Meredeth Turshen creates stunning oil paintings on paper that can be interpreted as summery landscapes or read as abstract works. Inspired by Paul Cézanne, the nineteenth century PostImpressionist painter, Turshen layers delicate oil colors on graphite drawings, giving the work charm and depth.

Miriam Untoria’s acrylic paintings and mixed media pieces are inspired by the human figure, which she examines in multiple settings and contexts. Untoria delves into realistic and fantastic explorations

Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone Presents Art on the Streets

Six Artists Paint Electrical and Fire-Pull Boxes throughout Bayonne

By RVO Staff The Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone has teamed up with the Art Installation Program in Bayonne’s Historic Bergen Point district and commissioned six artists to paint electrical and Fire-Pull boxes on the streets of Bayonne. The six artists selected – Jeff Ware, Maria Lupianez, Tiffany Patrice, Gary Wynans, Samantha Llanes, and Stephanie Petersen were chosen from submissions sent in this past June.

The unveiling of the Bayonne UEZ-Bergen Point Utility Box Art is scheduled for Thurs, Oct. 12 at 11 am at the Bridge Art Gallery, 199 Broadway (between 6th & 7th Streets) in Bayonne.

“I chose these six artists because I felt their artwork would look attractive in the Historic Bergen Point district, from 5th Street to Cottage Street,” Dee Dee Bottino, Assistant UEZ/SID Coordinator says. “All the artwork that was submitted for the installations is beautiful.”

This art installation is made possible through the efforts of the Bayonne Municipal Council, the Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone Corporation, Bridge Art Gallery, Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs and Bayonne Mayor James Davis.

Stephanie Petersen is a photographer and graphic artist from Bayonne. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and has worked with top cosmetic and fragrance companies to create and install graphic images for special events and product launches. Gary Wyans is a Jersey City artist.

His daughter lives in Bayonne, so when he was given the opportunity to submit a proposal to paint the utility boxes, he thought it would be a great opportunity, He has done quite a few utility boxes and murals in Jersey City. Happy to be chosen for this Bayonne art project, Wyans says his daughter will be able to see his art work in her city and be proud. Gary painted a large utility box right off Cottage Street.

I

n the 1960s, the great child actress Patty Duke played Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker on Broadway and in the film where she had to hold her own with veteran actress Anne Bancroft. Duke and Bancroft not only gave fierce performances that earned them each a Tony Award, Duke in particular changed the way child actors were forever perceived.

Her portrayal of Helen Keller proved for the first time that child actors could play real people – real kids – and not just mimic the behavior of adults.

Well, there’s a new kid on the block who gives one heck of a real performance, one Miss Duke (may she rest in peace) would give a thumbs up. She’s Matilda Lawler of Hoboken who’s 9, and just made her debut in the world premiere of Erin Mallon’s play The Net Will Appear, a bittersweet comedy now playing at Mile Square Theatre in Hoboken and running through Sun, Oct. 8.

Matilda passes the Patty Duke test with flying colors; and onWednesday’s, you can catch Matilda’s understudy Willa O’Connor of Hoboken. (Willa also gives a knockout performance!)

In The Net Will

Appear, Matilda and Willa share the role of Rory in this funny and touching play about the friendship between a kid and a grumpy old man played with delicious curmudgeonly flair by the talented Richard Masur, well-known for legendary TV shows like Rhoda, and contemporary films like And the Band Played On. In The Net Will Appear, Masur’s character Nard chugs Jim Beam and puts mousetraps in trees to catch the sparrows, much to Rory’s dismay. Their blossoming friendship takes place on the second floor overhangs outside the bedroom windows of their respective houses.

Each character has a story to tell and Rory and Nard help each other during a difficult time in their lives. (You might want to bring a hankie ‘cause this play will break your heart – a couple of times.)
