in Hudson for 16 years.

Before that, Carter spent 17 years working construction in Louisville. He has travelled all over the world and to almost every national park, he says, including Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon where he worked as a short order cook back in the day. There, he received room & board and a stipend along with the opportunity to hike the canyon with his trusty camera around his neck.

“You would work six, seven or eight days in a row and then get three days off to hike the canyon,” Carter says. “I’ve always had a job to make money to travel. That was my reason for working every day. I’ve been to Greece, to Scotland, all of the Caribbean, and I’ve been to Hawaii four times.”

After living in Indiana, Carter and his wife moved

“Everything I’m doing in this show reflects what I’ve learned these last two years,” Carter says. “Juliana changed my eyes.

I try to be unique in my own way. When I look at a reflection in the window, I can see what others aren’t looking at.”

Jonathan Levine returns to JC

Moves Chelsea Gallery to Mana Contemporary

I

t’s been two months since Mana Contemporary staff painted the words “Jonathan Levine Gallery” next to studio doors on the 3rd and 4th floors. Gallery owner, art collector and curator, Levine created a huge splash on the New York scene with his Chelsea gallery and now he’s back in Jersey City.

The 4th floor Jonathan Levine Gallery features the work of Los Angeles artist Victor Castillo’s WE WERE ALL TO BE KINGS, a solo exhibition of paintings and mixedmedia inspired by vintage American cartoons. On the 3rd floor, artist David Choong Lee of San Francisco debuts GRAVITY, a collection of abstract 3D paintings that take the viewer to a place beyond the surface of the canvas (3D glasses supplied at the gallery).

At the shows’ openings on Saturday, April 1, Levine welcomed guests in his down-to-earth Jersey way (he was born in Trenton). Levine studied at Montclair State University, opened galleries in New Hope, Pennsylvania, then Philadelphia and Chelsea.

By the late 1990s, Levine had connected unknown artists all over the world

with collectors “from corporate CEOs to rock stars”.

Now he’s back in Jersey City, and Levine says, that’s where he wants to be.

“I’m the only commercial gallery at Mana Contemporary,” Levine says as guests stroll in for the gallery’s exhibitions. “New York City is over for me.

It’s too expensive, and too crowded. This is better than Chelsea. It’s still gritty. I like being back where I’m from. I’d rather show work in my home state.”

COMIC CHARACTERS FROM THE PAST

Victor Castillo, born in Chile and a resident of Los Angeles, presents walllength paintings of cartoon characters from the classic animation studios of Van Beuren and Walt Disney, notably from the Silly Symphony series produced in the 1930s. The artist

describes the painting titled We Were All to Be Kings, as “a king eating alone … a table with a feast...and all around animals are watching. The animals are angry because they have realized that they are food for slaughter.”

“I grew up with a fascination for American pop culture,” Castillo says. “In the Disney productions that arrived in Chile, you would see Uncle Scrooge traveling the world in search of wealth. They would arrive in a place with lots of gold, and he and his nephews would take it and be happy.

I feel with right to appropriate because I grew up with all this in my face. My paintings come from my dreams.”

ABSTRACT 3D, THE SIGNATURE STYLE David Choong Lee has been a staple of the San Francisco art scene for the past 20 years and has perfected a signature style that “merges figuration and abstraction”. He says his influences have been diverse,

van Gogh to Rembrandt, graffiti and underground music. This is Lee’s first venture into Jersey City, which, he says, reminds him of Oakland, California near San Francisco.

“I heard a lot about Mana Contemporary,” Lee says.

“This is my first time here and I’ve already met a few great artists.”

Dan Frohwirth of Jersey City is an arts patron who’s on the board of Pro Arts in Jersey City and formerly on the board of Art House Productions. Frohwirth stopped by to see Levine’s shows at Mana Contemporary.

“I’m glad he’s here,” Frohwirth says. “He shows great artists. I’m hoping this is the beginning of more New York galleries coming here.”

