit geniet lesers se aandag.

- Marlon Lackay

“Dit voel altyd goed as ‘n verering kom vanaf mense binne in Landbousektor,” sê hy.

Die bekroonde boer, Jacky Goliath, was op 22 Oktober aangewys as wenner van die jaarlikse Toyota New Harvest of the Year kompetisie.

te wees. Kry eers ‘n mark vir jou produk, hou produksiekoste so laag as moontlik en onthou kontantvloei kan jou maak of breek.

Three high school learners from Stellenbosch were awarded KickstART art bursaries. The bursaries, made possible by Deloitte, will see the learners attend art classes at the PJ Olivier Art Centre in Stellenbosch until they matriculate. Dillon Johnson of Cloetesville, Tasche Adams of Kylemore and Ayabonga Bayibile of Kayamandi, were congratulated by Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch, Conrad Sidego, as well as lead partner at Deloitte Stellenbosch, Michael van Wyk. The all-expenses paid bursary covers art classes twice a week at the Centre as well as the materials which the learners need for the classes, private transport and a meal on class days, as well as free access to Stellenbosch University Welgevallen Clinic for career guidance, aptitude testing or any other counselling needs. In addition, the learners will be mentored by a KickstART representative to offer academic, emotional or career support.

“Deloitte is committed to making a sustainable impact in the communities within which it operates. As children are our future, it would be to the detriment of Stellenbosch if we do not invest in our youth,” said van Wyk, who presented the recipients with the bursary awards. “The learners were identified by a curatorial panel as bursary recipients after the KickstART sketching and sculpture workshops held earlier this year, based on their talent and aptitude for art,” said Andi Norton, KickstART Project Manager. Ninety-five high school learners from vulnerable communities around Stellenbosch were given the opportunity to learn about art and a future in the creative industries during the full-day programme. To date it has awarded five bursaries.

Upgrade of Wastewater Treatment Works Councillor Donovan Joubert and Vivian Kloppers (Superintendent at the Stellenbosch Wastewater Works) visiting the wastewater construction site.

The Stellenbosch Wastewater Treatment Works is undergoing an upgrade and extension to increase its ultimate treatment capacity from 20.4 Mℓ/d to 35 Million liters per day (Mℓ/d).

Councillor Donovan Joubert, mayoral committee member for Engineering, says the new treatment works is to the benefit of everyone in Stellenbosch but residents may experience inconvenience during the construction period.

The current capacity is severely overloaded and has led to odour problems and a poor effluent quality being discharged into the Veldwachters River.

“The construction process will unfortunately result in a disruption to the existing works which has already resulted in odour nuisances and poor effluent quality,” says Joubert. “Flow diversions and demolition of redundant structures caused the existing plant to be under severe hydraulic and chemical strain. Unforeseen pollution of the Veldwachters River has compelled the Municipality to investigate solutions to improve the effluent quality and to rehabilitate the river.”

According to Dries van Taak, Manager: Water Services at Stellenbosch Municipality, the total contract value is about R417 Million and the project has been divided into two phases. “Phase 1 has started in April 2015 and will be completed in December 2017,” says Van Taak. “This will include the construction of a new Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) plant and wastewater will in future be treated via this new innovative technology. The effluent quality will also comply with the regulations for discharge into the Veldwachters River,” he says. “Phase 2 will focus on modifying the existing plant to work in conjunction with the MBR plant and estimated completion date is July 2018.”

“The construction will also result in an increase in heavy duty vehicles and dust on Vredenburg Road and the surrounding areas. These activities will take place on weekdays and occasional Saturdays during the hours of 07:00 to 18:00. The municipality apologises for any inconvenience this operation may cause and we sincerely request residents to be considerate and patient.”

So sê Raadslid Donovan Joubert, burgemeesterskomiteelid vir Ingenieursdienste. Die totale Bergrivieropvangsgebied se stoorkapasiteit is tans 29% laer as verlede jaar.

a) Taal-implementering •

Hoekom is walvisse so vet as swem sulke goeie oefening is?

Ek sien my eie ma. Catherine. Dit dra by tot weerlose kinders.

Two years after the fire - E L Z O N IA B RO O K S

Our sincere request, as family of the Mentoors, is to the community of Pniël and Stellenbosch for any form of donation.

Saturday morning, 9 November 2013, a 3 year old grandchild from the Mentoor family in Pniël, was playing with matches. It caught alight and in a twinkling of an eye the blankets caught fire.

It could be a bag of cement, a load of sand or whatever you can manage to help this family. For two years they have been sleeping on the floor sharing a two-bedroom house with his sister. While everyone else is looking forward to a festive season, it looks a bit bleak for the Mentoor family.

His grandfather was asleep in the one room and when the toddler realised what he did, he ran out of the house. The family members realised that the house was on fire but it was already too late. They nevertheless tried to extinguish the flames with water, but it was all in vain. The house burned down to the ground and nothing could be saved. Fortunately none of the family members got hurt.

Let us put a smile on the faces of this family by giving something back. Ubuntu is the word in this time of need and I trust that the community will be able to assist.

The community of Pniël showed their respect and sympathies with the family. A lot of donations were received and now after 2 years the building is roof-height. Unfortunately there are no funds for the roofing, electrical, plastering and final touches to the building.

