Pro Arts Jersey City presents SOLSTICE and CURATORS’ CHOICE Exhibitions at Jersey City Hall and Casa Colombo feature more than 30 Artists

F

or some people, the longest day of the year is usually the lousiest, fraught with tension and misery that makes it feel like the day will never end.

This isn’t that.

The longest daylight is Wed, June 21, also known as the Summer Solstice, and to celebrate, Pro Arts of Jersey City presents SOLSTICE, a show of more than 30 artists currently on view at the Rotunda Gallery in Jersey City Hall through June 28. The show is curated by Eileen Ferara and Napur Nishith, members of the Pro Arts Jersey City group with a membership of more than 100 professional artists.

That’s not all.

Pro Arts Jersey City also has a new show opening Sat, June 17 at the Casa Colombo arts center on Monmouth Street in Jersey City. CURATORS’ CHOICE features the work of eight artists who were chosen by eight curators during a one-day portfolio review back in April.

The show includes several photographers focused on urban and suburban subject matter, Yoshimoto says. For example, Michael Endy took pictures of Virgin Mary statues in people’s back-and-front yards. Photographer Amy Becker’s photographs are of abandoned pay phones.

On Fri, June 16, from 6-9 pm, the Bayonne Museum on Broadway will be bustling with art-lovers on the prowl for some interesting art – and what a choice they will have.

“This is more of a fun competition trying to involve the art community with the City Fathers,” Bayonne artist and organizer Nupur Shirith says.

Vicki Kristina Barcelona to Perform in the Parlour at Fox & Crow Band Returns for a Swinging Night of Tom Waits & Original Tunes

G

irl groups are a rare breed of women doing their own thing in the male-dominated music world; they create their own unique sound and groove just as cool as the boys.

Vicki Kristina Barcelona fits those stilettos perfectly – a girl group with its own style, doing music their way. The three singer/songwriter/musicians – Amanda Homi (percussion), Rachelle Garniez (accordion/ guitar) and Terry Radigan (guitar) – sing original tunes they wrote and a Tom Waits’ repertoire. They perform throughout the Metropolitan area and are returning to the back parlour at Fox & Crow on Thursday, June 22 at 8 o’clock for another show.

And we lucky to have them back in Jersey City.

Along with the Brooklynbased band’s original tunes, VKB will devote most of the evening to Tom Waits’ songs the band has deconstructed and reinvented in their own style. For instance, their rendition of “Temptation” is a sexy, hip-swiveling snake dance of seduction. Waits would be proud.

They are terrific musicians, too. Radigan is an intense, high voltage guitarist and Garniez strums a ukulele-banjo, blows a

Rachelle Garniez kazoo and a deftly handles a big-ass accordion so beautifully, she could make a dove cry. Homi, the dark-haired percussionist and a highly-trained vocalist plays lots of interesting percussive instruments throughout the show including a Washboard Tie. On a recent Monday, Homi took a moment from a rehearsal where she was learning a new instrument – the Gnibri – to talk about how the band hooked-up and what their future plans are.

RVO: How did you get the name VKB? Are you all fans of Woody Allen’s movie?

AH: I have to admit; it was my idea originally. I was tossing around a lot of names. For an eclectic female trio, you think of so many names. It seemed to fit.

RVO: There seems to be a true camaraderie on stage. Are you friends offstage?

AH: Yes. We get along great. Our last excursion upstate, we were even laughing in the grocery store. Terry and Rachelle are both fantastic women –

Amanda Homi of VKB AH: At this point, it depends on the length of the show. We’ll do two originals each, but focus on the Tom Waits material.

RVO: You are a terrific percussionist. I bet you can make beats out of anything. What’s the weirdest instrument you’ve ever played?

AH: Weirdest instrument?

I’m learning a new one as we speak. It has three strings and it’s a fretless instrument. I wish I knew the correct name for this.

(The Gnibri). I bought it in Morocco, which has some wonderful instruments. I do study percussion and instruments all over the world. I like to be authentic as much as possible.

RVO: How do you collaborate? Do you rehearse often?

AH: We meet up as often as we can. Everyone travels and has different agendas.

We’ll meet more often if we have an upcoming gig. I

think collectively, it’s such a huge repertoire, we’ve kind of honed ones we really like to do the most.

When a song is not getting there, we’ll try to make it work. A lot of arrangements get changed. Some of the songs, we really like it. We do Chicago, but it never felt right, and recently we hit on the right groove and feel. I think at this point, the ones that we stick with, and keep in the set are the ones we constantly want to do.

RVO: Will you be putting out a CD soon?