Fans of Jonathan Levine’s exhibitions, Rachel Bridge and Gina Altadonna drove in from Philadelphia to see the shows at the Jonathan Levine Gallery. “It’s fantastic,” Altadonna says, wearing 3D glasses to look at Lee’s paintings. “Jonathan always has fantastic shows.

I’m surprised and intrigued at what he presents. I didn’t expect this at all. It’s amazing.”

life-long participation in punk and underground music grew into a curatorial experiment. In 2005, he opened Jonathan Levine Gallery in Chelsea and two years later, he relocated the gallery to Jersey City with a new focus on community and collaboration.

His first show at Mana in March was “Welcome Back to New Jersey” and featured several popular artists including Ron English of Jersey City.

“I’m proud to be here,” Levine continues. “For me, as a gallery owner, I get to experience the artists’ creative process. I’m inspired by their activism. I’m motivated, energized and excited by the artists I work with. Their work takes me to another place.”

uciano’s San Vito Restaurant & Pizzeria has been a Bayonne landmark since it opened its doors in 1979 with Luciano Ventrone making pizzas in the front and his wife Maria cooking Italian dishes in the kitchen.

More than 35 years later, it’s still a family affair as Luciano and Maria pass the torch to their son Anthony and his cousin Antonio Ventrone who run the restaurant and Anthony’s sister Joanne Darmanin, who handles business affairs.

Mom and Dad are still involved, Anthony says, but more on a consulting basis.

Anthony and Antonio are responsible for what goes on the plates.

“Cooking is my true passion,” Anthony says.

“When I was in high school, I was working parttime making pizzas. My mother would show me recipes for meatballs and

chicken soup. Ironically, that’s how we started with our soups. My dad was working, and my mother would make it here or make it home. Soups like Escarole Bean and Chicken Soup. She would make extra, and Dad would tell the customers, ‘I have soup, would you like to try some?’ People starting asking for it, and now we serve soup every day.”

The restaurant, which seats 65 on the first floor has a second floor used for private functions or when the place gets super busy.

It’s been a successful run for Luciano’s San Vito with more than 35 years of feeding Bayonne residents and out-of-towners. The restaurant keeps packing them in, Anthony says, because the family recipes they serve are consistently good and made with fresh ingredients.

“We keep all ingredients fresh and try to keep the prices down,” Anthony

says. “Food should always be consistent and cooked with love.”

The restaurant has been so successful, the family opened a catering hall across the street – Villa Maria, named for Maria Ventrone, and used for big parties and wedding receptions.

Open 11 am to 10 pm, Luciano’s San Vito has a hearty menu of classic sandwiches, gourmet pizzas and chicken and seafood dinners and specials. Gourmet pizzas include the

Napolitano with fresh mozzarella; White Pizza with tomato & ricotta, White Pizza with broccoli, the Luciano Special Combo pizza with sausage, mushrooms, pepperoni and onions, Stuffed Pizza, Whole Wheat Ultra-Thin pizza, and Buffalo Chicken Pizza ($5-$22).

Soups are Chicken, Lentil and Escarole Bean ($4); salads are Sherry, Chef, Seafood, Caesar and Cold Antipasto ($7-$14.95).

Pastas include Penne Puttanesca, Pasta Primavera,

Bowties, Pasta with Vodka Sauce, Rigatoni with Mushrooms, Spaghetti in Tomato Sauce, Baked Ziti, Stuffed Shells, and Pasta Carbonara ($7-$10.75).

Chicken and Seafood dishes include Chicken Sorrentino (eggplant & fresh mozzarella), Chicken Parmigiana, Chicken Marsala, Chicken Francese, Chicken with Broccoli and Chicken alla Maria with white wine & mushrooms.

For seafood lovers, there’s Shrimp served Parmigiana, Marinara, or Francesestyle, and Zuppa di Pesce (fish combo) ($12.50$19.95).

“Some recipes came from Italy,” Anthony says, “and some standard recipes we put our own flair to.”

There are signature dishes, too, like the Hot Antipasto Appetizer. Anthony says: “It’s a unique dish, a sampling of six of our appetizers on one plate including sautéed shrimp, Cont’d on page 15
