THE ARTFUL LIFE Andrea McKenna’s Solo Show “Learning to be Lost” to open at LITM Singer-Songwriter Shayfer James’ Songs Inspired by McKenna’s Art

Artist Andrea McKenna keeps moving forward, experiencing the artist’s life she has chosen by expressing herself in paintings, scenic design and running Raven Gallery & Boutique in Jersey City with jewelry artist Javiera Rodriguez.

“I wanted an artful life,” McKenna says. “New experiences always bring something new to my work.”

McKenna’s latest venture is a solo show at LITM on Newark Avenue in Jersey City’s downtown district opening Tuesday, May 2.

The show” Learning to be Lost” will be an exhibition of 19 new works and 3-or-4 older pieces, she says. The

title of the show is based on a song by singer-songwriter Shayfer James, who did the show March of Crows, last year, featuring tunes he wrote about artists’ paintings. “Learning to be Lost” is a song James wrote about McKenna’s painting, “The Earth”.

“Shayfer borrowed paintings from different artists in the community,” McKenna says. “He borrowed my painting “The Earth” which I had done in 2013.

When I heard the song, I felt he captured my painting in words and song. The more I listen to his song, the more I realize that he captured the essence of my body of work. He described a lot of it very well. So, as I prepared for this show at LITM, I thought I would ask him to perform that song at the reception. He loved the idea and is actually taking it further. He’s creating a composition of music for the whole evening.”

James will be performing throughout the Opening Reception on May 2nd. (It starts at 7 pm.)

“Once we decided to do this, I thought I would change the title of the show,” McKenna says. “It’s an internal journey, learning to be lost in who you are.”

This past November, McKenna suffered a personal loss with the death of

“I had a blast with Addams Family,” McKenna says. “When the curtain went up at the Loew’s you heard gasps.”

McKenna says she would consider designing another show if the opportunity arose. She designed the set for the Art House fundraiser “Snow Ball” last year and she says she’s looking forward to getting to know Art House’s new artistic director Meredith Burns. She’s also looking forward to her show at LITM. “I love LITM, I love showing there,” McKenna says. “it’s a welcoming place to show. The crowd is

good.”

McKenna keeps a busy schedule, but she’s committed a life in art.

GROOVE ON GROVE Kicks Off May 3; Celebrates 10th Year Rachel Sieg & “Dancing” Tony Susco Spotlight JC Rockers & Artisans

W

ednesday lands mid-work-week and can make it tough getting to Friday if it wasn’t for GROOVE ON GROVE, a howling-to-the moon, Wednesday night concert series spotlighting Jersey City musicians, artisans and foodies. It begins Wed, May 3, at 5 pm with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Mayor and then from 6-9 pm, all summer long under the stars at Grove Street PATH Plaza.

This year, Groove on Grove celebrates its 10th year anniversary and it owes its success to the people working behind the scenes: Executive Director of the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District (HDSID) Rachel Sieg, and Talent Booker “Dancing Tony” Susco.

On Wednesday, May 3rd, the kick-off begins at 5 pm on the portable stage set up at the Grove Street PATH Plaza where Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop officiates a ribbon-cutting

Segunda Quimbama ceremony. Jersey City Sweets will provide cake to sweeten the occasion and then on to the music.

Dancing Tony will plug in the mics, and bring on the bands, turning Grove Street

PATH Plaza from a tangle of commuters into a festival-goers dream where the music is loud, munchies and libations are nearby and you can take a stroll and buy some cool, artsy, handmade little treasures.

“At HDSID, we like to promote shopping local in Jersey City,” Sieg says.

“You don’t have to go through the Holland Tunnel to buy things. You can get them right here. At Groove on Grove, we’ll have a lot of great artisans selling really cool things like jewelry, funky T-shirts, candles, make-up, soap. We have a lot of talent in Jersey City, and the Grove Street PATH Plaza is a great place to show it off. And, to the first 100 people that show up on Opening Day, we’re giving away a money pouch to put your money in and your Metro Card.”

Opening Day’s musical line-up will feature three Jersey City-based bands and Groove on Grove favorites: The Milwaukees rock band, the Puerto Rican folkloric band Segunda Quimbama, and reggae from Universal Rebel.

“One of the first bands that performed at Groove on Grove is The Milwaukees,” Dancing Tony says.

“That’s one of the reasons they’re on the bill for May 3rd. We’re mixing it up that night.”

wners Vini and Yuna Parana give customers a light, airy and friendly vibe in their Brazilian eatery Café Batata, (in Portuguese it means Potato Café). It’s a little bistro nestled among the two-story houses that line 2nd Street between Brunswick & Monmouth Aves; and the house specialty is the Batata Suica, a SwissBrazilian potato pancake with a choice of stuffings that are all gluten-free and delicious.

Mignon Champignon “The Batata Suica is a coarsely-grated potato pancake,” Yuna says right after a Friday afternoon lunch, “and we have eight choices of stuffing. The popular dishes are the Mignon Champignon, which is filet mignon with mushrooms, and our Chicken and Brazilian Cream Cheese Batata, which is also very popular.”

and besides the Mignon Champignon include the Smoked Salmon and Broccoli; Shrimp and Cream; Smoked Turkey Breast and Cream; Beef Chili; Bacon and Brazilian Cream Cheese, Spinach and Cream; and Sundried Tomato ($8.95-$14.95).

Homemade croquettes include the Coxinha con Catupiry, a chicken croquette with Brazilian cream cheese; the Kibe, a croquette with wheat, minced beef and spices; and the Risolis de Milho croquette

filled with corn and cream ($3.95-$4.75).

Salads are the Kale Caesar, Spinach Salad with Bacon & Egg; and soups feature the Broccoli & Cream, and Chicken Noodle; ($3.95-$7.75). Sweet treats include Chocolate Chip and Almond Butter Crunch cookies and the Magic Bar, a sensationally dense brownie made with dark chocolate, almond, cashew and coconut ($2.75-$3.95).

Before opening Café Batata, Vini and Yuna sampled more than 20 coffees before choosing the organic Brazilian brand they serve.

It’s fresh-brewed and can be made Espresso; Espresso Doppio; Americano; Café Latte, and Cappuccino. (You can even

get an additional espresso shot for a buck.)

The couple opened Café Batata a year ago January when they took over the old Lamppost bar. (The lamppost is still outside the café’s front door.) Inside, the walls are a warm yellow, and the wood tables are accented with brightly colored chairs. A flatscreen TV keeps the news and sports-of-the-day up-to-theminute.

So far business has been mostly word-of-mouth, Yuna says, and delivery has been great thanks to Grubhub. Weekend Brunch is served all day and its very popular. It features French Toast with Maple Syrup topped with Fresh Berries; the Bacon, Egg & Cheddar Stuffed Batata, the Mini Batata Hash Browns topped with Two Eggs & Bacon and the Omelet, served plain or with extras ($3.95$10.95).

There are daily specials, too, like a choice of Paninis served on warm Ciabatta Bread including the Mozzarella, Tomato, & Basil with Pesto; the Turkey, Provolone, & Fresh Tomato; and the Prosciutto, Provolone, Tomato & Arugula ($6.95$8.95).

Café Batata is available for parties and special occasions. It seats about 35, and for the summer, Vini and Yuna are adding benches outside for folks to sit and enjoy one of the fruit smoothies they are planning to add to the menu.

Although it’s a tough work schedule – Café Batata is open seven days a week – Yuna says the couple enjoys being a part of the downtown neighborhood, and achieving a goal they’ve always wanted to achieve.