AH: We have yet to officially put out a CD. This configuration with Terry and Rachelle, we’re only together for over a year.

We’re recording very soon.

RVO: Can you talk about how you mesh your originals with Mr. Waits’ tunes?

Terry Radigan RVO: Do you prefer intimate venues like Fox & Crow?

AH: We feel very comfortable in an intimate setting.

Part of performing in a theater setting is to make the audience feel as if it’s intimate.

RVO: You have a great singing voice; are you professionally trained?

AH: Actually, I am a professional singer. The percussion thing, I don’t consider myself a professional percussionist.

RVO: How would you describe the VKB sound?

AH: I would say we’re eclectic. I think there’s a Cont’d on page 8

You want to be confined to your arrangements and you carefully worked them out, but when you perform it, you want to be able to veer a little way off that. I’m a fan of gypsy music. There’s a very high skill-level musically, but at the same time you have

passion and a danger-bedamned, devil-may-care feeling. Collectively, when we tap into that, I think we’re at our best.

Marist Artwork Showcased at CarePoint Health-Bayonne Medical Center The artistic works of dozens of Marist High School students and graduates on are display at Bayonne Medical Center and being appreciated by patients, employees and visitors.

More than 50 of the pieces have been hung throughout the first floor of the hospital in corridors and waiting rooms.

“It feels amazing,” said Chloe Gregory. “I just want people to have artwork to see.”

The students were honored recently with a reception at the hospital. Marist Head of School Alice Miesnik and art teacher Carolynn John praised the students for their hard work in creating the pieces.

The art exhibition is one of the ways that CarePoint Health reaches out to the community, said Catherine Shull Fernald, BMC Chief Operating Officer.

“We are so happy to do things for Marist High School,” Shull Fernald said.

“The students were so nice to share their talents with us.”

Many of the school’s students also volunteer at BMC. “This speaks to the kind of community that CarePoint’s building here at the hospital,” Miesnik said.

Miesnik credited John with instilling the interest in art with the students, which has led them to renown art schools and careers in the field.

Jersey City Project EAT to Turn City Hall Plaza into Foodie Wonderland Small Businesses Spotlighted at Weekend Food Festival

Wait till you see the food vendors lined up for this year’s Jersey City Project Eats festival happening Saturday and Sunday, June 24 & 25 at City Hall Plaza. Yummy dishes for every palate – from vegan to carnivore – are guaranteed to tempt and deliver a vast array of noshables for festival-goers.

The weekend long JC Project Eats is sponsored by the City of Jersey City and the Office of Mayor Steven M. Fulop and it’s the fifth year that the annual event will turn Jersey City Hall’s sidewalk square out front into one a gastronomic extravaganza.

The JC Project is a Jersey-City not-for-profit run by volunteers like Kristen Scalia, owner of Kanibal & Co, a small apparel and home goods shop on Montgomery Street. Scalia is a member of the board which raises money for small businesses by putting on summer and winter outdoor events. The non-profit organization formed when Scalia and other downtown Jersey City business owners lost income when Hurricane Sandy flooded their stores and ruined thousands of dollars of inventory.

“We had four feet of water and lost all of our inventory,” Scalia says. “Our insurance company said it was a a flood surge, and we were denied our claim.”

Scalia says she was lucky because her friends raised money for her to re-open her store.

We thought wouldn’t it be nice to have some kind of resource in town that was able to leverage businesses where they could generate income for improvements.”

That’s how the JC Project started and the food festival came about. Since then, it has become so popular vendors apply for a limited amount of available slots, but not everyone gets chosen.

“It’s invite only,” Scalia says.

“For our food event, we want to keep it food vendors, and for our market in the winter, we like to have a select amount of vendors in jewelry, natural textiles, bath & body,” Scalia says.

Cont’d from page 16 “We partnered with Jersey Girls Food Tours, and we’re doing something brand new with them,” Scalia says. “It’s kind of a secret. A certain amount of visitors will be invited to participate in a special food event.”

The JC Project offers small business owners one-on-one mentoring and entrepreneurial training, Scalia says. If a small business owner is interested, they can reach out and Scalia’s team will direct them to the best person in town to meet. The volunteers don’t have an office, per se, but meet up sometimes at Andco on Montgomery Street that hosts seminars and workshops.

And since the food festival started five years’ ago, several businesses were launched at the festival like Eema’s, which serves authentic Hawaiian food.

A big supporter of the JC Project is Mayor Fulop, Scalia says.

“Mayor Fulop has been to all our events,” Scalia says.

“We’ve always been very grateful to him for keeping small businesses alive here in Jersey City. He makes himself accessible. As a small business person, I think that’s amazing.”