From Security Guards to Directors Thursday 5 November 2015 marked a very important day in the lives of two exceptional men who have unconditionally dedicated themselves to the safety and security of the Dwars River Valley, especially Boschendal, Pniel and Lanquedoc areas. Deon Lucas and Ricardo Adams were awarded their PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulating Authority) certificate, which officially celebrate their titles as the directors of Silvermine Protection Services.

not deter them at being good at what they do. Through hard work, compassion and being impartial, they earned the respect of management, fellow workers and the local Police.

Lundi then had the following proposal to the two security guards: “How would you like to work for Boschendal, or better, would you not like to work for yourself?”

Lucas and Adams worked for a security company on Boschendal Estate for more than a decade. The CEO of Boschendal, Rob Lundi, noticed how the two men served the company with so much pride and passion, going beyond the call of duty.

Without hesitation the two showed keen interest which lead to the establishment of Silvermine Protection Services. Through its community upliftment initiative, Boschendal provided them with startup capital so they could realize a dream they aspired for many years. The company adopted its name from the old silver mine that was started on the slopes of Simonsberg Mountain about 285 years ago.

They did not stop at securing the property and safeguarding visitors, they sometimes acted as ‘Jack of all trades’ helping with general maintenance, acting as postmen to hosing plants. Earning a modest salary did

Silvermine Protection Services only employ security guards through a grading committee. “In our line of work, there is no room for error,” says Lucas. “All of our security officers were handpicked and

Our ever changing valley comes with new challenges and only by working together and finding common ground will we be able to progress to a better future for all of us. Thus working closely with the Groot Drakenstein Police to curb crime in the area is indeed one of the main objectives of Silvermine Protection Services. Well done SPS and good luck with your new company.

Residents are kindly requested to not place refuse out for collection on the affected dates, but that it rather be placed for collection on the alternate dates as indicated above. A group of informal parking attendants were unveiled and presented with their official bibs and identity cards by Stellenbosch Municipality on Tuesday, 17 November, at the launch of this security initiative on The Braak. “We want you to identify the bad elements and work closely with the Police, Stellenbosch Watch and Law Enforcement,” said Councillor Quintin Smit, mayoral committee member for Community Safety. “This initiative will act as a deterrent against crime such as theft out of motor vehicles as well as to empower unemployed people.”

The councillor said that there are many other car guards out there that are giving the new recruits a bad name and the new bibs and identity cards will distinguish the legal parking attendants from others. The parking attendants are screened by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to make sure they have no criminal records. They will report to the offices of Stellenbosch Watch on a daily basis and will also hand in their bibs after completion of their shifts. Their working hours will be from 17h00 until 02h00 every day. According to Councillor Smit the muni-cipality intends to roll out the project to the entire CBD.

Normal waste collection will take place on all other days, including the public holiday on 16 December 2015. We thank you for your cooperation and patience.

ANNUAL CHARITY BALL 2015 IN AID OF PC PETERSEN PRIMARY SCHOOL

A NIGHT WITH BOND, JAMES BOND The Millenium Hall in PniĂŤl was transformed into a scene straight from a Bond movie for Kylemore Charity Foundation and Riviernuus' first Charity Ball. With James Bond as theme, guests spared no effort to dress up for the occasion in aid of PC Petersen Primary in Kylemore. Gentlemen wore their finest tuxedos and the ladies looked strikingly beautiful in true Bond fashion. On arrival guests were served Martinis as they strolled on a red carpet before entering the stylishly decorated hall where a live band was the entertainment for the evening. Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch Municipality, Conrad Sidego, also dressed in his smart tuxedo, was the guest speaker and he urged patrons to invest in education as it forms the backbone of a thriving community. Kylemore Charity Foundation and Riviernuus sincerely thank all sponsors and guests for their contributions in order to make this event truly memorable. We raised a whopping R80 600! The organisers promise that guests can look forward to an even better Charity Ball in 2016. Remember to book your tickets early.

Kyle-MUCH-more than just rugby - LY N D O N J U L I U S

The only Stellenbosch club that was promoted to a higher league. That is the proud milestone Kylemore Rugby Club has achieved in 2015. At the club’s prize giving ceremony they had the privilege of hosting two national coaches as guest speakers in former Springbok coach Peter De Villiers as well as Blitzbokke coach Neil Powell. De Villliers stressed the importance of the community in the club’s success. “Kylemore has never been a rugby club, Kylemore has always been a community club,” he said. “Rugby is not about winning trophies, it is about retaining them. You also don’t have to be big in size to play the game. You just have to be clever enough,” he added. Powell also complimented the community. “I haven’t been to a prize giving ceremony where the whole crowd cheers for everyone who receives a prize.” Part of the success can be attributed to the return of former SARU player, Ivan Jacobs, as coach “I decided to come and give back to the very community that supported me throughout my entire playing career,” Jacobs said. The entire squad of Kylemore players are locally based. “We had challenges in competing for players from the same pool as Super League B side, Pniel Villagers.”

“The promotion means a lot to the people of Kylemore,” club chairman George Erasmus said. “The community was looking for something to support and our first few victories early in the season set the path. We went without a trophy for seven years and this year we received four.” The club’s C-Team also received two trophies from Western Province Rugby for finishing the season at the top of their league as well as being undefeated. Erasmus also thanked everyone who supported the club throughout the season.

Esmond Messiah (3’rd Team coach) with Eugene Adams (Best 3’rd Team Forward)

The club laid out a plan, set it in motion and everyone pulled their weight to achieve success. With Kylemore being promoted to Super League C it shows that not only will they be perceived as a competitive club but also as a club that knows how to set a goal, work towards it and achieve it...in a matter of months. Well done Kylemore RFC and good luck in Super League C!
