Hudson County Community College Begins Yearlong Celebration of 50th Anniversary

The College invites everyone to join in observing “50 Years of Excellence: Fifty and Forward!” with a Kick-off event on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) is marking its Golden 50th Anniversary with a full year of celebratory events. The festivities begin on September 9, 2025 with the Anniversary Kick-off Party and culminate with the Grand Opening of the HCCC Center for Student Success in September 2026.

“There are so many people and milestones we want to remember and recognize. We needed more than just a few events and a few months to properly celebrate this landmark moment in the College’s

history,” said HCCC President Dr. Christopher Reber. “HCCC’s Golden Anniversary also provides opportunities to look ahead to our new, eleven-story Center for Student Success, and our programs, services, and resources that will continue to enrich the education, enjoyment, and quality of life of our neighbors and our community.”

The first of HCCC’s 50th Anniversary celebrations will be held on Monday, September 9, 2025 when there will literally be singing and dancing in the streets. Beginning at 2:00 p.m., HCCC students, faculty and staff will come together in the Gabert Library (71 Sip Avenue, Jersey City, NJ) for music, giveaways, art tours, a history exhibit, “Time Capsule Launch,” and much more.

At 5:00 p.m., the celebration moves down the street to the College’s Culinary Plaza Park (just across from the HCCC Culinary Conference Center at 161 Sip Avenue) for a Dance Party featuring a champagne toast, a singalong to Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration,” music by Kool’s son, DJ Prince Hakim, a raffle, and other festivities.

Other events planned 50th Anniversary Homecoming Block Party and Open House on October 18th; 50th Anniversary Alumni Networking Night on November 13th; and 50th Anniversary Foundation Gala at the Culinary Conference Center on December 4th.

Dr. Reber said details for the September 9th KickOff and the other 2025 and 2026 Anniversary events will be revealed soon.

Curator’s Statement: In shaping an exhibition, my curatorial approach is guided by a commitment to contemporary

vision, material mastery, and a deep inquiry into human experience. I am seeking works that reflect the urgency and spirit of our present moment—art that is both timely and timeless in its capacity to respond to the shifting questions of our era. Technical proficiency is essential, but more so is the integration of medium and meaning. I am interested in pieces where the chosen materials become a vital language, amplifying the artwork’s emotional and conceptual depth. Above all, I value art that ventures beneath the surface, offering not only visual engagement but also a profound

exploration of what it means to be human. I hope to assemble a collection that navigates ambiguity and paradox, evokes empathy and reflection, and invites viewers to consider the contours of private longing and collective consciousness.

Amythyst Kiah

AMYTHYST KIAH

The rootsy alt-rock of Amythyst’s 2021 breakthrough album, Wary + Strange, offered a collection of spellbinding songs detailing her experience with grief, trauma, and alienation, each illuminated in her extraordinary songwriting. A showcase

for her singular musicality and soul-stirring voice, Kiah’s Rounder Records debut soon found many leading critics hailing her as a formidable new talent, landing her on Rolling Stone’s list of the 25 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2021 and drawing acclaim from major outlets like Pitchfork. Adding to her list of accolades includes earning a Grammy nomination for her powerhouse anthem “Black Myself.”

Dori Freeman

Dori Freeman has sharpened her vision of Appalachian Americana over five studio albums.

From the country traditionalism of her self-titled debut to the amplified folk of Ten Thousand Roses, it’s a sound that nods to her mountaintown roots even as it reaches beyond them. Freeman continues creating her own musical geography with Do You Recall, the songwriter’s most eclectic -- and electric -- record yet.

“I grew up in a family that played a lot of traditional music, but my dad played a lot of other types of music for me, too,” says Freeman, who grew up in rural Galax, Virginia. “I’d go fiddler’s conventions, but I’d also watch my dad play jazz, swing, country, and rock & roll. He was a big fan of singer-songwriters. I think that variety has a lot to do with the way my own songwriting has developed.”

Quadrature, Brooklyn Raga

Massive

Quadrature is a musical powerhouse that ventures into uncharted territories at the intersection of raga, rock, jazz and psychedelia. Quadrature features the mesmerizing sitar and effects of Neel Murgai, alongside the innovative Firebird trumpet and effects of Indofunk Satish, the rhythmic brilliance of Tripp Dudley on drum set, and the deep grooves of Damon Banks on bass. Emerging from the legendary Brooklyn Raga Massive jam sessions, Quadrature began their journey with fully improvised sets rooted in ragas, captivating audiences on the streets of Brooklyn. In 2023, they were artists in residence at David Rockefeller Creative Arts Center at The Pocantico Center, where they further developed their sound and arrangements. They have performed at Globalfest at Lincoln Center, Ragas Live Festival at Pioneer Works, Levitt Pavilion, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, DromNYC and more.

Alice Howe and Freebo

Christina Courtin

Christina Courtin’s latest release, Situation Station, recorded four years after her critically acclaimed first album, Varsity, can best be described as a tapestry of her musical and life experiences. As she weaves together her dual worlds, the singersongwriter and classically trained violinist guide listeners through somber plains and heartbreak, all the while surrounding them with warmth, joy, and hope.

She has also been a collaborator and side player to many artists and groups, most recently including Bonnie Prince Billy, Planetarium, Doyle Bramhall II, Lee Ann Womack, Nico Muhly, Dr. Dog, Lisa Loeb, Sara Barellies, and the Buffalo Philharmonic. Christina is a featured soloist for the films Chappaquiddick and Free State of Jones, and occasionally writes music for This American Life.

There she was, recording at the legendary Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, standing on ground soaked in soul, and she knew the truth: she had to dig deeper than ever before. Channeling Fame’s ghosts, she mined her heart, poured everything into her vocals, and created her latest album, Circumstance — 11 stirring tracks that pull no punches weaving together a vibrant tapestry of southern rock, country, folk, classic soul and blues. Three of the original tracks she wrote solo, with the remaining seven co-written with her creative partner, Freebo. A veteran rock and folk musician who was Bonnie Raitt’s bass player during the 1970s, he backed Alice on the album on fretless bass as well as produced and arranged it.
