Bayonne Sicilian Citzens Club

Honors Dr. Neil J Carroll III Man of the Year 2025

Neil J. Carroll Ed.D is a second-generation American of proud Italian heritage. He comes from a family deeply rooted in public service and civic leadership. That legacy of dedication to community has guided his path—as a lifelong educator, two-term city Councilman, and tireless advocate for Bayonne’s future.

With over a decade of experience as a publicschool teacher, Dr. Carroll has been a cornerstone of educational excellence in Bayonne. His passion for empowering students and fostering a love for learning has been evident in his dynamic approach to teaching, earning him the admiration of colleagues, students, and parents alike.

His academic journey began at Saint Peter’s Prep, followed by Saint Peter’s University, where he ursued higher education with vigor and dedication. His scholarly efforts culminated in achieving a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D), reflecting his commitment to academic excellence and continuous learning.

In addition to his contributions in the field of education, Neil Carroll has made significant strides in local governance, serving two consecutive terms as a city Councilman. In 2019, he became the youngest

elected in the City of Bayonne at 27 years old. During his tenure, he exhibited a steadfast commitment to improving the quality of life for Bayonne residents, championing initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety, infrastructure, and community engagement.

One of Neil’s notable endeavors as a public servant has been his advocacy for traffic safety.

Recognizing the importance of ensuring the well-being of both pedestrians and motorists, he has been a vocal proponent of measures to promote safer streets and reduce traffic-related accidents in Bayonne. Two such measures he instituted are the Stop Sign Illumination Program as well as getting legislation passed to make U-Turns on Broadway illegal.

Furthermore, his passion for community enhancement extends beyond policy advocacy to impactful event organization. He spearheaded the establishment of the Field of Heroes event, a fundraising effort as well as a commemoration honoring local heroes and veterans, fostering a sense of unity and gratitude within the

community. The program under his guidance is entering its 8h year.

In a testament to his dedication to preserving cultural heritage, Neil played a pivotal role in reviving an Italian Parade after a 10-year absence as well as an Italian festival in Bayonne after a 25year hiatus. Through his leadership and collaborative efforts, these events returned as a vibrant celebration of Italian culture, fostering community pride and unity.

Neil is a proud member of such organizations as the Knights of Columbus, Lions, Elks, Sons of Italy, and of course the Sicilian Citizens Club. As a member of 10 years, he has served as Chairman of the board for 6. During his membership he orchestrated the club’s involvement in the Bayonne Farmers Market where he can be found under the tent selling zeppoli every Tuesday.

Dr. Neil J. Carroll Ed.D’s tireless commitment to education, community service, and cultural preservation has solidified his reputation as a catalyst for positive change in Bayonne. His exemplary leadership, coupled with his unwavering dedication to the betterment of his hometown, continues to inspire and uplift the community he proudly serves.

The 36th Annual Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST) October 3rd

The Creative Side presents Convergence: Pivoting a Renaissance: Art, Technology, Business and Wellness for the 2025 Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST).

The Jersey City Art and Studio Tour (JCAST) was originally founded as the Downtown Jersey City Artists’ Studio Tour in 1990. The event featured over 70 artist studios, 18 exhibitions, and dozens of volunteers, drawing over 1,500 attendees. This helped establish Jersey City as a cultural hub for the arts.

From 1994 to 2013, JCAST was organized by Pro Arts, in partnership with the City of Jersey City. Since 2014, the event has been managed by the City’s Office of Cultural Affairs. In 2023 and 2024, ARTS 14C took over the event, with JCAST being a part of the larger Jersey City Art Week. In 2024, the format of the tour shifted to highlight individual artist studio visits in response to the city’s evolving arts landscape.

In 2025, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and the Office of Cultural Affairs announced that The Creative Side was selected as the Producer for the 36th Street Edition.

The Creative Side, led by Atim Annette Oton, has designed and executed the event, with a focus on bringing Jersey City’s diverse

Curious Matter is proud to present a solo exhibition GILDA PERVIN

Of Time And Memory

Curious Matter is proud to present GILDA PERVIN: Of Time and Memory, a solo exhibition of the artist’s work. The exhibition opens with a reception on Sunday, October 5, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

Pervin’s art practice, rooted in a lifelong engagement with material and texture, transforms humble substances— from cement and sand to grape stems, seed pods and other found objects—into works of striking presence. Unified in black, her

sculptures and drawings are meditations on time, memory, and transition. In Pervin’s work, black slows recognition, objects first read as line, form, and texture, camouflaging their source materials. What emerges she calls “a moment, and a sense of memory.”

Drawing comparisons to Robert Rauschenberg in her use of found objects and to Louise Nevelson in her unifying black surfaces, Pervin’s work also resonates with the

meditative clarity of Agnes Martin. Yet her voice is singular: forged in childhood memories of industrial Pittsburgh, refined through decades of exploration, and still, today, guided by what she describes as “the discoveries and surprises” of process.

From the exhibition essay: “What she asks of the viewer is simple and direct: to notice. Whether positively or negatively, she wants the work to elicit feeling. Her art,

she says with disarming candor, is ‘work that happens from being human and being alive— can’t argue with that.’”

HUDSON HAPPENINGS LIVE THEATER

Art House Productions Presents Hamlet, Directed by C. Rashee Stevenson

Art House Productions (Executive Artistic Director Meredith Burns) is proud to announce its fall mainstage production of Hamlet, directed by C.Rashee Stevenson, running October 9–26, 2025, at the Art House Theater in Jersey City.

This bold reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy fuses the original text with interpolated language from Les Nègres and Les Paravents by Jean Genet and works by Federico García Lorca—transforming the play into a cosmic crime thriller that plunges deep into grief, identity, and the metaphysical.

“This production of Hamlet is deeply personal to me,” says C. Rashee Stevenson. “I wanted to explore the emotional and psychological weight of grief, power, and identity through a lens that feels immediate, cosmic, and urgent. We’re pushing the boundaries of what this classic can be, and I’m incredibly grateful to Art House for giving us the space to reimagine it for today’s world.”

“It’s thrilling to bring Hamlet to life in such a bold and contemporary way,” says Joshua Feder, Producing Director at Art House. “C. Rashee Stevenson’s vision is transformative

he’s created something that honors the text while making it entirely new. This is exactly the kind of ambitious, artistdriven work that Art House exits to support.”

“C. Rashee Stevenson is one of the most exciting theater artists working today,” adds Meredith Burns, Executive Artistic Director. “This production is especially meaningful to me as I’ve known C. Present Tense, read as a grammatical term, refers to actions or states occurring now, habitually, or as general truths. Yet when these words are read individually –present and tense – they invite deeper contemplation, reinterpretation, and expression. Recent national and global events have brought to the surface the deepening fractures in our social fabric.

The quote, “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention,” widely attributed to Heather Heyer—who was killed during the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia—serves as a call to awareness and action. As citizens and artists, we are both witnesses and participants—not only in our local and personal spheres but also within wider regional, national, and global contexts. We carry the responsibility to respond to injustice, to challenge systems of oppression, and to speak truth to power.
