Art House Opens New Space with LEISURE, LUST by Sara Farrington NJ Playwright Explores Issues of Love, Marriage, Gender and Mental Illness

Playwright Sara Farrington’s new play opens new Art House Productions space

By Sally Deering Playwright Sara Farrington, the writer of Leisure, Lust, the new play at Art House Productions, changed her perspective from actor to playwright and never looked back.

“I thought I had to be seen to be expressive,” Farrington says, the day before Leisure, Lust opens in Art House’s new space at the Cast Iron Lofts building on 17th Street in Jersey City. (Where

Leisure, Lust is a play fashioned on the personal life of a writer like Edith Wharton and her tortured personal life. It opened Thursday, Oct. 26, and runs Thursdays through Sundays through Nov. 12. The cast stars Stephanie Regina, Gabriella Rhodeen, Kyle Stockburger and Christopher Tocco playing multiple roles.

Director Marina McClure leads an allfemale creative team with set designer Mary Hamrick, costume designer Alice Tavener, and stage manager Kristiana Cowcer.

Intrigued by Wharton’s dual life as a successful novelist in an unhappy marriage (Wharton’s husband was rumored manic-depressive and her young lover a handsome gold-digger,) Farrington says she explores these issues in her play.

Panepinto Galleries in JC Debuts New Show 56 Local Artists Exhibit Work at 70 Hudson on the Waterfront

L

ike a 19th century Paris Salon where paintings filled every nook and cranny of wall space to exhibit artists’ works, Through The Eyes of An Artist, the new exhibition at 70 Hudson Street in Jersey City has the same feel.

The exhibition is presented by Panepinto Galleries & Spear Street Capital with Stefania Panepinto as curator.

Panepinto took a section of the first-floor, high-ceilinged lobby of 70 Hudson Street, a massive building at Exchange Place on Jersey City’s waterfront and turned it into a gallery.

Through The Eyes Of An Artist, which opened Oct 24 and runs through May 2018, spotlights 56 artists from Jersey City, Hoboken, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Bronx who created 73 works that explore their perception of contemporary life. The show features paintings, some papier-mâché pieces and a depiction of the cartoon character Popeye made with rubber bands.

“The artists I chose, a majority of them I’ve worked with in the past,” Panepinto says during the exhibit’s well-attended Opening Reception. “I chose the

“It’s a take-off of 1950s and 60s TV shows,” Gross says. “I have this narrative – gender obliteration. It’s a science experiment that went terribly wrong and these people live in that world. Doll Baby is one of them.”

Artist Nupur Nishith of Bayonne is also exhibiting her work in Through The Eyes Of An Artist and her painting Sarvadrasta II represents “one who sees all and takes care of everybody”.

“I started with that concept,” Nishith says.

“It’s inspired by Indian folk art.”

“I’m enjoying it because the work has such a widerange,” Brooks says.

“Everything is so interesting to look at. It’s like an art salon, which is something we’d like to have more of in Jersey City, so we can view art, talk about it, and the the general public can see it.”

Hudson Bike Share Announces Expansion of Program to Five More Cities This fall, Hudson Bike Share, the public bike share program operating in Hoboken, will add 260 new bikes and 35 new stations throughout Guttenberg, North Bergen, Weehawken, Bayonne and West New York. The program is growing from its initial 250 bikes and 29 stations at launch to 560 bikes and over 65 stations across six cities.

Novado Gallery’s New Group Show Opens Nov. 4th EDGE Features 14 Artists plus Artists’ Panel Discussion

By Sally Deering Gallery owner Anne Novado and curator Thomas Banks took a trip into New York, recently, to pick up artworks from several artists exhibiting in Novado Gallery’s upcoming show, EDGE, which opens Sat, Nov. 4, 7-10 pm. Novado Gallery is on Morgan Street in Jersey City, close to the Jersey City waterfront.

EDGE is a group exhibition featuring the work of 14 artists at varying career stages and notoriety, Anne Novado says.

Curated by Thomas Banks, it features artists Sky Allen, Michael Anderson, Tunji Dada, Gary Lichtenstein, Julia Powers, Kele Mccomsey, Tom Sanford, Noah Becker, Caslan Bevington, Theda Sandiford, Ben Keating and Amaya Gurpide and Elizabeth Gregory Gruen.

“First and foremost, the show is about the artists,” Novado says, “and it’s a very timely exhibition just because there’s so much diversity and variety. That’s what EDGE is about, what the artists are bringing to the table.”

There will be a lot of interesting work, Novado says.

“Elizabeth Gregory Gruen does these impeccable, immaculate paper cut-outs,” Novado says.

“They’re layered, elegant and graceful.

Guest Curator Thomas Banks has chosen an eclectic group of artists, Novado says.

“In this show, it’s all about the artists,” Banks says. “It’s about the people making the art, and the art reflects what the artists are plugging themselves into. Whether an artist is working via sociopolitical commentary or an artist is creating work in an introspective way, and/or some other compulsion of the artist soul’s lifeforce. The gestalt of artist-centric EDGE will seem chaotic, messy, uncomfortable, powerful, unapologetic, and beautiful. After all, isn’t contemporary art, when most effective, a reflection of the times we are living in?”

There will be an artist panel discussion on Sun, Nov. 12, from 3-5pm; EDGE runs through Thurs, Dec 14.
